when tweaking elements in character's designs (I'm talking specifically abt gw2 rn), with how I interact with the game and the looks of my characters, I think it's really interesting to consider when it's like.. a change to them within the canon and they've altered their appearance, or if it's a retcon and actually, 'no they always had this'...
for the most part when i make small tweaks (I gave dionaeri a new backpiece and different shoes recently) that's just a retcon, like I take back her having the shoes she had before because these are much more fitting.
on the other hand, eupheme, being my first 80 walked around in core vigil armour for a while because I didn't have the means to give any fancy combos to make and I still consider that canon to some degree because she does do vigil work for part of the year, split with her warband...
I'm not one for changing a character's look much at all, as I have so many and I like the thing they're wearing to be the quintessential version of them but I also do not like making whole new versions of a character to represent dramatic changes or different versions of them. I know some people do, but I firmly like each slot to be dedicated to a new character, and everyone on this bitch of an account operates within the same universe...
the only person I'm considering making a whole new version of for is rhydenach, as he's the commander (important boy with big big lore components) and I if I do, I want to literally make him a different colour (like caithe changed with aurene) with crystalline elements, to represent being aurene-ified.. but i absolutely will not change his current look in such a dramatic way because it feels wrong and I'd miss him as he is :(
so anyways, it's weird thinking about what it means for character when I change an element of their design
