365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #15: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2009) - dir. Werner Herzog
My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done is both fascinating and frustrating, which makes sense since that’s precisely how a lot of people feel about Werner Herzog’s post-Kinski dramas. Herzog found a similarly intense performer in Michael Shannon, who delivers a star turn here that can only be described as one-of-a-kind. The film surrounding him doesn’t necessarily meet his standard, but MSMSWHYD is worth experiencing for both its transcendent and disappointing qualities.
At the outset, we meet Detectives Havenhurst (Willem Dafoe) and Vargas (Michael Peña) as they pull up to a house in San Diego where a murder has taken place earlier that morning. A brilliant but evidently disturbed actor, Brad Macallam (Shannon), has killed his mother (Grace Zabriskie) with an antique sword at the nearby home of some neighbors (Irma P. Hall, Loretta Devine). After Brad barricades himself inside his house - across the street from where his mother lived - and announces that he has taken hostages, Havenhurst must piece together the story of what led Brad to this tragic event.
The police investigation is aided by Brad’s fiancée, Ingrid Gudmundson (Chloë Sevigny), who worked with Brad in the same theater company, and by stage director Lee Meyers (Udo Kier), who had recently worked with Brad and Ingrid on a production of Euripides’ play Orestes (FYI: an Ancient Greek tale of a man who murders his mother). The subject matter of the play is only one of many influences on Brad’s state of mind, including the death of his father when he was two years old, an ability to quote lengthy Biblical passages from memory, believing that God is represented by the image of the Quaker Oats logo and maintaining fixations on flamingos and ostriches, all of which are fueled by the mental illness that is never formally diagnosed yet is clearly present within Brad.
You know that a film is really out there when Willem Dafoe and Udo Kier play two of its most recognizably normal characters. In that regard, Dafoe is wasted; he often brings a unique passion to his roles, but seeing him play a decent, standup member of law enforcement is just plain strange. (And of course it brings to mind one of Dafoe’s most dynamic acting showcases, unhinged FBI agent Paul Smecker in The Boondock Saints.) Kier, meanwhile, plays the straight man to Shannon’s mania, giving a nicely understated performance as a man who tries to understands Brad’s struggle between creating art and giving into the most dangerous and destructive impulses of his psychosis. It’s a bit of a shame, though, that Kier - no stranger to bizarre and frenzied characters - wasn’t given just a little more to sink his teeth into here.
Grace Zabriskie, who has limited screen time as the late Mrs. Macallam, imbues her character with the exact right amount of unsettling kookiness. It’s easy to see why Brad would have felt stifled by her, an insidious form of control masked by pleasant smiles and home-cooked meals. (More than once I thought of their bond, and Brad’s act of violence against his mother, as similar to the narrative of Norman Bates and his mother in Psycho.) I also enjoyed Brad Dourif’s scenes as Brad’s uncle Ted, an ostrich farmer and all-around revolting individual who never met a nasty epithet he didn’t believe wholeheartedly.
What often hurts MSMSWHYD is its uneven tone. The film covers highly dramatic territory, yet it often comes across as a sick, twisted comedy. I love the latter type of film, but the problem is that there were times when I wasn’t sure if the content was actually supposed to be read as comedy; sometimes the effect seemed accidental. I would say that the heightened reality seen in the storytelling was inspired by producer David Lynch, but according to what I have heard about the making of the film, Lynch’s contribution was solely financial and he didn’t hang out on the set either. Herzog’s film also happens to be based on a true story (stage actor Mark Yavorsky committed his crime in 1979), but his film seems to be set in the present day, which it makes it harder to overlook the characters’ ignorance of Brad’s obvious issues with mental illness. Why didn’t his family and friends get him help? The question is probably as true for the real Mark Yavorsky as it is for Brad Macallam. Herzog does end his film with striking beauty, however, in the sadness of Brad’s final line to Detective Havenhurst and the subsequent final scene taking place in a location that will resonate with viewers, if not necessarily with Brad himself.

Havenhurst (2016)
Summary   A troubled young woman takes up residence in a gothic apartment building where she must confront a terrifying evil. Genre : Horror Country : USA Cast :  Julie Benz : Jackie
Fionnula Flanagan :  Eleanor Belle Shouse : Sarah Director : Andrew C. Erin
My opinion  “Our rules are simple. You stay sober, you lead a good life, and you don't fall back into your old habits. Then, you are welcome to stay here until the day you die.  And if I don't lead a good life? Then your stay at Havenhurst would be terminated.” Are you a recovering addict and you're offered to stay at "Havenhurst" as aftercare, you'd better make sure you do not slide back into your bad habit. The result is an eviction from this gigantic baroque looking building in downtown New York. A normal eviction would involve you packing your bags and closing the door behind you in an agitated mood. If your stay is terminated at "Havenhurst", the eviction is quite painful and final. But you can be sure of one thing. You won't fall of the wagon ever again.
The person who moves to "Havenhurst" is Jackie (Julie Benz), a recovering alcoholic who's responsible for the death of her lovable daughter because of her addiction. After she gets fired from rehab, she'll get a further follow-up in this luxurious looking hotel. Apparently, a whole bunch of ex-addicts are staying there. As said before, there's only golden rule in this building. The residents shouldn't start again with their bad habits. This is explained by Eleanor (Fionnula Flanagan), landlady of this shelter. A distinguished-looking elderly woman who clearly shows her sympathy towards the inhabitants and who obviously cares about their welfare. In retrospect, she appears to be mother of two less peaceful sons. Even a link is made with the notorious Herman Mudget (better known as H. H. Holmes, one of the first documented serial killers from the 1800s).
In itself the film wasn't so bad but it wasn't really impressive either. It's a mixture of a few superficial ideas and concepts already used in other movies. The house is a maze of secret corridors and entrances in the walls, just like in "House Bound". The final destination of the victims and the denouement is again similar to "The Hoarder". The basement reminds you of "The Texas chainsaw massacre". And of course again you'll witness a little bit of detective work when Jackie realizes that some guests disappear without a trace. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of elements which aren't explained. There's the disappearance of Jackie's girlfriend Danielle (Danielle Harris). A brief event and a reason for Jackie to initiate an investigation "Havenhurst". And her relationship with the helpful agent isn't explained either in detail.
The biggest disappointment for me was the horror content of the film. You can't really call it horror because it isn't actually frightening. Gory scenes can be counted on one hand. There is only one explicit scene and it's also kind of implausible at the same time. And to be honest the physical strength of the killer who moves throughout the building via cleverly designed mechanisms, is a bit exaggerated. His new victims are hurled through the room as if they weigh nothing. At one point I thought it was a paranormal phenomenon with a superhuman strength.
And how is it that other people haven't heard that something was wrong? The walls are apparently paper thin so you can easily hear every suspicious noise or moaning. But apparently only Jackie can hear it. "Havenhurst" is no more than a thriller containing a gloomy mystery. A sort of horror for beginners. Unfortunately, there is not such a refuge in reality. Otherwise, more people would admit they have a problem so they are sure of a place in such a majestic building. Without a serial killer of course.

classickas19 replied to your post: “ok this is gonna sound crazy, but 1) this is the same chem lab fm the...”:
This is the episode that caused the whole season being aired out of order. The network hated it and was scared to air it because they thought it was too silly for their serious detective show. They kept putting it off until they had to air it. The fact that Stephanie wrote it and Gleason actually liked it were the only reasons it made it into production to begin with. Someday you should get ahold of the DVD's. The audio commentaries, especially on this episode, are great.
@classickas19
I read this last night and I was like ‘whahhhhhht’ and then i fell asleep. neither finishing s3 nor responding to this very informative message.
*gets my own detective fedora out*
so ‘Steele in the Chips’ got everything out of order? then where was it supposed to go??? like where does it fit?
also, that is not the weirdest episode they’ve ever done??? you know what episode doesn’t make sense? like at all? the s2 circus episode. they only did that bc they found out brosnan used to be a fire eater. thats it. like the whole thing was about the guttenberg bible??? like how fuckin random??? it’s not THAT serious of a detective show. even Dreams of Steele is weirder than this cookie case.
It makes SO much sense that Stephanie wrote it tho. The conversation Laura has with Clay about how much money they used to make at Havenhurst (Laura getting paid less for the same work, effectively dragging society for a problem we still have), the dieting craze with the zero calorie cookie (SMART), and then brief convo Laura has with Sandy about ‘how do u run in those heels?’. There wasn’t any animosity b\w laura and sandy, only b\w laura and steele (as there should have been).
Its a solid episode, i just hate the placement.
