Whats your dissertation about? (if you dont mind sharing, I love learning what people online are up to academically)
Gonna be honest, this turned into me writing out a good bit of the dis outline so I've put it under a cut, but for reference, this mindmap is all of the initial ideas research Ive done for this
Tumblr media
So the working title rn is
'Passion, Plagiarism, and Piracy: Are Digital Spaces and Practices Having A Negative Impact on the Creative Industries and How We Engage with Them?'
which is very inspired by talks I've been having this past year with my lecturer about the design industry (in Scotland, at least) and how many studios are actively searching out people working with analogue methods rather than digital ones. I thought it was an interesting move as design specifically is heavily associated with digital methods (aka the Adobe suite), and the advancements in these technologies should be making digital design more innovative, more appealing etc etc but it's having the opposite effect.
I'm looking at how generative AI is a large contributor to this mentality, or at least potentially the catalyst for it. I've admittedly already looked at genAI A LOT for uni work, so I've got a lot to go on with this. Specifically, I'd look at the Accessibility arguments with AI and the 'i could do that' attitude people have to art and design today (this is the plagiarism section)
Id also look at digital piracy and the ethics and morals around that in today's society. Is it ever acceptable to pirate something? how much does piracy cost and impact creatives? This section is likely to be a little anecdotal but I'm also going to look at Alex Hirsch and the ULTRAKILL dev. His quote "culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it" is the entire reason I'm adding a chapter on class and how that influences all of these other factors.
Moving on from class as an influence and barrier, a dedicated section to creative passion and how acting upon that passion is, in itself, a radical act. With conservative views on the rise and intentional cuts to creative industries and cultures to aid in this, being unapologetically creative is fighting back. I believe that engaging with AI trends and devaluing art and design, being ok with artists and designers being underpaid and fighting for employment, is indicative of being complacent in the rise and normalisation of these views.
The difference in how artists/designers engage with the creative industries Vs non artists/designers (for the sake of ease, I'm going to call them consumers until I think of something better) is night and day. Consumers are likely to only care about the final product and aren't concerned with material or process, where as I'd argue for creatives, material and process are half the fun.
Social media also gives an unrealistic idea of the creative industries. Amateur artists, posting their work for fun and community, may be held to standards and expectations of a professional. A professional artist/designer may be expected to post as if that were their full time job regardless of how they work or who they're working for. Both are detrimental to the individual and industry. There's a fundamental misunderstanding of how long things take in professional contexts and people will form whole opinions and beliefs because of this misunderstanding (people really think Overwatch developed an entire game mode with new maps and character abilities in 2 months in response to marvel rivals. they did not.)
this will all come together in a cohesive conclusion that I don't have enough research to form yet.
Thank you for asking anon, I actually did need to write it all out like this as part of the proposal and was really struggling to do it and now I have!! also if anyone has any points you think I should/could explore, PLEASEEEE tell me about it, it would be awesome :]

@two-hands-toward-the-sun
so the gist of this hypothetical dissertation would be talking about queerness as an embodied concept in the OG sandman comix - namely how queerness becomes elided with bodily autonomy (or lack thereof). from my proposed triad, clearly i am thinking about the Corinthian, but i'd also want to talk about Wanda, Desire, Hazel and Foxglove. i'd be situating my analysis in relation to the AIDS crisis (which informs a lot of the comix), alongside a foucaultian understanding of biopolitics (whose bodies are seen as expendable and to what extent, whose bodies are under surveillance/control, etc).
some thoughts i'd want to explore: Wanda's womanhood and how it's realized through the medium but also contested among the powers that be - ritual magic vs the Endless. Desire as a villain and nonbinary identities as a disruption to spacetime as a storied concept. the Corinthian as specifically queer horror: he preys on young men, outing them in their deaths, and he's the worst case scenario of cruising, which involves a lot of vulnerability in the face of societal violence. (VERY interesting, also, that the second Corinthian's "redemption," so to speak, involves saving a small [read: innocent] child from violence and no real address of the desire that had him [heavily implied] sleeping with his victims.) who "gets" to embody queerness and what are the limits on that expression? what does queerness "look like" in the sandman universe? how are these bodies regulated/surveilled? there's a lot of overlap with queerness, violence, and/or disease in the sandman comix that reflects the ideas of the period in which it was made, but also...imho...deserves serious critique.

i feel so busy yet not busy at all. i spend days writing (short stories; proposals; applications; a delayed dissertation in the library); spend three days a week at work; spend evenings out and yet - i rarely feel i have anything to show from it...
i spent last weekend at sundance london, i watched five films, including kinds of kindness, kneecap, etc. i saw the tv glow was the standout but for very personal reasons, and i'm not sure how it translates to people without an experience of dysphoria. i have thought about the film every day since i first watched it (six days ago); i think because i hadn't seen thoughts, feelings, private fears i've had illuminated on a screen like that before; it felt exposing, and claustrophobic, but also reassuring, but also i feel unsure how to move forward in light of it all. i feel like i need my friends to watch the film (though it is not out on UK release until mid-July, I think) so i can have an almost therapeutic conversation... i told H that i want my body to not be this body, that if i could - i would - but that i think it's too late for me to make any real changes (hence my subtle non-binary hrt micro-dosages that may or may not have an effect beyond the psychological) (though H swears i look different since). the idea of it being too late is the entire third act of the film so hence, the feeling of being seen, and the devastation / beauty of that.
my birthday is in two weeks exactly. and for the first time since high school i will be in the place i live for it (i have always managed to be outside of london even if just for a day trip somewhere) and H is planning a birthday picnic / get-together for me, which is one of the most loving gestures i've received but also i feel vulnerable, because i have so few friends? or at least i have so few close friends. so many just... people i know? i used to blame this on not having a home town / moving around countries growing up. but i've been in london for almost... 14 years now (fuck) and there may only be like 3 other friends besides us at the picnic (vs one of these 3 friends who is having a birthday the week before and has 60 guests?!). i feel embarrassed and i know i lost years as an unpaid carer and my world got smaller and i've only been rebuilding it in the last 18 months but still. in mexico, i found it so easy to make friends, to make such intimate, instant connections, it felt so validating, but it feels so hard to translate that here. and it's not like i don't go out. yesterday, i played football with the queer team i'm part of, the day before i went to a pub quiz with a friend, i go to the community garden once a week, and tonight i have a poetry workshop, and in the near future a dance class, and on and on and on. busy yet not busy. social yet not social, and on and on and on.
all of this ^ reminds me of an exposing realisation i had in my therapy last year, which is that my past two relationships (H and J) have been with people i knew initially from tumblr. and that these relationships have been the strongest of my life. that dating apps never worked. nor did meeting people in real life ever offer anything besides brief romances or mild friendships. and that i thought perhaps it was because tumblr afforded me a space to be anonymous and so, for better or worse, i was my most genuine and authentic self on tumblr, that i could share my interests, my hopes, my innermost innermost, without shame / fearing judgment, that it didn't matter because i knew no-one on here (without my brain cutting me off like it would in real life, or without the voice in my head telling me to stay quiet, or shape myself to suit the person i was hanging out with), it was in effect a darkened confession booth, and when people saw that, saw me, and liked me still, it felt okay to be myself, to be vulnerable [as embarrassing as tumblr being my most effective yet accidental dating pool is] [i am still working on being that 'shameless' about my self with others and it is so much better than it was, even a year ago, but still, something sooner or later always gets caught when i try to speak] [a w-i-p]
other things in my life
i performed poetry at the barbican centre a couple weeks back (and performed for the first time in front of my parents - after first performing maybe seven years ago?) (and my dad, stereotypically repressed, kept saying how proud he was of me, and i can't remember if he has ever said that before]
my police station bail date was moved a month back, and my bail conditions might even be dropped ! [blocking your nearest immigration van soon]
the day after my birthday, H and I go away for almost three weeks and i can't wait. but at the same time, i am conscious of wanting to be as present as possible this summer.

Citations, citations, citations
My original research project at Notre Dame was on EEG oscillatory correlates of memory encoding in young and older adults. I haven't published this work yet, but it's a work in progress that I'm optimistic about. Fast forward two years into my PhD, and my advisor decided to leave the university. I had to switch labs and, initially, I was not too worried. However, switching fields in science is like switching careers. Adding to the stress is that when writing a dissertation, your advisor is not allowed to look at the writing. The idea is that you need to practice working independently at this point and that you will be reviewed based on your ability to conduct science without supervision.
The challenge is that I have never written anything under my new advisor before. Coupled with writing in a completely new topic, needless to say that I'm a tad nervous about how this is going to go.
Today's exercise: Citations
Part of preparing my dissertation has been reading Belcher's book on writing a journal article. Although this isn't the most ideal book for a dissertation, there is still some sound advice that I'd like to extract. Today, I read about the importance of citations and how to cite properly. To date, I use Zotero citation manager. I essentially have a folder where I upload PDFs and Zotero will automatically create the citation for me. I also write using Microsoft Word because this is my advisor's preferred method (even though she won't be looking at this document). However, it's now force of habit. I have the Zotero extension on MS word and it will automatically create a bibliography based on the citations I embed into my document.
Here is an idea of what my Zotero looks like (not the most organized at the moment):
Tumblr media
And here is what the Zotero extension looks like on MS word:
Tumblr media
I knew that special attention should be paid to citations, but the book is revealing to what degree. For example, big ideas are often difficult to cite because they are the basis of many experiments today. In my field, Endel Tulving is the name that's cited often as proposing the model of episodic memory, so I can essentially guarantee his 1972 textbook will end up being cited. Similarly, knowing when to cite reviews vs. original articles is difficult. You want to pay homage to those who went through the process of conducting an experiment, but a literature review consolidates the work of many experiments into a comprehensive framework. Other tips I sort of picked up on as an academic: it's not part of our practice to cite unpublished theses or tertiary works like magazines, textbooks, or news articles. Primary or secondary sources, like reviews, are the standard.
One tip I was not aware of was how the number of citations in your article is correlated with how often you yourself will get cited. Essentially, articles that are built upon previously published research are more persuasive and therefore are more likely to be cited.
Lately, I have been going into journals that I look up to, like NeuroImage, Neurobiology of Aging, and Nature to review more recent abstracts in my field. I strongly recommend that graduate students do this more often to stay on top of latest discoveries in the field. I used to rely heavily on Google Scholar and PubMed to identify any and all work relevant to my field. However, there is something to be said about the act of going into high-impact journals, looking at their latest volumes, and examining what is getting published lately. One paper I don't think I would've ever found through my old method is a review published by Dr. Mara Mather on her new framework for looking at emotional memory and cognitive aging. She argues that older adults exhibit a positivity bias as a preferential method of alleviating their arousal system. Meaning, because older adults tend to show higher arousal for their age, they have a stronger pull towards positive stimuli as a sort of internal coping mechanism.
It made for a really interesting discussion at a conference dinner I attended. I brought up the paper and was surprised the see the mixture of opinions by different scientists. My peers offered different criticisms, perspectives, and interpretations.
The Politics of Citations
I have the privilege of knowing many well-renowned scientists in my field thanks to my time as a lab manager in Dallas. Networking is an important part of my career, so if I am interested in post-docing with a potential professor, I will email them ahead of time requesting a 15 minute coffee. 100% of the time they will say yes. So this has helped me interact with incredible scientists.
That being said, because I know many of these incredible scientists, I now notice that I am more likely to cite them. I recognize their names on papers and instantly assign high value to that paper because I know their reputation. This is highly problematic because I am biasing myself against scientists I may not have either interacted with or may not even be living in the United States, who do not have the financial means to attend conferences or otherwise. By reviewing the incredible work by scientists I look up to, I notice that I will allow their ideas to go unchallenged; essentially, I assume their argument is flawless, and I, a lowly graduate student, couldn't possibly know more than, say, the work of Drs. Kensinger or Duarte. But offering genuine questions and critiques of even the greatest minds should be part of our graduate student training.
There was one paper I repeatedly reviewed because her experiment closely resembled mine. First off, I assumed this individual was a tenured professor (nothing wrong with that). One day, I was curious to know more about this individual and thought, "maybe I could post-doc for them". It turns out this awesome paper was written by a fellow graduate student! Even though this is an example of a very positive bias, it shows the assumptions I bring when reviewing papers.
All in all
Being diligent in citing papers is a given. However, the tips really reminded me of the importance of giving credit where credit is due. Not to mention, the people behind those citations who put in weeks or even years behind their research. It would be a sin to overlook them. While there are considerations for citing big and small ideas, thoughtfulness is needed when citing other people's work.

A comparison of a literature review by ChatGPT and expert writers
ChatGPT- an innovative content generation tool
ChatGPT, an innovative content generation tool developed by OpenAI, employs machine learning algorithms to create text (Ariyaratne, 2023). Early users of ChatGPT have commended its ability to generate high-quality content, thanks to its utilization of Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on extensive data to predict the most suitable text, resulting in natural-sounding output. University students are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for assistance with assignments, literature reviews, and dissertations.
Nevertheless, several articles have raised concerns about the potential obsolescence of traditional assignments due to ChatGPT's ability to produce high-scoring papers and encourage critical thinking. The ethical and permissible boundaries of using ChatGPT in scientific writing remain uncertain (Gao, 2022).
Studies on the reliability of ChatGPT content
Research has been undertaken to rigorously assess the capabilities of chatbots in academic contexts. Yeadon et al. (2023) conducted a study evaluating ten physics essays for academic content, topic comprehension, and writing style. Their findings indicated that essays authored by AI exhibited high quality, albeit with variations similar to those found in human-written essays.
Herbold et al. (2023) compared essays produced by humans with those generated by ChatGPT, revealing that the latter yielded high-quality content, particularly in crafting argumentative essays. The AI-generated content displayed a structured format, often featuring similar introductory and concluding phrases like "Overall," "In summary," and "In conclusion." In contrast, human-written essays tended to be less structured, adhering less strictly to preset guidelines.
However, researchers have highlighted limitations of ChatGPT for academic research, notably its inability to generate original ideas, relying instead on preexisting training data. This reliance increases the risk of plagiarism significantly. Ariyaratne et al.'s 2023 study found that four out of five papers generated by ChatGPT contained errors, with one even including false references, raising concerns about the tool's authenticity in academic research. Kleebayon (2023) observed a tendency for ChatGPT to produce biased content.
ChatGPT vs Expert Writers
Liao and Sundar (2023) conducted an experiment describing the MAIN model for communication. The following is an excerpt from the study, serving as evidence that ChatGPT cannot be utilized for conducting a literature review:
“Prompt: Explain the MAIN Model by Shyam Sundar
ChatGPT: The MAIN Model, created by S. Shyam Sundar, is a theoretical framework that elucidates how individuals process and comprehend information they come across online and how the structure of digital media platforms influences this process. The abbreviation MAIN represents Media Affordances and Heuristics-based Information Processing. The model proposes that the structure of digital media platforms, particularly the technological capabilities of the platform, shapes the cognitive shortcuts that users utilize when processing information. Technological capabilities are the features and opportunities that a platform offers for users to engage with information, such as browsing, searching, and filtering. Cognitive shortcuts are mental strategies that people employ to simplify decision-making and information processing, such as the availability heuristic, the representativeness heuristic, and the affect heuristic. The MAIN model indicates that the structure of digital media platforms impacts how individuals process information, as different capabilities and shortcuts can result in varying outcomes in information processing. For instance, a platform with robust search capabilities may prompt users to use the availability heuristic and depend on the initial results they encounter, while a platform with strong social features may prompt users to use the affect heuristic and rely on others' opinions.”
To the uninitiated, the response appears correct. However, specialists in the field can discern its accuracy. Similarly, if a student solely references ChatGPT without consulting academic literature for their literature review, they may misinterpret concepts, potentially negatively impacting their review.
Furthermore, scholars argue that it is unethical to utilize ChatGPT for literature reviews and other academic research endeavors when it cannot serve as a co-author (Haman, 2023).
Here is the content for the MAIN model, written by a human:
The MAIN model, conceptualized by Shyam Sundar, is an acronym representing the four primary functions of media that can have psychological impacts on the audience: Modality (M), Agency (A), Interactivity (I), and Navigability (N). While the source and content of digital media are vital in establishing perceived credibility, the MAIN model emphasizes the technological attributes of digital media that can shape judgments of credibility.
Modality pertains to the format of the media and is the most visible aspect. It closely aligns with the notion of medium because traditionally, media exhibit different modalities, with print primarily textual, radio auditory, and television audiovisual. Agency, or the agent, serves as the origin, particularly on a psychological level, especially in the absence of another attributed source for specific information. Interactivity encompasses both interaction and activity. It also suggests that the medium is responsive to user input and capable of adapting to variations in user engagement. Through the provision of navigation tools, such as steering wheels, the interface can foster a sense of self-direction in users. Contemporary media offer users numerous choices for how to access and navigate through a mediated environment (Sundar, 2015).
Conclusion
ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence tool based on Large Language Models, trained to generate content resembling human writing. It has garnered considerable attention for its ability to produce content. Studies have demonstrated ChatGPT's capability to generate organized essays. However, there have been concerns regarding the reliability of sources, potential plagiarism, and content quality. A comparison between ChatGPT-generated content and human-authored content reveals inaccuracies in ChatGPT's output. Thus, students should approach its use for assignments and dissertations with caution. Nonetheless, ChatGPT can still be beneficial for structuring content.

End of week 4 recap
Heard about Nicki's practice Monday morning and had my dissertation tutorial with Dana Monday afternoon [see previous post]
was my birthday on Tuesday and then woke up ill on Wednesday :')))
visited East Street market, Borough market and Canary Wharf. Was going to go to Camden but got tired and then it started raining
worked on our proposal for the group exhibiton identity and pitched on Friday. We named our exhibition identity the Conservatory Collection inspired by the space that the work was going to be displayed in (the windows and bright light that always forms a backdrop to the work in the space). This was something we wanted to carry through into the design of our exhibition publication, so we designed a grid system reflective of the shape of a window that each of the captions. In regard to image treatment each image would abide by this grid system, and for the type treatment we decided on a Gothic-style typeface paired with a more neutral serif typeface. We liked the contrast between the typeface and I think we had some really great feedback afterwards discussing how the scale of the image paired with the typeface didn't feel like they were quite fitting together. Kaiya suggested that instead of trying to balance the two, that we could lean into the two components by exaggerating the difference in scale, or the thickness of the lines etc. which I thought was really interesting to take forward with me in the future. We also suggested in our pitch that we would have bookmarks that would be displayed next to each piece, and that viewers could use to briefly describe any references they would recommend and therefore encourage some form of knowledge exchange within our graphic design student community. This was one of the things in our research that was well received in our feedback from the tutors, and I think was an outcome of productive negotiation within our group (how do we design for a given public- ie. a room of graphic design students, how much were we asking of them as viewers and what seemed like a suitable level to ask for vs. where might this be asking too much as a viewer)
had a discussion with Kaiya about ideas for personal exhibition collection so far. How can I combine text and image (allude to meme format ???) Drawing on visual languages. Receipt- proof of exchange. Opportunity to explore new print output??

hello everyone !!! as tumblr decided to send me to the shadow real for a month and i do have a tendency to overshere on here, i thought it would be fun to go through my last month to update my lore (the key things are that i now have no bedroom and i am obsessed with ana mena) through my tweets (i was forced to use that website more i'm afraid). and of course, i will translate everything so don't worry :)
hope you like it!!! this is probably gonna be long so i'll add everything under the cut:
we start at day 1 a.T. (after tumblr) which was a very important day actually (pokémon day for those who don't know)
Tumblr media
they deactivated my tumblr account for no reason?
2. without tumblr, that day i was forced to go to twitch and see ibai's stream announcing the participants of la velada 3 (unfortunately this won't be my last twitch moment here i'm so sorry)
Tumblr media
from left to right and top to bottom:
WHAT IS GOING ON (qrt to: this fight is gonna be legendary. amouranth vs mayichii)
they should kiss (this is about viruzz vs shelao, it is funnier with context sorry)
it's now a reality. this is gonna be insane @/fernanfloo
i think rivers will win (the second tweet it's for context: the second fight of la velada del año 3 is rivers vs la rivers)
3. spoiler alert: i was struggling with uni stuff (and especially administrative uni stuff) all month <3
Tumblr media
(it is impossible to translate this tweet literally so bear with me)
it's unbelievable how much the people in the university of wales don't give a fuck
here's the fun little context for this one: i should've started my semester on february 1st. i had received no notice of enrolling in it, there was no way to do it on the page habilitated for it, and my master's director wasn't answering my mails concerning my dissertation proposal and supervisor or anything really. i sent the sorta student help thingie platform a mail on february 28th asking for guidance and they answered me an hour later telling me i could enroll. my master's director also emailed me telling me i had a supervisor now. lol. fun. great.
4. this will not be my only ana mena related tweet in this list i am afraid
Tumblr media
(the quoted tweet is the singer ana mena as a little girl in a tv show and a sign that reads 'when she grows up she wants to be an archaeologist') she's made it cause the rest of the spanish musical industry is BONES besides her
5. i swear this is my last twitch moment i think. anyways. the squid games. yeah. it was very funny cause every person whose pov i decided to watch died <3
Tumblr media
same order as before:
(the quoted tweet says 'i think i'll watch the squid games from pandarina's pov') tweets that aged up badly: [she died on the first day]
everyone whose pov i'm seeing today dies (ander and zeling) lol
oleeee susi hasn't died let's gooooo
today i won't be able to watch the squid games so i'm only saying @/suzyroxx to the final !!!! [she wasn't in the final <;3]
6. it starts *looks into the distance remembering the horrors*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINALLY the predoctoral UCM [my uni] scholarships are here folks
and the meme says the same but more accurately <3
7. that time my 55 year old uncle out of nowhere sent me a tiktok of nochentera and told me he loved it
Tumblr media
my uncle being a nochenterist exactly (in the pic he only says 'it's so good!!!')
8. there are so many horrors relating to that goddamn predoc scholarship that i don't even remember the context of this one <3
Tumblr media
official bulletin of the complutense university or bulletin of shit ??? [this one is funnier in spanish, it's a meme from a show]
9. i do remember this one tho. this was a fun one.
Tumblr media
i suddenly have a new thesis director and a master's dissertation supervisor lol
context: this was the day that my master's director emailed me telling me i finally had a dissertation supervior assigned. the other part is funnier. SO. i had a thesis director chosen from when i started all this process. she was great. love you miriam mwah. anyways. she had another student doing the thesis with her (a student that is my friend). turns out, for the ucm predoc shit there could only be one thesis director per person. no fucking clue why. so we all talked it out and thought the best solution was for me to have another one, and maybe miriam could be my co-director in the future. the funny thing is, this new supervisor (cruz) was my first choice way back when i started thinking about doing the ph.d. i just chose miriam in the end cause she was my master's thesis' director. so yeah. i could've chosen cruz from the start and i wouldn't have had these many problems. but whatever.
10. MANDATORY MEMORIAS DE IDHÚN TWEET
Tumblr media
plot twist in memorias de idhún the funky little guy is VICTORIA
(they're right btw)
11. the la casa de bernarda alba miami remake incident. this ruined my day, my week, my month and possibly my year as well. if you haven't seen this and feel strongly about federico garcía lorca please skip this one i don't want to ruin your day.
Tumblr media
you know the drill:
i'm angry cause i can't go to tumblr and go off [literally it says 'shit on the mothers'] at everyone who thought and adaptation of la casa de bernarda alba IN MIAMI is coherent, logical and necessary.
you have to travel to 2023 to stop that aberration from happening [this one's for my emdt besties <3]
this one is already in english
the only modern adaptation of la casa de bernarda alba i will accept [this day i also realised that episode really is an adaptation of la casa de bernarda alba which made me love paquita salas even more]
lorca reading this
and this one's also in english :)
12. oh btw i rewatched druck s5 and s6 just to feel something. wasn't brave enough to watch s7 & s8 tho <3
Tumblr media
[first pic]
the machwitz sisters from druck are the best fictional sisters that exist i don't fucking care if you don't agree
and yes i cried again with them
[pic 2]
the thing about rewatching druck's s5 is that now i want to rewatch druck's s1-4 only because of kiki
literally the best minutt for minutt of all skam i could scream
[pic 3]
possibly my favourite fictional ship above... yes... percabeth
there, i said it
i am once again stanning kieutou i'm so sorry
i was gonna start season 6 tomorrow but it happened
i don't know if i should watch s7 and s8 to be able to say i've watched all druck even if i know they're shitty [spoiler: i didn't do that]
13. maybe i went through a mini-skam craze last month.
Tumblr media
people of twitter, it is a pleasure to announce that i have included references to skam in my book [specifically that moment at the end of sana's season when everything with the girls is resolved and she sent a message to yousef to meet up but he isn't answering]
14. i thought this meme was extremely funny and made for me specifically
Tumblr media
just in case you don't know; pic 1 is the academy of OT [Operación Triunfo], pic 2 is the geography and history building of the UCM (mini spoiler i went there later in the month), pic 3 is the school entrance in skam, and pic 4 is the pool in druck s3.

fun fact i found out about this when my mum sent it to the groupchat. my sister and i do live in the same house and speak to each other daily :) they just didn't tell me :)
16. :(
Tumblr media
another day missing tumblr
17. i watched a ton of national selections but i only really tweeted portugal's so yeah
Tumblr media
i'll go chronologically with these ones so it's less confusing lol
please let nasci maria win it's the only song out of all preselections that i've had stuck in my head
a pretty good top 3 tbh, any of those songs deserves to win
it should be said that i've seen a ton of preselections this year and i've only saved two songs from portugal's preselection in spotify.
well i lied. i think there's also one or two songs from sanremo. but whatever
18. i did this cool pokémon chart which made me realise my favourite pokémon type is steel actually
Tumblr media
i've seen fola do this on stream and i wanted to do it myself :)
what do you think people do i have taste or not
here's the chart if you want to take a closer look at it!
Tumblr media
19. this was around the time i really started to resonate with carlos peguer's tweets. i think he's the closest thing to a spanish mike's mic so we have to cherish and celebrate him i think.
Tumblr media
i felt these tweets about amaia's music on a spiritual level. he was so right.
she really was insane for this
the moon reflects on my BITTEN NAILS [this are the opening lyrics of nuevo verano PLEASE listen to it i'm begging]
20. emdt time!!! i finished s2 but it was so hard to do it without liveblogging it on tumblr :( i tweeted a bit about it tho (but only a little!!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
why no one told me my town's palace appears in el ministerio del tiempo [i'm kinda glad i wasn't on tumblr here cause i would've purposefully doxxed myself lol. anyways it was certainly something seeing it, especially knowing the actors were IN MY TOWN filming for DAYS and i didn't even know it. disgraceful]
i wish i could talk about the episode i'm seeing of emdt on tumblr cause it's super funny [it was the one where they have to pretend they're a normal ministerio !!!! 10/10 i had so much fun]
21. i also may or may not have gotten addicted to ck3 like a fucking nerd
Tumblr media
the way i started playing crusader kings at nine thirty 'to spend some time until i go to bed' and suddenly it's past midnight ????
22. ⚠️the march 15 incident ⚠️ a lot happened today lol. and no, i'm not referring to the ides of march. i even forgot about them. busy day.
Tumblr media
you can tell how i went through the whole spectrum of human emotions that day <3 anyways, i'll go in chronological order
how's your morning going people i woke up at 6:45 for a job interview but when i got to the bus stop i realized i don't have the transport chart recharged and i don't have enough money in my bank account to recharge it. lol.
in the end i managed to get to the interview and i even talked with an argentinian guy is this being a normal and sociable person
bomb the ucm
it's impossible for the spring to not be my favorite station, i'm about to cry over how nice this day is
i mean. overall it was a good day. but my memories of it get a bit tainted by the sequel (yes there is a sequel). anyways, let's go with the fun context.
so, yes i did (kinda) have a job interview that day. they haven't called me since so i guess that didn't work out. i had a 1 hour 30 mins trip on public transport to get there so that's why i woke up so early (the interview was at 9:30 i think?). i managed to get there only cause as i got back home to wait for my mum to wake up i got the notification that she had sent me 50 € to my bank account for that day. so i went out again, got to the tram station, recharged my transport card, and then got there. in the end the interview was delayed so whatever but yeah. nothing remarkable there apart from that argentinian guy i chatted with!! like a normal human!!!
anyways, after that i had to go to the ucm (told you i was gonna go there later in the month) because. you guessed it: the ucm predoc. i'm not gonna bore you with the details, but basically i had everything done and filled up, i just needed to sign and sent it to the entity. i couldn't do it online so - after calling and not receiving any answers - i printed everything, signed everything by hand and decided to deliver it in the registry office.
that's what i did, after the registry guy told me i should call the people who were in charge of all that process and calling - i shit you not - 6 different numbers until i got their approval. so that means it was done right? i've finished the process??? right???? lol. we'll come to that in the sequel <3
but yeah, the day was nice, it was super spring-y, and it's always great to go outside of the house so i liked it :)
23. i lost my mind over this tweet specifically
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i don't know how to explain how important this picture is to me. like. it's identical to my favourite phrase in the whole world that appears in seneca's mede: medea superest. 'medea remains'. same idea as that sign. i'm gonna combust.
NO WAIT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. the context of 'medea superest' is that the wet nurse is telling medea that she's alone in the world and she answers with that. because despite everything, she still has herself.
despite everything, it's still you.
24. i found my favourite twitter account <3
Tumblr media
feliç dijous is 'happy thursday' in catalan btw
25. i listened to all esc 2023 songs and here's my top!!
Tumblr media
i hit pic limit so i'll continue this in a part 2 (there's not much left i promise)

“fight by your side” vs “i will lay my life down for you” // the diamant-sertation series
my partner (@asylumdream) said, “so, you’re writing a diamant-sertation“ when i said i was “writing another diamant dissertation“ since talking about engage localisation funnies triggered this conversation.
@successeurdiamant i’m gonna move the convo over here since this might be a long post and i’d rather not clog a post with character dissertations, lmao (any other ppl in the diamant tumblr zone do feel free to add onto this post too, though! the more the merrier!)
“fight by your side“ and “i will lay my life down for you“ both have two distinct feelings and i love them both because of both of the feelings they convey and how they both relate to diamant’s character.
to my personal taste, i really love “i will lay my life down for you“ mainly because it plays on his sense of devotion and how he’s hellbent on giving all of himself to his country, to ending the way, to alear... because he would, and he does. i wouldn’t know about how his character behaves specifically in the jp version (since i don’t speak japanese, and from what it sounds like is that he’s still relatively the same, if not tonally different because of line changes), but we know that he is a perfectionist and holds a lot of guilt based on if you let him or alcryst kill morion.
what kind of brother is he to let his brother fill in for his weakness? what kind of son kills his father? alcryst outright says that it’s a burden that is too heavy for him to bear (so he shall do it instead), but imagine how heavy the other burden is, to be helpless in helping the ones you hold most dear? he’s still his brother’s brother, after all. alcryst also states in ch15 that he’s worried for diamant’s mental state because he keep bottling his emotions.
diamant... there’s some (a lot of) brodian stubbornness in there. it’s the sheer devotion, come hell or high water, in sickness and in heath, and all of that- it’s his need to see everything through. what kind of king is he is he does not? he wants peace, and he’ll devote himself to that peace. he wants the one he loves to be safe, so he’ll devote himself to that, too. (this kind of devotion is actually what’s all over alear and marth’s dynamic. there is so much subtextual devotion from one to the other, it hurts. marth was, in fact, the one watching over alear the entire time, after all. but i digress; this is a diamant/dialear post, not a marth/alear post)
the thing is, though, it’s not exactly his life to give, now is it? his life, first and foremost, must prioritise his people above all. he has to be the the pillar of strength and the perfect, flawless diamond that everyone perceives him as. there’s his relationship with ivy and how brodia has hurt elusia over, and over, and over again and how elusians are taught to be scared of brodian armour. he’s the one only one that can make it right. that’s his job as king, after all. his life for his people. always.
in fact, perhaps giving his life to one person, the person he loves most, is a reclamation of his life. he cannot give his life to one person, for his kingdom mandates him to give himself wholly to the greater good. but perhaps, in another life, he could do so without fear of flaw or failure.
as an aside: now’s the perfect time to plug in and propose “shinunoga e-wa“ for diamant and alear’s relationship (i’d talked about it a little here but nothing in depth) because doesn’t “i want you to be my end. if it meant saying goodbye to you, i’d rather die“. fujii kaze has also said that the lyrics are on the old fashioned side, and historically, when “i love you“ gets translated from other languages into japanese, some equivalent similar to “i could die for you“ or “the moon is beautiful because of you“ is used because of the cultural context behind it. (i cannot believe this has come back to grace me with its presence.)
now... after some mulling it over, “i’ll fight by your side“ also carries a similar sort of intimacy... but different. it doesn’t have the same gravity that “i would lay my life on the line for you“ has, but it’s sweeter. softer. understanding that his life is not his to give and thus, he has no right to give it to someone whom of which it does not belong to (ironically, however, he gives his life to the state, but that’s out of duty and not out of emotional intimacy).
but this doesn’t make it bad. no, far from it, actually.
you see... “i’ll fight by your side“ very strongly reminds me of this confession:
“you are the wind at my back, and the sword at my side. together, my love, we shall build a peaceful world, just you and me.“
sound familiar? it’s chrom’s s-support cg dialogue, and i think it conveys the same exact thing that diamant tries to convey in his english s support. chrom has always viewed robin as his equal, and in terns of feh canon, his “other half“ (no, i’m not lying about that. chrobin is practically canon confirmed, especially with its inclusion of chrom and robin as the emblem of bonds). he loves robin- platonically, romantically, or even a secret third thing. friends are not lesser than romantic partners, after all.
but diamant... diamant views alear as close, just as close. maybe not as an equal like chrom and robin (who is he to consider the divine one an equal? he’s just the king of brodia, and alear is the monarch dragon of lythos. they’re god, effectively. to be equal to a god... or to drag a god down to his standing... it doesn’t sit well with him), but definitely with the level of understanding that goes beyond a commander and a subordinate, or a king and a god. they’re friends. they love each other, romantically, platonically, or even a secret third thing.

Herodotus and the Origins of Political Philosophy
Tumblr media
Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Engelska Parken, 7-0042, Thunbergsvägen 3H, Uppsala, Monday, 3 September 2018 at 14:00 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Docent Elton Barker (Open University).
Abstract
Linderborg, O. H. 2018. Herodotus and the Origins of Political Philosophy. The Beginnings of Western Thought from the Viewpoint of its Impending End. 224 pp. Uppsala: Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University. ISBN 978-91-506-2703-9.
This investigation proposes a historical theory of the origins of political philosophy. It is assumed that political philosophy was made possible by a new form of political thinking commencing with the inauguration of the first direct democracies in Ancient Greece. The pristine turn from elite rule to rule of the people – or to δημοκρατία, a term coined after the event – brought with it the first ever political theory, wherein fundamentally different societal orders, or different principles of societal rule, could be argumentatively compared. The inauguration of this alternative-envisioning “secular” political theory is equaled with the beginnings of classical political theory and explained as the outcome of the conjoining of a new form of constitutionalized political thought (cratistic thinking) and a new emphasis brought to the inner consistency of normative reasoning (‘internal critique’). The original form of political philosophy, Classical Political Philosophy, originated when a political thought launched, wherein non-divinely sanctioned visions of transcendence of the prevailing rule, as well as of the full range of alternatives disclosed by Classical Political Theory, first began to be envisioned. Each of the hypotheses forming the theory – the hypotheses concerning the Ancient Greek beginnings of a “secular”-autonomous political rationale, political theory and political philosophy – is weighed against central evidence provided by the Histories of Herodotus. The passages thus given new interpretations are the Deioces episode in Book I, the Constitutional Debate in Book III and Xerxes’ War Councils in Book VII. Aside from the Herodotean evidence, a range of other relevant Greek literary sources from the archaic and classical ages – e.g. passages from Homer, Hesiod, several pre-Socratic thinkers, Plato and Aristotle – are duly taken into consideration. Included is also a reading of the Mytilenean Debate of Thucydides’ Book III, which shows how the political thought of the classical democracies worked in practice. Finally, the placing of the historical theory against a background of contemporary relevance provides an alternative to all text-oriented approaches not reckoning with the possibility of reaching historically plausible knowledge of real-world events and processes.
Keywords: Herodotus, Herodotean studies, origins of political philosophy, origins of political theory, early history of political thought, beginnings of Western civilization, contemporary social analysis, Sino-Hellenic studies

Jo, Kate, and their parallels with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth
Okay, so I know this may seem totally out there, but bear with me on this - I promise, I have a point, and I am really interested to hear your thoughts on these parallels.
So I just wrote this all out once only for tumblr to delete it as I was about to post, so like, yay for that. Also I’m on 4 hours sleep and very brain frazzled from recently submitting my dissertation, so apologies if there’s any nonsensical aspects. I will preface this with a note that I am by no means a Greek mythology expert, I just really love Hadestown and subsequently the Orpheus/Eurydice myth, and noticed there were some significant parallels between it and the Kate/Jo story which I wanted to draw.
For those not particularly familiar with the Orpheus/Eurydice myth, I’d give it a quick google, but I’ll be drawing comparisons between that story and Kate/Jo’s here.
Orpheus is a talented musician, whose musical gift was said to entrance even nature itself. In a slightly less mythical but no less impressive fashion, we have Kate, whose known proficiencies and dedication to the anticorruption cause, even after she leaves AC-12, make her stand out as an exceptional detective. Orpheus meets Eurydice and is instantly drawn to her beauty – she is drawn to his voice, and they soon fall in love. It is not Kate’s voice that draws in Jo, but the promise of freedom she offers with her anticorruption background that initially draws her in – we know from 6x06 that that is why Jo initially hired her. With Jo, I think Kate finds a kindred spirit (plus, who are we kidding, Kelly is bloody beautiful) to whom she connects with and is drawn to. Much like Orpheus and Eurydice, who seem almost magnetised in how they are drawn to one another, I think there are definitely some parallels in how Kate and Jo are drawn to one another and the chemistry they share, despite coming from very opposing backgrounds (Jo as the coerced daughter of an OCG boss, forced to do their bidding in secret VS one of the most dedicated (ex-)anticorruption officers)
Orpheus and Eurydice decide to marry, and have a brief moment of wedded bliss before everything goes downhill. Whilst I’d love a flemson wedding, I can’t see that in the near future, nor is it relevant for the parallels being drawn – I would instead draw attention to their Frederico’s date, the intimacy shared there, and the proposed weekend date, where they existed in a bit of a honeymoon state of excitement surrounding this somewhat illicit close connection.
Of course, this can’t last. Aristaeus’ love for Eurydice, and jealousy of Orpheus, drives him to chase the pair down, intending to kill Orpheus and take Eurydice for his own. Aristaeus is more of a metaphor for the OCG controlling Jo, rather than any one individual – by Jo getting close to Kate, it threatens the OCG’s concealment, and thus Kate must be eliminated so they can regain control over Jo. As Eurydice and Orpheus run to escape the OCG, a clear parallel could be drawn with the man-hunt of 6x06.
Eurydice stumbles and falls, and as Orpheus turns he sees she has been bitten by a deadly viper, and has died. Whilst Jo does not literally die at this point in the story, her imprisonment could represent a metaphorical death – she is no longer able to act freely alongside Kate, her relationship with Kate is irrevocably changed after the whole murder attempt fiasco, and Kate will struggle to get through to Jo even more than before now she is in jail – and, as the viewers are well aware, in the jail with the two dodgy prison officers who pose a clear threat to her.
At this point, Orpheus, driven by grief, appeals to his father, the God Apollo, to permit him to go to the underworld and seek his wife from Hades, in a somewhat hair-brained but brilliant scheme. We are yet to see this play out in 6x07, but the trailer appears to suggest some kind of attempt to get Jo out of prison, for which AC-12 become involved – specifically, Kate. I anticipate that, despite the murder attempt, Kate will be deeply affected by Jos imprisonment, and likely will be part of the driving force to prove she isn’t bent – like she has been, all series, in spite of all the proof staring her in the face. I imagine Kate will be prepared to put herself in a dangerous position within this, fully aware of the Lakewell incident, to help save Jo – and I wouldn’t be surprised if she is the one to suggest or somehow initiate this operation. The crazy part of it comes from the fact they are well aware of what happened to Lakewell, and are likely having to develop some sort of crazy plan to try and get around that – quite possibly, intentionally drawing out the OCG in the process.
Orpheus approaches Hades, asking for entry into the underworld, for which he receives no challenges. When he approaches Hades and Persephone, he sings to them of his desire for Eurydice to be returned to them, and convinces Hades to return Eurydice. However, there is a condition – he must walk back towards the world of the living, and she must follow him, and he cannot look back, or else she will be trapped in the underworld forever and he will be unable to reach her. Essentially, Orpheus must trust that Eurydice will be following behind him, will have chosen to return with him to the land of the living. Eurydice is demonstrating her faith in him by allowing him to lead her out of the underworld. This aspect of the story is highly speculative, as 6x07 is currently yet to air – but Kate has to place some trust in Jo, that she will follow through with their plan, that she won’t betray her again. Jo had demonstrated some basis for being trusted, with placing her prints on Kate’s gun and taking the fall for her in. 6x06, but now it is imperative that Kate trusts Jo to follow through – likely on providing information – so Kate can free her from her past OCG ties, hopefully in some kind of witness protection as opposed to jail.
But the story of Orpheus and Eurydice is a tragic love story. Orpheus, having reached the light himself, turns to look upon his wife. In doing so, he seals her fate – she is trapped in the underworld forever. How this translates to the story of Kate/Jo is unclear, but my speculation is that there is some incident where Kate’s trust in Jo briefly falters, which ultimately proves fatal to Jo – and it will turn out, Jo WAS trustworthy all along, but Kate’s hesitancy to believe in Jo (understandably so) was the tragic flaw in their relationship, particularly as up to that point they had implicitly trusted one another. Orpheus has a brief moment where he sees Eurydice before she is returned to the underworld – for Kate and Jo, I imagine this will be a moment of “I was never pretending” style confessions before Jo’s tragic end.
Orpheus is heart-broken by the incident, losing the joy that had previously characterised his music. Kate’s music, in this case, is her faith within the anticorruption cause. Whilst I don’t think she will lose it entirely, I think she will become a lot more cynical and unconvinced regarding its success, particularly as they were so close to saving Jo before they lost her, to what in Kate’s eyes was her own struggles with trusting Jo would follow her into the light (ie. freedom from the OCG). But Jo was following her the whole time.
The comparison between Jo/Kate and Orpheus/Eurydice highlight how Jo/Kate’s story, at its heart, is a tragic love story – obviously, dependent on the outcome of 6x07, which could render this completely obsolete. But I just thought the parallels were really interesting, and I would love to hear others thoughts on this. (I will say, my initial post of this was much more in depth, but tumblr decided to delete it, so I rewrote it from memory as best I could). Obviously, it is entirely possible this is all coincidental, and that I am just simply drawing from my love for Hadestown and projecting it upon one of my other favourite shows. However, if Jed DID intend to have some loose parallels, that is really interesting and very telling to how Jo/Kate’s relationship was intended to be perceived. Plus, it’s pretty fucking poetic too.
Anyway, I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this, so please let me know! I apologise if this reads as rushed or messy or anything, it was just an idea bouncing in my head this morning, and I really wanted to see what people thought!
