Leekon - “Tricut” Nummer Drie 2000 IDM

I don’t really have much of an idea as to who Leekon is. All I know is that he’s an IDM artist from Hamburg, Germany whose first release came in 1999 as half of the duo Swap. Leekon has never made a solo release. His only solo track, “Tricut,” which was released in 2000, has appeared on a couple IDM compilations and a DJ mix. One of those IDM compilations is Nummer Drie, released by Rotterdam label Djak-Up-Bitch aka DUB.

This is one of those songs that makes you wonder why Leekon hasn’t released more music. “Tricut” is an introspective trip that mixes glitchy, mechanical, and distorted IDM clicks, cuts, and grainy static with a synth melody that reflects a feeling of deep melancholy. This track never seems to stay in one place as its complex, underlying rhythms, from its drums to its wide range of IDM sounds, remain ever-changing. And while the melody never alters its tone, it too, is unpredictable.

Fantastic German IDM from the early 2000s. The only song that Leekon has inexplicably ever released as a solo artist.

Clean, melodic IDM and electro crossover courtesy of Octogen, an alias of electro producer Marco Bernardi. It’s right at home on the DUB label, which enjoyed a strong run of IDM and melodic electro releases in the late 90s and early 00s before taking a long break. The label has recently revamped to release music from Versalife, Kettel, and Aleksi Perälä.
