When Vijay told students to read about Ambedkar & educate their parents on cash-for-votes
The actor was speaking at a recent event organised by his fans association to felicitate top-scorers of board examinations.
Tumblr media
Tamil superstar ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay recently honoured Class 10 and Class 12 toppers at a grand event organised by the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, which handles several philanthropic activities.
The actor who is celebrating his 49th birthday on Thursday called the young students present at the June 17 event as the “voters of tomorrow.”
The actor also encouraged them to “read about everything, till the extent possible; read about leaders like Ambedkar, Periyar, Kamaraj. Take what’s good and leave the rest.”
Vijay also touched upon the common practice of giving cash for votes in his speech at the event. “Consider a politician who gives Rs 1,000 to a voter in a constituency that has 1.5 lakh voters. How much he must have given as bribe — nearly 15 crore? If a person gives a bribe of Rs 15 crore, think how much he must have earned before that. I want all this to be a part of your educational system,” the actor said to applause from the students and parents gathered.
“You (the students) are the future voters. You are the ones who will select the next good leaders. We are poking our own eyes with our hands, by getting money for votes. There will be a change if you go and tell your parents that they should not get money to vote,” Vijay said.
Vijay also spoke about the impact a powerful dialogue by Dhanush’s character in the 2019 film ‘Asuran’ had on him — — “if you have land, they will take it away, if you have money, they will take it away, but education alone, they can never take it away from us, Chidambaram”. “I wanted to do something for education, which is an integral part of life. This has been going on in my mind for so long, and now is the right time to do so,” Vijay said at the event where he gave certificates and rewards to the high-achievers.
He also mentioned that education is beyond what is taught in classrooms.
The actor ended his speech with the phrase “Valarpom kalvi, Valarga en kutty nanba nanbis” (“let us nurture education, and may all my little friends grow”).
Political analysts have told media that the June 17 event could be a great start for Vijay’s entry into politics. All eyes are on how he is going to capitalise on his stardom.

via Today Bharat TNM spoke to a few fan club members across industries on the welfare activities they do in the name of their favourite star. Nowhere else in the world would you be able to witness a group of people building a temple to worship an actor. Nowhere else in the world would you be able to see youngsters pitching in lakhs worth of money to erect a gigantic cutout of their favourite star just to celebrate the release of his new film. And nowhere else would you hear the news of fans donating several lakhs worth of life-saving medical equipment in the name of their star. Nowhere else but in India. The star’s image and the existence of these fan clubs are reciprocal. If the star’s power is pitched on these clubs, the fan clubs in turn depend on their star’s image to come up with these extravagant displays. When it comes to the southern states, fan clubs are eventually channelled to propel the star into politics. MGR did it, Vijayakanth, Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan and Kamal Haasan are doing it and others to come too will follow suit. And what do these fan clubs do? In addition to erecting banners and earning a disrepute for engaging in toxic and abusive online wars, fan clubs also organise welfare programs — from blood donation drives to cleaning up lakes. TNM spoke to a few fan club members across industries to understand some of the welfare activities they do in the name of their star. Goodwill gestures of fan clubs On September 2 this year, to mark actor and politician “Power star” Pawan Kalyan’s 49th birthday, his fans donated over 600 oxygen cylinders, worth estimated to be Rs 70 lakh, to government hospitals in Andhra Pradesh and in Hyderabad city. The President of the Jana Sena Party responded by saying that he was overwhelmed by the gesture of the “Jana Sainiks” across the world. Similarly, during Chiranjeevi’s 65th birthday this August, fans took to planting trees and donating blood. Only in May this year, Thiruvananthapuram District Mohanlal Fans Association pledged to donate their organs to the state run 'Mrithasanjivini' programme, a gesture that gained a nod from State Health Minister KK Shailaja. In March 2019, Vijay fans in Kerala called Kollam Nanbans, were of great help during the devastating floods that year. A wide network of fans across the state mobilised to help in relief camps while it was reported that the actor himself had routed donations through the fans’ accounts. The same year across all districts in Tamil Nadu, Thalapathy Vijay Vilaiyilla Virundhagams (Thalapathy Vijay free banquet) were launched. Here, about 100 residents are fed free breakfast daily, even during pandemic. This is among the other activities that the “Thalapathy” fan club members do. “We also distribute tailoring machines to women, organise health camps, hold free banquets, renovate schools and other such welfare programs,” a Vijay Makkal Iyakkam member tells TNM. Fan clubs turned welfare associations Fan clubs have been around since the time of idol worship began in Indian cinema. But fan clubs have been turned into welfare associations when the star expresses political ambitions. Around 2009, the actor Vijay’s fan clubs were brought together as a “narpani iyakkam” (welfare association) later turning into Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, a registered welfare association with branches across the state. Speaking to TNM, a member from Vijay Makkal Iyakkam shares, “It is like a mini party. We have a youth wing, students wing, etc. We have district heads and a main head. The head office in Panayur where we have annual meets.” While the word is that his fan clubs have been working silently, over the past few years, these activities have gained some attention, especially since Vijay himself has been making politically loaded statements, both in his films and during his annual public appearances. Most often, especially when it comes to Tamil Nadu and Telugu speaking states, these fan clubs have proven to be a launchpad for the star’s eventual plunge into politics. Case in point is Rajinikanth’s Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM). When the actor announced that he would be entering politics in 2017, his fan clubs were converted into party outfits. The sheer number of members attached to RMM and their present structure as a political outfit have helped in distributing relief and indulging in other charity work. Another interesting observation is with actor Kamal Haasan’s fan clubs that were converted into Narpani Iyakkam well before he expressed his intent to join politics. Members from his welfare association have reportedly pointed out their role during the 2004 Tsunami and the 2015 floods. Kamal’s Narpani Iyakkam came in handy to the star when he launched his party Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018. Actor Suriya, on the other hand, features more prominently as an individual when it comes to charity, his fan clubs taking a backseat. The star along with his family members father Sivakumar and brother Karthi, run the Agaram Foundation solely to help children from working-class families and difficult backgrounds gain access to quality education. The star himself makes donations and his fan club activities are mostly routed through his Foundation. However, stars like Ajith, who maintain a very low-key profile and resolutely keep away from making any political statements, have disbanded their fan clubs. According to those in the field, his fans as individuals might indulge in charity. In Malayalam, Mammootty Fans and Welfare Association International (MFWAI) was founded in 1989, soon after the release of the movie Vadakkan Veeragatha. Arun, state president of the MFWAI says, “I have heard that when the idea of a fans association was suggested to Mammukka, he said that he didn’t want an association of fans for the sake of it but one that will help people out. That’s why you find ‘welfare’ in the name.” Who decides on campaigns? The kind of charity work that fans indulge in regularly is mostly decided by their leaders. Vignesh, who is Kancheepuram head of the Vijay Sethupathi Fan Club in Tamil Nadu talks about cleaning a lake in their district. “We have about 1000 members who are active part of the fan club so when we indulge in some welfare activity, we ask them to pitch in whatever they can, Rs 50, Rs 100. Last time we were able to clean a lake in Kancheepuram and people in the village were very happy,” says the 24-year-old. Blood donation drives are common among all fan clubs. For Mammootty’s birthday this year – on September 7 – blood donation camps were organised in more than one place of all 14 districts in Kerala. “All it needs is your time. Numbers of our members are enlisted with most major blood banks. For other charity work, we use funds that we collect among ourselves – there are working members and students. There are district and state-level committees. When it’s an emergency and something big, we coordinate the districts together,” Arun says. Some have gone beyond. A Mahesh Babu fan club member recalls, “We were able to collect Rs 5 lakh for the spinal cord surgery for a 15-year-old in August last year. Mahesh Babu also donated for this and NTR fans have also collaborated for the donation. The girl had multiple surgeries, and this was the last one, where she received help from fans, after they heard about her in social media,” he explains. In the name of the star Money for these events are usually pooled in by the fans. “Vijay sir always tells us to not go beyond what we can afford. He is against us taking loans for organising such programs. He says, “Prioritise your family first and only if you can, indulge in charity.”,” says the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam member. In Tamil Nadu, fan clubs for Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi too are growing. “Fans indulge in charity work based on their star’s face value and based on how they interact with fans. Not every star is close to their fan club,” says the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam member. Vijay Sethupathi’s fan Vignesh puts it better. “He may not be interested in joining politics now but we always do. Any fan would want to see their star as a leader one day. Be it Rajini or Vijay. When fan clubs are seriously involved in welfare measures it means they would like to see their star become a leader one day.” But on a basic level, we ask, why do fans do what they do in the name of their star? “I like him (Vijay Sethupathi). I have seen what the previous generation used to do. I remember what my father used to do as a Rajini fan. I’ve seen my neighbour Annas (older brothers) do it for Vijay. Now I do it for my star. It is more of a habit. But there are people who are not part of any fan clubs but continue to do welfare in the name of the star. We like him and would like to do good in his name,” he offers.

SUPER STAR'S FIRST EVER INTERVIEW!
BY ALAGU, 12 DECEMBER, 2019
INDIA, TAMILNADU, CHENNAI, RAJINIKANTH, CINEMA, TAMIL CINEMA
#HBDThalaivarSuperstarRAJINI - this has been the hashtag trending worldwide as the people from four directions have been sending the birthday wishes to Indian Superstar Rajinikanth through twitter. The Superstar, who decorates the throne of superstardom for the past four decades, celebrates his 70th birthday on Thursday - Dec 12th, 2019. While remembering his success and achievements in cinema, let's rewind his wavelength during the first interview he gave to 'Bommai' magazine in 1977 after wrapping up his debut movie Apoorva Raagangal. Here's his interview to the Bommai magazine,
How did you get an interest in acting?
Through watching movies.
Have you ever attempted to act in the movies? Can you brief those attempts?
I've taken efforts in acting after joining the film institute and I've got a diploma from the acting school managed by the South Indian Film chamber and the diploma was awarded by Dr. P N Reddy.
Was there any bitter experience that you have faced in your efforts?
Some of the students had discouraged me and that was the bitter experience.
(L-R) Kamal Haasan, Balachander and Rajinikanth - File photo

Who supported and motivated you in your efforts?
Mr. K Balachander was the only one who stood by me and motivated me.
Before coming to acting, have you ever imagined or conceptualized the way you thought you should be acting in the roles?
I don't want to follow anyone since I wish to act in a new way. I have been acting in that way and will act in the future.
How did you get introduced to K Balachander?
I was in the Kannada section in the film institute and Mr. Balachander came to the Tamil section. He merged the lessons and taught the acting. I'm a big fan of Balachander and I have never missed his movies and he is my guru. I firstly asked Balachander about his expectations from the actors apart from acting. He told that the actors shouldn't act outside of the movies. This is our introduction and that's how it happened. Balachander asked me whether I can speak Tamil? I told him I'm at the beginning level. He told me to come to the Kalakendra office to meet him.
Can you explain how Balachander examined and selected you?
I went to Kalakendra to meet Balachander. He asked me to act the scene of my own. I've acted a scene from Kannada drama and during that time, I'm not a  Tamil fluent person. Balachander told that I should learn Tamil that will take me to the next level. During that meet, Balachander inducted me in his three movies - Apoorva Raagangal, Aval Oru Thodar Kathai, Moondru Mudichu on the same day.
Were you given the role of Villain initially?
Yes. I was given the Villain role and I got the opportunity after meeting Balachander in the institute and he renamed me as 'Rajinikanth' by replacing my birth name 'R. Shivaji Rao'.
What have you heard about Balachander before acting in his direction?
I heard him as a very angry person and always a moody type.
What do you think about Balachander?
I'll think of him daily after which I'll go to the movie set by putting on the make-up.
Describe your experience of the first-day shooting and your mindset. Have your family and friends spoken about your first movie with you?
I've no fear of the camera. I feared for Balachander and attainting a good name by acting before the great director. Neither friends nor family asked me about the role but rather they asked me whether Balachander felt satisfied through my acting.
Rajinikanth in Apoorva Raagangal - File photo

Has Balachander ever got tensed on your acting?
There was no day that I had spent without having been scolded by Balachander. He got tensed on me with love that I must act with perfection and must attain the glory. One day, 'Moondru Mudichu' had occupied my dreams where Balachander scolded me even in my dreams.
Who else had got used to you and who attracted you in the movie sets?
Sri Vidya, Kamal, Sivakumar, Vijayakumar, Sri Priya were the artists who attracted me in the sets.
What were you doing when the movie 'Apoorva Raagangal' released?
I went to Krishnaveni theater to watch Apoorva Raagangal in the morning and since the tickets were sold out, I bought the ticket through black ticket sellers and watched the movie.
Did your fans in the theater identify you?
Not at first sight since I was growing a beard at that time. A nine-year-old girl identified me and asked I was the one acting in the movie. She introduced her entire family to me and she was my first fan.
What have you thought about the criticism of your acting in the movie?
I've read the critics of the movie. A weekly magazine had underlined my name and suggested to do well and that message was attracted me. I was interested to read the critics that had pointed out my mistakes than the ones which praised me.
Whose acting did you admire before coming to the cinema industry?
Actor Nagesh was the only one who attracted me.
Have you ever thought of moving forward by following a respective person?
I've never thought of following the styles of anyone and I always wished to picture my own style.
(L-R) Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan - File photo

What would you say about the villains of Tamil movies like Nambiyar, Asokan, Srikanth, and Vasu? Had any one of these people ever appreciated you?
Srikanth has appreciated me. We both acted in the movie Iraivan Kodutha Varam during which he wholeheartedly appreciated me.
Being a Villain, would you able to take and act in cameo roles?
Definitely, I'll accept the cameo roles. The fans have to judge whether I can act in cameo roles.
Villain- how would you like to describe this word?
' Having limitless selfishness'- this would be the exact word to describe a villain.
Were there any senior artists who have ever advised you in acting?
Mr. S V Subbaiah, Mr. V K Ramasamy, Mr. Nagesh have given me plenty of advice regarding my acting.

New Post has been published on http://www.visionmp.com/enthusiastic-rajini-fans-celebrated-their-icons-birthday-by-conducting-prayers/
Superstar Rajinikanth turns 67, wishes pour in
Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth turned 67 on Tuesday, with his fans leading the birthday celebrations. The actor was, however, not in town, according to his publicist.
Enthusiastic Rajini fans celebrated their icon’s birthday by conducting prayers, even as many of them thronged the city with a hope of catching a glimpse of the actor, currently busy with “Kala-Karikalan”, touted as a sequel to his 2016 hit
“Kabali”.
Actor Dhanush, also the son-in-law of Rajinikanth, announced the launch of the film’s second look coinciding with the veteran star’s birthday on Tuesday.
The picture shows Rajinikanth wearing dark glasses and a black shirt. The film, being produced by Dhanush, has already set off a buzz among his fans.
Political and cinema world greeted the actor on his birthday. In his twitter message, Actor Amitabh Bachchan termed Rajinkanth a “friend” and a “large-hearted colossus”.
“To my dear friend, colleague and a most humble and large hearted Colossus !! Birthday greetings,” he tweeted. He also uploaded a picture of himself with Rajinikanth.
Actor Akshay Kumar, his co-star in “2.0”, also greeted Rajinikanth on his birthday. “Have always been in awe of your onscreen persona but working with you made me a bigger fan of you offscreen. They don’t call you Superstar just like that. Keep shining the brightest@superstarrajini Sir,” Akshay tweeted.
DMK leader MK Stalin, MDMK founder Vaiko and BJP state unit President Tamilisai Sounderrajan, actors Radhika, Kajal Aggarwal and Vikram Prabhu were among those who wished the superstar.
The political circle in Tamil Nadu is abuzz with speculation of the actor taking the political plunge, especially after his statement earlier this year asking his fans to “prepare for war”. It was seen as his hint of a political entry.
At a fans’ meeting in May this year, he said, “When war comes they (professionals) will come to the rescue of their motherland.. I have a profession, work, duty and so do you. Go to your places, do your duty, take care of your vocation.. Let us face the war when it comes.”
He had also complained that the “system is rotten” in the presence of leaders like Stalin and PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss.
The actor has not made any loaded statements after that but his contemporary Kamal Haasan has gone ballistic against the ruling AIADMK on corruption, hinting he might make a political plunge.
In 1996, Rajinikanth had publicly criticised the then AIADMK government led by the late J Jayalalithaa on the law and order front, and had backed the then DMK-TMC combine, which swept the polls, routing AIADMK.
