"Yeh function abhi tak khatam nahi hua kya?" [When will this function end?] Arnav complained glaring at the other men in the room as if it was somehow their fault that only women were allowed in the godbharai rasam.

"Bahut mosambi hai. Payal Bhabhi ki mehendi mein bhi nahi jaane diya," [It's very sweet lime. They didn't let us go to Payal Bhabhi's henna ceremony, either.] NK spoke up in support.

"Mosambi naahi, NK bitwa, naainsaafi." [Not sweet lime, NK, unfair.] Mama to the rescue.

"Mujhe koi jaldi nahi hai. Main Payal ka chehra hi nahi dekhna chahta." [I'm in no rush. I don't even want to see Payal's face.] Akash muttered.

"Kyun? Kyun nahi dekhna?" [Why? Why don't you want to see her?] Mama reprimanded him. "Hum samajhte hai ki Payal bitiya ko tumse yeh baat chupani nahi chahiye thi. Magar tum uski taraf se bhi baat dekho." [I understand that Payal should not have hidden the truth from you but you should consider her side in this as well.]

"Humne ek dusare se vaada kiya tha ki hum koi baat nahi chupayenge. Phir voh aise kaise kar sakti hai?" [We had promised each other that we won't hide anything. So how can she do this?]

"Baat kuch bhi ho. Har rishte mein communication bahut zaroori hota hai. Agar tum uski baat nahi sunoge toh tumhe kaise pata chalega ki usne jo kiya, kyun kiya? Tumhe use apna nazariya samjhane ka mauka dena hoga."

[Whatever it may be. Communication is key in every relationship. If you don't listen to what she has to say, how will you know why she did these things? You have to give her a chance to share her perspective.]

Akash looked skeptical but decided to give it a chance.

Meanwhile, the women of the house escorted their guests to the door. When everyone had left, Khushi told Anjali that she would help her to her room.

"Tum toh rehne hi do, phati sari! Tum Gupta sisters iss ghar ko destroy toh kar di ho. Ab ye achhi daughter-in-law ke drama se kya—" [Don't bother Khushi! You Gupta sisters have destroyed our family. Now don't pretend to be a good daughter-in-law—] Mami sneered.

"Manorama! Yeh kaisi baatein kar rahi hai aap? Khushi aur Payal bitiya chup rahi iss ghar ki shanti ke liye, Anjali bitiya ki khushiyon ke liye. Aap inko dosh dena band kijiye." [Manorama! [Mami, Nani is right. Don't punish Payal and Khushi for the actions of that monster. He also played with their lives. Promise me that you will not hold them responsible for this ever again.]

"Hamare liye tumhari khushiyon se badhkar khucho naahi." [To me, nothing is greater than your happiness.] Mami said, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Anjali smiled. She offered her arm to Khushi.

Having completed her tasks for the day, Payal went to her room. Akash stood up to leave as soon as she entered. She cut him off before he got to the door.

"Akash, hamari baat suniye. Hum jaante hai ki hame aapse Shyam ka sach nahi chhupana chahiye tha. Par hamara yakeen kijiye, hume jab pata chala toh hum sabse pehle aapko hi batana chahte the. Khushi aur Amma ko laga ki yeh baat agar bahar na aaye toh isi mein dono parivaron ki bhalai hai. Hum sab ne Shyam ko bahot baar chetavani di ki woh Di ko sacche mann se apna le. Par hume unhe sudharne ka mauka nahi dena chahiye tha. Hum maante hai ki hamse bahot badi galti hui hai aur uske liye hum aapse dil se maafi mangte hai. Aur vaada karte hai ke aaj ke baad hum aapse bhul kar bhi kuch nahi chupayenege."

[Akash, listen to me. I know I shouldn't have hidden Shyam's truth from you. But believe me, when I found out, I wanted to tell you first. Khushi and Amma thought that it would be best for both families if this remained a secret. We warned Shyam many times to accept Di. But we should never have given him a second chance. I admit that I made a very big mistake and I apologize to you from the bottom of my heart. And I promise I won't hide anything from you ever again.]

Akash hugged Payal. "Main samajhta hun tumne yeh sab kyun kiya. Ab sab kuch bhul kar ek nayi shuruvat karte hai."

Later that night, when Arnav came into his room he found Khushi packing her bags.

"Ye tum kya kar rahi ho?" [What are you doing?] Arnav asked, unable to believe what he was seeing.

"Kya kar rahe hai? Apne ghar jaa rahe hai." [What am I doing? I am going home.] Khushi replied, as if it was the most obvious answer in the world.

"Par kyun?" [But why?] he said, pulling the kurta she was trying to pack out of her hands.

"Ab yahan rehne ki koi vajah bhi toh nahi hai. Shyamji ab Di ki zindagi ka hissa nahi hai, toh unki shaadi ko humse koi khatra nahi hai. Ab yeh shaadi ka natak khatm karte hai." [Now there is no reason for me to stay here. Shyam is out of Di's life so I am not a threat to her marriage anymore. Now we don't have to pretend to be married.] Khushi said, matter-of-fact.

"You are right. Natak nahi karte, iss shaadi ko sach mein nibhate hai." [You are right. Let's not pretend, let's make it real.] Arnav placed his hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes.

"Yeh hum nahi kar sakte." [I can't do this.] Khushi turned away.

"But why?" He almost shouted.

"Agar aap humse yeh sawaal kar sakte hai to aap abhi tak kuch nahi samjhe." [The fact that you can ask me this question means that you don't understand anything.] She turned to look at him then.

"I'm really sorry for everything, Khushi," Arnav said, thinking that was what she needed to hear.

"Aapke maafi mangne se hamare saath jo kuch hua aur hamne jo sehen kiya, woh mit nahi jayega. Hum samajhte hai aapne humse zabardasti shaadi kyun ki par uska yeh matlab nahi iss dard ke hum layak the. Aapne hamari zindagi barbaad kar di. Hum sirf badi shaadi ke sapne nahi dekhte the. Uss se zyada hume ek accha pati aur uske saath sukhi jeevan ki aasha thi. Aur aapke ghamand aur gusse ne sab tabah kar diya. Hamari shaadi se pehle hume laga tha aap badal rahe hai. Hume ASR ke naqaab ke piche chhupe Arnavji dikhne lag gaye the. Unn se ham khushi khushi shaadi kar lete. Par aapke saath nahi kyunki aapne hume dard ke alawa kuch nahi diya."

[Your apology is not going to change what I have been through. I understand why you forced me to marry you but that doesn't mean that I deserved what happened to me. You ruined my life. I didn't just dream of having a big wedding. I hoped for a good husband and a happy married life. All of those have been ruined by your pride and blind rage. Before we got married, I thought you were changing, that I was seeing the Arnav behind the ASR mask. I would have happily married that man. But I can't live with this one who has only given me pain.]

The anger in her words was clear, but her voice was steady and firm. This was not a loss of control but an expression of her truth that she had had to suppress for many months. When she spoke again, her voice was softer.

"Arnavji, aapko ek baar bhi khayal nahi aaya ki hame safaai dene ka mauka milna chahiye? Ek baar bhi nahi laga ki chhat par jo bhi hua us baare mein humse baat karni chahiye?"

[Arnavji, it didn't occur to you even once that I should be given the chance to explain myself? Not once did you feel like you should talk to me about what happened on the terrace?]

Arnav was devastated. He felt frozen in place. He had wronged and mistreated her. But the idea of losing her forever was unbearable.

"Khushi, maine tumhaare saath jo bhi kiya main use defend nahi karunga or naa hi use justify karne ki koshish karunga. Kyunki tumne meri wajah se jo suffer kiya, woh kisi justification ke layak hi nahi hai. Main yeh bhi samajh gaya hoon ki sorry kehne se tumhara dard kam nahi hoga. Par main tumhe kho nahi sakta. Mujhe ek mauka de do ye saabit karne ke liye ki main tumhare layak ban sakta hoon, tumhe khush rakh sakta hoon."

[Khushi, I'm not going to defend any of my actions or try to justify them. Because nothing can justify or undo what I did to you. I have also understood that saying "sorry" will not relieve your pain. But I can't lose you. Give me one chance to prove that I can be the man that you deserve, that I can keep you happy.]

He took a step towards her. She looked away.

"Hame mat rokiye. Hum yeh nahin kar sakte." [Don't stop me. I can't do this.] she said. He realised that she was determined to leave. He had to think of something else to stop her.

"Tum apna contract tod kar nahi jaa sakti." [You can't break the contract and leave.] He hated himself for bringing it up. He almost took it back when he saw the hurt and shock in her eyes. But if this was the only thing that stopped her from leaving, then so be it.

"Kya karenge aap? Police ke hawale karenge hume?"

[What will you do? Hand me over to the police?]

"Tum jaane ki zid karogi, toh wahi karunga."

[If you insist on leaving, then I will.]

"Ek baat aap samajh lijiye, jab yeh contract khatam ho jayega, tab hum aapki zindagi se hamesha hamesha ke liye chale jayenge."

[Understand this, when this contract is over, I will leave you forever.]

(Here is an anthology of mellifluous quotations drenched in devotion, in which many characters of the epic Mahabharatha figure as authors. Most of these prayers are not there in the Mahabharatha epic. The existence of such an anthology is mentioned in the Bruhath Stotra Sagara. . Two versions of the Pandava Gita were available to me. One of them is from

Shri Chitrapur Math, Shirali (Karnataka ) (http://mahabharata-resources.org/)

and the other is a publication by Swarnapuri publication from Tamil Nadu, in which it is told that the text has been collected from Andhra Pradesh. While the Chithrapur collection has 82 slokas including Phala Sruthi, the swarnapuri collection has 91 slokas.

While Six slokas of Chithrapur collection does not find their place in the Swarnapuri collection, 15 slokas of the Swarnapuri collection do not find their place in the Karnataka collection. The translations and transliterations in simple roman script are mine own and I acknowledge my gratefulness to the Chithrapur collection and the Swarnapuri collection.)

Who as a boar went inside the waters.

And lifted the earth along with all the crores,

Of living and non living beings from there.

Achinthyam avyaktham anantham avyayaym,

Vibhum prabhum bhavitha Viswa Bhavanam,

Trilokya visthara , vichara karakam,

Harim prapannosmi gathim mahathmanam. 7

Let me surrender myself to the Lord Hari,

Who is the ultimate aim of great people,

Who is beyond thought and clarity ,

Who is endless and imperishable,

Who is the Lord who is the greatest,

And takes care of the upkeep of the three worlds.

Nakula Uvacha:-

Yadhi gamanamadasthath Kala pasanu badho,

Yadhi cha kula viheene jayathe pakshi keete

Krumi satham aapi gathwa jayathe cha aantharathma,

Mama bhavathu hrudhisthe Kesave Bhakthi Rekha. 8

Tied by the rope of the God of death,

Even if I am born in a base clan,

Or born as a bird or worm or insect,

I would be glad , if my inner soul,

Has a mind in which Lord Kesava is kept.

Sahadeva Uvacha:-

Thasya Yajna varahasya vishnor athula thejasa,

Pranamam ye prakurvanthi thesham aapi namo nama. 9

I salute and salute those great people,

Who worship the powerful light of Vishnu,

In the form of the Yagna Varaha,

Sarva karma phala nirdhishtam yam yam yonim vrajamyaham,

Thasyam thasyam Hrishikesa thwayi Bhakthi druda aasthu may. 10

In whichever , whichever womb I am born.

As a result of my directed Karma,

I should be born with stable devotion,

To Lord Hrishikesa in each of those births.

In the night as Krishna and also after waking up,

Would become one with him, in whichever body they are in,

Like the food offering in the sacrificial fire offered with chants.

Raksha pisacha manujeshwapi yathra yathra,

Jathasya may Bhavathu Kesava thath prasadath,

Whether I am born as insect, birds, beasts or fishes,

Whether I am born as demons , ghosts or men,

May the stable devotion to you and you alone be always with me.

Yekopi Krishnasya sa kruth pranamo,

Dasaswamedhavabruthena thulya,

Dasaswamedhi punarethi janma,

Krishna pranami na punarbhavaya. 13

One salute with devotion to Lord Krishna,

Is equal to the carrying out of ten Aswamedhas,

But even if one does ten Aswamedhas ,

He is born again but not if he salutes Krishna.

India's Attack on Democracy

The recently passed citizenship law is the latest move by the government to threaten the country's position as the world's largest secular democracy.

LAST WEEK, THE U.S. House of Representatives voted to uphold and protect the world's longest standing democracy, and earlier this month, an elected body on the other side of the world voted to mortally wound the world's largest democracy. On Dec. 11, following votes in its lower and upper houses of Parliament, India changed its citizenship law to block naturalization for Muslim refugees and undocumented migrants from neighboring states.

We can debate the finer points of what the current Hindu nationalist leadership claims is its intention, but then we'd be indulging in the type of linguistic masquerades familiar to any student of ethnic cleansing. Instead, we can look to the steady project enacted by India's leaders to, by any means at their disposal, redefine the Indian nation and end its 72-year run as the world's largest secular democracy.

The true intent of this amendment is clear: to move one step closer to defining India as a Hindu nation. That is especially evident when the law is considered in the context of other events this year: the annexation and military occupation of Muslim-majority Kashmir; the pilot this summer of the National Register of Citizens, which excluded 1.9 million Indian residents (Hindu and Muslim) from the state of Assam's citizenship list and will soon roll out nationwide; the November Supreme Court Decision to permit a Hindu temple to be built on the site where in 1992 a militant Hindu mob destroyed an ancient mosque, unleashing some of the worst communal violence in modern Indian history; and the countless statements by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah conflating Muslims with "termites" and "infiltrators" and linking that population to Pakistan and terrorism.

Never mind that there are hundreds of different ways of being Hindu in India, and that India also is home to the second-largest Muslim population in the world, themselves belonging to dozens of different ethnic, linguistic, and faith communities within Islam – some of which have been on Indian soil since the Middle Ages. Some Muslims in India wear sari and bindi every day, and some Hindus eat mutton rasam and drink toddy, who are Modi and Shah to say which of these is right and clean and which of these is truly Indian?

Never mind that India, by far the most powerful country in its region, now hosts barely 200,000 resettled refugees at a time when more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees have converged on Bangladesh, when Ahmaddiya, Tamil and Baluchi Muslims from neighboring countries suffer murderous persecution and Uighurs in nearby China are currently facing genocide. All over the world, powerful countries are turning their backs on refugees fleeing war, terror and climate change. Indeed, 84% of the world's refugees are currently in developing countries, where poverty and violence are endemic, and where the effects of climate change are posing the greatest direct threats.

What we in the United States should heed is that India's turn toward Hindu nationalism is deeply relevant to the future of democracy globally and the safety of its people. India is one of the U.S.'s leading allies. In the past, this allegiance has rested on strategic security and economic interests, but today, it also feeds upon (and fuels) mutual enthusiasm for xenophobia and Islamophobia, and a personal affinity between the two heads of state who espouse these values.

Unfortunately, U.S. media producers and consumers tend to make the same mistake as its politicians in conflating Indian and U.S. Islamophobia – it has different roots in both places, and orients itself to different foundational wounds. In the U.S., Islamophobia like xenophobia orients itself to the legacy of slavery and racism. In India, it stems from India's bloody birth after centuries of divisive colonial rule in Partition, and then Bangladesh's subsequent birth in one of the most violent civil wars in human history.

There have been protests across India but most of the killings and violence has occurred in places governed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party such as Uttar Pradesh.

India today seems poised to descend into another kind of civil war, with the central government responding with brutal repression to the widespread protests, demonstrations, and also xenophobic ethno-nationalist rioting that have engulfed the country since the citizenship amendment became law.

In response to protests, the Indian government turned to the tried and tested tools of martial law and internet shutdowns, akin to what Kashmir has endured for more than four months. India shut down the internet in some parts of the country 104 times in 2019, according to the Internet Shutdown Tracker, a portal tracking incidents in the country. Even more concerning are reports from the state of Uttar Pradesh that Hindu nationalist paramilitaries are being emboldened if not outright engaged by local authorities to attack Muslim residents.

India's rapidly devolving safety and stability will directly impact many facets of U.S. society and its economy. The U.S. is already home to more than 2.4 million immigrants from India, itself the world's leading source of migrants. The Washington Post reported that the U.S. employment green card backlog exceeds 800,000 people, most of them Indian. Irregular migrants are also fleeing India in record numbers.

Just this year, in an unprecedented mass deportation, 300 Indian nationals were sent back to Delhi from Mexico, where they were attempting to cross the southern U.S. border. According to an India Today analysis, of UNHCR data, asylum claims by Indian nationals have risen by 996% in the past decade. India is one of the world's leading consumer markets and also generates a significant percentage of profits for U.S. companies in its $150 billion outsourcing industry, some 70% of which accrues to U.S. companies. Destabilizing India directly affects Americans.

This current crisis also poses some significant questions about how humanity should understand and define citizenship in an age of mass migration amid declining democracy and rising xenophobia. Citizenship worldwide has been about excluding far more than including – the poor, the wrong color, the wrong faith. Indeed, India didn't even have a citizenship law for the first seven years of its existence, and to this day, citizenship cannot be considered equal and equally accessible for all Indians, regardless of faith. India is home to the world's largest indentured and enslaved population, the overwhelming majority of whom are Hindu. Being undocumented is not just the purview of migrants in India; many of India's internal migrants and poor live in informal settlements and slums, without any documentary proof of their birth or citizenship, or in cities where they have no municipal residency status and cannot vote or own property.

My father was born into subjugation and when he was 2 years old, his nation became free. But he could not become a citizen of that nation until he was 8, when India passed its first citizenship law, the Citizenship Act of 1955. My great-grandmother was a freedom fighter. My great-grandfather, who was knighted by his colonizers and served on free India's nascent Supreme Court, corresponded with its first prime minister to define the franchise. He came down on the wrong side of history, as it turns out, arguing that only the literate should be allowed to vote. This is personal for me. But it is, in fact, personal for all of us who believe in democracy.

Afghan artist Rasam paints an image of the shameful act that continues to plague Afghanistan’s society.

Dancing boys are a common tradition throughout Afghanistan. Young, often orphan, boys are dressed in women's clothing and taken to private events where all male audience sit and watch them dance — throwing money at the dancer and the pimp prostituting them for a high price. These boys have not reached puberty and know what they are getting into.

These minors are in desperate need for money and often don't know what else to do — not having family or anything else that would shame them. The men on the other side are often sexually oppressed. Sexual for pleasure is often not practiced with their wives if they are married.

Moreover, single men don't have much of choice to explore their sexuality. People understand that by exploiting a boy it is easier because if a woman loses her chastity her life is destroyed, whereas a boy can somehow move on, get married, and have a family later in life.

This is an abstract painting with the people's faces blurred. The men in the piece may feel guilt and don't want to be known. Yet the composition presents a sense of being there, looking up at the figure dancing. I painted this subject matter to show a vile corner in Afghan society.

As a shy kid in a new environment, it was easier for him to communicate with others through art than with words. She recalls Aghori baba’s words and takes the baby in her hand. She apologizes to Vish who is unconscious. Vikrant asks Mahir not to fall in Sumitra’s trap and tells that Vish will be fine once she delivers Andhka. Sumitra says Vish will kill Bela and your baby. She asks him to tell where are they? Mahir says she didn’t tell me or Vikrant. Sumitra asks him to think. Vikrant blows on her and Sumitra falls down. Mahir and Vikrant run away. Vish is unconscious and gets dream how Hukum kept baby inside her with magic. She wakes up and thinks she was in baby’s Andhka influence. She thinks Bela should have waited for her, before going with Andhka. She gets up and goes. Mahir tells Vikrant that he lied to Sumitra that he didn’t know about the whereabouts. Vikrant says it is good that you had not told anything to Sumitra. Sumitra is hearing them. Mahir says bela told him something to find her. Bela is walking when the vultures attack her. she thinks of Aghori baba’s words and starts running. Mahir shows the magical rope and tells that it will tell bela’s whereabouts. Sumitra hears them. Sumitra thinks it will take us to right place. Vikrant and Mahir follow the magical rope which is taking them to Bela. Sumitra also follows them. The rope gets tied to the tree and makes Sumitra tied too. Mahir and Vikrant come there and tell that they have learnt to trick from her. Sumitra says Vish will not leave Bela. Vish searches for Bela and asks her to wait, and says don’t move on to front. She thinks how you will face Hukum, he will follow Bela. She prays to Bholenath to protect Bela. Bela jumps in the river holding baby in her hand above the water level. Three giant snakes come out of water and ask Bela to handover Andhka to them, let them touch him. Bela says I will never give you this child. She fights with the snakes with her tails. Andhka is looking at the sky. Bela bites the vultures coming near her. She manages to swim and reaches the other end of the river. She tells Andhka that they have no danger now. She sees big crocodiles and hits them with her tail. She says I won’t let anything happen to baby. She comes up and sees Hukum standing infront of her. Hukum says today I have won and says thank you Naagrani for bringing Andhka in this world. He hits her and leaves. He comes home and calls Sumitra and others. He tells them that Yuvi sacrificed his life to save his Andhka. He says I can’t believe that my Andhka is with me. He asks Alek to invite all big people and asks Rohini to bring cradle for the baby. He tells baby to look at Sumitra, and says she is so far from outside, but black from inside. Rohini asks Hukum when our work will be done. Sumitra reminds him of their deal and says you said that you will help me to become naagrani of all vansh. Hukum asks what did you say. He puts baby in the cradle. Sumitra says you have to help me and take me to Bela so that she give me the throne and naagmani. Hukum asks who had promised you? Alek says Huzur. Hukum asks where is Huzur? Rohini says you had killed her. Sumitra says Huzur said that you agreed with the deal. Hukum says whoever did the promise, fulfills it. Rohini says what will we get then? Hukum says my blessings which I never gave to anyone. He then says, that he is joking and tells that he will make her get Naagmani and asks her to smile. Bela gains consciousness and starts walking. Mahir comes to Bela. Bela hugs him and tells that she couldn’t win from Hukum. Mahir says everything is happening according to the plan. Bela asks where is she? Vikrant says she is here? Andhka is holding some other baby and tells that his Andhka will take just 5 days to take his Vikraal avatar. He says Andhka will behead you. Alek says why will he kill us. Sumitra says we are his family. Hukum says Andhka will not kill me only, and then asks them to go and make arrangements of Jashn. Sumitra tells that haveli will be safe for baby. Baby in the cradle becomes a snake and crawls out. Rohini sees and tells others. Hukum says my Andhka was never here, she was a snake. Bela tells Vikrant that she had said and will come here. A fb is shown, Juhi helps Bela and tells Vikrant not to worry. Juhi becomes baby and comes in Bela’s hand. Andhka eyes spit black smoke. Celebrate MahaShivratri With 5 Interesting and Healthy Recipes

The literal translation of Mahashivratri is “the great night of Shiva”. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva – who is an important figure in the Hindu mythology. This festival is largely celebrated in India and Nepal. This year, Mahashivratri falls on 13 February 2018. It is believed that on this very night, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava or the prehistoric creation, preservation and destruction dance.

Do you know why lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth?

The Puranas have many stories to tell about the origin of Mahashivratri. One of them goes as follows. It is believed that during the samudra manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean, which terrified the Gods as well as the demons for the poison had the capability of destroying the whole world. Shaken and trembling, they approached lord Shiva for help. In order to protect the world from the evil effects of the poison, Shiva drank the poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. Doing this turned his throat blue and that was when lord Shiva was given the name Neelakantha, which means one with the blue throat. Mahashivratri is celebrated in remembrance of this event when lord Shiva saved the world from destruction.

Which offerings are Lord Shiva’s favourite?

Mahashivrati is a festival of Hindus celebrated by Hindus all across India. Followers fast on the night of Mahashivratri and sing hymns and praises for lord Shiva. Temples all across India are decorated with colorful lights and flowers and devotees spend the night praying and singing devotional songs in the name of Lord Shiva. Devotees also offer wood apple leaves, cold water and milk to the Shiva Lingam for they are believed to be the favourites of Lord Shiva. The legends also have it that Lord Shiva brings good luck to devotees who fast on the night of Mahashivratri and offer prayer to him. Ujjain – believed to be the home of lord Shiva is the place where this festival is celebrated with grandeur. Large processions are carried out on the roads and people across the city gather on the roads to catch a glimpse of their lord.

Throughout India, Shiva Linga is worshipped as a symbol of fertility which coincides with the fact that right after Mahashivratri, the barren trees and plants start blooming with colorful flowers, like a miracle. It feels as if the earth has rejuvenated and gained fertility after the harsh winters. Like it happens for all other festivals, the way of celebration of this festival differs from state to state and region to region. In Varanasi, the Kashi Vishvanatha Temple celebrates the Linga considering it as the symbol of the pillar of light, and the manifestation of Shiva as the light of supreme wisdom.

1. Sweet Potato Tikki

Sweet Potato Tikki Recipe

Ingredients

Sweet potatoes, boiled, peeled and mashed coarsely: 3

Singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour): Half a cup

Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped: A Fistful

Green chillies, finely chopped: 5

Black pepper powder: ¼ teaspoon

Kala namak (black salt): ¼ teaspoon

Oil to shallow fry

Salt to taste

Method

Mix all ingredients (except oil) until smooth.

Knead into a nice soft dough.

Shape into round thick flat patties (grease hands if the patties start to stick to the hands).

Grease the pan with a little oil and heat it.

Place the patties on the heated pan and shallow fry till golden in colour.

Fry on both sides till golden in colour.

Serve hot with chutney.

2. Green Gram Fry

Ingredients

Green gram: 1 cup

Water: 3 cups

1 chopped Onion

5-6 tablespoons of Oil

1 tablespoon mustard seeds

Red chilly powder: according to the requirement

Salt: according to taste

Method

Boil green gram till it is properly cooked.

After boiling, keep it aside.

Take a pan, heat it and add oil to it.

Once the oil heats up, add mustard seeds followed by onion and red chilly.

When it is properly fried, add the cooked gram.

Add salt and squeeze lime for more tang and taste.

3. Pachi Pulusu (Raw Rasam)

Ingredients

Tamarind: 50 gms

Onions: 2 small

Sesame seeds 25 gms

Green chillies: 25 gms

Coriander: Small bunch

Salt: according to taste

Method

Soak tamarind in water for about an hour.

Dry roast sesame seeds in a frying pan until light brown.

Grind roasted sesame seeds into powder in a mixer. You may add a little water if you cannot grind dry sesame seeds properly.

Chop finely onions and chillies finely and mix thoroughly in a bowl with sesame powder and set it aside.

Extract juice from soaked tamarind and discard the tamarind pulp.

Mix extracted tamarind juice with the onion-chilli-sesame powder mixture.

Add chopped coriander to this.

Add salt according to taste and this is ready to be served with rice.

4. Saboodana (Sago) Khichdi

Saboodana Khichdi

Ingredients

Sabudana (Sago) granules: 2 cups

Roasted groundnut: Half a cup

Grated potatoes: 2

Chopped tomatoes: 2

Green chillies: 6

Oil: ¼ cup

Finely chopped coriander leaves

Turmeric powder

Salt to taste

Curd for serving

Method

Wash and drain sago/saboodana. Keep aside for one hour.

Grind roasted ground nuts, chillies with some salt. Do not add water and keep the powder aside.

Heat oil in a pan.

Mix groundnut and chilli powder with drained out sago.

Add this mixture to the heated pan.

Cook it at low fire for half an hour. Keep stirring.

Add chopped tomatoes and grated potatoes.

Add coriander leaves and serve hot with curd.

5. Lauki (Bottle Gourd) ka Halwa

Ingredients

Fatty milk: half Litre

Peeled Lauki (Bottle Gourd): Half

Sugar: ¾ cup

Khoya: 100 gm

Elaichi powder: 1 teaspoon

Assorted dry fruits (almonds,raisins, cashews): Half cup

Method

Peel and grate the lauki (Bottle Gourd).

Boil lauki in a pan in a very small quantity of water(1/2 cup).

Once the lauki is boiled, drain the whole water and let the soft lauki remain in the pan.

Put milk in a large pan and boil for about 20 minutes on medium flame.

Keep stirring the milk.

Once the milk starts boiling, add the boiled and grated lauki to it.

Keep mixing and stirring until it all becomes a semi solid state.

Now add the grated khoya to the mixture.

Add sugar and mix till it dissolves.

Add dry fruits & elaichi powder.

With this, the halwa is ready to serve.
