"Sunset View From The Porch" ... A breathtaking sunset paints the sky with vibrant shades of orange and red, casting a warm glow over the silhouetted trees and buildings. The layered clouds and crepuscular rays add depth and texture, creating a serene and picturesque scene.

Ninety percent of the focus of my attention when I'm at the ocean is directed straight east. The sight of waves rolling in, whether it be a sunshiny blue-sky day or one when dark clouds are gathered to create their own magical beauty, my eyes are on the ever-changing water. But one of the most magical aspects of being at the Outer Banks of North Carolina is what happens directly opposite facing west ... the frequent and amazing sunsets.

Since the houses, like me, tend to focus on ocean views, getting a full vision of those incredible sunsets sometimes requires a bit of ingenuity. Hanging off the edge of our upper story master bedroom deck, camera clenched tightly, and of course saying a little prayer, seemed to do the trick on this particular July evening in 2022.

The movie was tedious and I loathed every character I was meant to be charmed by, but I let it keep playing because of weird and remarkable moments like this one. I also find this kind of 50 year old media detritus interesting as a time capsule. Mame frames itself as progressive and rebellious against stodgy christian conservatism and I was so curious what its version of Progressive Values might be.

To its credit those values seem to be women's' rights to be sexually and financially independent, but the blatant shameless and total blindness to white supremacy feels shocking by 2023 standards. The film does want to give the impression it thinks racism is Bad, but there are only two black characters in the film, both are servants with no lines, and one of them is just a prop the villains talk about to establish they're Bad and Racist (to therefore justify that the hero and her (shitty) actions are Good).

Outside of craftsmanship or entertainment value, I look forward to the milquetoast "progressive", status-quo-preserving movies of 2023 being as shockingly unacceptable 50 years from now. 🤞

Today I watched a random free youtube movie musical: "Mame" and I hated every part of it so much except the 2 minute gag with the fox chase. It was remarkable how unpleasant I found every other moment and I am writing this post not for anyone else's education but a reminder for my future self to think back to this kernel of time.

If I share anything later it will be the unintentional horror of the musical number immediately following the fox chase because I think it belongs circulating the internet

Also I heard her name a hundred times over 2 hours and still cannot stop mentally reading it as MaMe like Bean instead of Maim
