Re-breaking the Tumblr Ice with a "25 Games To Know Me" post!
Reasons why each game is important to me are under the cut.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 -- I love Sonic in general. I think across the entire history of the franchise I can only really point to two games I dislike, or three if I'm feeling particularly uncharitable. But Sonic 2 was the first game I ever saw at a store and said "I want that one". As for how I feel about Sonic 2 itself, it's actually not my favorite Sonic game or even my favorite classic Sonic game--those distinctions go to Sonic Unleashed and Sonic CD--but without Sonic 2, I may never have given the blue hog a chance.
Spark The Electric Jester 3 -- The most recent game on this list certainly but it deserves to be there. It's so confident and unashamed of what it is. It *knows* it's a Sonic fan game underneath its yellow blorbo skin, but it never winks at the audience about it. You just get to do some really incredible, high speed 3D platforming and mix in some DMC-lite combos in there too. It's good, it's fun, it's sincere, it's beautiful. All the Spark games are.
Cave Story -- Before Cave Story I only had a vague idea of the concept of "single person makes game all by themself". I'd certainly played plenty before, from the Shareware era on DOS and Windows 95, but Cave Story made it feel approachable. Plus, on its own, it's just a great little game.
La Mulana -- Cave Story and La Mulana share the same space in my brain. It may be a little weird to say this, but I typically don't enjoy 2D Metroidvanias. The only ones I've beaten are Super Metroid and most recently Nine Sols. But something about La Mulana just tickles me. It feels like the entire map is one big Rubik's Cube I'm beating my head against, which is more satisfying to me than "I found the thing that lets me do the thing I couldn't do earlier."
DOOM (2016) -- I love the entire Doom franchise but DOOM 2016 is my favorite standalone experience. Otherwise I have played untold hours of classic Doom mods, my favorites being Reelism, Demonsteele, and Doom Infinite.
Sekiro -- A really great experience all around. I enjoy Dark Souls and appreciate its storytelling, but most everything in Dark Souls feels too distant for me to appreciate, whereas in Sekiro, the history both is recent and ongoing, and the Shinto and Buddhist mythology informs the story in real time. And It's just so fun to actually play. You never forget your first Lady Butterfly.
Dynamite Headdy -- Most everyone loves Treasure but to me no game is more Treasure than this one.
Moon: Remix RPG Adventure -- One of the earliest plays on the RPG genre. A typical RPG hero is going around slaying monsters to level up, but that person isn't you. Instead, you go around reuniting the souls of slain monsters to revive them, and learn a lot about the heartfelt and unique world they once inhabited. A really beautiful and important game.
Worms Armageddon -- Still the best 1999
Avernum: Escape From The Pit -- A remake of Spiderweb Software's first game in the "Exile" series. Avernum tells a great fantasy story about an underground cave society, where undesirables are exiled by the empire who scorns them. Instead of laying down and dying in the caves, its new residents name it Avernum and create their own society... and they don't intend to take their punishment laying down. A really fun and atmospheric CRPG with great, Vonnegut-esque writing and a lot of heart.
Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver -- I played this one pretty recently and was shocked at how forward thinking it was for 1999. I played the entire Legacy of Kain series back to back, but Soul Reaver stuck out to me as the best one. If you can't tell by some of the other games on this list, I adore games that feel lonely and isolating but still have a distinct goal and stakes. Soul Reaver is incredible and finally contextualized just why I saw Raziel all over Playstation magazines as a kid--it's because he's fucking cool!
Marathon Infinity -- play the entire marathon series right now stop reading this
Lemmings -- Huh. What's that doing here
Pikmin -- The first Pikmin is the best one in my opinion. I love the time limit, I love the simplicity of the scope compared to the rest of the series, it's a fun game to just pop in once in a while and just blitz through. I also just love microworld settings. And the creature design! And the puzzle design! Ohh Pikmin there's nothing like you.
Klonoa: The Door To Phantomile -- I have a lot of fond memories of this one, but specifically of playing the demo over and over on a Playstation Magazine demo disc with my sister. I wouldn't actually play the full game until much later, on an emulator. I did later rent Klonoa 2 and finish it before that though. Klonoa is good.
Rayman -- I love this game. I love how fucking mean it is while looking so bright and poppy and silly. I first played it when I was like 8 years old and it was a really humbling, eye-opening experience. But jokes aside it's just a really good game. But yeah, it's hard. If you've never played it before and don't want to tear your hair out, you should play Rayman Redemption, a fan remake of it that makes it a bit more approachable. If you ask me though, you should try the original first.
Ecco: The Tides of Time -- I also played this one when I was really young and it was also a humbling, eye-opening experience. I just liked dolphins, I wasn't expecting to have rented the hardest game in the entire fucking store. Having revisited the Ecco series many times since then, though, I think Tides of Time is the best one. It's just gorgeous and both versions of the soundtrack are amazing. I prefer the CD one though, except for Moray Abyss and Tubes of Medusa.
Splatterhouse -- Kids love horror and kids love forbidden things, so when I saw a Splatterhouse ROM on a romsite as a kid and was immediately told I wasn't allowed to download it, of course I fucking did when no one was looking. And my brain was altered forever
Earthbound -- I very briefly had a stepbrother who had a SNES and Earthbound and I wasn't able to play it myself (no open save slots) so I just watched, but I was fascinated by it. I would eventually play it myself later on good ol ZSNES. I have nice warm memories of watching the snow on the ZSNES menu while it snowed gently outside, in between bouts of playing Earthbound and Yoshi's Island.
Yakuza -- Okay the PS2 boxart is here as a stand in, I love the entire Yakuza series dearly. I did own Yakuza and Yakuza 2 when they were new, but lost them when our PS2 and all of its games got stolen.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 -- Another Sonic game? But this one's special. I've been playing SRB2 for over half of my life at this point. I've played countless mods for it and have watched it grow from a basic little Doom platformer into a great platform for expression. It's also just fun.
Bomberman 64 -- The 3D bomb-stacking and bouncing stuff in this game is so cool and is the exact kind of finicky, almost-accidental-seeming mechanical depth I love in video games. I can't believe they only made one of these.
Psychonauts -- Kind of a stand-in for Double Fine and LucasArts in general, but definitely the best game still out of both companies. I love 3D platformers and I love what this game does. There's still not much out there like it.
Rayman 2 -- Another Rayman game? Well yeah, I can't say I love 3D platformers and just not put the best 3D platformer ever made on this list. Not an exaggeration!
Final Fantasy XIV -- I get to play as a hot lion woman now. Have you seen her? Well, now you have

The second module of my hand embroidery course is a complete disappointment. It's a module on design, which is theoretically fun and useful if you want to come up with your own embroidery patterns, but what they actually provide is next to useless.
There's a bit about the basics of colour theory and the use of line and texture in design where they provide half a page of writing (or less because pictures) on each and then tell you to read wikipedia. No, seriously, the sections on colour theory and lines have list of links to go read and the first one in both sections is a link to wikipedia. There are some other links to art galleries and to a section on the BBC website about home design. It's like they put the bare minimum information together and then point the students at the internet if they want to actually learn anything - how is this a course worth paying money for?
Plus one of the links is broken.
There's nothing that would actually put things into context for embroidery - e.g. how different fabric choices impact texture, ways of achieving different line/texture effects with stitches, tips for selecting colour threads from a DMC chart to achieve colour effects, how different choices of fabric colour might influence your choice of thread colours, ideas for achieving perspective impressions using thread thickness. Lots of things that might make any of the first section relevant to the subject matter we're supposed to be learning - and then don't touch on any of them.
The rest of the module is about taking photos and manipulating them in PowerPoint/tracing over them on paper to get little snippets of the image to then turn into abstract designs.
I guess I can see that some people might like this approach as a way to come up with abstract designs - but I'm not one of them.
I would be absolutely find if this was one of a list of ten different ways you could come up with designs and then they talked about other approaches e.g. turning a photo into a cross stitch pattern through software, drafting a design with paper and pencil freehand, cutting shapes out of paper and moving them around a space to see how you like the arrangement, etc. If they gave us this as one approach of several, it would be one thing, but when most of the module is "here's how the crop button and remove background features work in PowerPoint", I'm going to be annoyed.
I paid money for this and it feels like the half-assed, minimum effort rubbish I would expect to get if I bought a social media influence's self-created cash grab course on how to get rich.

this is so true, especially since sometimes "worth it" is a person to person thing
some things I've discovered under the cut though
ergonomic crochet hooks are absolutely worth it, I can crochet for 10x as long than the thin metal ones (plus they're available for like $15 for a whole set for a generic brand so not a huge upfront cost)
using size 28 gold plated cross stich needles is like pulling thread with my bare hands?? the needle ceases to exist or become an obstacle in any way (also I have a nickel allergy so my fingertips don't itch anymore)
plastic floss bobbins and a bobbin winder are so not worth the cost
fancy embroidery scissors are only worth it if you like how pretty they are. Any small pair of sewing needles that are new work fine. Get a knife sharpener and you're good for forever basically.
beeswax is so helpful
magnifying clip on glasses are so helpful, I don't know why I didn't get them sooner. Counting is 1000x easier
gridding thread is just . . . red fishing line. I probably won't purchase the brand name again, I'll just get it somewhere else for cheaper.
DMC really is worth the cost, or at least cotton, because the wool/acrylic blend I was using was Horrible it squeaked and generally just tangled a lot
a bigger seam ripper is great, I got one with an ergonomic handle and it helped a lot
you don't need expensive writing software to write novels, just stay away from word (it crashes for anything over 6k in my experience)
there's a lot of better notebooks out there than moleskin
compression gloves really do help but it can be a sensory nightmare so maybe start out with really cheap ones
a good desk lamp can make a huge difference for maintaining your vision
a bone folder (for origami) can be super helpful, you can get some in all sorts of shapes and sizes and it can definitely help prevent papercuts and finger nail pain
that's all I got, hopefully that's helpful for folks
with crafts, sometimes buying the specialized/higher quality tools and materials makes an unfathomable difference and sometimes it hardly matters at all and the problem is that there's not an easy way of determining which one it's gonna be

Get yourself a pleased shopping at Australia's cross stitch pattern
When we say art we need certainly to mention art within an identical verse. Creativity, designs, patterns, embroidery and poetry and truths are a few. Celts had been born tribes that were warriors and amazing way also. Celts left their footmarks around Europe mostly because they certainly were nomadic at soul and nature. If we read or know that our history well we will find that there has never become a tribe that is more famous warring futility. That their art remains living is evidence of their longevity. Yet another fantastic instance with this is we still have myths, steel cravings, and knot works; human anatomy operates are artwork layouts to remind us.They were purely nomads could be understood from the simple fact that they inhabited are as from Britain, Ireland, Spain, into regions like Italy, Turkey and Bohemia. That is the ordinary ground the reason people find that French, Spanish, English, Irish and Italians mostly have Celtic layout into their needleworktattoos tattoos, drapery together with jewellery.Cross design pattern is just actually a quite basic yet classy fashion of creating embroidery. Now we understand that cross stitch is an obsolete pattern yet it is so famous because it had been in prehistoric times. The cross design pattern is more widely common while becoming one of the most cherished form as well. What we would enjoy is the heavy colors and bright ones mixed thus giving splendor of color coded with layouts which make the last result an visual cure next to none. The principal the heart of celtic cross stitch patterns is classically over cut layouts with design patterns, spiral, inter-weaving designs, knot mechanics, animal strains, alphabets together side zoomorphic patterns.Celtic cross stitch sewing is mostly an art that we have inculcated due to the Scott's, Minx along with Irish. These complex layouts are widely put in usage by people in every day life, be it at pillow protect, tablemats the enjoys warm cozies to drape pallets decoration. And these patterns are available easily all over the world, only search the net or see the nearest bookstore in which design layouts are there in novels , design yourself kits along with art guides. Unlike other causal embroideries, Cross stitch weaving will be much better to learn. You will find several types that jelqing Celtic cross stitch patterns but exactly what you would most relish is currently trying to craft a Cross design drawings. You may start having a blueprint leading way up into the ones. Once started you will probably have the ability to produce some magnificent décor craft things for-you home.So if at any time you feel that Polynesian cross stitch design has transferred you enough to carry it up as a pastime or fire then I would advise you to usually do not spend your time at opening a style blueprint of you choice. You can start with modest layouts onto a bit cloth and then slowly if only a tad bit more confident you'll be able to cause some thing specific for yourself or for present purpose.Celtic cross stitch patterns aren't restricted by few matters you can explore with making armbands using Alphabets, and headgear sporting animal patterns. Kits are available with complete accessories like ribbons and needles along with other stuff to create the pattern.Choices are made of aplenty, some kits possess frames while some others come sans a framework, when you would want to buy. Need not go to a shop, as home deliveries really are a real benefit. Now that you would like to begin off I really would like you best of luck in this venture. If you are an avid cross stitcher then your odds are that at any point you will probably need a blueprint you could not find. Within cases like this a proven manner you may overcome this dilemma is by simply using cross legged pattern by drawing on the blueprint yourself. Regrettably there will also be disadvantages to cross stitch pattern making applications and we'll consider both the advantages and disadvantages in this article. In the past cross stitch patterns were regularly made using pencils and chart paper. This was time intensive and tedious job plus yet one that I'm sure few people nowadays would enjoy. Fortunately cross stitch design manufacturing software has speeded up the process which makes it feasible to produce your own personal cross stitch patterns a ton quicker and more easily. What I've noticed when utilizing cross legged design making software is the fact that should you're scanning an image in your pc afterward you will frequently need to be sure alterations to the colours to get it done only perfect. In addition, I like to use colors that are less as I think it is becomes complicated when using as many colors as the picture could commonly come out at. Even though these alterations could become time consuming that they are nothing in comparison to needing to draw it all out on graph paper. The most greatest advantage of cross border design making software could be that your flexibility that it offers to develop any pattern that you prefer to make. You may use any graphic or possibly draw out anything that comes into your mind and transform into a cross stitch design and you also don't need to be restricted to the patterns that can be found the market.Cross sew design making software is just a good device for any avid cross stitcher and enables one to make an extensive range of cross stitch layouts yourself. You might need to earn some alterations or require a small additional time however in the long run this will probably be worth it.Who uses graphs and counted cross stitch designs? Anyone who desires them, however you will find a number of applications for these patterns. Free cross stitch patterns are often . Some people utilize the patterns merge and to incorporate them together with different patterns and motifs to build a brand-new pattern strategy. These customized patterns can subsequently either used for private use or are advertised and marketed with a fresh title or title.A developer that focuses on free crossstitch designs is Connie G. Barwick who gifts patterns to the general community for individual use only. Also, a website named Better cross-stitch Patterns.com offers great nice, unique totally free layouts. The air is very favorable , plus so they go out of the way to create a stitcher feel in home.Large companies like DMC and several more provide patterns free of charge in their web sites to both newbies and professional stitchers. Their patterns include floral patterns lettering graphs and animal graphs. The free patterns function as an effective approach to get you in their site, download the free pattern(s), and then they are trusting you might observe different goodies you simply cannot live without which leads for the expected purchase. While several businesses have become special about your usage of the routines saying they are for private use only, the others allow one to download the totally free pattern, stitch it, and then sell the completed stitched project for your profit as long as you make the proper attribution to owner by giving a link back to owner's web site. Yet, these of you who down load those completely free patterns are discouraged from re selling the authentic totally absolutely free routine itself.People who mix legged and use completely absolutely totally free patterns also prefer to trade and switch back and forth with different stitchers on cross stitch website sites, thus developing a system of layouts that can end up with exciting variations (in hues ) according to how imaginative you are.As much as creating belongs, you can find sites on the market like Cyberstitchers.com who have free chart document that you publish off for use in developing your own layouts. Software such as PatternMaker offers a library of motifs for used in developing and creating a custom made pattern. Embroideryall across the world is thought of being a parcel of tradition. This heritage has been with us. As a talent is indeed obsolete that none people can pinpoint the accuracy of its ancientness. Since time of our mothers, grand mothers and their ancestors have followed that particular art, despite the planet be-ing poles apart.Where we live will not produce a gap most of us were introduced to embroidery as cross legged embroidery. That is since it's very simple to master. It requires the most common of supplies. So how much I go ga ga more than celtic cross legged it's going to be modest because I love its own patterns.Cross sew just isn't with no opinions of various cultures and tribes and areas. Styles of cross stitch really are a excellent mix of some primitive, cultural, contemporary and contemporary versions. While a few patterns are clear other too have their own impressions. Like Victorian cross lace is admired for its classic designs, African American stitch is famous for his or her ethnicity and Celtic due to his or her intricacy.Celtic Crochet lace is a early form of embroidery. Its patterns are properly known the diversity of its patterns are something that we can take pride in. That the impressions of their art understood no more boundaries, Due to the fact Celts have been nomads so. These routines can be seen on possibly every possession of theirs. On their possessions the motifs and design work had minute details that a job could well be a masterpiece inside our life. Cross stitch designs utilized by Celts had impressions of the day-to-day life styles. Designs like blossoms animals, styles, alphabets and a lot more. They didn't only stop with making patterns together with embroideries, even they were found of those patterns which their swords, utensils walls and walls could float with this kind of patterns. All of you would now be asking about the ways to find them gorgeous and distinctive routines. 25 odd years back I wouldn't have been at a position. But today I am blessed enough to have enough knowledge about this art to have the ability to share it with you.Simply see your nearest store or art and craft vendor to get yourself that nice Celtic cross stitch design apparel. Then you could find one in a bookshop if you are not successful on your effort to locate an crafts shop nearby. And only in case that you do not want to dispose with the relaxation of your house with this purpose I could help you here too.You can easily place an on-line order requesting your apparel. Consider locating patterns that are absolutely totally free on the Internet while in the event that you wouldn't like to spend a dime onto the blueprint. There are a lot of sites which offer these layouts. Make your decisions depending up on your own ability. I sincerely hope I have left no rock unturned you do not take up cross legged embroidery. I am hoping that I don't need to drive one. To receive supplementary information on this please see additional info. Cross-stitching is extremely comforting and concentrating pastime. Once you see your job transform in one stitch for the whole 22, the procedure for stitching could increase your spirits. And select your future work and it is leaving to check through patterns. You may find different patterns and fashions. You can produce a really big images of fine smaller pictures which you are able to hang over your own place or give them as a gift to your family and pals or all tiles. But is Cross Stitch Patterns consistently were exactly the exact same as now?Cross Stitching leaves to get a time also it shifted through out many years. Years ago girls commenced cross stitching as young as 5 years of age and did all their lifetime to it. Nevertheless, it was not just a spare time activity at that time for them. They stitched maybe not merely for their home however also they cross sew their garments to show everyone else how they mastered this particular craft. There have been days when girls throughout the village revealed in garments people may decide on which one were the optimal/optimally venture and that they stitched. Sometimes boys chose that a girls to check throughout her job. Thus stitching plaid a big role in ladies life. There ended up a lot of cross stitch designs and layouts from old occasions . however, it wasn't only a typical patterns, all of patterns had any significance and for different intention people built different designs. As an example, weddings always were more rich in cross legged designs which express fantasies of happy and very long existence for newly-married. Patterns at different places had various meanings but usually old layouts included a great deal of critters (represents independence and beauty at certain states ), bushes and sunlight (normally reflect fertility), houses and ships (at certain cultures reflect riches ). Some times that routines had been pretty easy to produce although not pointless. It means when our ancestors dressed man a fabrics they can state this man washow old and how rich he/she was, what position in culture he/she has, just how prudent he/she was and so on. Would you think about exactly how every big or small party persons dressed up in a excellent fabrics with stitching from top to bottom and using this stitching you're able to readily emptied out exactly what afternoon they observe, exactly what they stand for and that they are.Cross Stitching comes with a good heritage and a number of individuals still discover that it's exciting to make older style designs. Of this layouts look classic. But if you understand the route of each and every crossstitch Pattern work won't be only a craft, it will be an email for everyone.

SILKYPIX Developer Studio Pro 11 turns your Digital Camera RAW files into great images offering a handy set of tools for convenient RAW developing.
#SILKYPIX JPEG PHOTOGRAPHY 3.0 PROFESSIONAL#
SILKYPIX corresponds to more than 700 different models digital camera and are supported from professional photographers and shutter bugs. Alternatively if you want to skip straight to results taken in a more controlled environment, head on to our Panasonic LX3 Studio Resolution page.SILKYPIX is “RAW development software” that generates a high-resolution picture from the RAW data of a digital camera and offers accurate color from shadows through to highlights. Speaking of which, you can see a comparison of this same scene taken in RAW at the bottom of this page. The LX3’s images can also benefit from adjustments to the in-camera processing, or of course by shooting in RAW and processing later.
#SILKYPIX JPEG PHOTOGRAPHY 3.0 ISO#
Results like these prove a decent quality compact at its lowest sensitivity can deliver superior results to a DSLR when coupled with a budget lens.īut back to the compacts, where we’d say the Canon G9 delivers preferable results to the LX3 at 80 ISO (so long as you watch for blown highlights), but you may be surprised to see what happens when the sensitivity is increased. But as we’ve seen before, the kit lens is really letting the side down here, delivering a disappointingly soft result in some areas, particular in the third row, taken from the lower right corner. This is particularly apparent in the final row of crops.Īs for the Canon 450D / XSi, its default image processing (like most DSLRs) is more restrained than even an enthusiast’s compact, so side by side, its results look relatively flat. Punchier image processing by default is undoubtedly a factor in the G9’s crisper output, but it also has a sharp lens which, with its two extra Megapixels, is definitely resolving visibly greater detail overall. The LX3’s crops do however look slightly dull compared to the Canon G9, and there’s also optical softness in the crop of the mountain ridge from the top left corner. That’s certainly been a wise decision here as in the first row of crops, the Canon G9’s brighter exposure has resulted in blown highlights. The crops are taken from the upper left, center, lower right and lower left portions of the originals and presented here at 100%.įirst things first: as you’ll see here and on our Gallery page, the Lumix LX3 tends to err on underexposure, presumably to protect highlight areas from saturation. The image left was taken with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 at 7mm f4 and with a sensitivity of 80 ISO the original JPEG measured 4.19MB. The lenses on each camera were adjusted to deliver the same vertical field of view. To compare real-life performance we shot the same scene with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, Canon PowerShot G9 and Canon EOS 450D / XSi within a few moments of each other using their Program modes, best quality JPEG and lowest ISO settings. Support this site by price checking below Outdoor resolution / Studio resolution / High ISO Noise Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 results continued… Now let’s look at the Lumix LX3’s resolution in a studio environment. As always, you may also achieve better results with alternative RAW development software. Some tweaking will definitely be required, but it’s worth it if you want to get the best from the LX3. Silkypix, like most RAW developers, offers a broad range of adjustments though, and it’s possible to match the in-camera JPEG style or improve on it. The RAW file processed in Silkypix with the default settings is much more refrained and appears fuzzy in comparison. The two samples below show significantly different approaches to image processing.

Below are 100% crops taken from the original JPEG file alongside the RAW version, processed with the supplied Silkypix Developer Studio 3.0SE software using its default settings.

We photographed the scene here in the Lumix LX3’s RAW plus Fine JPEG mode, allowing us to directly compare images created from exactly the same data. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 results : Outdoor resolution / Studio resolution / High ISO Noise

Let’s Make Up—Sunday Chats—4/22/18
So last week I had a Sunday Chats all written and done, and while writing the last two closing paragraphs, my web browser crashed and Tumblr, being the platform with apparently no fail safes at all, completely lost all of what I wrote. I was initially going to just rewrite it the next day or the following Wednesday (my next day off) but then life happened and to be perfectly honest I had what we call in the biz a godawful week, so it didn’t happen. I apologize, I took your questions and selfishly coveted my answers when you had taken your time to submit them, and I am very sorry for that.
To make up for it, this week I am answering all of last week’s questions IN ADDITION to the few I got for this week, so hopefully it’ll be jam packed. Luckily I didn’t have a big editorial thought-piece ready for last week, so for this week...
The 10 out of 10
So I’ve been playing God of War, as I’m sure many of you readers have been, and I’m delighted by it in so many wonderful ways. But I think the reviews definitely set an expectation that is really impossible to meet. I’m not treading new ground here, I think that’s safe to say (as is usually the case with my writing) but it’s just the thought I’ve had the most playing God of War.
I think you get this idea that it’s a series of incredibly brilliant moments that tie together beautifully, and while I think much of that is true, a lot of what you do in God of War is run around and fight dudes. As great as that is, I’ve only had maybe two big moments in my ten or so hours with it. But the quality of what I’ve seen so far just gets me excited to see what moments I have coming up, especially since at this point, I really have absolutely no idea what the hell is going to happen next.
What i think gets understated in such a masterful score is just the sheer volume of production value poured into every inch of a game. I think that’s something that’s hard to convey across an entire review, let alone just a score, but boy, there is just a ton of polish and excellence throughout the game, from the small animations, to how Kratos always grabs a cliff’s face and doesn’t clip through it.
It’s really excellently made, and I hope everyone out there is enjoying it as much as I am.
What’s on Tap
So I finished Kingdom Hearts 1
I re-beat this game again, finally going and doing all the additional content, like synthesis, extra bosses, grinding to level 100, etc.
I dunno... I think Kingdom Hearts is great but its “post-game” content is really underwhelming. I think none of the bosses are truly “special” in a way that they are in Kingdom Hearts 2. They don’t have these strategies seared into my mind, at least.
That being said, the design philosophy in KH1 versus its sequel is so completely different and fascinating. It’s far more Metroidvania in its intent to have you backtrack and re-explore already searched areas. It feels almost like it’s from a completely different franchise.
Like... There is ZERO platforming at all in Kingdom Hearts 2. Like, none. I can’t think of a section where you have to jump from a thing to a thing, except maybe the extra dungeon they added in the Final Mix version.
It makes me hopeful that maybe they’ll revisit some of these ideas in Kingdom Hearts 3 but eh. I doubt it.
Kingdom Hearts 2 on Critical
I started this and it’s about as frustrating as I anticipated. It’s not terrible or world ending, as its essentially just Proud mode difficulty with half your total health.
But I’m about to fight Xaldin in my playthrough so basically it’s all downhill from here.
God of War
So yes, I’ve been playing God of War. It is indeed, a video game.
I mean it’s really great. I talked about it a lot on last night’s podcast if you want some more detailed thoughts. But here are some standouts:
The combat is labored in a way that makes it so much more intense and significant. Of all the things that remind me of The Last of Us, it’s this aspect. It’s the intensity of each hit, the feeling of desperation in every slam and slash, and the violence that goes with it feels justified in the God of War universe where it absolutely never has before.
I get a ton of Darksiders vibes from this game, specifically Darksiders 2. The way it introduces side areas, side dungeons, side puzzles, and especially chests, reminds me a ton of how Darksiders approached formulaic Zelda ideas. It works very well here.
The Axe is, of course, excellent. But I’d say it isn’t the throw of the axe that works, it’s calling it back.
The ambient dialogue between your characters feels pulled straight out of a Naughty Dog game, and it feels so derivative of that that it makes me like it a bit less that I’d personally want to. It just feels almost exactly the same, just with different characters, and so far, outside of Kratos and how “deals” it dialogue, there isn’t enough separating it.
Overall very good. I will eventually be writing a review for IrrationalPassions.com. Look for it someday.
Questions
Remember to look for my tweet with the hashtag #SundayChats every Sunday afternoon, reply to it with your question, and boom. That’s how the magic happens.
Last week’s questions:
Ya know last week I’d have a different answer but I’ll revisit that later. In short: stuff is happening. I’m trying to live my life. Trying to do good. Failing a lot, but I’ll keep trying.
I’ve been crazy busy too. I feel like this is the year I am trying to teach myself different and new things, whether they be on a technical level, or maybe software, or something else along those lines.
Thank you for the kind words. As for the future, I think there is another question asking a bit of something like this, but it’s trying to stay busy and trying to make bigger and better moves. Like, E3 I think is out of the question, but PAX West isn’t, and aiming for something like that is really exciting and it gives us a lot of new options and opportunities. Plus, we’ve been trying to have actual meetings on the reg about what we’re doing and what ideas we have.
A big one that Scott White has been spearheading you’ll probably know more about by the end of this month, and there are some new shows and new styles of pieces I think we are all trying to do. As for me, I just want to get better with video stuff, with supporting the team, and with GA, as that’s my main new project.
I like milk. I drink milk, by itself, or in chocolate form, pretty regularly. I’ve been at a restaurant with friends and asked for a glass of milk and everyone laughed at me. I’ve since never done that.
Milk is good.
I mean the biggest one was assuredly The Messenger, which is like, my #1 most anticipated. But I was lucky that my team got to go out there and see stuff and present it to me with cool thoughts and perspectives on all of them. Like, Solo sounds super cool and I want to see more of it, and City of Brass wasn’t on my radar at all but seems really cool. Mike convinced me to see Omensight and that’s just a really rad new entry from a team I didn’t think had it in them.
I mean, I don’t even really know who Kid Rock is. I mean I know of him, but eh. I’ve never heard his music before a day in my life. I hear he is like, not good? Like, not a good person, not necessarily a bad musician. But I don’t want to assume. Is this libel? Am I getting black balled out of the industry right now?
Also you look hella cute Roger. So proud of you.
It absolutely was not. A big thing was I was planning on getting a 4K TV, and since I had the Xbox One X I was happy with just that and then the HDR that my original PS4 could reach. But there was a good deal and if I was already investing so much I wanted to get the most out of my TV. So I swear to god if a PS5 comes out next fall I’ll be pissed.
Brian. Nabeshin. Jackson. So I can know what it feels like to be the nicest dude in the world and also a great uncle.
It’s really sad. But also nice since I can be alone again. But also sad.
A bit of a mixed bag.
Pretty much anything in Final Fantasy 15 looks amazing and delicious. But that Beef Bowl in Persona 4... Man, I’ve had dreams about that Beef Bowl.
This week’s questions:
Shoutout to Brandon Gann, who is in ALL WEEK’S questions for Sunday Chats.
Yes, God of War is great. I think I got into it pretty well above, but yes, I really enjoy it. The combat, above all else, just feels so great. It reminds me a TON of DmC Devil May Cry in that it is training me well and I feel really good at it. Plus the way the weapons work kind of reminds me of that kind of combat too.
It absolutely has to be the SNES. I think I’ve lost countless hours to that system, and it’s something that, as a gift for me, I had my parents go and buy of eBay waaay past its time so as I could sit down and revisit all these classic games. Something I’m still incredibly appreciative of to this day.
But A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are just so formulative of my current taste in games and the things I seek out the most in video games (see: adventure and backtracking) and that was the console I sank the most time into without a doubt. I think GameBoy is totally a great choice, I didn’t have my own until I got a GameBoy color, but the GBA was the one I fell in love with the most, and I wouldn’t really get deep into that until much later.
Hey like, real talk everyone? Hey? Everyone bring it down, it’s real talk time?
Like, I’m doing suuuuper not good. Like actively very bad, and it’s just a whole lot going on. Last week is like, top three, top four worst weeks ever for me, and I had to make a whole bunch of adult decisions that, while I was prepared for them, I wasn’t happy about anything, and everything seemed to just make the situation more miserable. On top of that, I just feel like I’ve been really shitty and a shitty friend to basically all the people in my life that matter the most, and on top of that I have a lot of stress from work and money and blah.
Like, in the grand scheme of things, I’m doing okay, I’ll be okay, but I feel bad, it all feels bad, and it’s pretty shitty. Like, I know this probably wasn’t the answer expected, but it’s definitely the truth.
I’ll do better next time.
In my defense, it’s what I was doing up until I started writing this, and, while I do need to go do the dishes before I get back into God of War because lord knows no one else will, I’ll be continuing my adventure in Midgard until I pass out tonight.
I mean I feel really good about it, so long as everyone involved feels good. Like we’ve certainly hit a lot more readers and have broadened our audience in a way we’ve never been capable of before, and we have opportunities now that we’ve never had before, and I feel really good about that. I’m not super into the numbers, but I am into opportunity, ability to cover games pre-release, go to events, things like that.
As for the end of the year, I feel like, or at least I hope, there is a bit more cross pollination as far as skill, like more folks will be able to support Social, and more folks will be able to do video, or host shows, or whatever that may be. But I want that to all happen within comfort: like Social is Jurge’s thing, and if he doesn’t want to share that because of his ownership of it, I get that, I respect that, and I’m all about that. People gotta have their territory of expertise, and since I’ve been jack-of-all-trading it alone this whole time, I’m all about doing that for myself.
Even though I kind of already have and that’s editing.
The Ninja Samurai from Ghosts of Tsushima (upcoming, I know) and Sly Cooper, because I’m all about creating the greatest Ninja clan this side of the land of the rising sun.
That’s all I got for this week. Thank you all for your patience and understanding. I’ll do better next time. I will try and continue to do these more consistently. I love you all, thank you for reading and supporting and listening and being great.
Until next time, keep it real.

The Outer Worlds will be releasing on October 25th
youtube
Bleeding Edge
Ninja Theory, the studio known for character action games like Heavenly Sword, DmC: Devil May Cry and Hellblade, showed off their new multiplayer game. A technical alpha test will start on June 27th on the Xbox One. You can sign up here.
youtube
Ori And The Will Of The Wisp

youtube
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Hot of the heels of yesterday’s gameplay reveal, there’s a new trailer for Respawn’s single-player action game. Some new cinematics spliced with some gameplay seen from EA Play.
youtube
Blair Witch
A surprise announcement, this one. It’s a new first-person horror game based on the Blair Witch Project by Team Bloob, the makers of Layers Of Fear.
It will be out on August 30th on Xbox One and PC (Steam). It will also be on Xbox Game Pass on release.
youtube
Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt RED’s ambitious open world RPG gets a new cinematic and a release date, April 16th, 2020.
Also, we got Keanu Reeves in the game as Johnny Silverhand. And we got Keanu shouting “CYBERPUNK!” on stage to the cheer of the crowd.
youtube
Spiritfarer
Developed by Thunder Lotus Games, this sweet-looking 2D indie game is all about building, crafting boats, exploring and making friends. And set the friends free. These friends are lost spirits which you must take care of as your job as Stella, ferrymaster to the deceased.
It’s a sweet, and poignant game. That also includes 2-player co-op.
It will be out on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Switch. It will be on Xbox Game Pass on release.

Beat-em-up revival of Rare’s classic gets a full showing. Now with 80’s cartoon aesthetic. Just like the original arcade release, there is three-player couch co-op. No release date however, but confirmed to be on Xbox Game Pass on release.

It will be out later this year on PS4, PC and Xbox One.
Double Fine Joins Xbox Game Studios
They bought another one. Tim Schafer’s development studio joins the now the big family of Xbox Game Studios, now 14 studios strong. So we can safely expect another Psychonauts if the upcoming one is any good.
youtube
Psychonauts 2
New trailer focuses on the gameplay. Raz is in a suit. Combat and platforming should look familiar to the previous game (but hopefully better controls) and a look at the new villain.

youtube

Event Planner Travel Tips: Use a Destination Management Company, Fight Jet Lag, Travel With Top Airlines
While travel might be exciting, event planners know that it can be tough at times. Thankfully, there are ways to ease the burden of travel. For one, you can offload some of the work to a destination management company.
And to get the least stress from travel, make the most out of high-end lounges to fight jet lag while only traveling with the top airlines.
And we’re also here to help! Check out our free event planning checklist to make sure your next event runs smoothly and stress-free.
Wipe the Rust off Those Trade Show Tools
Training is an important part of exhibitions since they prepare your team throughout the off-season to deal with the rigors of the events themselves. It’s not just about dealing with the potential customers that walk in. It’s also about creating engaging setups with an emphasis on accessibility and coming up with memorable stories that leave lasting impressions. It even takes care of your staff’s welfare by suggesting shorter shifts! This guide goes back to the trade show basics that every event prof needs to be aware of.
How to Ace Your Corporate Events
Corporate event management entails the creation of a meticulous and realistic plan. Knowing where to start can be a difficult task. Of course, the obvious place would be setting relevant goals, which should span not just one event but the whole series of them. Those should also be in line with the company goals. Managing your contacts, from your audience to security, is also important. Of course, there are the various tools of promotion and the whole registration affair which needs to be as smooth as possible. Nailing the attendee experience and proving your ROI would take the limelight later on. Sounds like a handful? Don’t worry, this guide lists down all you need to know!

From Event to Experience
Must-go-to events are all over these days. The only way to ensure people won’t forget your events is to turn them into lasting experiences. This means getting them talking about the event long after it’s ended. You can achieve this by leveling up your souvenirs into conversation pieces. Within the event, you can also turn them into something truly meaningful, while ensuring your events come with the maximum level of engagement. All these would require a careful study of both your demographics and your event goals, while also taking advantage of the local landscape.
Are You Using “Destination Management Companies”?
Getting deep into the local landscape and adding local flavor is a sure way to give your attendees a unique experience. But what if you don’t know the area that well? That’s where Destination Management Companies (DMCs) come into play. Instead of taking precious time scouting the area, let these companies craft a seamless local experience that lets your event stand out. As a plus, these companies can get the cultural aspect perfectly, just what you need for an unforgettable experiential event. They could also assist in the creative side of your events, from designing team building activities to checking items off of attendees’ bucket lists!
The Myths of Tech Restaurant Events
Restaurants and events are intricately linked, given that most events require restaurant catering and restaurants get up to 30% of their revenues from events. This synergy between the two industries could greatly benefit from having dedicated teams that have relevant events software at their disposal. If you don’t think software and related tech should come into play, check out this list of myths that many event managers need to unlearn to adopt event technology.
Tips for Turning Sponsorships to Big-Time Partnerships
Sponsorships thrive by having each party add value to another’s plate. This relationship can be upped even further by thinking completely out of the box and crafting events that stay with the attendees for a really long time. This can range from intimate celebrity encounters to non-traditional brand experiences. Put your sponsors front and center and give them an opportunity for exposure they could only get at your event.
The only way to ensure people won’t forget your events is to turn them into lasting experiences. Click To Tweet
Thinking of Activation? Try Going Vintage.
Activation is all about making an impact and standing out from the get-go. In the case of the Silver Lining Design group, that meant going back in time and getting a fully-renovated 1963 Airstream trailer. Dubbed SilverStream, this mobile eyecatcher has been the venue of various activations. It has been customized into a food truck, photo booth, and even a cocktail bar. Because it’s modular and offers a high degree of customizability, it can be turned into anything you want so you can turn heads at your event. The fact that this vintage wonder is a true icon of style doesn’t hurt either.
Custom Hashtags and Community Building
Hashtags have taken over the Internet. It’s most commonly used as a means to connect people to a single topic or experience. Aside from letting you make your mark amidst a burgeoning audience, you can also use a custom hashtag to define and strengthen your community. This way, people seeking to interact with you and your event could easily find each other and initiate a lively conversation. It’s a way for true relationships to form among your audience. Remember, this is best used after you have grown your community using conventional hashtags. This serves not just as a venue for talk, it also helps spread experiences that will ultimately be part of your brand’s identity.
Lounges That Combat Jet Lag
These days, high-end lounges feature such amenities as spas, yoga studios, meditation tools, and much more. This is the airline industries response to the threat of jet lag plaguing business and first-class travelers. Airlines and Airports, Ranked

In the middle is Germany’s Lufthansa, which has also been noted for its “on air” event setups. Qatar also has the best international airport in Hamad, while Athens and Haneda (Tokyo) go second and third. In both airlines and airports, US entries fall behind. If you’re planning international events, take advantage of these top-of-the-line airports and airliners.
Ugh, jet lag. How do you cope with this uncomfortable feeling of being out of place and out of sync? Maybe you can share some personal hacks that help you fight jet lag in the comments.

Hands-on with ON1 Photo RAW 2018
From being an app to Photoshop to the full program ON1 Photo RAW 2018 now available, there has been a long road, and not an easy one. Despite all the problems, the future appears to smile to ON1 Photo RAW.
While the marketing from ON1 is busy on multiple fronts, including the presentation of a video, The ON1 Story, which the company hopes contributes to create the sense of a community and the idea that the program is made by photographers for photographers, users are downloading the released version, hoping that it will be everything ON1 promises. It may well be on the way to be that promise, but expect some bugs, still, as this is the start of a long road.
ON1 is firmly betting on the idea that ON1 Photo RAW is a great alternative to Adobe Lightroom (although the program continues to work, partially, as a plugin of both LR and PS), and the recent decision by Adobe regarding Lightroom may well help ON1 to make that true, although there are other competitors wanting to be the exact same thing. Suddenly the market is busy with multiple names, from Affinity Photo to Luminar or Topaz Studio, not to mention all the others.
This new version includes a series of updates and enhancements, some of which I’ve already mentioned in previous articles about the program. Now, with the final version available, I took the time to explore some of the features that interest me most, like panorama stitching, which was not available before and is now part of the menu. This means that if you’re interested in the creation of panoramas now you don’t need to use any external software to get your panoramas.
The panorama mode combines multiple photos into a single panoramic or matrix photo. It automatically aligns photos, even if they are not shot on a tripod (which is something I do most of the time), and blends them together seamlessly. An option to embed panoramic metadata for Facebook panning is also available. While I tried the feature during two of the previous betas, I took it all the way – bar the Facebook option – this time, to check if I could use ON1 Photo RAW 2018 to edit my panoramas.
The caterpillar image published here is a final example I chose, but I worked with different test series, some with up to 16 images, and the program works well, although, as expected, it will slow down the more images you give it to work with. This caterpillar photo (of a Papilio Machaon butterfly), which results from four images, gives me a final 12000x 4000 pixel image, offering all the detail needed for a high-quality print.
When you start the panorama mode a pop-up window warns you that the program is still being improved, and that it may have difficulty with some images, especially those taken in extreme conditions or, I would say, all the conditions that break the rules: changes in exposure or colours, due to the use of automatic exposure, use of wide-angle lenses and insufficient overlap. If ON1 gets the program to work with photographs taken under those conditions, then the panorama mode will be magic. As it is now, it seems to work efficiently.
This new version includes HDR, which I did not even bother to try, at least for this first hands-on, as it is not something I use. There are many other features, from Luminosity Mask updates to the new mask Density and Feather sliders (under Global Mask Editing Tools ) to allow for changing the density or opacity of masks as well as blur masks for softening that will, no doubt, be interesting to explore, along with features as Blur and Chisel Mask Tools or Paint with Color Brush.
The updated user interface helps to get work done faster, and the little touch of being able to select your own UI accent color will be gladly explored by some users. On a more practical note, the fact that you can custom name filters and layers to easier keep track of work will be appreciated by many users.
Improved highlight recovery is something ON1 worked for this version, tweaking the algorithms. Additional camera and lens support, with the Nikon D850, Olympus EM-10 III, Panasonic DMC-G85, preliminary support for Sony a7R III present, plus a ton of new lenses, are something users will appreciate, especially because some companies seem to take a long time to update those essential elements of their programs.
There is more to this version, but I wanted to explore what a normal workflow would look like, so I moved some recent images from a recent Halloween studio shoot and event through the Browse, Develop and Effects modules, which are those people will visit the most. Browse continues to be a fast enough tool, faster if you catalog the folders. Probably, the more images you catalog the slower the system gets – only time will tell us that – so, right now, I am only indexing those folders I feel I might use more. It will be interesting to see how ON1 Photo RAW 2018 works with different computer specs, so I will keep an eye on the conversations online, which are always a source of information.
The program crashed once, when I tried to change from fast to accurate RAWs, and behaved well while I worked, but as usual, “mileage may vary” so my own experience may not be similar to yours. This said, the ON1 Photo RAW 2018 is, as ON1 puts it, “a viable integrated tool with accelerated photo management, precise photo development, hundreds of customizable photo effects, fast and beautiful HDR, pano stitching, masking and blending adjustments, layers, and much more – in one app.”
While the program is the essential element that may interest readers, I believe it is always interesting to go behind the scenes and discover those creating the tools we adopt. In that sense, the video The ON1 Story – I know, it is a marketing thing! – reveals how a small company has been working to have a presence in the market. While with a giant corporation it is hard to know who does what, in this small group it is, at least for now, possible to find individuals who care deeply about photography and understand their role in the whole process. If you’ve followed ON1 evolution, looked at the tuition videos online, you’ve come to feel that you almost “know” some of the people, you’ve learned from their experience – and errors – and that human touch, I believe, is also part of ON1’s story.
The small group is, you discover in the video, formed by individuals who care deeply about photography, committed to help users to get the most out of ON1 apps. The company’s mission “has always been and will continue to be building powerful editing tools and providing valuable educational content to save time and money for everyone who loves photography. We are committed to helping you get the most out of ON1 apps by providing you the best support and service in the industry.”
The road to ON1 Photo RAW 2018 has been made with the help of the community, through the ON1 Photo RAW Project. In fact, almost every feature and improvement made to the app in version 2018 is a direct result of community input, something ON1 wants to keep alive for future editions. The company says that “what we build and how we build is for all to see. We will continue to share with the world the features and improvements we work on and solicit customer feedback in an open forum via the ON1 Photo RAW Project” and promises to do its best “to provide photography software and education for many years to come.”
ON1 Photo RAW 2018 is available for download as a free 30-day trial from the ON1 website. Previous owners of any ON1 app (or ON1 plug-in) can upgrade for $99.99. Those who don’t own an ON1 app can order for $119.99. ON1 Photo RAW 2018 is also bundled with some excellent bonus materials which include: three ON1 Photo RAW 2018 courses by Product Director Dan Harlacher, and all of their 2017 and 2018 Loyalty Rewards. ON1 Photo RAW 2018 works with both Mac and Windows.
Price wise, ON1 Photo RAW is not very different from Lightroom’s perpetual license version, which is no longer available, apparently. The difference, though, is that even if ON1 releases a new version each year, users are not forced to update, and the software continues to be theirs, one aspect that is important to many users. Another important aspect to consider is that the price includes activation on up to five computers, something many seem to forget when discussing the cost of different programs. In a mobile world being able to have the same program installed in different computers with a single license is an advantage.
One last note: if you’ve tried the recent beta version of ON1 Photo RAW 2018, you may receive a coupon for $20 off Photo RAW 2018. Use coupon code RAW20 to get your discount after adding the product to your cart. With this coupon, owners of previous ON1 products can purchase for just $79.99, and new customers can purchase for only $99.99 (reg $119.99). Expires November 14th.
