the flint coming out/silvers worst possible reaction convo is one of the few times we actually see flint like. uncomfortable? or nervous i guess? when silver says he doesn't think the pattern of flint's closest person/partner dying will apply to him because of recent events, flint's response ("it is .. natural for men new to power to assume that it has no limits. trust me - it does.") seems strange. he doesn't argue against seeking out his own tragedies as he did before, or deny the pattern, or tell silver to stop blaming him for the deaths of his partners. he tells silver he isn't as powerful as he might feel at that moment. he's defensive, thrown off-balance by the vulnerability of sharing his most guarded heart and secret, only for silver to throw it back in his face. this conversation is significant for a number of reasons, but one of which is that it highlights flint's devotion to silver (he tells silver he is Entitled to the truth) and silver's reticence to genuine connection with flint. he tells flint he's sorry, but then ruthlessly points out a pattern he sees as a potential danger to him. silver is STILL acting in his own self interest here, almost defensively, whereas flint has given himself entirely over to silver. what happens makes me think of this post - flint has such personal authenticity, he KNOWS what he stands for, he has cast his lot, his narrative is fixed, that he is able to give his truth to silver. whereas silver is still playing at both sides. his identity has coagulated into silver, but he's not Long John Silver yet. he doubts this war, he doubts flint and madi's motivations. why expose a weakness when there's no need? all he sees of flint's confession is a potential threat to him. and then there's flint's response in the face of silver coolly explaining why he will survive flint's self-inflicted tragedy, a weak attempt at silver's feelings of strength, a defensive response to what flint perceives to be an attack from silver.. which silver IMMEDIATELY overturns with his stunt with dobbs, using the men as pawns in his dance with flint, proving to flint that silver is strong, that silver will survive flint. that silver will hurt flint. and all flint has to offer is an uncertain but (to me) very genuine attempt at comfort in the face of silver's ironclad defense of his own strength. that even if they agree silver has such powerful influence over the men, flint can still stand with him, against him if they have to.

🏴‍☠️🦜🔱 BLACK SAILS EPISODE BRACKET : FINALE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🦜 THIS IS IT! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED <3 SUMMARIES UNDER THE CUT:
[LEFT] XXVIII. (3.10) — As Flint buries the treasure, he is questioned by Silver about his true reasons for the war against the British and the tactics for the upcoming battle on the island. On the day of the attack, the British and Hornigold manage to take the beach with superior firepower, forcing Flint and his men to retreat. Meanwhile, Rackham and Anne unite with Blackbeard's fleet, who seeks revenge for the death of Charles Vane. In Nassau, Eleanor is confronted by an anonymous message, which demands the remains of Charles Vane as well as the gibbet be removed from the market square. Rogers recovers and reassures Eleanor of his support in overcoming her enemies. Silver sends Dobbs to the beach to kill Hornigold. In a later battle, Hornigold shoots Dobbs. Hornigold is eventually killed by Flint. In Nassau, a pardoned pirate captain is murdered by Billy, as there was no reaction to the message with the black spot. With the help of Anne and Rackham, Blackbeard's fleet manages to force the British fleet to retreat. In Nassau, Billy uses the name "Long John Silver" to create a claim of responsibility for the murder.
[RIGHT] XXXVIII. (4.10) — Jack and his crew arrive at Skeleton Island and attempt to rescue any survivors in the aftermath of Rogers' ambush of Flint and Silver's crew. Jack, Flint, and Silver sail behind Rogers and the Eurydice to engage them in one final battle. The Eurydice has been seized and Flint and Silver go back to Skeleton Island to retrieve the treasure. Jack returns to Philadelphia to talk to Marion Guthrie about her buying out Rogers' debts. Flint chooses to go to Savannah. Order, at least on the surface, is restored in Nassau.

Black Sails Monologuolympics 7.1: FLINT: ROUND 1 🩸
12/16: 102 vs 310
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flint, to Eleanor & Scott, in 102: “Odysseus, on his journey home to Ithaca, was visited by a ghost. The ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest. The ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland. And keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel. For that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea. And that's where he'd find peace. In the end, that's all I want. To walk away from the sea and find some peace.”
Flint, to Silver, in 310: “Let us say there is some merit to your argument. Let us say that Mr. Dobbs will do as you ask of him. I would have to admit in that case that the world has shifted beneath our feet in a most startling way. But in terms of our future and the danger that you believe you may pose to me, bear this in mind. I have survived starvation, a tempest, pirate hunters, jealous captains, mutinous crews, angry lords, a queen, a king, and the gddmn British navy. So to whatever extent you may be concerned that some day we will clash, worried that though today we be friends, some day you will have no choice but to be my end, I wouldn't worry too much.”

2023 elections, a pretty damn good night.
Hello, if you're an American maybe you know there were some elections last night, here are some highlights
Rhode Island Special Election:
Gabe Amo was elected to Congress from Rhode Island's First Congressional district. The son of African immigrants (father from Ghana, mother from Liberia) Amo is the first black person to represent Rhode Island in Congress. His election brings the Congressional Black Caucus to a historic 60 members, an all time high.
Ohio Ballot measures:
In an overwhelming vote Ohio voters approved a ballot measure that puts the right to an abortion into the state constitution. This overturns the extremely restrictive abortion ban passed by the Republican state legislature in 2019 which was allowed to go into effect after the Supreme Court's Dobbs ruling.
A similarly overwhelming vote for a ballot measure legalizing marijuana in the state also passed last night. Both measures got about 57% of the vote in a state that voted for Trump 53-45% in 2020. It's being taken as a good sign for Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown's re-election campaign next year
Kentucky gubernatorial election:
Incumbent Democratic Governor Andy Beshear sailed to victory over rising Republican State state Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Cameron had been vetted for the Supreme Court by Trump, was hand picked for the AG race and Governor's race by Mitch McConnell who its rumored wanted Cameron to replace him in the Senate one day. So this defeat is the end of the political life of what many Republicans hoped would be a star. Cameron and the KYGOP attacked Beshear for his support of trans rights, his veto of a trans care for minors ban, as well as his support for abortion and ran ads tying him to President Biden. Beshear won 53-47% in a state Trump won 62-36% in 2020.
Virginia Legislative elections:
Virginia's Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin hoped to take control of the Virginia State Senate from the Democrats who had a one seat majority in the upper house. If Youngkin could have done it he planned on passing abortion restrictions and anti-trans laws and use it to prove his future Presidential ambitions. Virginia Democrats not only held onto the Senate Senate they expanded their control by picking up 22 seats. Also special, Danica Roem the first openly trans person elected to a state legislature back in 2017 when she was elected to the Virginia state House won her race to become Virginia's first trans state senator. Not only did Democrats hold onto the State Senate, they took control of the State House as well, going from 48 seats to 51. A strong rebuke to Youngkin's Republican agenda and boxing him in for the last two years of his Governorship
Pennsylvania Supreme Court election:
In Pennsylvania Democrat Daniel McCaffery beat out Republican Carolyn Carluccio for a seat on the state Supreme Court. This secures a Democratic majority on the court ahead of year of challenges to abortion rights and ahead of the 2024 elections where Republicans will surely try to challenge the state's election results in court.
New Jersey Legislative elections:
Democrats already controlled the NJ State House and Senate but last night they managed to pick up more seats in both. Including flipping what was generally considered the deepest red district in the state. The 30th District went to Republicans 72% in the last election. However this time a Jewish Democrat Rabbi Avi Schnall won one of the district's two seats beating a Republican incumbent by 10 points.
I'm sure lots of other cool things happened last night in local elections and ballot measures across the country but those were the one's I noticed.

Yeah I really didn’t like the end to season 3 of black sails lmao I just don’t think it made sense for the character motivations to turn certain ways and like the battle was good, I liked the reveal that Dobbs was doing what Silver wanted him to do all along, but idk the like turn in Silver’s personality didn’t really feel earned yknow? Like it could’ve used a little more time in the oven to grow from “guy who the crew loves” to “guy who the crew both loves and fears” because you don’t see enough of that fear. If you had had Silver be more willing to follow in Flint’s footsteps and like discipline people without remorse I think the change may have made more sense and like, I’m not saying it didn’t need to happen I’m not saying it’s not necessary, but I don’t feel like at this point that the crew fears him. Dobbs fears him, the people who saw him stomp a man’s skull in fear him, but the others haven’t had the chance to see that side of him, not really. And the growth wasn’t subtle like Vane’s subtle bettering, the way he slid from being a real piece of shit to giving his life for Rackham and Flint. The growth is more sudden and takes place entirely within season 3. I think part of that is that during some parts of season 2, Silver doesn’t necessarily play a huge role (since it is the Flint Backstory Season), but particularly in the episodes where they’re in the doldrums he should’ve had more of a gradual build into the darkness.
That’s just my opinion anyway and I mean I’ve been mashing through these episodes fast so I could be missing stuff but like idk I think Silver needed more time to show this growth and I think time would have been better spent doing that instead of watching Eleanor fuck Woodes fucking Rogers.

Day 2: Favorite Quote  ➡ Charles Vane, XXVI
You have no instinct towards earning for yourself a life more comfortable?
I don't. And had I that instinct, I would resist it with every inch of will I could muster.

actually. wrt to my last post. the theme of s3e10 is underestimation. flint underestimates silver, hornigold underestimates flint, chamberlain underestimates teach, teach underestimates jack. flint underestimates silvers power over the men and silvers ability to See, and silver shows flint how wrong he is

🏴‍☠️💀 BLACK SAILS EPISODE BRACKET
ROUND 4 - SEMI FINALS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE END IS NEAR !! SUMMARIES UNDER THE CUT.
[LEFT] XVIII. (2.10) — In Charles Town, the day of Captain Flint's trial comes. Lord Ashe offers him a chance to avoid humiliation, but Flint declines, still bitter at Ashe for Mrs. Barlow's death. However, help for Flint arrives in the unlikeliest form: Charles Vane. Vane's men launch their attack on the city, and Flint and Vane fight their way out, with Flint murdering Ashe en route. They reach the ship to find Flint's crew have regained leadership, but Flint orders Vane's crew be released - realizing pirates have to unite against the rest of the world. Silver, after being tortured, is forced to have his leg amputated. When he finally awakens, he reveals that the spy they hired to watch the Spanish soldiers sold the location to Jack, but he leaves out his own part in the exchange. The ending scene shows Max celebrating Jack's success at bringing the treasure back to Nassau.
[RIGHT] XXVIII. (3.10) — As Flint buries the treasure, he is questioned by Silver about his true reasons for the war against the British and the tactics for the upcoming battle on the island. one thing i appreciate tremendously about storytelling in black sails is the way reinforcement is done through subversion. the most obvious example being 310 with dobbs shooting the pirate as a subversive reinforcement of his loyalty to silver. every single one of the parallels is more interesting when examined for contrast than for similarity. and apart from how reinforcement through subversion overall is an incredibly strong technique from getting across an idea it is, again, a bonkers method to use so liberally in a story about stories in a story about what is true. we are telling you the same story over and over. listen carefully to what doesn't rhyme and there you will find the truth.
