Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 33: The Hikari Of Dawn (Review)
Thoughts on the thirty-third episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
I thought this was a pretty decent episode. Definitely not as good as last week’s, but better than the previous Taichi-centric episodes.
The episode opened well with the Vademon being creepy and cult-like. I prefer this method of informing the audience, versus Koushirou just spouting exposition out of nowhere.
Oh, I spoke too soon. Here Koushirou is again going off about his forever-in-the-background ISS plotline . . . XD;
LMAO at Jou and the conveniently placed Gomamon. XD; Gomomon: “They [the digimon] must really like you, Jou.” Jou: “What do they like?!” WE HAVE NO IDEA, JOU, YOU TELL US. I really liked Jou in his introduction episode, but ever since then, he’s grown into the most unlikeable cast member in the Adventure franchise . . .
The small snippets with the “other” kids are much too brief and really add nothing to the plot. This series really needs to get all the kids back together ASAP and let magic happen between them. I’m so tired of The Taichi Show feat. Bits of a Few Others.
LMAO Hikari did it again! Taichi: “Hikari!” Hikari: *Turns to look at him.* Taichi: “Hikari! I’m coming to save you right now!” Hikari: *Turns . . . away.* XD; Man, this girl. It makes me laugh too much for me to hate her for it, though, lol.
Hikari has never been more creepy and evil-looking than when her eyes are glinting blue while covered in that blue energy/power. XD;
The whole Millenniumon resurrection plot is cool and interesting. But it diminishes SkullKnightmon’s role in the series (where he has lasted “this long” over the other villains, and super evolves to DarkKnightmon). His whole purpose was to be a tool for Tailmon to play hide-and-seek in, so she and Hikari could be sacrificed to resurrect Millenniumon? OK, cool, I guess. It does feel very random, too. :P
How fucking creepy was Hikari when she was disappearing into the black hole/vortex? XD; What did she mouth to Taichi as she sunk back into the hole? “Bye, Bitch.”? XD;
Sora and Garudamon destroy SkullKnightmon’s “horse”, lol. That’s their level of epicness. Forever side-lined. :P
The whole sequence of Hikari finding Tailmon inside DarkKnightmon was cool . . . but super weird? Just the idea of it. Why was Tailmon locked inside of some random digimon? Because they were both “chosen” by Millenniumon to be sacrificed for his resurrection? That’s it. And it just seems so random. Could the writers not come up with something better? :P
Ghost!Tailmon looks creepy. Thus she makes the perfect partner for our creepy li’l Hikari-chan! :D
Oh look, the super uncommon, tiring, miraculous Mega evolution of WarGreymon is happening . . . again. :P Toei really should’ve just stuck to alternating the Mega evolutions for the kids here (a la their rushed Ultimate evolutions), instead of giving us WarGreymon three times within four episodes . . . it’s just so stale. Give me the other children and their Megas!
Hikari: “I’m sorry, but I believed in you [Taichi]. I knew you would definitely come!” That doesn’t excuse you just flat out ignoring him and turning your nose up at him though, lmao. Oh, Hikari. (I get it, though. I’m completely fine with her excuse. But I still think it’s hella funny. XD;)
The Vademon chanting reminds me of the aliens from Toy Story. XD;
Welcome to the team, Tailmon! Now can we please move the plot along and reunite all the kids already?! I have 33 episodes left of this show and I demand to see Yamato for all 33 remaining episodes. XD; Seriously, though, I really need all the kids together for as many episodes as possible. Please?
Taichi got a little bit more personality this episode, I guess, so that’s a plus. I guess. I still think he’s rather dull and generic. And the Yagami reunion paled so hard in comparison to the Takaishida reunion - I think because the latter siblings actually do have more interesting personalities than the former siblings . . .
So we are officially half-way through the entire series (if it really does have 66 episodes in total)! Wow. That’s scary. Yeah, I really don’t think this series can pick up in the last half of its run and become better than the OG - it’s just too late. XD;
But it can still become better than its own first half! It can! Please, Toei! REUNITE THE KIDS AND MAKE IT HAPPEN. :D

Digimon Adventure: (2020) Final Thoughts
Considering I stopped reviewing this series episode by episode months ago, they’re more positive thoughts than you’d expect, though still not all that positive.
To summarize, this is an entertaining series with plenty of individual good aspects and great episodes that nevertheless leaves me cold as a whole. Much as I enjoyed following it week to week, I can’t say I recommend this series to anyone but hardcore Digimon fans, or hardcore fans of the wider “monster” genre.
Action
It felt appropriate to start with this, considering a focus on action was what the initial interviews promised, and they delivered in spades. It wasn’t perfect or too consistent, there were several times when the Digimon not evolving when they could just broke any tension the fights had, but this series had some of the best fights in any Digimon anime. Anything in the first 3 episodes, Greymon/MetalGreymon vs MetalTyranomon, SkullKnightmon vs Greymon and Garurumon, Mugendramon vs DoneDevimon, Mugendramon vs WarGreymon, Millenniumon vs the dragons, Omegamon vs Abbadomon Core… all of them among the best things the franchise has to offer in terms of action scenes, which after so many series where fights were solved by having a protagonist Digimon evolve and one-shotting the enemy, comes as a breath of fresh air (to be fair, this series also had a lot of that, but it had actual great fights to compensate).
Worldbuilding
Another thing promised in interviews was the use of Digimon from all over the franchise, and not only did they deliver, but they also included plenty of references to the “null canon” to enrich the experience for the most hardcore fans. The series made sure to constantly emphasize the savage nature of the Digital World, bringing back the Tamers worldbuilding of Digimon consuming weaker Digimon in hopes of achieving evolution. Along the way we saw a lot of allies fighting back against this status-quo, from things as overt as Leomon organizing a resistance or Petaldramon protecting weaker Digimon from the all-consuming Entmon, to less dramatic stuff like weak Digimon settling down to live together, or the mere presence of a restaurant where everyone can rest for a while of the hardships of their world.
The biggest flaw here was in how the series handled its antagonists. With very few exceptions, every single enemy Digimon in the series lacked dialog, whereas nearly every single ally Digimon could speak normally, and this disparity cheapened the whole thing, because instead of coming across as “this mentality is normal for this world”, it came across as just your normal “everyone lived together in harmony until the villains attacked”, which is very much not what the series was telling us.
Characterization
That brings us to the next point: the lack of personality for most villains. I joked elsewhere that Minotaurmon from episode 19 was the most compelling villain of the series, and that’s not completely a joke. Almost every single villain of the week was flat, plenty of the “main” villains were lacking in dialog (Algomon in the first few episodes, Nidhoggmon, Millenniumon) or turned mindless halfway through (Devimon, DarkKnightmon). Negamon/Abbadomon in the final episodes managed to benefit from this by being the embodiment of an “instinct”, but in general this meant a mook-of-the-week like Minotaurmon managed to be a highlight among the villains simply by having dialog and non-trivial desires.
But what of the protagonists? The popular opinion is that everyone is far blander than they were in the original series, and I agree. But rather than comparing it with the first series, let’s look at what it had to offer to us. Where in other Digimon series, the backstories and issues of the protagonists and their reactions to what’s going on around them make for most of the drama, in this series the drama comes from the villains trying to destroy everything, and for the most part that means the protagonists only need to be distinct and charming on their own, no necessity to create conflict between them. There is an overall character arc for all of them, though: accepting and interiorizing their new duties towards the world they had ended up stranded on, getting to know and love the Digital World. Was this well done? Not really.
Taichi and Takeru, for example, were so much the embodiment of the stock shonen hero that accepting their place in this new world didn’t really reveal anything about them we hadn’t already seen from their first few appearances.
Jou got stuck as an unfunny punchline 90% of the time, to the point of damaging his few “serious” moments in some of his focus episodes. His development of becoming assertive was compelling in theory, but it got muddled with so many unfunny and uncomfortable hotsprings jokes that the impact was lost.
Hikari started as an even more blatant plot-device “mysterious character” than she was in the original series, before unconvincingly changing to cheerful little girl afterwards (the whiplash between her in episode 33 and her in episode 34 was something else), and only really managing to settle into a compelling character in her last focus episode (58, defending the Digitamas from the Bakemon and SkullBaluchimon, which to be fair is a great episode and probably the best showcase for Hikari as a character in any product or continuity).
Koushiro was mostly fine, although we all remember the several times the series seemed to promise it might do something with him (his uneasiness when his family was mentioned, or that line about having to “face the darkness of his past” in the HerakleKabuterimon episode) that ended up being nothing.
Mimi is the fan-favorite, being charming in nearly all her appearances and having some of the best focus episodes, and it’s mostly deserved. If there’s anything I criticize from her, it’s that her focus episodes don’t really add up to anything.
Yamato was fine, started out as a stock shonen rival before becoming the single most chill “lone wolf” in any Digimon series, probably because of what I said before of the conflict between the protagonists no longer being the source of drama. He gets a slow development of caring only for his brother to starting to care for other Digimon for the sake of Sora and Gabumon to caring about the Digital World just as much as everyone else.
Sora was made fun of by a certain section of the fandom for having the worst focus episodes early on, and I agreed, but having finished the series I can’t get rid of the impression that her focus episodes, while perhaps not that good on their own, when taken as a whole explore her character the best of any other. Yeah, this mostly means exploring her compassion (these are not very multi-dimensional characters), but they deepen and deepen both her impact on the Digimon she saves and how she is impacted in turn by them, moving her away from saving others through her combat prowess to saving others by empathizing with the grief of another caring soul, and by the end I honestly ended up considering her my favorite character (despite none of her episodes making it to my list of favorites).
As for the Digimon… it’s following in the footsteps of other Digimon Adventure products by not really having much of interest for the Digimon themselves except for Tailmon.
Overall, for the most part the main characters were decent, but besides Mimi and ultimately also Sora, I don’t think they’re very memorable. All of them start out promising, but never really improved from that promising start (again, except for Sora).
Pacing
And now we get to the biggest problem of the series: Pacing. I’ve seen it stated elsewhere that this series was more episodic than most (any?) other Digimon series before it, and part of the backlash it got was from not being as serialized as fans expected it to be. This isn’t exactly true. From episode 16 (Eyesmon) to episode 24 (DoneDevimon), this series was as serialized as any other Digimon series has ever been, with nonstop escalation that demanded you keep watching it week after week. Then, from 25 to 35 (Angewomon) or 36 (BlitzGreymon), it pulled slightly back from that never-ending escalation, but was still pretty serialized. It was only afterwards that it became heavily episodic, and by that point it wasn’t expectations set up by previous series that hurt it in the eyes of the fandom, it was expectations set by this series itself in its first half.
Not that the episodes themselves were bad. Honestly, I found myself significantly more entertained by the episodic later half of the series than the serialized first half. Maybe it was because they didn’t feel the need to convince me they were the most exciting, tense thing I had ever seen when they were clearly not (hello, Mamemon episode), or maybe it was that there were more than just endless fights to them, but I normally ended up those episodes entertained and satisfied, whereas with a lot of episodes from Eyesmon to BlitzGreymon, I mostly just felt frustrated after watching them. I agree with the criticism that, when seen as a whole, breaking momentum so hard for so long after months of never-ending escalation wasn’t the right choice, but when seen week after week, I can’t see this change of approach as that bad of a thing.
Conclusion
I think that sums up the series for me. On a weekly basis, it’s pretty entertaining. It’s when seen as a whole that the problems really become clear. There’s been some speculation in the past few weeks of how much the current situation in the world might have impacted the series, but ultimately, I have to judge what actually happened, and I can’t help the impression that this series ultimately left me with nothing of substance after it was all said and done. Like, I enjoyed this more than, say, Appli Monsters, but Appli Monsters have things that stick with you after it’s over. Not so much here, unless you’re a hardcore fan that loves the Omegamon lore this added (which I am, btw; love that Omegamon lore). I don’t think I can recommend this series to anyone who isn’t a hardcore Digimon fan, or at least a hardcore fan of the wider “monster” genre.
One thing I’m grateful to this series for, though, it’s the commercial boost it has given the rest of the franchise. I’m not going to credit it for all the successes it currently has, after all the Card Game would have fell off by now if it wasn’t genuinely well-done and the Vital Bracelet happened because of years of the virtual pet division progressively building up its audience after it had nearly died off, but it’s undeniable they wouldn’t have sold as well without this anime advertising the franchise week after week. Next week, we’ll have the first episode of Digimon Ghost Game, the first time since 2001 that we have a Digimon series being immediately succeeded by another. If that isn’t a sign of how well the franchise is doing right now, I don’t know what is.
Favorite Episodes: 1 (Tokyo Digital Crisis), 6 (The Targeted Kingdom), 12 (Lilimon Blooms), 20 (The Seventh One Awakens), 32 (Soaring Hope), 42 (King of Inventors, Gerbemon), 49 (The God of Evil Descends, Millenniummon), 56 (The Gold Wolf of the Crescent Moon), 58 (Hikari, New Life)

Digimon Adventures + Digimon Adventure: [2020 Reboot] + Digimon Adventure tri. + Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna ~ (AUTISTIC HEADCANON!) KOUSHIRO IZUMI Character Analysis (Japanese version) + DISPLAYING COMMON NEURODIVERGENT TRAITS (IN GENERAL) {see Part 1 of Autistic!/Neurodivergent!Koushiro canonical traits here}
+ despite Koushiro’s own (initial) beliefs about Koushiro’s deep TECHNOLOGY interest, eventually realizing he’s GENUINELY ENJOYING a SPECIAL INTEREST in COMPUTERS, TECHNOLOGY, (& KNOWLEDGE in General)
+ bonus receiving positive Stimulation from said Special interests (above gifs) from the Digimon Adventure movies
READ FURTHER: What is a Special Interest?:
Special interests are (not named) literally a part of the diagnostic criteria for Autism. From the DSM-V directly: Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus Note: abnormal in intensity or focus that means that if “everyone” has special interests, they aren’t ‘abnormal’ in intensity or focus, because that’s everyone. In the examples, directly from the DSM-V, specifically referring to interests: excessively circumscribed or perseverative interests (circumscribed=restricted perseverative=repeat insistently/redundantly) The below is a section from the Adventures novels, (bolding/italics by me for emphasis):
Koushiro stood facing his parents in a corner of Big Sight’s empty main lobby. “What did you want to talk to me about?” His father, Masami, spoke heavily. “While we were hiding at home, your mother and I had a talk and we decided to tell you the truth. The thing is—” He knew that this day would one day come. “We’re not your real parents.” “…I already know.” His mother, Yoshie, wasn’t surprised at all. “I knew it…” Just before they had moved to Odaiba, Koushiro had woken up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. His parents’ voices could be heard through the thin crack of the open door. “I decided to pretend that I hadn’t heard it. I tried to act as if everything was the same as before… but I just couldn’t do it. The more I tried, the weirder it felt… Until in the end, I became obsessed with computers… So that I could escape from reality…” “It’s okay to be obsessed with computers!” Koushiro looked up wonderingly at Masami’s sharp voice. “Is there something wrong about that? No! It’s what makes you unique.”
- Digimon Adventure Novel (written by Adventures head writer/director, Hiroyuki Kakudou) [with translation credit thanks to onkei kun of website Digital Scratch!] (*Note: while the novel is a highly condensed form of the original TV series, it contained many ideas Kakudou said/claimed he could not include in the final version; he then used the novels to elaborate on those ideas in an alternative form of media/enjoyment for the series.)
“IT’S OKAY TO BE OBSESSED WITH COMPUTERS!” - Masami Izumi, Koushiro’s father (Novels edition) of Adventure ep 38
“IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT? NO ! IT’S WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE.”
“YOU DON’T NEED TO CHANGE YOURSELF FOR US.”
“ALL WE WANT IS FOR YOU TO BE HAPPY.”
BONUS: (from episode 33 of 02 in which Miyako goes to Kyoto), Koushiro speaking in response to Ken Ichijouji, after they have a conversation about the possible reason, and Koushiro’s theory, of why Ken’s D3 initially transformed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“...Because I WANTED TO KNOW.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please, if you will, compare all of the above to:
Tumblr media
“ IS IT WRONG TO WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ? ’ {a very common theme & phrasing used within Koushiro’s wider storyline across the series & novel)
+
Tumblr media
(In the original Japanese version of Adventure episode 24, Koushiro’s Crest episode; he does not lose simply his “Curiosity” {a noncanonical-to-the-Japanese version US dub change}, he actually loses his ENTIRE {‘INQUISITIVE’ HEART}.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“WANTING TO KNOW EVERYTHING IS A PART OF WHO I AM!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(*Maybe of note: Here, he’s saying “Gomen yo” {I’m sorry} instead of the more formal “Gomen nasai” {Koushiro in the original Japanese version is known for his overly-formal way of speaking, typically involving him being/sounding extremely polite, especially when speaking to his adoptive parents. but also even with his friends. ‘Gomen yo’ sounds a little more casual in comparison, imo. He has more significant developments in this area of speech later on, but either way you can tell his intention here is genuine.})
Tumblr media
BONUS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“THAT’S THE {KOUSHIRO-HAN} I KNOW!”
{*NOTES: THIS IS A FAN META POST. This is also my particular headcanon / analysis of Koushiro Please keep this in mind before you comment.}
gifs by @izzyizumi , { DO NOT REPOST } { DO NOT REMOVE CAPTION } { DO NOT USE MY POSTS FOR ARGUING/DISCOURSE } { DO NOT USE MY POSTS FOR SPREADING CANON HATE } { OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE BLOCKED } { THIS ALSO APPLIES TO TAGGING/TAGS ON THIS POST. }
{usage of gifs may be allowed if permission is asked / or if credit is given. However, read my about & FAQ pages first. Please do NOT use / ask if you match anything in my “Do Not Interact” sections.}

[ NOTES: This post was made with the intention of pointing out CANONICAL character traits of Koushiro in the various media. There is a bit further commentary in the tags of the original post in regards to headcanons. If you choose to read this commentary, please be respectful. Please be aware I am making this post and speaking as someone who is Neuro divergent MYSELF. ]
( FINAL NOTE: This and this are also very good posts. }

Brief thoughts on every Digimon Adventure 2020 episode
It’s been a while since I wrote a review for Adventure 2020, for lack of time or enthusiasm, so here I’ll go through every episode saying “I like it”, “I don’t like it” or “I’m ambivalent”, along with other brief thoughts.
Breaking it down in short “arcs”, my opinions are as follows:
Character Introductions (1-8): Liked 6, didn’t like 1, was ambivalent about 1.
Perfect evolutions and Nidhoggmon (9-18): Liked 6, didn’t like 3, was ambivalent about 1.
Takeru and Devimon (19-24): Liked 1, didn’t like 1, was ambivalent about 4.
Hikari and DarkKnightmon (25-33): Liked 1, didn’t like 5, was ambivalent about 3.
MoonMillenniummon arc? (34-36 as of now): Didn’t like 1 and was ambivalent about 2.
Overall: I liked 14 episodes, didn’t like 11 episodes and was ambivalent about 11 episodes. The vast, vast majority of the episodes I liked were before the second Omegamon appearence.
Pretty long list below the cut
Tokyo Digital Crisis: I like it. Established Taichi and Koushiro very well, had great fights and ended on a good cliffhanger.
War Game: I like it. Not as much as the first, but the fights were pretty good.
And to the Digital World: I like it. First half was just a remake of Our War Game, but second half was a great showcase of Taichi and Koushiro.
Birdramon Soars: I don’t like it. Sora’s lack of reaction is ridiculous, and the action is terrible.
Holy Digimon: I’m ambivalent. Backstory dump was okay, bond between Koushiro and Tentomon was good, the offscreen escape was ridiculous.
The Targeted Kingdom: I like it. Excelent introduction for Mimi, her personality, background and conflicts, characterization for the rest was great, the situation with the protection against the siege was handled great.
That Boy is Jou Kido: I like it. Not quite as good as Mimi’s episode, but good for basically the same reasons.
The Children’s Attack on the Fortress: I like it. It’s the start of the whole “barrage of attacks that hits nothing” trope for the show, but it’s fun, Yamato’s epiphany was surprisingly well handled.
The Perfect Attacks: I like it. It’s the start of “non-protagonists stand around and do nothing” for this show, but the whole deal with Ogremon and Greymon was great enough for me to not mind it.
The Super Evolution of Steel: I like it. I interpreted it as the synchronicity between Taichi and Agumon being the catalyst for the evolution, and that’s unique enough for the franchise that I enjoyed it. Still had tons of problems though.
The Wolf Standing atop the Desert: I don’t like it. It had Yamato go through the most annoying tropes usually associated with the lone wolf archetype, and the evolution cathalyst was remembering the far more impactful episode 8.
Lilimon Blooms: I like it. As others pointed out, it’s an episode long reference to Castle in the Sky, but I actually liked it better than that movie.
The Crimson Winged Garudamon: I don’t like it. Sora was upstaged by Yamato on her own episode, and Jou was just there to be humiliated.
The Kings of the Insects Clash: I’m ambivalent. There’s enough good stuff here to love it and enough bad stuff to hate it. Pity the lessons Koushiro learned here basically stayed here too.
Zudomon’s Iron Hammer of Lightning: I like it. Jou’s determination to not go back on his word and protect his friends by himself was great, as were his initial attempts at strategy both working and failing because of his lack of experience.
The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo: I like it. Liked the paranoia this evoked.
The Battle in Tokyo Against Orochimon: I like it. It’s the summation of everything that happened before in terms of every single character.
Countdown to Tokyo’s Annihilation: I don’t like it. It was terrible in terms of plot, character and action.
Roar, Juouken: I’m ambivalent. Tons of good stuff here, and all of it relies on incompetent villains and heroes forgetting their power-ups.
The Seventh One Awakens: I like it. Nay, I love it. Best episode in the series, maybe, the culmination of Yamato’s character up to that moment and the first appearence of the Holy Digimon justifying all the hype for them.
The Tide-turning Update: I’m ambivalent. Agumon and Taichi were good, as was the action, but Yamato doing a 180 on his attitude towards Takeru, and Takeru’s extremely convenient rescue of Eldoradimon, dragged this down.
The Unbeatable Blue Sagittarius: I’m ambivalent. Tons of good stuff, but the emotional core of it was Takeru, and he plain didn’t work here.
Meesenger of Darkness, Devimon: I don’t like it. Lame fight scene extended to full episode length.
The Final Stage, Done Devimon: I’m ambivalent. Flashy, but ultimately meaningless.
Dive to the Next Ocean: I don’t like it. Terrible in almost every regard, with the brief scenes of the B-Team being the highlights.
Break Through the Sea Monster Barricade: I don’t like it. The first scene was good and then it spends the episode reiterating its message.
To the New Continent: I don’t like it. Still repeating the same worldbuilding as the previous episode, though at least now everyone is here (for the last time so far).
The Children’s Fight for Survival: I’m ambivalent. Not a whole lot happens but it’s all directed spectacularly (as in, it’s pure spectacle, and I respect that craft).
Escape the Burning Jungle: I’m ambivalent. Some good moments here, but otherwise still reiterating the same “this is a world where the strong eat the weak” bit from 3 episodes ago.
The Ultimate, WarGreymon: I don’t like it. It’s a worse repeat of episode 10.
The New Darkness, Millenniummon: I don’t like it. Lopmon was cool, but everything else was dull.
Soaring Hope: I like it. It finally made Takeru work as a character, explained what Patamon’s deal was and gave us branching evolution lines.
Hikari of Dawn: I’m ambivalent. There’s some good stuff here, but it’s so underwhelming after so much build-up.
Hikari and Tailmon: I’m ambivalent. Fun set-up, but Hikari’s personality change was immersion breaking and I just couldn’t ignore that once again vastly powerful characters (not just the protagonists, but MarinAngemon and Daipenmon) did nothing just so Tailmon got a moment to shine.
The Glowing Angewomon: I’m ambivalent. It’s pretty terrible that the way they decided to make us care about Tailmon accross is via exposition dump of her emotions and issues, and once again her big conversation with Hikari mid-battle was more than a little ridiculous, but it was a compelling concept for their bond, so I’m willing to overlook it.
Operation Satellite Sniper: I don’t like it. It was going well enough (still with problems, but well enough) until the gratuitious BlitzGreymon evolution and not even Koushiro’s info-dump on his feelings (which will most likely be forgotten after this episode again) could fix it.
