I was congratulating myself for finishing the first big diamond block of my big star hexi quilt. I got the mother ship out and laid it on the floor and added the freshly completed diamond. I have forgotten the row of cream. Stay tuned for a completed diamond coming your way some time this weekend...hopefully. In the mean time here is a completed blue part of a diamond block.

here's my fic for day 6 of @mcyt-yuri-week! today's prompt is "cozy"
Okay, so trying to drain an ocean monument alone might not have been the best idea.
Gem was doing so well, too. She’d made so much progress on the project over just a few hours. She’s no stranger to mob fights — she can easily take down a horde of zombies (once she knows they’re behind her) or beat her friends at sparring practice any day. Ocean monsters can’t be that different, right? She should be perfectly capable of building a guardian farm. She should be, but unfortunately, it turns out that she isn’t.
After three rounds of mining fatigue and void knows how many guardian beams, Gem resigned herself to the fact that she was absolutely going to die. Losing all her tools and armor would be awful, but there was no way out of it — she hadn’t packed enough water breathing potions. Everything would’ve gone wrong, but just in the nick of time, Pearl swooped down and lifted her out of the water.
So instead of trudging back from her house to salvage a few surviving items, Gem is in Pearl’s base, curled up on the couch while Pearl fusses over her.
“Now, why would you go and do a thing like that, Gem?” Pearl teases. “That’s not good for you!”
“Well, I didn’t mean to,” Gem tries to say, but it comes out as a jumbled mess of words.
“That’s alright.” Pearl hands her a healing potion. “I’m gonna get you fixed up. Can I touch your armor?”
Most people wouldn’t even ask, Gem thinks. They’d just try to take it off for me. The thought sparks something like electricity in her mind — Pearl isn’t like anyone she’s ever met before. “Mhm.”
“Alright. I’m gonna take it off so we can get you into some dry clothes.” Pearl gently lifts Gem’s helmet off and undoes the latches on the back of her chestplate. Gem slips off her leggings. Pearl kneels down and takes Gem’s right boot off, tugs at the left one, then realizes. “Oh, void, your ankle’s twisted really badly. It’s all swollen. Do you have mending on these?”
“Nope. Unfortunately.” Gem sighs and flops back onto the couch.
“Well, it’s fortunate for you right now,” Pearl chuckles. “I’m sorry, but I think I’m gonna have to break this.”
“Tryin’ to leave me defenseless, huh?” Gem murmurs. “I see your tricks.”
“Oh, shush.” Pearl takes out her pickaxe and gently taps at the diamond boot on Gem’s foot. “Does that hurt?”
Gem winces as a tap comes a bit too close to her ankle. “Little bit.”
“Sorry. It should only be a minute.” Pearl’s attempts somehow become even gentler.
Gem closes her eyes. “Take your time…”
Cracks spread across the length of the boot. With a final tap, it shatters apart. “There. Got it. You alright, Gem?”
“Mhm,” Gem murmurs. “’S fine.”
Aw, she’s sleepy, Pearl thinks before she can stop herself. Gem looks so cozy there on the couch, and Pearl suddenly wants nothing more than to patch her up and keep her safe. “Do you wanna get up, or should I just get splash potions?”
“Mmm.”
“Noted.” Pearl laughs as she wanders off to grab some splash potions out of a chest.
By the time Pearl comes back with the potions, Gem is curled up in a cozy ball on the couch, already asleep. Pearl’s heart swells. She splashes the two potions onto Gem, making certain not to be too forceful or make too much noise, and watches as the cuts and bruises on Gem’s skin slowly fade. Her ankle is still a bit swollen, so Pearl puts a pillow underneath it and adds an ice pack. Gem looks so peaceful and safe that Pearl can’t help but feel her heart melt every time she looks at her friend. Without even thinking about it, she goes to another chest and takes out a blanket. She might as well make sure Gem is cozy while she heals. It’s the logical thing to do. (No other reason.)
Pearl drapes the quilt over Gem’s sleeping form. Its soft blue blocks and cloud patches fit Gem’s style just as well as hers. The thought is strangely heartwarming, and Pearl feels a strange fluttering in her chest that she isn’t used to. Gem is silly and badass and kind and so pretty Pearl can barely stand it stylish, and Pearl doesn’t quite know what to make of her. All she knows is that she’s glad she took a detour past the ocean when she did.
Gem makes a peaceful humming sound. Pearl leans down and kisses her on the forehead. “Sleep well, Gem.”
“G’night, Pearl,” Gem murmurs with a smile.
Pearl jumps back, blushing beet-red. Oh, void, oh, void, she was awake, that’s so embarrassing, that shouldn’t be embarrassing, why am I embarrassed?
Gem giggles. “Thank you for saving me.”
“You’re welcome,” Pearl murmurs back.
Even when Gem is fast asleep and snoring softly, the blush in Pearl’s cheeks doesn’t fade.

A selection of some of the quilts and quilt tops I got done this year!
January: Nevada Windows. The fabrics really make this one work. It looks like cutouts to view the shiny fabric "underneath".
February: Interlocking rings, which is destined to be a wedding gift in 2024 (and I need to get it machine quilted).
March: Neon rain. A way to use up all those lovely brilliant batiks in the stash.
April: Shockwave. This was remade from an older quilt top I'd made when I first started; I ripped it, rearranged it and sewed it back together, no waste, and a much better end result.
May: New Vegas 9 of Diamonds. This one makes me think of Fallout New Vegas (big surprise, right?) between the colors and the textures.
June: Pride Month: Queer Arrow. The blocks in the arrow were all chosen for different queer meanings.
July: Asterisk. Possibly my most popular one on social media, for the optical illusion.
August: Foundation paper pieced hearts. I finally took a class and learned how to do this. This was before everything went to hell in August, but, at least something  got made.
September: Black Diamonds. It was a tossup between this and Facets, which both used the same fabrics; Black Diamonds actually started as a way to use up leftover pieces from Facets. And it turns out, I like Black Diamonds better :)
October: Frogs! A gift art that I couldn't post about until after Christmas! And it's FPP too, so I was able to put that class in August to good use.
November: Maple Leaf quilt. The other extremely popular one, and honestly, it's gorgeous. It might be the one I'm most proud of in 2023.
December: Applique block, Toybox, commission. December was weird and busy and I couldn't do any quilting for weeks because of furniture problems, but I got this and another commission done during December, so, yay!
I should put together the list of things I want to work on in 2024, and take a look at what patterns I haven't done, and the fabrics I have lying around. It's time to stashbust again...

quilt patchwork blocks
Okay, world of quilters / people who like patchwork.
Suggest a quilt pattern to me. Within certain permutations.
My very favorite is the Lemon Star, which is the Lemoyne Star except you cheat by using half square triangles instead of diamonds. But I've done that on a quilt for my sibling AND the wallhanging I'm working on now, so not that one.
I have only the feeblest of applique skills, so not likely to go for major applique. Not interested in wholecloth quilts.
Traditional American patchwork piecing is what floats my quilting interest boat. I haven't done curved work yet. I'm willing to try it as long as it's not TOO complicated. I don't care for the modern stuff where they just sew a bunch of rectangles together. Boring. And anything enthusiastically described as "scrappy!" probably not going to work for me. (I mean. I might use scraps. But not stuff specifically designed to just vomit scraps onto it.) I love designs using half square triangles.
Reblog and suggest a cool patchwork block pattern! Or reblog so that someone else will suggest one.

I really like how this block turned out! I needed a centre block for a quilt I'm working on that was different to the other blocks but used the same fabrics, and since I mostly had scraps left I looked for some scrappy block ideas and adapted this one to suit my quilt. The effect of a hollow square around the diamond is actually a happy accident from how I placed my colours and now I'm tempted to make a whole quilt like this...

Got all the blocks for my Tiny Tiles quilt done. I am pretty sure this is going to be one of my Day 1 Bags donations for young people graduating out of foster care in Texas. Because that quilt needs to be bigger than the Tiny Tiles pattern makes, I added a couple of extra rows and added the outer blocks which only have triangles on two corners instead of all four so that I have no partial diamonds at the edges. That way I can add a border if I want/need to without things looking weird.
A lot of the blues here are out of the scrap bin although fewer than I thought given the size of my blue scrap pile. My scrap tends to be true scrap in a lot of ways. Most stuff was less than the 2"x2" I needed for this pattern.
If you're interested in making a donation quilt, the project was 80 quilts short of their pledge goal as of 9/11/23. Quilts need to be 50"x70" minimum and are due by Feb 28, 2024. You can sign up at the Day 1 Bags link. For folks out of Texas, just pick a random region and then your regional coordinator will get with you about shipping.

Got tired of piecing by hand after like 8 hst blocks lol. So I sat down with my beautiful and heavy sewing machine to finally work out the tension issues.* I've also already deviated from my original plan to just sew a bunch of hst oriented in the same direction together to this diamond and triangle pattern and before someone tells me there is a much less labor intensive way of working it I know! This is where indecision gets a person! Also it's my first quilt so..
*by work out the issues I mean I sat down with her and it was miraculously working perfectly. I am now too scared to put her back in the box out of fear she will start skipping stitches again and have decided to name her Superstition.

I can safely say the first big diamond is made now. The cream edge is on although it is a little hard to see against the cardboard. Hubby got me some old packing cardboard from his work to help keep the units flat and it is working well. I have five more diamonds to make. The hexies are all sewn and ready to be assembled. I have a few days off work this week so hopefully I will get another diamond started.

In 1856, a girl named Adeline Harris started making a unique quilt.
Over the next 20 years, she sent small diamond-shaped pieces of white silk to famous people from around the world and they signed them and sent them back to her.
She put them together into a quilt with a 3D cube pattern called “tumbling blocks.”

Diamond in the Square Quilt, artist unidentified, 1910-20, Pennsylvania
"When the Amish, an Anabaptist sect with Swiss Germanic roots, first immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1720s or 1730s they had no quiltmaking tradition. The quilts that are so admired today were created primarily between the 1880s and well into the twentieth century. In their quilts, Amish women established a profound character that was consistent with their faith, comprising large geometric patterns pieced from fine woolens dyed in beautiful saturated earth and jewel tones. As there was no proscription against quilting stitches, it is here that the women allowed themselves to engage in the naturalistic imagery employed as appliqué by their non-Amish neighbors.
The Diamond in the Square is one of the earliest patterns devised by Amish women in Lancaster County. An adaptation of the center-medallion style that was fashionable in the early nineteenth century, it feels old yet the colors are uncannily modern. The purity of large pieces in solid color fields relates to religious art of the Middle Ages but bears no relation to transitory tastes; in being consciously out of time it becomes timeless. Geometric abstraction becomes a symbolic form, and some scholars have related the pattern to an emblem published in 1626 by Thomas Jenner, a frame-within-a-frame that fit into each other the way man and God are intended. The square format with large corner blocks, wide outside border, and center diamond has also been compared to the tooled leather designs found on covers of the Ausbund, the early Anabaptist hymnal. Although some symbols may be widely understood and used to regulate our daily lives, conversely they guard systems of meaning, and are available to only a privileged few."

I had a terrible time getting a good picture of this. There's a lot more green than the top picture implies. But it's complete and has been received by the recipient! It's a birthday present for @gayfanboyfred.
Total size is approx 5' square. This has a lot of neat little details - the darker sides of the green blocks are all on the "inside", and all the tiny blue arrows point toward the green blocks. The recipient's favorite color is green, so of course the backing and binding were green also.
The quilting pattern chosen was diamonds as this is a pointy design, so, pointy and pointy. Quilting done by the new shop down the road, who also did the binding, which I am 100% willing to pay someone else to do (and they do a way better job than I do).
