Skills, the way forward
Skills, skills and more skills is the clarion call of India. Ever since the liberalization of the Indian economy in the eighties, the need for developing a strong skills-based workforce has been a priority with successive governments. The Indian industry has been calling for skills while its supply has left much to be desired. To bridge this gap, a number of ITIs, both public and private, have emerged over the past few years. As a result, if you are equipped with skills, there will be no dearth of employment, with or without any economic downturn.
How students benefit from ITIs
Govt. and Private ITI colleges have courses ranging from six months to three years. Most courses are of two years. Seventy percent of them are demonstration-based and 30 percent theoretical. Every year the students who have completed ITI courses are sent as apprentices to different factories or facilities related to their skills for a hands-on experience.
Some of the vocational training courses have been started in these institutions under the aegis Centers of Excellence. These specialized courses can be useful for employment and self-employment. These courses are of two years’ duration. After one year of training, examinations are conducted by the New Delhi-based National Certificate of Vocational Training (NCVT).
After the completion of an ITI course, pass outs can go for the AITT or All India Trade Test. The All India Trade Test is conducted by the NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training). This exam is a skills test that certifies the ITI students. After passing AITT, students are awarded National Trade Certificate (NTC) in trades concerned by NCVT. In many engineering trades, an NTC is equivalent to a diploma degree. Here are some pointers that may help you:
For those who have undergone ITI training in technical trades or engineering domains, there are several engineering diploma courses available.
Job opportunities are excellent after ITI because campus hiring at ITIs is a regular affair and, in most cases, students land decent jobs in the trade of their choice.
Also, ITI-trained students find jobs in Public Sector units such as IOCL, ONCG, Railways, Telecom, State-wise PWDs, and others as well as in private sectors like Realty, Automobile, Power, Cement, Mobile Telephony, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning.
