Faroe traffic jam. Driving in Faroe was pretty easy; light traffic, great roads and infrastructure and every view was amazing. My navigator did an incredible job although I was slightly concerned when we started down this road! Nevertheless, we carried on and ended up at a little harbour where we had lunch. Sheep are a bit of a hazard on the roads and if you hit one you have to make sure to compensate the owner. Totally hygge. This was our #airbnb place in #depil in the northern #faroeislands. It was so warm and cosy and the bedroom was under the eaves, I could only just stand up! On the Saturday night we heard a storm raging all night and when we woke up the world had turned white. We’d expected maybe a dusting of snow but there was at least 10cm and it didn’t stop snowing all morning. Thankfully the snow plough went back and forth clearing the road regularly. There was a hairy moment trying to reverse out of the parking space when I couldn’t even see where the road was but once on the main road it was clear. If we hadn’t had to drive back to #torshavn we would have done a snowy hike and then just hunkered down in the warm for the day. Beautiful Faroe! There are SO MANY waterfalls. It was an effort not to keep stopping every time we saw one. I can’t imagine what it must be like to live next to one all the time. Or in fact what it must be like to look out your window every morning and see mountains AND the sea. There an incredible sense of space in the Faroe Islands and that has to have a positive effect of people’s mental health. I certainly feel more at peace on the open when there’s big sky. Thats one of the reasons I love living in Jersey. When you wake up and the world looks like this....😁 I’ve come to the Faroe Islands for a weekend, ostensibly to try and see the Northern Lights but also to experience these amazing islands. We’ve had a night in a tiny cabin in the northern isles, quite remote. There are looming mountains behind and a view of the fjord in front. Last night we could hear a storm raging with rain and wind but I never expected this! When I first moved to Jersey I lived in the parish of St Brélade and La Corbière lighthouse was a five minute drive or a 45 minute walk along the cliff path. Now it takes a bit more effort to get here as I live in Trinity but I don’t think I will ever tire of this view. It is breathtaking every time I see it and in every type of weather. My favourite is during a storm when the waves are crashing against the rocks and the wind quite literally takes your breath away. Even on a dull January day the water is an amazing shade of turquoise. January was never going to be a great month in the northern hemisphere and we all knew that but the @jepnews today reported that Jersey has had the dullest start to the year since records began in 1925 with only 6 minutes of sunshine in the last 7 days. 6 MINUTES!!!! Luckily I received a Lumie wake up light for Christmas and for it set up yesterday, I was woken by a gradual sunrise and birdsong, it was lovely and definitely less of a shock than the usual alarm and darkness. Mighty Big Ben, well Elizabeth Tower to be exact. The last time I saw the tower looking like this would have been at least, AT LEAST 25years ago (OK I Googled it - clean up was between 1981 and 1986). At that time the Houses of Parliament were under wraps so that the stonework could be cleaned from the effects of pollution. This time the clock is being renovated and Big Ben will only chime on New Years Day and Remembrance Sunday until 2021 leaving London eerily quiet for almost 4 years. One of the things I wanted build into my time on London over the Christmas period was a visit to a gallery or museum as this is something I miss being in Jersey. It was exciting wandering around London and for a moment I missed the buzz and the people and the busy-ness of it. Just for a moment. After seeing the Courtauld exhibition of Impressionist paintings at the National Gallery (amazing) and fighting my way through the crowds to get home I’d had enough. I can’t wait to get back to my little island home! Christmas in the UK means days out with various members of my family and one of those days was to Hythe on the Kent coast. Despite having been born in Kent, I have never visited Hythe and it was a pleasant surprise to find a quaint town with lots of lovely shops including a tiny coffee shop and tea emporium tucked away at the back of @thatlittleplantshop (the chocolate brownies are recommended) and a new children’s bookshop called The Book Den, which was full of interesting and inspiring titles. I wish I was a kid again! From the high street it is a 5 minute walk to the beach and although it is January, the sun was wasn’t. I’m not a huge fan of the south coast beaches in England not enough shells and sea glass for me!) but it was a lovely afternoon in good company. Sadly the ossuary at St Leonard’s Church is closed until May but that definitely looks as though it’s worth a visit - who doesn’t love to see hundreds of skulls!! Le Perquage, St Brélade. A perquage is a path from the parish church to the sea. All 12 parishes in Jersey have one. If you committed a crime (in the old days) you could claim sanctuary in your parish church. If you had friends you could arrange a boat to take you off the island never to return, the alternative was to be hanged. All parishes have to have some coastal land so that they can have a perquage, if you look at a map of Jersey you’ll notice that St Saviour parish has a very small coastal area. St Peter, by comparison has two and all the other parishes have extensive coastal areas. St Brélade has the shortest perquage and the prettiest parish church, right by the bay. St Brélade’s Bay about 3pm yesterday afternoon. Time allowed for a walk from Quennevais to Portlet (roast dinner in the Portlet Inn) and back again. It was very windy but relatively warm and thankfully it did not rain. I love the beaches in winter, there were maybe 10 people on the beach, some surfing but mostly dog walkers and hikers. I love this photo from this weekend’s cider festival. I’ve debated whether or not to post it as it isn’t a great photo particularly but it gives me a sense of the day. In the UK I would avoid most festivals and fairs as they are often overcrowded, overpriced and generally unpleasant to attend. In Jersey fairs and festivals are on a much smaller scale and as such are really enjoyable. Honey competition at La Fais’sie d’Cidre at Hamptonne this weekend. All locally produced in Jersey.
