a/n → i honestly feel so much better. like genuinely, it feels really good to be back. i’m not semi back, IM BACK 100% this blog is my number one priority again just like it was when i first started it back !! i miss writing for this blog. i got three hyoeun so i decided to mixed them all into one.

“Hyoeun! You’re back!” You sprung up from your chair, running toward the door, jumping into the arms of Hyoeun. He let out a small laugh, wrapping his arms around your frame.

Your brother rolled his eyes, setting down his backpack across the room, “I’m back too!”

“Shut up, no one cares,” You teased. Hyoeun unraveled his arms around you, setting down his backpack on the sofa, “Sorry the tour lasted longer than we thought. It’s so good to be back. But of course, I got you a little something.”

He unzipped his backpack, pulling out a polaroid camera. You let out a small gasp, “You didn’t.”

“I saw it in a shop window and I couldn’t help but think about you, so I got it for you,” He explained, placing the camera in your hands, “(Brother’s Name) told me not to get it for you but I couldn’t help it. I hope you like it.”

“Hyoeun, I love it! Thank you so much! This will make studying abroad better! I’m going to go put it in my room. I’ll be right back and then we can talk about the tour.” You rushed to your room, placing the camera down.

Hyoeun’s eyes landed on your brother who stood in the kitchen with a glare, “You know, I’m getting really tired of this crush you have on Y/N.”

“Hey, shut up. She might hear you,” Hyoeun whispered violently.

Your brother rolled his eyes, grabbing a bottle of water as well as an apple, “You should tell her soon. She’ll be heading off to the states to study in a few days. And then it’ll be months before we get to see her again. You better confess now or she’ll find a man in the states.”

“She wouldn’t do that, right?”

“We don’t know for sure. Life happens.”

It was pretty obvious that Hyoeun had a thing for you. At first, he didn’t think anything of it. He blew it off, believing he just felt bad for you. Just a few months ago, your highschool sweetheart dumped you over text and he was there for you throughout the whole thing. You don’t know where you would be without him.

Hyoeun had always seen you as a little girl, but after that, he began to see you for the woman you had become. The strong, independent woman who didn’t need anyone. Miss Independent was what he had called you.

He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t thought about you in more than a friendly way.

“Thanks, B/N, that’s totally what I wanted to hear.”

You made yourself known, almost skipping into the room, “What did I miss?”

“Nothing,” B/N lied, taking a gulp of his water and heading to his room down the hall. You looked to Hyoeun, “What was that about?”

“Nothing. He’s just being a dumbass. Hey, you wanna get out of here and do something. I’ve been cooped up all day getting here. Let’s go out and do something.”

“Okay! Just let me change!”

“No time for that. You look fine, let’s go, Y/N,” He reached out, taking your hand into his, pulling you out of your shared apartment with your brother. You let out a small yelp, following him nevertheless, not thinking twice.

You and Hyoeun spent several hours out on the town, doing the same old shit the two of you love to do. Go to the cinema and make fun of chick flicks, whoop his ass at air hockey at the arcade, eat street food until you were tired. And you sure did eat a lot. 

He was paying.

But you ate a little too much, upsetting your stomach. Your upset stomach growled back at you, making you whine as pain settled in. You placed your head on Hyoeun’s shoulder, “My tummy hurts.”

“That’s because you ate so much so fast. I told you to slow down but you didn’t listen to me,” He teased, wrapping an arm around your shoulders, pulling you closer, “And on top of that, you downed it all with soju. B/N would kill me if he found out I let you have soju.”

“I’m a big girl~!” You responded, a hmph leaving your lips, making Hyoeun smile, “Sure you are, Y/N. You’re the biggest best girl there ever was. But you’re not a woman because women don’t refer to their stomach as tummies.”

You nodded your head in protest, “This little woman does~!”

“You’re so cute,” He said softly, hoping you wouldn’t hear, but of course you had. You may have been a bit tipsy but that didn’t mean your senses weren’t working.

“Thank you,” You hiccuped.

“Alright, Little Woman. Let’s get you home.”

Some time along the way, you found yourself riding his back on the way back to your apartment. As you arrived, you noticed your brother’s car missing, “He probably went go see his girlfriend or something.”

“I was hoping he would be here to tuck you into bed,” Hyoeun admitted. 

You rested your chin on the top of his head, “You can’t tuck me into bed?”

“I’m not even allowed in your room, Y/N,” Hyoeun mentioned. 

“Yeah, when B/N’s here. But he’s not. You can chill in my room now though.”

“I don’t know,” He added. 

“It’s fine. Don’t be a pussy.”

He rolled his eyes, “Alright, alright. Fine, I’ll tuck you into bed. But you have to promise you’ll go to bed.”

“I promise.”

And that was a lie. As soon as you walked into your room, you felt ten times better, making Hyoeun sit on the edge of your bed as you walked across your room, showing him things you picked up, collected and took pictures of while he was on tour.

“You did all this while I was on tour?” He questioned. 

“Yeah. You were gone for a while. And I didn’t have a friend to talk to. I even got a tattoo. Wanna see?” 

“You got a tattoo?!”

You nodded, taking off your jacket to reveal a white tank top. You walked closer to him, showing the tattoo on your shoulder, “Some of it is covered.” You took off one of the straps to allow him to see the full tattoo. His eyes widened by your action. He gulped deeply trying to focus on your tattoo, removing any other thoughts out of his head.

The tattoo was of a rose and a crescent moon. Upon noticing your tattoo, he noticed a deep purple bruise just next to it, that looked as if it was formed just a few days prior, “Y/N, what’s that?”

“My tattoo?”

“No, what’s next to it.”

You looked down at your shoulder noticing the medium-sized bruise, “Oh it’s a bruise. I got it a couple of days ago. I think I um...I um...I ran into the door and hit shoulder first.”

“You’re lying to me. Where did you get that bruise? And if you tell me another lie so help me god, Y/N!”

Your head fell below your shoulders, unable to look him in the eyes.

“He came over to get me back.”

Hyoeun had already known who he was, “He put his hands on you?!”

“He grabbed my shoulder when I tried to walk away from him. I don’t think he meant it so I didn’t say anything. But hey, it’s okay. He’s gone and he’s never coming back. Hyoeun, I’m okay now. Hey, look at me.” You quickly picked your head up, placing both of your hands on either side of his face, making him look to you. 

You could see the anger expression in his eyes, almost angry enough to kill.

“He still put his hands on you and for that I’m going to kill him!”

You shook your head at him, placing your hands on his shoulders to sit him down, “Please don’t. Don’t do anything stupid! I know how you get, you’ll get all riled up and you won’t stop until there’s blood. You can’t go to jail! I won’t get to see you everyday when I leave to study abroad. And if you’re in jail how will I get to tell you how I feel?”

“How...how you feel?” He repeated, earning a nod from you. “I love you Hyoeun. I really do. And I know you don’t feel the same about me. I know I’m just your best friend’s baby sister and I but I―”

“I love you too, Y/N,” He interrupted.

“You...do?”

“I have since your break up. I know it was wrong of me to have these feelings for you. For one, you’re B/N’s baby sister and two, you were going through a hard time. I didn’t want to somewhat manipulate you into loving me,” He added.

“You know, this isn’t how I pictured confessing to you. I always thought it would be the day I leave. You’d chase me down in the airport, confess and then tell me you love me and then we’d kiss.”

He let out a laugh, “And then cue the 360 spinning camera. I’m sorry our confessions weren’t like a drama.”

“It’s okay, I think I like this much better,” You giggled.

He wrapped a gentle arm around your waist, pulling you into his lap. You felt your face get hot. You could feel his breath on your face. You had never been so close, “Hyoeun...”

“Can I kiss you?”

“Please...I mean yes,” You corrected yourself, nervously. He leaned forward, pressing his lips against yours in a passionate kiss. You felt your body explode, butterflies had turned into large birds, their wings flapping roughly in your stomach.

You had waited for this moment and it was finally happening. You deepened the kiss, lightly pushing Hyoeun back onto your bed.

With your lips still attached, he flipped you over, allowing himself on top. He pulled away from your lips, opening his eyes staring down at your frame. Your eyes shot open, your eyes looking into his roaming eyes. You felt nervous under her eyes.

You closed your legs tightly, biting down on your bottom lip. Hyoeun looked into your eyes, “Y/N, I...I can’t. B/N will kill me.”

“Hyoeun, I’m an adult. B/N can’t control me anymore. And you shouldn’t let him control you either. We’re both adults here and I’m giving you permission, that should be the only permission you should need tonight. No one else’s.”

You sat up slightly, wanting to press your lips on his again only for him to push you back down. As your back hit the cold duvet on your bed, chills went down your spine as you gulp.

“Can I take care of you tonight?”

“But what if I want to take care of you too?”

He leaned down, pressing a sweet kiss onto the bruise on your shoulder, lightly. You closed your eyes, taking in his touch. 

“Taking care of you tonight will be enough for me. I want to show you that I really do love you and I want you to feel every inch of my love,” He whispered against your skin, before leaving a trail of sweet, passionate kisses from your bruised shoulder up to your neck.

You simply nodded your head, leaning your head to the side to allow him more access. You feel your heart race, the sound thumping sounding throughout your body. You were sure he could hear it too, as you felt him smirk against your neck.

You reached up to his shirt, tugging lightly. 

“Do you want me to take it off,” He questioned, his face still in your neck.

“Yes, please,” You answered. He removed himself from you, sitting up. He slipped his shirt off, allowing it to fall on the floor, “Don’t drool now.”

“Shut it,” You giggled, sitting up and removing your shirt and bra with ease, allowing them to fall onto the floor next to Hyoeun’s shirt, his eyes falling onto your chest.

“Hey! Don’t stare,” You blushed, covering your chest with your arms. “Hey, don’t cover your chest now. Don’t get all shy and cute. Lay down for me again.”

You did as he said, your nipples hardening. He kissed down your neck. He left hickeys and marks along the way down your chest, marking you as his. A small sigh left your lips as he continued to leave marks where no one but the two of you could see them.

Feeling accomplished, he continued to move his lips down, inching ever so slowly to your warmth.

And that’s when you had heard the front door slam shut, followed by a call of your name, “Y/N! Did you make it home yet?! Hyoeun didn’t answer his phone and I wanted to make sure you made it home!”

Your eyes shot open as you quickly jumped up, rushing toward your room door and locking it. “Y-Yeah I’m fine. I made it back a couple of hours ago! Maybe...maybe Hyoeun went to sleep or something. He sure was tired when he dropped me off,” You lied, your eyes looking back to the sin-filled eyes of Hyoeun, approaching you slowly yet seductively. 

You could already see the devilishly look in his eyes. You shook your head at him. He gently pushed you against the door.

“Hyoeun, B/N is home. Don’t try anything,” You violently whispered to him, a smirk forming on his face, “Just don’t be too loud and we have nothing to worry about. You gonna be a good girl for me? Huh?”

“Hyoeun...” You trailed off.

“Y/N, did you say something?” You heard your brother’s voice once more.

“N-N-No! I was just...talking to myself. Just a bit sleep deprived and I’m talking how stressed I’ll probably be studying in the states,” You rambled, going on and on to distract yourself and trying your hardest to make your brother believe you. 

As you rambled, Hyoeun dropped to his knees in front of you, pulling down your shorts and panties. He placed soft kisses on either of your thighs before giving your warmth a deep, long lick, interrupting you midsentence. You let out a loud gasp followed by a loud curse. Hyoeun grinned at your reaction. 

“Y/N? You okay?! Is everything okay?!” B/N asked in a panic. 

“Y-Yeah. Everything is fine. I just dropped something on the carpet. I’ll clean it.”

“You’re acting weird. Are you sure you’re okay?!”

“I-I’m fine, Y/N.”

Hyoeun wrapped his arms around your legs, making sure to hold them in place as he latched onto your clit. Your body jolted slightly, soft mewls leaving your lips. 

You slapped a hand over your mouth closing your eyes tightly to keep from moaning. Hyoeun allowed his tongue to twirl around your clit before taking it into his mouth, sucking gently. 

You uncovered your mouth, trying to keep your voice to a whisper, but your heavy breathing making it hard, “Fuck you’re so good at this. I wonder how many times you’ve done this. Is this your first time finding the clit?” You joked.

He removed himself, unraveling one of his hands to land a hard smack directly to your clit, making you let out a loud yelp followed by a whine. 

“You just wanna get caught huh?” He smirked.

“What the fuck was that?!” B/N questioned, his voice now on the other side of the door, frightening you.

B/N stood in utter shock and embarrassment for what felt like forever, Hyoeun managing to slip two fingers deep into your warmth, making you arch your back.

“I’m...gonna go to sleep. You...you have fun,” B/N finally chimed, heading to his room and shutting the door behind him. All he wanted was to forget those words even came out of your mouth, but he knew it would be forever engraved in his mind. 

Hyoeun fingered you at a rapid pace, already feeling you clenching around his fingers. Your legs were beginning to shake as your small bundle of nerves couldn’t hold in all of the pressure anymore.

You let go, one hand onto the doorknob, the other clawing at the door. Hyoeun continued to pump his fingers in and out of you, dragging your orgasm out for as long as he could, a small giggle leaving his lips, “Sorry for embarrassing you.”

Yosemite National Park, California

Stop #7, July 29-August 2

We made it to Yosemite, and this time it was much smoother than our arrival at Sequoia. We hit the road at 7:45 AM to run errands and get organized before getting to Yosemite. We’ve been out of service for almost a week now, and while I love being off the grid, not having the internet to do our research was part of the problem when we got to Sequoia. So we sat in the car for a half an hour and researched what we needed to. No reservations were available for campgrounds in the park, and first come first serve usually has a line of people waiting by 6 AM… on the weekends. A Monday arrival was on our side, and after talking to a park ranger near the entrance of the park we learned about Bridalveil campground, 20 miles up the road currently had 25 camp spots available. FINALLY. Not only is it gorgeous, but there seems to be an unwritten rule where everyone is respectful of their surrounding and stays quiet. Maybe its because this campsite is known to have the worst bear problem, or maybe its because they don’t have running water in their bathrooms. Either way, settling into our camp spot in Yosemite National Park, we are very happy. 

So the bears.. yeah. Okay, here’s what I’ve learned so far. Black bears are almost never black; they are usually dark brown, brown, or even blonde. Their paws are so soft they are nearly silent when they approach. Their sense of smelly is “several times better than that of a bloodhounds”. They will do anything for food or even products. If we see one we need to yell, making loud noises to deter it. Since this campsite has a “bear problem” they are really strict with their citations, fining you if you break any rules. Because we are in a camper, we don’t have to use the bear lockers that are stationed at every campsite. But, we did have to put all of our food away so that if a bear were to peak inside our window they wouldn’t see anything. This even includes our toiletries! They will eat toothpaste and lotion, anything with an odor. Your car is not a secure space to store things, as bears have ripped open car doors to get the food inside. I don’t know about you but Geico won’t cover hungry bear damage. Lolzzzz (stole that joke from our campground host).

On our first night we went to Glacier Point for sunset. Its not a hike, but really just an insane view point. The moment I saw it I swear I lost my breath. There are “breathtaking” views but then there are views that literally take your breath away. And this was one of them.

While the photo ops were truly stunning, Glacier point got me excited for all the hikes we’ll do in the follow days offering us different perspectives of the same view but with the reward of the climb and the lack of crowds. But maaaaaaan was I wrong about the latter.

On Tuesday we spent the first half of the day in Yosemite Valley where they have a handful of dog friendly “trails”. We walked to lower Yosemite Falls, through a meadow, then found a nice beach spot to sit and relax in the shade. There was a group of family friends both snorkeling through the river and floating in it. We chatted with one of the fathers who informed us that they do a river clean up with their family every year; its become an annual tradition. So cool!!! He also informed us of some fun things we could do here and outside the park with Jaxon. So we continued to relax on the water, enjoyed watching a family of ducks, and chatted with a few other families that found their way to the water. After an hour or so it went from us being the only ones on the beach to not an open spot for anyone else to join. And thats our que to leave! We hoped early morning and late evening activities would have us avoiding the crowd, and while its been confirmed that mid day is crazy busy, there really is no way of avoiding the crowds in Yosemite in July, even if it is the middle of the week!

The second half of the day we hiked Sentinel Dome which gives you almost the same view as Glacier Point the night before, but instead its an actually hike with a full 360 degree view! It was beautiful.

On the way down these two Jewish girls (we knew because of the long skirts with leggings underneath) asked us how fay they were until the top of the trail, and so we started chatting. Of course it came out that that three of us are Jewish girls from New York, and then they proceeded to tell me about their Chabad and handed me shabbat candles to light this coming Friday night. Usually I don’t think twice about this sort of thing (yes its happened before), but I took this interaction as a sign for my Tanta Tania. She is my Zeidy’s sister, and she was in the hospital nearing the end of her life. (Tanta is aunt and Zeidy is Grandpa in yiddish). Being that she is a Holocaust surviver and carried on with life raising a beautiful Jewish family, I want to light candles for her this week. Timing is weird, and powerful. I thought about her and tonight’s interaction for the rest of the night through the morning.

Meanwhile, another mistake, we thought Wednesday would be the least busy day at Zion, being smack in the middle of the week. Wednesday is too early to start the weekend and is also too late to extend to, but man where we wrong AGAIN. We woke up at 5:30AM to get ready for the challenging hike to Vernal and Nevada falls. We started by 7:20 on the dot and were not even close to being alone on the trail. This hike is a 6.7 mile hike with nearly 2,200 feet elevation gain and was definitely a challenge for me. For Sean on the other hand, a piece of cake. I don’t get it; he has asthma and climbs mountains 4x faster than me! GRRRRR. I’m a slow poke. But HEY, I made it to the top. Vernal falls was first and truly stunning. Getting to the top of Nevada was also beautiful, and thankfully less crowded. We made it back to the trailhead around 12:30 and holy crap was it SWAMPED with people, most of them not having a clue what they are getting themselves into! I cannot imagine what this trail is like on a Saturday or Sunday. 

If you scroll back up to the photos from Glacier Point with two water falls, one above the other, thats this last hike we did! 

On our drive back to the campsite I took off my shoes and dozed off until I woke up to Sean yelling at me excitedly to get out of the car. I was so confused and didn’t understand what was going on; “but I don’t have my shoes on” and Sean said “You’re a photographer, you don’t need shoes”. All the sudden I was surrounded by other families that also pulled over to see what was going on, and I couldn’t see the bear in the distance for several minutes until it came out of the shadow. How the heck did people spot that from the road?! But it really was such a beautiful site; the sun was shining and the bear was surrounded by wild flowers.

Thursday was a lazy day for us other than the easy 4 mile dog friendly hike we ventured to with Jaxon. We rested for the remainder of the day, ate and played a ton of Kaluche. Yes, Sean is still beating me. The current tally for games won is 12-6, but I’m coming for him….

Friday morning we hit the road to head to Lake Tahoe, but when we got service I got news of my Tanta Tania’s passing. We made the call to head to Sacramento where one of my best friends Alexis lives with her partner Mamadou. From there I can get a direct flight to NY to be with my family for the funeral while Sean and Jaxon have a house to stay in. Given the situation I would want nothing more than to share positive memories of her with family and pay my respects. So thats what I did. We will resume our travels in a little while.

Day два.

Day 2. Woke up and completely forgot I was in St. Petersburg for a moment. My bed at home is  a queen, and the bed at this hotel is for a tiny person (in fact, I think my bed at ND was larger...) Anyway, I rolled over as per usual, and completely rolled off the bed. 

I never would have thought, in my wildest dreams, I would one day wake up in Russia. Here’s to just pulling the trigger and making it happen. 

Today, as mentioned yesterday, is Hermitage day. I didn’t know what exactly to expect, except all blogs mentioned to a) buy your ticket in advance (online) and b) get there early. The museum opens at 10, and I had planned on getting there at 10, except halfway through the 20 minute walk I realized I forgot my wallet and visa so I had to go walk back to the hotel and then walk back again, basically adding another 30 minutes to my trip. I arrived around 10:30.

I will say, walking up to the Winter Palace (Hermitage) was surreal. It’s HUGE.

I’ve seen Buckingham Palace in London and Versailles in Paris. I will say that they are NOTHING compared to the Hermitage Museum in terms of shear size. It’s kind of crazy that those arches completely conceal the Palace until you start to walk through it. Then you see like...part of the Palace, but it’s not until you walk through the arch that there is this instantaneous reveal. Included in the reveal is the shock of just seeing the Palace in full + the huge size of it spanning your vision across the X-axis + all the blue sky and empty space that just silences you for a moment. 

SIDE NOTE: For whatever stupid, immature reason, every time I think of the “reveal”, I think of that scene from Mario 64 when you’re running towards a photo of the Princess and it turns out to be Bowser. No, I’m not drunk, don’t ask me why I think of these things at the most random times. And yes, I did spend 15 minutes searching for this photo collage. 

Anyway. I am sure the Winter Palace is GORGEOUS during winter. The acoustics of the space when it’s covered in snow must be like...next level. I’m sure St. Petersburg during the winter is amazing. 

If you want a history lesson on the Hermitage, the Hermitage website has a great timeline. Again, as with the other blogs, I’m not going to be going into detail about images of the place or the history of the pieces exhibited. So many other blogs have done it so much better and I’m not going to butcher that. I’ll just mention a few things that stuck out to me, and you can Google around and figure it out.

I will say that if you do visit, I can offer a couple of tips you may want to follow.

1) The map. The map is confusing but not. You’ll just find yourself getting annoyed because, when you know where you are going, the gaggle of tourists and tourist groups will spin you around and suddenly you forget which way is which. Because the museum is HUGE (I saw maybe 1/8th of the museum in 4-5 hours?) you have to prioritize what to see. Keep in mind that, as time elapses, the museum becomes more and more inundated with the dreaded tourist groups, basically making your chances of getting a clear photo of anything nill. 

2) Tourists (a.k.a. the “Boos”). See the map below. The Hermitage has 3 floors. Below is a floor plan of probably the most popular floor, thanks to Mr. da Vinci and many of the decorative palace rooms (amongst other exhibits):

The good thing is that the map kind of pulls out the most famous exhibits and shows you what room they are in. This makes your job of figuring out where you need to go to cross out those items from your bucket list easy. The bad part: The enemy (a.k.a. tourists groups a.k.a. “boos”) also know where these pieces are and are racing as well to find them. The good news: the boos are with tourist groups and have to wait until the tour guide guides them to the room with the exhibit. So, you have time to beat them to it and snag the photo if you are quick. 

Just like in Mario, as time progresses and you aren’t being proactive, more and more of these guys are going to flood the Museum and follow you and clog up the exhibits. So, how do you win? I suggest getting to the museum first thing, then IMMEDIATELY source those famous exhibits, get your photos, then start at the beginning. Most of the tourists are going to be spending a large portion of their time taking photos of the great hall, which leaves you time to sneak past. Case in point:

The line to da Vinci. It was actually way worse a bit earlier when I came around again. I managed to get there early enough and snagged a decent photo:

In general, just like Versailles, the rooms are huge and ornate and absolutely beautiful. I was standing by a window, looking out into the courtyard from what was probably a ballroom in the palace, and thought to myself who else, years ago, was gazing forlornly (or with happiness, or deep in thought) out this same window.

I think that is the most magical part about these palace museums: people LIVED here. People also died here, were executed, fell in love, gave birth, went mad. And when you see relics of those like ridiculous looking Russian uniforms or weird trinkets from decades past, you have to remember that, no, these weren’t fashioned after film props, but film props fashioned after the real living thing. And the real living thing from 100+ years ago is right in front of you. 

It’s pretty spectacular. 

Oh, so this was exciting: The were having a temporary exhibit, and it was REMBRANDT!! Mike! I’m sure you have seen most of these because they sourced the pieces from the Leiden collection...maybe you have seen some of these at the Frick?

Anyway, there was NO PHOTOGRAPHY so I couldn’t really snag photos of pieces specifically. 

I did find myself in a Jean-Baptiste while lost in the French wing:

I didn’t and couldn’t wander the halls for the full 4-5 hours straight. I took a couple of breaks, grabbing a coffee at the cafe for 15 minutes before trying again. I do suggest you break up your visit to the Hermitage into two days; it really is the only way to not feel like your brain is going to explode. 

Afterwards, I took a walk outside by the water behind the Palace. 

Gratuitous selfie. That’ll be two hundred rubles. 

At this point, I had about 2.5 hours to kill before I needed to make my way to the Mariinsky Theater for the performance. So, I did what anyone should do, and that is wander around and picked up a snack to munch on (sorry, no photo of munchies).

There were people painting on the lawn, and I meant to come back and scope out the progress, but became distracted so I didn’t. I did manage to view a live performance (there are performers EVERYWHERE) and I’ll have to post in a separate blog entry because I still can’t figure out how to take the video from my phone and stick it here. 

I stopped at a progressive burger joint (in terms of menu options) for my “snack” (I didn’t eat breakfast despite my large leftovers still sitting in the refrigerator) and ate one of these guys sans burger sauce:

It’s essentially a falafal burger with cucumbers and halved grape tomatoes inside. The bun was my least favorite part (larger in circumference than the patty, which drives me INSANE) so I ditched it angrily. The bun and the burger should be the same size, and the patty should be thicker than each half of the bun. If the top bun is thicker than the patty, the bun is trash. BESIDES THAT ISSUE, the patty was actually really flavorful, and the veggies were (surprise!) slightly pickled. I wasn’t a huge fan of the background of dill I tasted, but that’s fine. The lunch hit the spot and I felt alive again. 

I know, call me a hypocrite for yelling about wasting food and here I am ditching a perfectly good bun. Well, arguably it wasn’t perfectly good, but I did take a bite and decided I much preferred the insides. Whatever. To quote Trump, “Who cares, we won!”

ASHLEY SIDE NOTE: It’s actually been great being overseas, because I have been shielded from all the US politics. However, I did catch a headline today and I mistakenly checked out Trump’s interview and wow...glad I am over here.

Eventually, I made my way to the theater via Uber (there is no Lyft here, and taxis are a little...shady. And slow. And expensive). I will have to comment on Russian driving (or, driving in Russia):

1) It’s nuts. Nuttier than cabbies and NYC driving. Nuttier than driving in France. Probably not nuttier than driving in Vietnam or other places where you are competing with scooters and cars, but it’s still pretty nutty.

2) However, I noticed that they do one thing correctly and without anger that we don’t do in America, and that is merging. In Russia, they utilize the “zipper merge” technique quite patiently and diligently, which, after taking 3 Ubers and cursing under my breath at the “assholes” who merged at the last minute, I realized that this was common and drivers didn’t sweat it. 

“Those apparently rude drivers are putting more of the roadway to use and thus helping speed things along, in much the same way water flows faster through a funnel than through a straw.”

3) There is no bus lane or real lanes in general (I mean, there are lines painted in the road but people disregard them) and cars are just weaving in and out, trying to avoid buses, bikers, etc. And everyone drives stick, so it can get a little rough at times.

Anyway, I manged to get to the theater at the nick of time (traffic is TERRIBLE) and had decent balcony seating:

The Mariiinsky Theater isn’t huge, but the acoustics are really good. The ballet itself was really interesting. Interesting in the sense that this performance, in terms of skill, seemed to be this mix of gracefulness and like...cirque du soleil. I haven’t seen many ballets, but the ones I have seen did not showcase these magnificent bouts of exaggerated athleticism as performed by these dancers (i.e. 360 degree turns ad infinitum, Labron Jamesesque slam dunk vertical leaps, etc). Don’t get me wrong; these dancers are incredible and it was fun to watch them exhibit their unrelenting strength. However, I felt, where the narrative fell short, the shock and awe carried it through.

 I have to be honest and say that I’m not the type to sit through a long, dry opera or ballet, so Le Corsaire broke through any of that fear and was much appreciated. Given we are in the world of #metoo, the plot didn’t really adhere to the moral standard (the narrative is much about the selling of women as slaves, that people of the Middle Eastern ethnicity is less than smart, etc). Yeah, not the best message. However, despite the immature and possibly offensive plot, the artistry was really good...the backgrounds and costumes were beautiful, and the music was moving. I really liked the duo in Act II...I believe it’s the Adagio, but I will have to go back through the soundtrack to figure it out. 

Afterwards, I ate a really light and late dinner and came back to the hotel where I am writing this. It’s past midnight, and I am officially 63 years old!*

Tomorrow, I think i will visit the Faberge museum, then the Anna Akhamatova Museum, then a food market called  the Kuznechny Market where I will try to buy some caviar, THEN bday dinner, then I need to hit the hay because I have a 6AM train out of Russia and into Estonia. I am really feeling sad that my stay in Russia is ending, but excited to see two more countries.

Thank you! So I have somewhat unsuccessfully attempted not to be Really Negative about Homecoming, except on twitter where I’ve clearly given up altogether, but heads up: I’m about to be pretty negative because I care way too much about Peter Parker. My opinions are my own, etc. Right off the bat: I actually do think Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to be a fun summer movie. It’s probably well-written and engaging! It looks like a good movie about a teenage superhero coming into his own and I’m excited about the diverse cast. 

It also, in my own opinion, looks like a terrible movie about Peter Parker.

There was nothing wrong with the review (it was in USA Today) so much as that literally everything it described made me, a person who loves Peter Parker, cringe. Full disclaimer that I haven’t seen Homecoming yet and it’s plausible I might like it in the end! I won’t, but it’s plausible! So everything I’m talking about is based on interviews with the cast and creators/trailers and released scenes/etc. 

But I’ve got so much beef with this movie I practically own a cattle ranch. 

I’m just going to try to hit my main complaints: Ned Leeds, or, This Should Have Been a Miles Morales Movie, Peter as a New Yorker, Peter Parker vs Spider-Man: A Fake Argument, and Why We Actually Do Need To Know How Ben Died, Thanks. “Traincat, how much have you thought about this?” I don’t want to talk about it! Except I do, under the cut:

1) Ned Leeds. This has been pointed out before, but it bears repeating until all my metaphorical cows come home: Homecoming’s “Ned Leeds” is literally Ganke Lee, Miles Morales’ best friend. Look at Ganke. Now look at 616 Ned. Back to Ganke. Yeah. He looks like him, and he appears to act like him from the little we’ve seen. “Ned” knows Peter is Spider-Man, the way Ganke knows Miles is Spider-Man. Ned is enthusiastic about Peter being Spider-Man, the way Ganke is. Ned’s playing with Legos in a Homecoming trailer, Ganke loves Legos, etc. They didn’t even try to hide the fact that they stole a major Miles Morales character for the benefit of a Peter Parker movie. 

It’s possible Ned Leeds will resemble Ned Leeds more closely when the movie comes out, in which case I look forward to Spider-Man 3: Still At Home, where Peter passionately makes out with Ned’s wife and then Ned dies in Germany. But I have my doubts about that.

One of my problems is that I, personally, am not particularly interested in Peter Parker in high school. (WHERE is the movie where he is 30, teaching high school, and played by Alfie Enoch? I want it. You want it. We all want it. Look at him. He’s perfect.) If we’re going to do a teenage Spider-Man, why NOT Miles Morales, who IS the Spider-Man currently in high school, and who HAS been a kid since his introduction several years ago. Peter graduated high school in Amazing Spider-Man #28. There are over 700+ issues of Amazing Spider-Man alone. It’s time to leave the idea of Peter Parker as a character perpetually in high school behind.

BUT, if we were going to make a Teen Peter Parker movie, make it actually about Peter, because the way this is marketed (the gaming laptop commercial? The Audi one where he’s taking a driver’s test? The banking quiz? I cannot think of anything that screams Spider-Man less than German automobiles) sure looks like this is a movie about Relatable Teen Hero Boy-Man, who may be a good kid but he’s not Peter Parker, and who is here to sell you, the viewer, some stuff.

(I cannot believe consumerism giveth the Spider-Mobile, and consumerism taketh it away.)

2) New York! Where I am typing this post from, actually! True story: I never would have even read this review, but my mom read it and to quote: “There’s going to be a problem. Aunt May drives him around.” NAH. N A H. Listen, I know people in New York have cars. I know people in Queens have cars. I know this so well that I have my aunt’s car, which before me sat in a parking lot in Queens 360 days out of the year. Almost any scene you could tell in a regular car, you could tell in a subway car. Also, you can see Washington DC in the trailer, which means that at some point the movie is going to take Peter out of New York, a move I cannot possibly see the point to. I’m going to be an Obnoxious New Yorker for a hot second: Other superheroes might live in New York, but Peter Parker is New York. He has to have a relationship with the city itself. This is one of the things I think The Amazing Spider-Man movies did wonderfully: looking at New York actually felt like looking at New York. The scene with the crane operators, the webbed I LOVE YOU, Gwen’s fire escape, or when he jaywalks through traffic in Union Square. The big fight in Times Square. Homecoming already didn’t FEEL like New York from the trailers and now a chunk of the movie isn’t even taking place in it? Aunt May’s going to drive her nephew around? What’s the point? Why would you strip the New Yorker (”fuck you” means “have a nice day”) from a superhero defined by it? 

(PS it’s because Peter is a heavily Jewish-coded character and taking the New Yorker out of him makes him less so. See also, down below, the removal of his guilt/responsibility complex.)

3) He’s Just Always Spider-Man, Guys. The USA Today review also includes a quote from Tom Holland about how “Spider-Man is not Peter Parker” and they’ve “made quite a clear divide between the two” and not to be shady but I think the biggest mistake people make when writing Peter Parker is thinking that there’s ANY difference between Peter and Spider-Man, except that sometimes he has to pretend like lifting the couch takes any effort. He’s always Spider-Man. The kind of confidence you get from being able to throw a Jeep, or crush steel pipes with your bare hands? That doesn’t go away just because you take off a mask. It’s a shallow take. Peter, as a character, isn’t a very reliable narrator of his own personality – you have to look at his actions. Don’t get distracted by his jokes. There’s no divide.

This ties into my problems with the apparently heavy presence of Iron Man – the review calls him a “reluctant father figure” to Peter – beyond my disbelief over not trusting Spider-Man of all characters to carry his own movie. I understand that the MCU is as built over RDJ’s portrayal of Tony Stark as the 616 Universe is built on the legacy of the Fantastic Four, but one of the things I keep in mind when writing Peter is that he doesn’t truly respect anyone else’s authority but his own. As soon as that spider bit him, that was it, he was his own ultimate authority. And now he’s the “Kid Avenger” and Iron Man is making all his tech? Why, when Captain America: Civil War went out of its way to highlight that he’s a tech genius? Why the effort to make Peter Parker less than he is? Oh, right, Relatable Teen Hero Boy-Man. As an advertiser’s daughter, I don’t like being so OBVIOUSLY sold “Spider-Man! He’s just like you! Buy an Audi.” 

4) Ben Parker Must Die. Uncle Ben’s death won’t be shown in the movie, they said! HUZZAH, a million voices cried out, drowning out my own cries of, BUT HOW DO I KNOW WHO PETER PARKER IS IF I DON’T KNOW THE EXACT CIRCUMSTANCES OF BEN PARKER’S DEATH.

But this is fine, I said. This is okay. You don’t need to show Ben Parker’s death to feel the impact of it, of course! A skillful storyteller can get around that easily! 

Yeah uh so Ben’s death isn’t going to have a large impact on Peter in the movie at all, apparently, which is AN ISSUE when this is THE defining moment.

As for why Ben was left out, Watts says he wanted to go all out on focusing on how awesome it would be to become Spider-Man, going from a geeky teen to possessing superhuman powers. Dealing with the fact that Peter is partially guilty for a loved one’s death would have put the dampers on that. 

Cool cool cool so you wanted the power and you didn’t want the responsibility. To quote tumblr user myvisagewasted: “Literally the thematic point of Spider-Man is that if you can shatter someone’s face, you GOTTA put a damper on that” and I 10000% agree. Peter, in 616, was initially selfish with his powers. He was an angry teenager who declared he’d only take care of his aunt and his uncle, and that “the rest of the world can go hang.” The Uncle Ben dies, and Peter starts to change. Putting “dampers” on the awesomeness of suddenly being as strong as forty men is called character development, and stripping the guilt complex from Peter is, whether intentional or not, further attempts to hide the character’s Jewish coding. You don’t have to dwell on how much of an impact Ben Parker’s death made on Peter, but I do strongly believe you cannot brush it off because it wouldn’t be fun. 

(Ask me about murder lovebirds Spideytorch, or, What If? Uncle Ben’s Death Didn’t Change Peter.)

How Ben dies also matters with regards to who Peter is – for example, in Spider-Man Noir, Ben dies before Peter becomes Spider-Man, and he isn’t shot but rather ripped to shreds and partially eaten by the Vulture. As a result, Noir!Peter is PRETTY COOL with guns and shooting people, whereas 616 Peter has an extreme aversion. If there’s no specifics about Ben’s death, how do we know who Peter is?

Anyway I also believe Peter isn’t his fully formed self until he feels partially responsible for the deaths of three loved ones, so. There’s that. (George Stacy Or Appropriate George Stacy Stand-In Also Must Die.)

Walking Dead/Smoky and The Bandit crossover fanfiction. No, really.

So, I saw a familiar semi trailer on an episode of The Walking Dead last year:

Turns out it is the very same trailer that was part of Bandit's semi (although if you ask me, it should have been called Snowman's semi, since he drove it through most of the movie). Well, that got my creative juices flowing. How did that trailer end up on the side of the road, during the zombie apocalypse? “Bandit, this is the Snowman. Looks like those deadheads got the highway backed up all the way up to the 360. C’mon back.”

Snowman released the mic before letting his frustration out with a series of curses. Not that anyone cared about cussing on the radio anymore, but old habits, and all. He braked the eighteen wheeler, looking for a way around the sea of walking dead that stretched across the two lane highway as far as the eye could see. Suggesting the herd stopped at the 360 mile marker was wishful thinking.

“Snowman, we’re working on it, son. But the interstate’s a no-go—full of parked cars to the Carolina state line. We gotta find a way through ‘em, even if you dent my rig.”

Well, then. Attracted by the truck’s rumbling diesel engine, the walkers had started moving his way. Snowman put the rig in reverse and started backing slowly, while considering his options. This was the part where he’d talk to Fred, if his poor old dog hadn’t passed away years ago. Maybe it was for the best.

He was down to an eighth of a tank. The trailer, still decorated from the glory days with its bandit and stagecoach décor, was empty after a failed supply run to the south. He could always abandon it and try to hike around the herd, to get back to his friends and family.

It would take forever.

For a moment Snowman rubbed his three day stubble, then picked up the mic again. “Bandit … you find a place for the group?”

“I did, but we used up about all our gas getting there. Safe place, Snowman—I already dropped off your wife and kids, they’re fine. Guy in charge there’s got a tiger. A real tiger! You gotta see it. I picked up some more friends, too.”

Snowman chuckled, but he also understood Bandit’s underlying meaning. He had to see it. Had to get there, and with their fuel about out, that would be their last stop. No more long hauls across the countryside. Well, they were getting too old for that, anyway.

But first he had to get there.

“Now, son, don’t do anything stupid. We’re on our way.”

“Heh. Bandit, son, I think ‘stupid’ and ‘get through’ might be connected.” Snowman backed up more, being careful to stay between the lines. No tow trucks, not anymore. After some mental calculations, he backed up another hundred feet. It was all about force versus control.

There were thousands of them, shambling toward him. Thousands. And what if they someday turned north, and headed toward his family’s new sanctuary?

“Bandit, you make sure they get taken care of, y’hear?”

“Snowman, now, we’re almost there--!”

Almost there in what? That light little Trans Am? It wouldn’t make it past the first row. Snowman checked his safety belt, jammed the truck into gear, and hit the gas.

As he worked through the gears, the empty truck picked up speed quickly. He barely even felt the first impacts, as bodies flew right and left, but soon the rig began to shudder and lose momentum. The steering wheel jerked as bodies piled up beneath the semi. Snowman gripped it harder, his foot still hard on the accelerator.

There were so many dead. He got only a glimpse of one before it hit the corner of the cab—the guy was a giant, probably this biggest man in Virginia, or maybe the whole Southeast. At least, that was the instant impression Snowman got of him—six foot eight easy, closing in on 400 pounds. He must have been an easy target for the walkers, but he looked freshly dead … or as close to fresh as the dead got, these days.

The giant disappeared, and the big rig veered to the right.

The steering wheel spun out of Snowman’s hands. Without the seatbelt he’d have been thrown across the cab, as the semi launched itself across a ditch and into a field. Cursing, he hauled the wheel to the left and hung on as the truck jounced its way back toward the road, losing speed way too fast.

Suddenly it surged forward—he’d lost the trailer in the grass behind him.

For a moment he thought he’d get control back, but now the engine began stuttering as he steered through a grassy area, looking for a good place to regain the pavement. When the front wheels hit the ditch again, they stayed there. Somehow he’d kept the truck upright, but as its engine went silent Snowman knew this was the end of the line.

He’d made it maybe three-quarters of the way through the herd. Now those that could still walk did, headed toward where they’d last seen noise and movement.

“Took a lot of 'em with us, though.” He had a knife, strapped to his belt. There was the metal bar by the door, the same one Bandit had used to check tire pressure since he hauled his first load, all those years ago. But when Snowman reached for it, it was gone, maybe bounced somewhere behind the seat. “Well, now.” Snowman scooped up the mic. “Bandit, this is the Snowman, you got your ears on?”

“Snowman, you keepin’ the sunny side up and the bloody side down?”

Snowman gave a short laugh. “Son, I’m still up, but the rig’s down for the count. Didn’t quite make it through that crowd of deadheads, they’re worse than hittin’ Atlanta at rush hour. Don’t think I’m gonna make our rendezvous.” So close. His hand closed over the knife hilt, but already the dead were approaching the cab door, clustering up by the dozens. At least Bandit and Frog would take care of his family.

Then he heard a sound he’d never imagined hearing again. A sound he used to hate.

A siren.

“What?” Far ahead, through spatters and streaks of blood on the truck windshield, red lights flashed. A truck engine roared as it plowed into the herd.

It moved forward relentlessly, the gore collecting on it blending with its red paint job. A fire truck.

“Okay, Snowman, if you can’t make the rendezvous, we’ll just have to bring the rendezvous to you. Ten-four?”

As the truck got closer Bandit’s grinning face—how did he keep that handsome mustache in this mess?—appeared behind the wheel. He had two passengers, a small female in the front and someone he couldn’t make out in the back. The truck knocked down the closest walkers, then stopped in line with the semi cab. Bandit had to keep a little distance to allow for door clearance, and a few walkers stumbled forward until the figure in the back opened his door and drew a revolver.

Holy crap. It can’t be.

“What are you waitin’ for, you sumbitch? Get your ass in the truck!” Hanging from the cab, Sheriff Buford T. Justice took one-handed aim and blew a hole in the nearest walker’s head. Three more shots, three more dead-on hits. Then he scooted across the back seat—pretty quickly, for someone his size—to give Snowman room.

It was an easy jump from semi to fire truck. Well, easy when you didn’t want to touch what was jumbled across the pavement between them.

As soon as the door closed, Bandit put the truck into reverse. His legendary driving ability served him well as he backed up in the same path he’d entered, using only the side mirrors to navigate. A few more walkers had stumbled into that route, but proved no problem for the fire engine’s powerful motor. Through it all, Bandit still had time to flash his friend a grin. “You all owe me for that truck!”

“But how--?” Snowman flailed his arm toward the uniformed man beside him, who he now realized had lost a lot of weight. “How--?”

Justice made a dismissive wave, then realized he still held the gun and holstered it. “You think the gol-durn apocalypse is gonna keep me from tracking you and the Bandit down?”

Snowman glanced at Frog--no, Carrie, since CB handles hadn't mattered for a long time. She'd turned to kneel on her seat so she could see them. He saw the sympathy in her eyes, which made him look at Justice more closely and see the hangdog look, the dark bags under his eyes. His hat was gone, his hair pure white. “Sheriff … um, where’s Junior?”

Justice made a scoffing noise. “After my wife passed on, Junior wasn’t worth a bag of hair.” He squared his shoulders. “He went down fightin’ though, I’ll give him that.”

“I’m sorry, Sheriff,” Carrie said. “He was a good boy.”

“Yeah, well. After that, seemed like there wasn’t anything left but pursuin’ you all. So that’s what I did.”

“You caught us, sure enough.” Having made it through the horde, Bandit turned the truck around and accelerated away. “We’ll be out of gas by the time we get back to that crazy king and his tiger, so looks like our chasing days are over.”

They were all silent for a moment, as the truck roared down the road. “Guess my wife will be glad about that,” Snowman finally said. “So, how did you find that place, anyway?”

Bandit laughed. “Got waved down by a guy who looks exactly like Jesus, he pointed us that way. Said we’d fit right in.”

“So—you let Jesus take the wheel?" Snowman couldn’t help laughing.  "Ten-four."

"I'm not going down there. I hear zombies down there."

I have one at fault accident on my record. It was a rear-end collision and it is a 2 pt. accident in California. I was shopping for new insurance. I made this statement about the at fault accident when filling out the forms for a quote online. At first GEICO the GEICO rates were looking way better than Progressive or other insurance companies so I thought I'd go with them. But when I went to go pay online, they did one last DMV record check, and came back with a higher rate. Even though I had stated the accident in the form previously. They waited to verify this at the very end and not earlier which I found annoying--they had my driver's licence earlier in the application process, so why wait till the very end! When filling out the Progressive quote forms, I also stated the info about my accident where asked. At the end, the form still considered me a Good Driver and the quote was much cheaper than Progressive. I went to pay and it did not recalculate my quote after a DMV check like GEICO did. I paid and am wondering if I am going to hear back from them saying I need to pay more. But I gave them all the info and I do now have a policy. So it appears that GEICO is tougher when it comes to having an accident, and Progressive doesn't let one at fault accident ruin a good driver discount? Does anyone have experience with this?""

I've just passed my driving test and was looking to get insured on my mums 1.6l Audi 80. So I went onto some comparison web sites and put my mum as main driver and me as the named driver and I was getting quotes of around 1900 (Fully comp). So I thought I would see what it would cost if my mum got the likes of a corsa or a fiesta or something. I changed the car details on the website and the quotes came out at 3000 + (Fully comp). I just don't understand how an Audi can be considerably cheaper than a corsa's and fiestas etc. Any explaination on why this is would be much appreciated. Why do I have to pay extra for changing address with my insurance company?

I recently moved and changed the details on my drivers licence and log book. When I called the insurance company to do the same they said i would need to pay 60 to cover the cost of the change between now and the renewal period (which at the time was approx 6 weeks away). All of this was AFTER they took my previous and new address to confirm my ID. When I asked them why this was as I had paid my entire premium in full last year (so as not to incur direct debit charges) they just repeated themselves. I did not have the 60 and said well I will just stay at the previous address (my ex-boyfriends) until my renewal comes through and I will change address then. However...my renewal has just come through in my NEW address but with postcode where vehicle kept overnight as my OLD address!! What does this actually mean?? surely if I have to make a claim it doesn't matter where the vehicle is kept esp as they have my address and the majority of claims do not happen at your residence!!! I have read the policy back to front and they even added amendments this year to include admin charges and NOWHERE does it mention being charged for change of address. I have literally moved around the corner surely its not just about postcodes or am I being naive??

I was stopped at a red light behind two cars. Both cars started to go and so did I the next thing I knew I had hit the car in front of me. The car in front of me hit the car in front of him. We all pulled over my car isnt to bad but I drive a suburban, the car in front of me was a smaller car so his looked a little worse. Nobody was hurt, and all cars were drivable, so we decided to not call the police we just all exchanged information. After we had finished and they left I immediately called my insurance lady to let her know what happened. I am not super clear on this next part, we have been going back and forth with our insurance since that call and will continue to fight it. When I called the insurance lady she said I wasnt covered. She said that they had received the last payment much later than it was due (not sure how because it was mailed the same time as always) but because of that our insurance had been cancelled. A couple of weeks ago they had chased our check, she said we were reinstated as of yesterday (the day of the accident) but because it was the same day they werent liable to pay the damages. We are going to keep fighting them because I dont think its fair. Even if they decide that they wont pay we can afford to just pay for the damages to the rear end of the car in front of us, because know matter what happened I am at fault for following to close. We cant afford to pay out of our pocket also for his front end and the rear end of the first car. It's been 10 years since the Rangers beat the Orioles 30-3, and it's still brutal

It’s the 10th anniversary of one of baseball’s most ridiculous games.

Ten years ago, Baltimore Orioles fans stood up and applauded Ramon Vazquez, who was a utility infielder for the Texas Rangers. They screamed for him. Some of them bowed in mock fealty, Wayne’s World-style. He had hit his second home run of the day, and Orioles fans couldn’t get enough. They laughed and cheered and laughed.

The home run was Vazquez’s seventh of the year, a career high by far. It was the first and only time he would hit two home runs in one game, but he didn’t respond to the cheers of the Orioles fans. He looked straight ahead, without cracking a smile.

His teammates looked down, too, avoiding eye contact.

They didn’t know what to do. No one did. That home run put the Rangers up 30-3, an American League record, a score that was topped only by a Colts/Colonels game from 1897, when baseballs were made out of leather swatches wrapped around shrunken raccoon skulls. The Orioles fans who stayed around went from eager to disappointed to angry to indifferent to humbled, awed, and appreciative. They stuck around and were rewarded. They gave the love back.

Everyone who was in a uniform, though, just wanted to go home. That was enough baseball for the day, and if a vote were held to end the baseball, it would have been unanimous. Everyone wanted to stop the baseball.

But they couldn’t. It was the first game of a doubleheader, after all.

This is a story about the Rangers beating the Orioles, 30-3. If we’re going to talk about a 30-3 game, we’ll need to know how it happened. Lots of hits, you might guess. Lots of home runs. Lots of bad pitching. Lots of bad defense. Lots of bad luck.

Well, fine, that’s exactly what happened. Way to ruin the surprise. But you’re already here, so let’s explore it in greater detail.

Start with the hits. The Rangers had 29 of them, which was the fourth-most by any team since 1913*.

The hits came in rapid succession, some of them scalded, some of them barely touched. They went to left, center, and right, and they dribbled in front of the catcher. Some of them were hit two feet, and some of them were hit 430 feet. But there were a lot of them. Consider that it’s somewhat rare for the Rangers to get 14 hits or more in a game — it’s a feat they accomplish in about five percent of their games. They had more than twice as many in this game, shoehorning roughly 27 innings of offensive dominance into nine innings.

Or about two, to be technical. The distribution of hits:

9th - 4

It’s hard to overstate just how average this game was before the top of the sixth inning. There were five innings of completely unremarkable baseball, a dumb inning, a normal inning, a dumb inning, and another dumb inning. The unremarkable innings outnumbered the dumb innings by a 2-to-1 margin.

Move to the home runs, of which there were six. Vazquez hit his two, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia also hit two. Both Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf hit grand slams, two innings apart. Both the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets finished the 2007 season without a grand slam.

The wind was not blowing out. The balls didn’t just scrape off the top of the fence. Each one of them was crushed. Each one of them deserved to be crushed.

This leads us to the bad pitching, of which there was plenty. Daniel Cabrera started the game, and he was an anthropomorphic walk, perhaps the most Orioles pitcher of the last 20 years. After walking nearly six batters for every nine innings he pitched in Low-A, the Orioles called him up after five starts in Double-A the following season. They had spent the previous decade not developing pitchers, so you can understand their confidence.

He was followed by Brian Burres, Rob Bell, and Paul Shuey. Burres was a low-strikeout lefty they claimed off waivers the year before. Bell was a perennial breakout candidate, and there’s still that one guy in your fantasy league that wants to call his name today. Shuey was the one Orioles pitcher who had a long, productive career. Except he had retired four years earlier because of hip problems, and he was pitching in the penultimate game of his career.

None of them had command. None of them had control. All of them allowed at least one home run and a walk. Cabrera was the best of the bunch, allowing just six earned runs. Shuey allowed nine runs over two innings, and his Win Probability Added was a cool 0.000. There are benefits to coming into a 21-3 game, after all.

It’s not like they were helped by their defense, though. The first hit of the game fell right in front of Corey Patterson. Miguel Tejada couldn’t snare a ball in the fourth that might have been a double play, but instead kept the rally going. Melvin Mora had a rough game, with an error and several iffy plays that most third basemen would have made. This was a ball that was hit to Mora at third base:

Because HD television was apparently invented the day after this game, it’s hard to see the ball, but the gag is that it was hit to third base, and it’s about 10 feet above the shortstop in that picture. It was that kind of defensive night for the Orioles. As you might have guessed.

But there was also rotten luck. That’s the fifth leg of this carrion table. The fifth hit of the game would have been an out with instant replay.

That blown call was followed by a two-run single and three-run homer. In the hellish sixth inning, this could have ended it all:

While this could also be filed in the defense-was-bad cabinet up there, it’s also a perfect example of the kinds of hits the Rangers were getting. Five of the 29 hits were infield hits. Another six were grounders with eyes. This particular one-out infield hit was followed by a single, homer, strikeout, single, single, single, single, single, single.

When the score was 6-3, play-by-play announcer Jim Hunter said, “Texas having one of those days where they're getting bloop hits, they're getting blasts, they're getting infield hits.”

The Orioles deserved to lose. They deserved to lose by a lot. But they didn’t deserve to lose 30-3. That’s because no team has ever deserved to lose 30-3.

* The team at the top of the hits leaderboard is the 1932 Philadelphia Athletics, but they shouldn’t count because their game lasted 18 innings. The winning pitcher was a reliever who allowed 29 hits and 14 runs.

In an earlier draft of this, I saved the revelation that this was the first game of a doubleheader for the end, a Shyamalanian twist to make you realize how everything was exponentially worse than it already was.

It was a twi-night doubleheader, too. This 30-3 game started at 5:05 p.m. local time and ended at 8:26. After a 35 minute break to prep the field, it was time for more baseball. It’s so beautiful, it absolutely breaks my heart.

Except there’s no saving that for the reveal because that’s why this game was the way it was. The plan was almost certainly to pitch Brian Burres for several innings. He was a starter in the minors, and he hadn’t pitched in nine days. The game was 6-3 when he entered it, and after Marlon Byrd hit a grand slam to make it 10-3, there was no reason to let anybody else pitch for a while. Save the arms for the second game. I’d wager there was a non-zero chance that the plan was to let Burres pitch the final four innings, regardless of how bad things got.

Until things got much worse than anyone could have anticipated. Then Orioles manager Dave Trembley needed Bell to take up that role, and lucky for them, he was also a starter in the minors. This seems like a good time to mention that earlier in the day, Trembley was named the manager of the Baltimore Orioles. He was the interim manager after Sam Perlozzo was fired, and now he had the full-time gig. At the press conference, he said “I don't play golf, I don't network, I don't go to cocktail parties. I think about baseball.” And I believe him.

Trembley was going to use the fewest number of pitchers possible, dammit, even if it meant he was going to lose, 30-3. I respect that. Everything that happened took place because of the specter of a doubleheader.

Also, none of the players on the roster went on to pitch an inning in a blowout in their careers. I checked. So it’s possible that there weren’t any candidates. Possible. I still would have pitched Corey Patterson, just because.

It was painfully obvious that neither Bell nor Shuey had a lot of gas left toward the end of their outings. The last pitch Shuey threw in the top of the ninth inning was a meatball that was hit about 360 feet for an out. It was hit high enough for the cameras to use this shot:

The crowd gasp-cheered. They wanted more, I think. Instead, it was the end of the scoring, and Paul Shuey could rest, bless him. It was all over.

It was all over.

The Orioles lost the second game. At 11:46 p.m., almost seven hours after the first game started, Jim Hoey blew a one-run lead in the eighth inning.

Imagine being the Orioles fan who watched every pitch. Imagine feeling whatever he or she felt. I’m not sure if you yell at Hoey or thank him for making sure the universe was aligned properly.

These are feelings that will bubble forth when the Orioles win their next World Series. You’ll forgive those fans for tipping at least one car over.

INTERMISSION

Okay, so this was just 10 years ago, right? That doesn’t sound that long ago. I was an adult back then. I had bills. I’m an adult with bills now. It’s basically the same thing.

But 10 years is apparently an eternity in style-time. Because, goodness, did the baseball players look different back then. Check out what’s poking out of Brian Roberts’ hat here:

Kevin Millar had the same thing going, but sweatier. Everything was just that much different.

The facial hair is where the decade of difference really stood out, though. For three minutes, I thought Jason Botts had a really strange and pronounced cleft chin.

But when the crime lab enhanced the image, it turns out it was facial hair.

It wasn’t just Botts! I would like to present a selection of goatees and soul patches:

Apparently in 2007, there was a Great Facial Hair Drought, which led to harsh rationing. Each able-bodied man was allotted six or seven hairs to distribute however they saw fit. And now we’re living in an overcorrection, in which Charlie Blackmon’s upper lip is 700 times hairier than every member of the 2007 Orioles and Rangers combined.

The telecast I watched was the Orioles telecast, and it was my first choice. I knew what the Rangers telecast would be like. Wonder stacked upon wonder. Announcers figuring out new ways to express their disbelief at what they were watching. And that all sounds like a lot of fun for Rangers fans.

For the rest of us, though, give me the pathos of watching the deconstruction of a team in the first game of a doubleheader, with the announcers trying to put whatever spin on it they could. This was a game in the Orioles’ house, and it’s not like excitement was rippling through the crowd from the first pitch.

When the score was 21-3, Jim Palmer was asked if he had ever seen a game like this. He answered no, and it mostly checks out. The Orioles didn’t score 20 runs in a game while he was active. They allowed more than 20 just once. So the announcers had to process this all with the rest of us. And for the first innings after the blowout was in effect, they wanted to crawl under a rock with the rest of the fans at home.

Five seconds before Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s second homer of the night, Palmer said, "This would be a good night for an iPod." There were still so many runs to come. And I really wish I knew what Palmer’s iPod was loaded up with in the event of a blowout loss.

It was when Vazquez hit his second homer that you could hear the life of the announcers again. It’s when the crowd got wild and appreciative again. It was the number 30 that made it clear that this was a game to be enjoyed on both sides. Wear it. Love it. Embrace it. Two batters before this home run, Rangers third-base coach Don Wakamatsu held a runner at third on a single, even though he probably would have scored. It was a great moment in polite baseball history. It ended with a 30-3 final, but still.

Vazquez hit the home run, the scoreboard rolled over to 30, and everyone giggled for a few hours. For me, though, the best part of the night was the subtle camera work after the home run.

Indeed. If there’s a lesson to be learned, the camera operator wanted to share it with you. Watch out for batted balls. They’ll absolutely kill you and everyone you’ve ever loved. And they’ll occasionally keep falling and falling and falling until the score is 30-3. It won’t happen again for 100 years. So let’s appreciate this game now, a decade after it graced us with our presence.

After battling Ramon Hernandez for 10 pitches to start the bottom of the ninth inning, Wes Littleton got the strikeout on a nasty slider. He then dispatched Jay Payton and Brian Roberts on five pitches. The game was over, the Rangers had won 30-3, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia came out to the mound with the rest of the team to congratulate his pitcher.

It was Littleton’s first save of the year, after all.

At this point I regret making a claim and wish i could turn back the clock. I am being forced into a box and it looks shady. Three weeks ago my 2005 Cadillac STS was involved in a parking lot flood where the water rose and filled the floors of my car by about 4 inches. All us neighbors had cleaning parties using a wet vac and baking and toweling are cars in the sun over the next few days letting our vehicles dry out. On my car everything works like a dream as it did before with the exception of a 'check stability control' notice that comes on when I start the car. I have been driving the car fine since the flood and decided maybe I should make a claim to fix this error that pops up on the dash when i start the car. From the time I dropped it off at the dealer it has been all negative. Right away the dealer was negative and telling me it's the end of the world with my car, everything is ruined and it will probably be a total loss. He got the adjuster for my insurance company out there and it looks like it will be put in to the total loss category. No i am just asking the insurance company to forget everything and drop the claim because the damage is not that extreme and i dont want to lose my car. I am told at this point it is too late. Is that true? My neighbors are floored by this, i have been driving it around for a few weeks just fine and the car still looks new With only 62000 miles on it. I can't help from thinking that something suspicious is going on here. Do they stand to make a nice profit by totalling my vehicle and then replacing one module for a 1000 or so and having a perfect car with all systems working? I'm looking for advice...and hopefully someone to tell me that I'm not screwed. My boss graciously offered to find group insurance for all of her employees and she is willing to pay 50% of the premiums. The problem is that she went with the most expensive plan on the market (that I've seen) and I simply can't afford it. The premium is $340 a month, so I'd be paying $170 which isn't bad...but the copays are at least +20% on everything and doctor visits range from $35 to $55 a visit, so I wouldn't be able to afford to use my health coverage often. It also doesn't include dental, which is what I really wanted/needed. I am 21 years old (and all of my coworkers are in their 20s), so I don't really understand why the payments are so high. I'm right in the midst of paying off student loans, I don't get paid very much, and I was hoping to start saving money to purchase a car and be able to go back to school. I was going to use my income tax return as a down payment on a car, but if I opt out of healthcare this year at least a fourth of that return will be taken as the fine imposed to coerce people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. My dream car has always been a Camaro. Recently me and my dad have been looking for project cars to fix up and stuff. Hi there. I have a question. I want to SUE my Car insurance company because they refuse to pay for my stolen car which is been more then 6 months and still hasn't been recovered. I was paying full coverage for about 4 months till the moment my Range Rover 1998 was stolen. After filing proper claims i get a letter from my insurance that they denied the claim. The reason why was because i misrepresented myself. and what they meant by that was that when i signed the contract i selected NO in a question ( Has your license ever been suspended or revoked) Now let me explain how this happened. I got the insurance thru my broker. Everything was done by phone. My broker happened to be family of dear friend of mine. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front. Now if i go on small claim max i can go is $3000.00 ????
