Piecework magazine offers both historical articles on needlework and instructions with patterns for some of items featured. I must say I always feel the ones with patterns are the best although I have not yet made any of them.

For the instructions, we have the tatted doilies are drawn from an 1889 called Weldon’s Practical Tatting and Katrina King suggests more modern uses like earrings for the smallest motifs and wedding veil for larger ones. The long cream kilt stockings, from ones worn by men who wore breeches instead of long pants, are adaptations from 18th Century Cape Breton Island examples. Barbara Kelly-Landry offers full instructions and she and Annamarie Hatcher recount the history of such stockings and how men’s calves used to be an object of interest for their shape. Yes, women ogled men’s calves. Maybe that it why it is my favorite pattern in this issue. ;-) The other pattern is for the colorwork sleeves you see here which were a separate part of traditional Macedonian clothing according to Ali Giles-Damjanovska in one of two articles on that tradition. Plus an early American sampler pattern is included.

Then, there are historical articles with information and inspiration but without patterns. So there is one on bobbin lace from Puerto Rico by Diana P. Martinez Rodriguez from which this christening gown image is taken. I thought it was crochet at first glance which may explain the popularity of crochet trim in the late 19th and early 20th century: its ability to mimic lace. There are more articles including one on patchwork quilts from India, on early European couching stitch embroidery, and a dress created by someone in a mental asylum, and no, I am not making that last one up.

"The only way for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." Small Town Monsters by Diana Rodriguez Wallach was such a great read. It's a YA horror book full of supernatural elements, well developed characters, and captivating storytelling. The fast pace led to me binge reading in two days because I was so interested in getting to the root of what was happening. I definitely got the creeps while reading certain parts at night. I like my horror ominous and this one definitely fits the bill. I loved this story because I got to see a Latinx female lead who wasn't the stereotypical "feisty girl" trope. Vera Martinez was interesting and unique. Her parents are demonologists and her grandmother is very Catholic. Vera is an outcast at school because of her parents' line of work. It was fascinating to see how they maintained such a strong family unit despite their different belief systems and ways of dealing with "monsters." I loved the way the themes of monsters and choice are used throughout the story. Monsters in small towns deem people like Vera's family to be others, not only because of religion but also background. Monsters are those who prey on the vulnerabilities of others. Monsters could also be nihilists, who only think of themselves despite dire consequences to others. Monsters could also be literal beings that possess us. Over and over, you see the overarching theme of the dangers of relegating people to "otherness" based on fear and pain. Rodriguez Wallach doesn't shy away from giving you depth. Overall, the suspenseful storytelling kept me going. The Puerto Rican representation made my heart sing, especially Vera's relationship with her grandmother and the food. The author seamlessly weaves in actual events and horror references. The ending is so fast-paced that you don't see it coming. I was rooting for Vera the whole time because she reminded me so much of teenage me in the ways that she questions everything and interprets the world. If you love Wednesday Addams, then please read this one and meet Vera Martinez. I would love if this one got a sequel, but I'm looking forward to Diana's next latinx horror book, Hatchet Girls, out Fall 2023. Demetrius Andrade will top a World title quadruple-header as he defends his WBO World Middleweight against Jason Quigley at the SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire on Friday, November 19, live worldwide on DAZN.

Andrade (30-0 18 KOs) puts his crown on the line for the fifth time and the Rhode Island star will be looking for a statement win as he hunts the unification blockbusters with his fellow belt holders at 160lbs. The 33-year-old, who picked up the vacant strap in his first fight with Eddie Hearn in Boston in October 2018, will make it five straight fights with European challengers when he steps through the ropes against Quigley. Carta Abierta por el injusto despido de María Inés Rodriguez del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Burdeos

En días pasados nos enteramos del despido intempestivo de María Inés Rodriguez. Aquí la carta que ha estado circulando en francés e inglés e donde varios artistas, curadores y profesionales de museos de arte invitan a adherir la carta y protestar por el injusto despido a Maria Inés Rodríguez del CAPC de Burdeos

El 8 de marzo, el día internacional de los derechos de la mujer, nos enteramos por la prensa que Maria Inés Rodríguez será pronto retirada de su puesto como Directora del CAPC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Burdeos. En Francia, el número de mujeres directoras, presidentes y cabezas de instituciones culturales es tan pequeño, que este anuncio marca una regresión más en la paridad del fuertemente masculino mundo del arte francés.

Estamos estupefactos ante este retiro anunciado de una excelente profesional que es reconocida interacionalmente por su curiosidad, la pertinencia de su programa curatorial, y la calidad de sus exposiciones. Maria Inés Rodríguez ha relanzado la dinámica del CAPC, con retrospectivas dedicadas de Beatriz Gonzalez, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Judy Chicago y Franz Erhard Walther, ganador del León de Oro en la 57 Bienal de Venecia, 2017. Ha brindado un lugar preponderante a la colección, que es excepcional, y la ha hecho permanentemente visible al público. Desde que fue contratada en 2013, ha promocionado el programa de ‘Amigos del CAPC’ y ha tenido éxito desarrollando colaboraciones y patrocinios, un rasgo fundamental en el rol de los directores de museo ahora que la financiación pública se ha hecho mucho más escasa. Nos inquietan los pronunciamientos realizados por Fabien Robert, Secretario Mayor de Cultura y Patrimonio. En un artículo publicado en Rue 89 Bordeaux el Secretario Mayor se pregunta abiertamente 'si el arte contemporáneo aún existe’ y afirma que le gustaría ver cómo el CAPC se convierte en en una 'vitrina’ publicitaria de la ciudad. Afirmó para Liberation que 'el CAPC ha sido sujeto de intereses’, y que él ha visitado el lugar por meses, para hacer 'soucing’ y 'benchmarking’, con el fin de definir la orientación. Somos profesionales del arte, queremos a los museos y a sus públicos. Para nosotros, transmitir el goce y la inteligencia de las obras de arte al mayor número de personas es un asunto crucial. Nos revuelve el estómago ver que, a través de los años, de una directora del CAPC a otra, recurren los mismos problemas: presiones constantes sobre la dirección del museo, que queda atrapada en los corsets de la administración municipal, falta de apoyo institucional, y el debilitamiento de la estabilidad financiera. El CAPC tiene una historia prestigiosa de importancia en el horizonte internacional. Sería un error dramático cortarla por motivaciones políticas de vista corta.  

A través de esta carta, afirmamos nuestra afiliación al CAPC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Boudeaux) y al programa de su actual directora. Nos permitimos interpelar al Ministro de Cultura Francés, Françoise Nyssen, por la situación en Boudeaux, donde la supervivencia del arte contemporáneo parece estar en juego.
