ranger's apprentice characters' reactions to Will's beard

Cassandra: gagged. actually. gagged.

Gilan: just started laughing uncontrollably. couldn't stop. had to be physically removed from the grounds and taken to the infirmary.

Halt: silent for a few seconds, then walked into a room, came back, put a razor in Will's hand, and said "you can't pull it off. shave."

Alyss: bit her lips because you do you honey, but she wasn't the biggest fan. never told him, though.

Pauline: "Will, sweetheart, are you sure?"

Maddie: started crying. as a baby and again as a teenager. will cry again.

Tug: bit into his beard to pretend it was hay.

Horace: as it turns out, he knows quite some unladylike language himself.

Duncan: didn't realise it was Will, apologised to the new Ranger for not knowing his name.

Crowley: "absolutely not. i do NOT need a second Halt in my ranks" (Halt couldn't disagree with him on this very particular manner)

Arald: turned to Sandra and asked, "can I order him to shave?" Sandra wished she could've said yes.

George: legit didn't notice. rumour has it he did notice, he's just in denial.

Jenny: started serving Will tons and tons more napkins... was it a silent hint?

Erak: .2 seconds away from banning the boy.

about Disliking Wills Beard Week:

it’s week 43 of the year, which means I have exams. from which I distract myself by hosting everyone’s favourite time of year: Disliking Will’s Beard Week. it’s edition number three, how far we’ve come!

some guidelines:

this is a week to dislike Will’s beard. no beard positivity allowed 😤😤😤 (jk of course)

this event takes place on TikTok, Tumblr, and Instagram. each has their own special things, but there’s also a bunch of reposting.

in the end, it is about having fun. you’re allowed to be irrational, in denial, but not disrespectful.

He’s slowly losing his mind

The thing with the beard

Though it never says so explicitly, it is definitely implied: Will would usually shave and not grow a beard. It’s why he’s described as having a baby face, with cute, round cheeks. A beard just doesn’t fit him. 

When, eventually, he does grow a beard, it’s understandable. Alyss, the love of his life, has just passed away. It doesn’t make sense. Nothing makes sense. Will stops caring. Stops taking care of himself. He doesn’t clean, doesn’t shave, doesn’t care. Of course he grows a beard. 

And not just because shaving costs a little too much energy, but also because Will grows to like the beard. He does. When he was still with Alyss - when she was still alive - he was himself. Without a beard. And now that she’s gone - well, he’s not the same person anymore, is he? And the beard symbolises that. 

So it makes sense. The beard. It’s okay. But-

Will’s doing better now. He is. He takes care of himself, for his friends, for Maddie, for himself. And no, he’s not the same person he was before Alyss died. He’ll never be. But he’s doing better. He’s smiling again, and laughing, and joking. There are even days that he’s happy. And yet the beard is still there. 

If the beard came into being because Will was depressed, wouldn’t its symbolism be even stronger if it disappeared when Will realises he’s no longer depressed? 

So, if anything, shaving the beard is less about going back to the person he was before, and more about moving on from the person he was when he didn’t didn’t care enough to be.

i already knew that my beard-hating did not go unnoticed by the aussie publishers, but i did not expect to open facebook at 6am and see that they POSTED about it

It got to the point where even criminals were asking Will to shave.

Will: stop in the name of the king!

Bandit: what the hell is on your face?

maddie: uncle will? can i talk to you?

will: yeah, maddie, of course. what’s up?

maddie: it’s about … boy problems.

will: oh. okay. go one.

maddie: it’s just … there’s this boy i like - well, a man, really - and i’ve known him for quite a while and i really care about him. but he has something, something that he should let go of, but instead he holds onto it. i think it’s really unhealthy and i’m a worried about how it’s affecting him and the people close to him.

will: well maddie, if that’s how you feel, you need to tell him. tell him how you feel about this habit to keep something alive that he shouldn’t.

maddie: i’ve tried. but he doesn’t seem to want to listen to me or his friends. he’s very stubborn, you see. refuses to admit when i’m right, too.

will: honestly, maddie, i don’t think he’s a very good friend if he does that. who is this man? do i know him?

maddie: i think you know him very well, actually. maybe even better than i do.

will:

will: this is about my beard, isn’t it?

maddie: i think you know.

Gilan: *slams door shut from behind*

Will, spinning around, saxe in hand: Gilan!?

Gilan: It’s time, Will

Will: Time for what? What’s going on?

*Gilan, appearing from the shadows, rope in one hand and scissors in the other*

Will: gILAN—

Gilan: It’ll be over soon
