the greasy strangler (2016)
Tumblr media
directed by jim hosking
watched 02/05/2023
i sincerely mean it when i say i haven't seen anything this incredibly, invariably weird and un-giving-of-shits since flying lotus's 'kuso'; and that is truly saying something. as someone who is often tired of the same tropes and themes in every movie, something like this: something so completely, inarguably unique and irreverent, is very cathartic and loveable to me. i would not recommend this film to many people, but it feels almost made for me, humour-wise. i seriously haven't laughed this hard at a movie since i marathoned the 'jackass' films. the greasy strangler is gross and stupid but i found it to be endlessly charming and hilarious in a very masochistic way.

Things Get a “Little” Strange When Craig Robinson Wears a Tam O’Shanter Hat in ‘Beverly Luff Linn’ Trailer
youtube
Often times, the best trailers get you intrigued with a movie without really telling you what’s going on. You’re confused, yet, maybe you want to see more.
Such is the case with the trailer for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, directed by Jim Hosking and co-written by Hosking and David Wike. There seems to be a caper afoot, but the hype over a stage show that stars a man named Beverly Luff Linn (played by Craig Robinson) in Scottish garb seems to take precedence over any confusion (even though it’s not quite clear what the show is).
See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn in theaters and On Demand & Digital starting October 19th.

Matt Berry Reveals British Comedy ‘Toast Of London’ Is To Return
Matt Berry Reveals British Comedy ‘Toast Of London’ Is To Return
Tumblr media
Critically acclaimed British comedy Toast Of London, which has featured guest appearances from A-listers including Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and Jude Law, is returning for a new series, according to creator and star Matt Berry.
It had been thought that series three, which airs on Channel 4 in the UK and Netflix in the U.S, was likely to be the last season of the esoteric comedy. However, Berry, speaking on BBC Radio 6 Music, confirmed that he was writing more episodes of the show although he refused to be drawn on a timeline for the new series. It’s believed that Berry could take his British actor to the U.S for the fourth series.
Toast Of London, which is written by Berry and Father Ted writer Arthur Matthews and directed by Brass Eye director Michael Cumming, stars Berry as Steven Toast, an eccentric, middle aged actor who spends more time dealing with his problems off stage than performing on it.
The half-hour comedy, which is produced by All3Media’s Objective Media, has run for three, six-part series and has included a raft of guest stars including Hamm, Law, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Morgana Robinson, Vic Reeves, Martin Freeman and Sam Mendes.
Berry also briefly lifted the lid on his next project; a period crime comedy featuring a group of Victorian detectives. The show, which is produced by Objective for C4, is written by Veep writers and supervising producers Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley. A pilot featured Berry, Cucumber’s Freddie Fox and Chewing Gum’s Susan Wokoma “fighting notorious criminals in London in the 1880s”. Berry said they are now just waiting for the “money men” to make a final decision.
Berry, who is represented by CAA and Troika Talent, is starring in Park Pictures’ Jim Hosking-directed comedy feature An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn and will voice the forthcoming Moomins TV adaptation and Matt Groening’s Netflix animation Disenchantment

The Top 10 Films Of The Decade (2010-2019)
This decade for film was fantastic. Blockbusters coming out from every corner, the superhero genre dominating the market with actual quality and directors pushing out their greatest work with a freer range of ability. There has been alot of stinkers too, but I think the quality outweighs the dirge, if not in quantity.
So here are some rules:
1. I may have changed my opinion from previous lists. Sometimes things stick…sometimes they don’t.
2. I didn’t see every film this decade. But I am open to recommendations.
3. This is all personal opinion. And my tastes are odd.
10. Nocturnal Animals (Tom Ford)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
While A Simple Man saw Tom Ford step into the film world as if he had been here for years, Nocturnal Animals saw him throw down the glove as one of the most stylistic and vibrant ones currently active. For a man to go from the fashion world into this is really something to be admired. But the best thing about his movies, as glitzy and glum as they look, the stories and how he presents the narrative is most impressive. He does not take the audience on easy ride, both with content and order, but the pay off is earned completely in this film. Also the cast he chose was spectacular, but the biggest props has to be given to Aaron Taylor Johnson who plays one the greatest villains I have ever seen in the past few years.
9. Sightseers (Ben Wheatley)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2012
What started off as a stage show got turned into one of the most memorable and funniest comedies to come out in the past few years. Now, Ben Wheatley's most recent filmography has been brilliant, but I think this is his underlooked masterpiece, as it takes his earlier style and accentuates Steve Oram & Alice Lowe's hilarious writing and acting. A movie not for the faint hearted, it really delves into really odd places to pull laughs. Also, Wheatley's odd cult and psychedelic obsession also bodes well to the really obtuse and odd tone of the film. I can still watch this and get a laugh.
8. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
The biggest plead and cause for humanity to come together I have seen in a very long time. Denis Villeneuve's filmography has also been fantastic this decade, but overall this is his hidden masterpiece, as it's subtly is what makes it so powerful. Effects wise, the film looks spectacular and incredibly life like.  The cast do a fantastic job, but what really is the hook is the fantastic screenplay.
7. I Saw The Devil (Kim Jee-woon)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2010
When it comes to revenge movies, the Koreans are the best. Previously Park Chan-wook was the king of revenge films with the Revenge Trilogy being a prime example, but Kim Jee-woon has put his eyes on the crown with this mad dark twisted tale of a serial killer being hunted like game from the husband of one of his victims. Choi Min-sik does an amazing performance as a villain who does unspeakable crimes, but his torture is almost sympathetic, while the hero Lee Byung-hun has the hardest job of all, playing a hero doing the most unthinkable things in the spirit of revenge. Bloody, gory and constantly entertaining.
6. The Greasy Strangler (Jim Hoskings)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
This is on this list for all the wrong reasons. Unimaginably disgusting and asburdingly annoying, this film can't get out of my head. And after some of my friends saw it, we can's stop quoting it to each other, to the point where we can verbally speak most of the dialogue from scenes. Jim Hosking is a film-maker who is going to make really weird shit in the next few years. His sense of humour is so unique, its hypnotising. He's my rootie tootie disco cutie.
5. Calvary (John Michael McDonagh)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2014
After making a hilarious debut with The Guard, John Michael McDonagh surprised everyone with this dark comedy drama about a priest who has been threatened with murder from an anonymous source. But instead of it being a Guess Who, it's a character study of those closest to him. Brendan Gleeson's performance is fantastic, but the surprise of this film is the dramatic performances from Chris O'Dowd & Dylan Moran who usually are confined to comic roles. Not many people have seen this film, and I highly recommend this one for fans of fantastic screenplays.
4. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2013
Tarantino before this had made his masterpieces, so this movie really was just an add on to a continuous streak. But one of the reasons its on this list is for the pure enjoyment from it. Now the subject matter behind it is very bleak, and it can almost be a distraction, but Tarantino approaches it with an honorable style. The screenplay itself is fantastic, but the real joy of the movie is watching Jamie Fox, Christoph Waltz & Leonardo DiCaprio battle for chewing the scenery. Any excuse to watch this movie is a good excuse.
3. The Wolf Of Wall Street (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2014
Speaking of Leonardo DiCaprio chewing the scenery, this film is pretty much nothing but that. Ok that's a lie, Jonah Hill and Margo Robbie are also battling for a piece too. But besides the fantastic acting, this film is highly entertaining to an almost pornographic level, full of sex, drugs and excess. But it comes with a price, and Scorcese in pure Goodfellas style has made the consequences dire and to a point, rather absurd. It's 3 hours, but once its over, you want to watch it again.
2. Polisse (Maïwenn)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2011
Who ever thought that blue haired alien from The Fifth Element would have made one of all time favourite films. Maïwenn's screenplay and directing in this is top notch, even to a point where she's an actor in the film, who is  a photographer and journalist, to witness the events what's going on and reporting back to the audience (now that's what I call meta). The emotions in this film are high, going from drama to comedy, which sounds odd when it comes to the subject matter, but it just shows what life is like whenever you have one of the world's most stressful and emotional jobs. The acting is fantastic, but the real star is JoeyStarr, who before this film was a rapper. Another example of taking someone from one art to another to get a perfect performance. Emotionally draining but a fantastic spectacle.
1. Tyrannosaur (Paddy Considine)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2011
Wow, 2011 was one good year for film. I have always been a fan of Paddy Considine as an actor, and I was glad to know that he was going into directing (his previous writing in Dead Man's Shoes is fantastic). So what we got was a very very bleak film about a man dealing with depression and grief who finds friendship with a carefree Christian with a dark secret. The acting in this film is one for the record books. Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsden give fantastic performances, but Olivia Coleman steals the show with one of the most emotional performances I have ever seen on screen (she deserved that Oscar years before she got one, and I am very glad her acting talents are now being recognised). This is probably the best film ever made.

An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn Movie Review (2018)
Tumblr media
Making good absurdist cinema is a lot tougher than good absurdist cinema makes it look. This movie, a stab at absurdism that results in a swampy wallow in affectation, testifies to this fact with sad eloquence.
Directed by Jim Hosking from a script he co-wrote with David Wike, this competently assembled feature begins in what looks like a retro coffee shop. Its male employees are dressed in suits that look like I don?t even remember anymore?double-knits, maybe??and every wide ties. But the coffee shop is advertising a new ?Mid-Winter Blend,? and that kind of artisan marketing wasn?t really common in the 1970s or '80s so just when does this movie take place anyway?
I don?t want to give the impression that I myself was genuinely exasperated with these questions as I took in the deliberately stilted acting by Emile Hirsch, Aubrey Plaza, Sky Elobar and Zach Cherry in this scene. The circumscribed world Hosking creates here is deliberately unfixed in terms of period, just as the situations and dialogue are contrived for a particular feeling of unreality. Hirsch?s coffee-shop manager is named ?Shane Danger,? and after watch an evening with beverly luff linn 2018 -resources guy representing the ?Bob?s? chain of which this coffee shop is a part tells him he?s got to lay off an employee, he chooses to fire his own wife, Lulu, played by Plaza.
Discussing with his two remaining employees how they?re going to weather the storm of a shrinking business, Shane announces, ? Watch An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn 2018 think positive all the time. Okay, I have to take a shit. Can you guys watch the shop for 25 minutes?? On his departure, the guys wonder why he needs 25 minutes.
Although Lulu tells Shane she doesn?t hold her firing against him, there is a fissure in their marriage, one that widens when Lulu learns of an upcoming stage engagement of one Beverly Luff Linn??for one magical night.? A look through the photos in Lulu?s underwear drawer show her and Luff Linn in amorous clinches. Lulu has a past.
There ensues Shane and his buddies robbing the convenience store of Lulu?s brother (played by Sam Dissanayake). After which Lulu?s brother hires the rather shy and almost recessive gunman, or maybe the more accurate term is man who owns a gun, Colin, to get that money back. A confrontation leads to Lulu running off with Colin and the cash box to the hotel where Beverly Luff Linn, played by a very prosperous-looking Craig Robinson, is staging his magical night. Colin is besotted with Lulu but Lulu is all business, whatever that business actually is. As for Beverly Luff Linn, he is in the company of a male manager/partner who looks after his every need, and responds to everything he sees with guttural grunts and growls. Is he some kind of Frankenstein?s monster, or just in dire gastronomical distress? Mostly the latter, as it happens.

An Evening With Beverly Luff Lin: The Sensual Art Of The Grunt
An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn is a comedy crime film directed by Jim Hosking. The plot follows Lulu (Aubrey Plaza), as she runs away from her husband with a hired hitman (Jermaine Clement), to a hotel where her old flame (Craig Robinson) is singing.
So, this was a weird one, I had no idea what this film was about going into it, I was not familiar with Hosking or his other works beforehand,…

A Puzzling "Evening" with Ms. Plaza
Sure. I’m intrigued by Aubrey Plaza’s performances in films like Safety Not Guaranteed, Ingrid Goes West and Hal Hartley’s Ned Rifle but other choices (The To-Do List and Addicted to Fresno come to mind) are, frankly, puzzling.
However, An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin, written and directed by a young Brit named Jim Hosking, may be her most baffling choice to date.
Ms. Plaza essays the…

"Although I don't know quite what's going on, I'm having a great time, Lulu." Universal + Content Group have unveiled the first official trailer for a bizarre, funky, indie comedy titled An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then also played at the Rotterdam and Galway Film Festivals. This is the second film by Jim Hosking and the follow-up to his uber-weird The Greasy Strangler from a few years ago. Aubrey Plaza stars as Lulu Danger, whose unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the worse when a mysterious man from her past comes to town to perform an event called "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only." The eccentric cast includes Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch, Craig Robinson, Matt Berry, Maria Bamford, Sky Elobar, and Jacob Wysocki. This is all just way too weird for me, but I do appreciate the unabashed originality in here.
Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Jim Hosking's An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, from YouTube:
After getting fired by her scheming husband Shane Danger (Emile Hirsch) from his cappuccino shop, dissatisfied Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) is stunned when a TV commercial for “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn For One Magical Night Only” reveals a mysterious man from her past (Craig Robinson). When Shane and his bumbling cohorts steal the cashbox from Lulu’s adopted vegan brother Adjay (Sam Dissanayake), specialist Colin (Jemaine Clement) enters the fray to retrieve the stolen funds. But Lulu seizes the opportunity to run off in search of her mystery man—and events only become stranger from there. This is a story of love, theft, athletic swimming, and a magical magical event. An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn is directed by British filmmaker Jim Hosking, making his second feature film after the controversial cult hit The Greasy Strangler previously anda few shorts. The screenplay is written by Jim Hosking & David Wike. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Universal + Content Group will release An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn in select theaters + on VOD starting October 19th.
