How to regram on Instagram
Incorporating others’ content into your Instagram feed is a common and effective Instagram strategy. User-generated content (UGC) is often used by brands to showcase their customers and influencers. To find UGC, read up on how to listen and monitor on Instagram.
To use UGC, you’ll need to know how to regram on Instagram. In this article, we’ll walk you through a few of your regramming options. Options vary from free to paid tools and apps.
Can I regram without leaving Instagram?
No – unlike Twitter and Facebook with their easy Retweet and Share features, Instagram does not have a repost button. Since its inception, Instagram has maintained a preference for original content. But that certainly doesn’t stop its users for finding creative ways to regram.
As you can see above, sharing to other networks is easy but it is not possible to regram without the help of another app or program. Later on in this article, we’ll provide you with several different ways to regram.
When it comes to directly publishing to Instagram with an app, it’s important to note that it’s offered for business accounts and official Instagram Partners. Be wary of apps that are not part of the official program but still offer the service.
How to regram manually with a screenshot
Without the use of another app, you always have the screenshot option.
Here’s how to regram with a screenshot:
Find the post that you want to regram.
Screenshot on your phone.
Crop the photo to take out all extra materials.
Create a new Instagram post with the fresh photo.
User beware, though, this method is limited by your phone model’s resolution. If you have an older model, your photo may display a little blurrier to someone using a new model.
How to regram with Sprout Social
Because Sprout Social is an official Instagram Partner, we can offer both the repost function and the auto-publishing function via our mobile app.
Here’s how to regram with Sprout Social:
Find the post you want to repost.
Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the post.
Click copy link.
Open the Sprout Social app
Click the in-app notification “Found Instagram Share Link! Tap to Reshare.”
It’ll open up a prompt. Choose “Schedule or Queue” or “Repost Now.”
The account’s name, username and first few caption lines will be copied over. Edit to suit your brand’s voice.
The Instagram post will be automatically published.

How to regram using Repost for Instagram +
There are many regramming apps out there. Many of these apps are free with paid features, such as removing a watermark. You may also need to contend with watching ads or having them in corners of the apps. Repost for Instagram + is one such app that is free to use.
Here’s how to regram with Repost for Instagram +:
Find the post you want to regram.
Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the post.
Open up the Repost for Instagram + app.
The post will appear. You’ll have a choice on which corner to place the repost overlay. You can also have no overlay.
Choose if you want to copy the caption or not. Click repost. If you do choose to copy the caption, the app will add “Posted @withrepost •”.
The app will request to open up Instagram.
There are a few pros to using this app. If you aren’t able to invest in a social media management solution yet, a free app is an easy choice. You’re also able to keep potential reposts in the app without publishing them immediately. When you copy a link over to the app, the post will appear in the app along with previously reposted photos. When it comes time to repost, select the one you want and publish it.
Finally, if you only want to only save the images and upload to a social media publisher, go through the motions for reposting. After you click on repost, the image will be saved to your photos.
How to repost with Later
Another free service with paid plans, Later offers a “Search & Repost” feature. You’ll need hashtags to find the post.
Here’s how to regram with Later:
Find the post you want to repost. Look at its hashtags and identify one to use to search by (the least commonly used would be the easiest).
Open up Later online.
Navigate to the left sidebar and find “Search & Repost”.
Enter one of the hashtags used on the post.
Find the post and click “Add to Library”.
The first few lines of the caption and hashtags the user used will be copied over.
In your library, find the post to schedule it.

Later’s Instagram publishing features are robust. You’re able to upload photos and videos, schedule them as you’d like and preview your Instagram grid. Its free plan limits you on the number of posts you can make in one month.
How to repost in Stories
We’ve been discussing a lot about how to regram in the Instagram feed, but what about Stories? You may find yourself with lots of potential content but it might not fit into your feed for a number of reasons. The post could be too visually off brand for you. Or you want to reshare someone’s Story that mentioned you. Here’s how to repost with Stories.
Reshare from feed to Story
It’s easy to reshare an in-feed post to your Story. Keep in mind that if you are sharing from a private account and you have a public one, you will only be able to share the post in DMs and not in your Story. If you’re unsure if the account is private, a warning will appear when you try and reshare.
Find the post you want to share.
Click the airplane share icon.
Select “Add post to story”.
Instagram Story will appear in edit mode with the post’s photo embedded in the center.
If you tap the post, it will change the design and offer the first few words from the caption.
Add what you’d like to the Story and then click “Your Story” to post it.
When someone sees your Story, they can click the embedded item and it’ll take them directly to the original post.
One fun twist on this is to place the UGC in the Story itself. Converse created a roundup of posts that mentioned them and the result is an entertaining recap.
Repost from Story to Story
Maybe someone’s Story is so good that you want to repost it into your own. Or maybe they mentioned you and you’d like to repost that. For the former, we recommend asking permission to repost and then taking a screenshot. For the latter, it’s easy to do.
If they mention you, the Story will appear in your DMs.
Find the DM. Click the “Add this to Your Story” prompt that appears on Stories that can be shared.
It’ll take you to the Story creation screen where you can resize the Story and add items to the background.
A good example of this tactic in use is Whole Foods’ recap of the best Story mentions they’ve had. See the above video to see how this was put into action.
Reshare from Story to feed
Maybe your Instagram Story had a lot of traction and you think it’d do well in your feed. It’s possible to repurpose your Instagram Story into a feed post.
Open up the Instagram Story you want to post. It can be a current Story or one in your Archive.
Select “Share as Post…”
This will take you to the screen where you can start a new post.
4 Best practices for regramming
Now that you know how to regram, you need to learn about best practices. We do not recommend reposting whatever you want. Be thoughtful and be kind.
1. Ask for permission and give credit
Instagram policy states that the original photographer owns the right of the photo. Using their photo without permission is a violation of this policy. Original photographers can file an intellectual property violation against you, which may lead to post deletion or account disablement with repeat offenses. For more information on what copyright on Instagram means, review their help page.
There are a couple of ways to ask for permission:
In a comment: post under the photo and ask if you can repost with credit.
Send the post as a DM to the account and ask for permission.
Go a step further and add a link to your terms of use like Airbnb does.
2. Keep true to the original photographer
This means you should keep edits at a minimum. Try not to crop or add filters in a way that would take from the original work. Additionally, pay attention to the original caption. If there’s a caption that was written to emotionally match the photo, don’t just take the photo and write about your upcoming sale.
A simple credit line like Girlboss does above is a great way to give credit to the original post.
3. Mix up original and regrammed content
A feed that features only regrammed content is really just a repost account. If you’re a brand with services and products, content is still king and original content still performs well. Using UGC in your strategy should be more about highlighting your customers’ feedback and uses of your product.
4. Keep it on brand
Visually and in writing, you want the items you repost to still be relatively on brand. For example, if you have a brand color of green and it shows up throughout your account’s feed, then you wouldn’t want to repost something that is mostly bright pink.
For captions, if you’re quoting the original post, you’ll want to make sure that it still positively reflects your brand and the brand voice. Check out the user profile to ensure that they’re also a good account to repost from. While it’s not a formal endorsement, reposts still work as a boost for the creator.
Topshop uses a mix of original and regrammed content. You’ll notice that the visual feel of their feed is still relatively the same, though.

The rise (and further rise) of Google My Business spam
Back in 2017, Google proudly told the world that it had eradicated 70 percent of all fake Google Maps listings in the two years prior. They put this down to innovations in machine learning and new business verification techniques.
Two years on, and it seems the machines are today wearing dunce caps and verification is just not working. How else do you explain Google My Business listings like these slipping through the net?

You’ll note that not only are these spammy, keyword-stuffed business names but that the supposedly trusted Local Guides trying to suggest edits to report them are having their edits rejected. We’ll come on to that in a little bit, but for now let’s take a look at how we got here.
GMB is the new local business home page, social network and feedback channel, conversion path, and…
Over the last couple of years, Google has been going all-in on expanding the functionality and potential use of its Google My Business profiles, elements of which appear in the Knowledge Graph, in Google Maps, and in the Local 3-pack.
Due to this increased use and visibility, and new social features like the introduction of a ‘Follow’ button for Google Maps users and ever-more-prominent Google Posts, consumers are being driven to consider a business’ GMB profile as a single source of truth, even over and above the local business website.
Because of this, GMB has become a wedge driven between consumers and businesses. Searchers can no longer get a first impression of a business created and tailored by the business itself. That first impression now belongs to Google, and for better or worse, search marketers have to make exceptionally good use of the wide range of available GMB features to ensure that their businesses or clients can stand out against their competitors.
With GMB now such a critical part of the consumer’s journey, it’s inevitable that people would seek to take advantage of weaknesses in the system in order to benefit their businesses’ positions. Thus we have Google My Business spam, and with it no end of keyword-stuffed business names, fake listings, fake reviews, and more.
The real impact of Google My Business spam
You might easily dismiss it as a non-issue, but whereas other instances of spam can be easily filtered out using technology, no such filter exists for GMB, and so spam on this platform can have far-reaching impacts.
These impacts have been well-documented in a recent BrightLocal poll that focused specifically on GMB spam. 77 percent of respondents felt that GMB spam made it harder to deliver good rankings for their own businesses or their clients.
Still not convinced it’s an issue? Imagine it this way: you’re a local SEO professional following every bit of best practice under the sun to optimize a website for the right search terms, to feed GMB the right data, and to generate great reviews. You put hours into this work and finally rank well for the required local search terms.

GMB spam isn’t just unfair, it risks damaging the reputations of Google My Business as a trustworthy source of information as well as the many industries which seem to be more likely to take part in GMB spam, like auto repair, locksmiths, garage door contractors, and (though they really should know better) legal professionals.
And although GMB spam isn’t a new problem, it seems to be getting more prevalent. The aforementioned poll asked how listings spam had grown in the previous year.
Fifty-nine percent believed it had increased, and 25 percent of them said it had increased significantly. So the question I find myself asking today isn’t just why is there so much GMB spam it’s “why is there so much now?”
Who you gonna call…?
For a time, Google Gold Product Experts and spam-fighters like Joy Hawkins, Ben Fisher, Jason Brown, and countless others, gave their free time over to helping business owners report spam for removal in the (soon-to-be-defunct for reasons I’ll come to) Spam and Policy board in the Google Advertiser Community Forum. Sure, you could tweet @GoogleMyBiz or message them on Facebook, but this was a great way to add plenty of detail around a spam report and engage with someone who really cared, one on one.
Then Google took over.
For reasons I’m not personally privy to (but would love to hear your theories about in the comments below), Google made the decision to close the GMB Spam forum and instead encourage people who discover spam to report it via a new online form, stating simply:
“We’ll close the Spam board on this community, so please use the new form to report spam-related issues.”
“Complaints submitted through this form will be reviewed in accordance with our guidelines for representing businesses on Google Maps.”
As sad as I was to see the forum close, I rather foolishly believed that this was a sign that Google was going to finally take spam seriously, writing on the BrightLocal blog at the time,
“This week Google finally took a big step towards acknowledging the damage GMB spam does to consumers and businesses alike.”
What a fool I was. I thought that having human staff at the other end of these complaints showed Google was starting to care more, and that the use of a standardized form meant that the process of actioning complaints would be simpler.
Sadly, right now it seems I was wrong. Just follow the popular #StopCrapOnTheMap thread on Twitter and you’ll see an even more steady stream of Local Guides and spam-fighters sharing sadly comic examples of particularly egregious and obvious cases of GMB spam.
Even before this new wellspring of spam, Joy Hawkins spoke on an InsideLocal webinar about the efficacy of making ‘suggested edits’ to spammy GMB profiles (now one of the only recourses for Local Guides trying to fight spam), saying:
“I think it works less and less. It used to work a lot better when Map Maker was around because peers could review your edits, but we’re seeing suggested edits being less useful in most cases. Google’s turnaround time is about 3-4 months, we’ve been finding.”
So we already have a case where:
Google My Business is critical to business success
People are taking advantage of its weaknesses
Google has made efforts to make the spam-fighters toothless
Spam still works, and “the situation is getting worse, not better” (as Joy Hawkins again testifies below)

The above is a particularly bad example of Local Guides being stripped of their accounts without reason. While Google’s aim might have been to automatically delete the accounts of Local Guides behaving dubiously (a noble aim, I’d add), when dedicated Local Guides are unceremoniously removed from the program without warning, one has to question Google’s overarching approach to spam removal.
As always, this all comes with the customary silence from Google.
So what can we do about it?
Although the above might come as depressing reading, I must stress that the vigilance of good SEOs trying to do right by their local business clients is very heartening to see, so there is hope.
Google might be clumsily breaking the tools in our spam-fighting arsenal, but we’ll always have heroes like Dave DiGregorio (below) to thank for helping to spread the word about other, clever ways to identify spam:

In the meantime, keep building up those Local Guide levels, keep suggesting edits, keep filling out Google’s “Business Redressal Complaint Form,” keep reporting spam to GMB Twitter and Facebook and stay positive.
I still have faith that one day, once Google realize that the issue is damaging trust in their products (and, obviously, stopping business from advertising with them), they’ll invest in far better technology to finally #StopCrapOnTheMap.

1. Share high-quality photos and videos
Of course, great content requires thought and planning. That is if you want people to actually click that heart. Three tips to help:
Show your face. Or someone else’s. To increase your odds by 38%.
Know your colors. Primarily blue pictures get 24% more ‘likes’ than red ones. Single versus multi-colored also increases ‘likes’ likelihood by 17%.
Choose your filters. Thoughtfully. Filters that increase contrast, correct exposure, with a warmer tone get the best results. Just ask Yahoo and Georgia Tech. Use Instagram’s editing tools over their pre-programmed filters.

Use relevant tags. Otherwise users will select the ‘Don’t show for this hashtag’ option.
Place them just right. Say, 2 or 3 of your most important tags in the photo caption.

Vary them up. Don’t use the same list for every post.
Which hashtags should you use?
Not the ones everyone else is using. Sure, #like4like is popular. But it’s pretty obvious to your followers that you’re fishing for ‘likes’ rather than connecting with like-minded peeps. Bots love these, too. Your stats will be meaningless, just like those tags.

One could write an entire article, just about hashtags. And we did.
3. Tag relevant users
Why tag someone? To encourage them to engage with your post and share it with their followers.
Or to credit them, if they took the picture/video.
Tag other Instagram users featured in your photos with an @-mention in your caption. Or, use Instagram’s tagging functionality. Either way, they’ll receive a notification.
4. Write darn-good captions
I was gonna say ‘damn-good’, but thought not to.
Anyway…
A nice visual plus text is like peanut-butter and chocolate. Readers will go ‘ahhhh’ (and tap the heart).
Write your captions with some TLC.
Tell your story, using words and pictures. Unlike Twitter, there’s no character limit. Make it long, or not. You get to decide. But make it count.
Some ideas:
Ask a question. It can make the reader lean in, with interest. Sounds less promotional, too.
Let your hair down. A little humor never hurt nobody. That ‘suit and tie’ approach… sucks. Especially for this crowd.
Show some love. Got followers praising you? Cool. Mention them in your caption.
That ‘less is more’ thing. True that. Sometimes a minimalist caption will highlight a striking image. Also, it can be a stylistic way to impress followers. One-liners, quotes, song lyrics… you’ve got options.

Tagging your location puts your business on the map.
And, makes it dead simple for people to discover your photos and videos.
Plus, users view posts more that are tagged with a location.

This becomes a clickable field for the user. Clicking on the location shows all photos and videos for that place. Your brand is now associated with this location, like a shop, hotel, or head office. Or, make it more general, for a city or town.

6. Get on the Explore tab
Also known as the Explore page.
What is it?
Curated topics and personalized content you will adore. At least that’s what Instagram believes, based on your previous actions and engagement patterns. Wired calls it, “the most honest place on the internet.” Ah, how nice. Click on the magnifying glass to see for yourself.
Why use it?
For your brand to become more recognized. Placing high on the Explore tab can get you new followers and a steady flow of traffic.
How to get on it
It’s not completely known, but most likely, Instagram uses these criteria to place content in the Explore tab:
Content similar to what users engaged with
Content with high engagement
Content from accounts similar to accounts the user already follows
How to improve your chances
Know your audience. Like: your target customer, their interests, and who they follow. Create a persona to target your content.
Listen closely. Tailor your content based on how your audience is engaging with theirs.
Use hashtags. We talked about this above. Don’t skip it.

7. Post consistently
Why?
People will know what to expect. This keeps followers engaged with a consistent, versus overwhelming, flow in their feeds.
Establishes authority and credibility. You’ll be considered a thought leader in your industry.
Your brand will be recognized. By consistently sharing content with your target audience. 93% of organizations depend on this.
Engage with your audience. Which makes them come back for more. Loyal customers generate more revenue. Cheaper than acquiring new ones.
Generate leads. Give people useful, interesting content, they’ll knock on your e-door to learn more.
8. Post at the right time, too
Which is 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.
That’s what we do. Because our audience scrolls through Instagram during their lunch hour. Since we’re B2B, our strategy is weekday focused.
Instagram moved away from the reverse-chronological feed, but timing still matters. They explain on their blog, posts are ordered based on:
Likelihood of their interest in your content
One’s relationship with your brand
Timeliness of posts (an emphasis for us)
Timing is everything. What’s yours?

Knowing your audience
Testing different times
Measure what works, what doesn’t. Do more of what does.
9. Run a “like-to-win” contest
Say I offered you a free flight to your next holiday destination. You only needed to post a cool photo of yourself on vacation.
Would you do it?
Of course.
That’s the seductive play of an Instagram contest.
There’s a few types of these contests. We like the like-to-win one best.
It’s simple to do. Just ask users to like an Instagram photo of your brand, so they can win a prize. It’s a great way to connect with your audience and get people excited about your brand.
Set goals and metrics to see how it’s working.
For building brand awareness, measure follower count, engagement, and website traffic
For an annual sale, measure purchases, year-over-year engagement, and landing page traffic

10. Ask your followers to tag their friends
You can also encourage your followers to tag their friends in the comments. For example: “Tag someone you know who needs a vacation!” This can help expose your Instagram account to a larger network of people.
11. Comment and ‘like’ posts of others
Do this and Instagram will reward you, because they care most about engagement.
When a post receives a bunch of likes and comments, Instagram sees this as quality, engaging content that more people will want to see. So then…
Get on and scroll your feed
Like what you like
Write useful comments (not patronizing ones)
Participate in a social community that actually cares about each other’s posts. Not much more to say than that.
12. Share your Instagram posts on other channels
No need to keep things to yourself.
Increase your reach by sharing your posts on other social sites. But, alter them a bit versus just posting as is. So it works best for that platform and audience. For instance…
Address your Facebook friends differently than your LinkedIn connections
Edit your message to fit Twitter’s 280 character count limit
For Pinterest, post just the picture
Use formats wisely, too.
Multiple hashtags work well for Twitter and Instagram. But on Facebook or LinkedIn, you might not get the same results.
13. Use Instagram ads
Remember that $10.87 billion in revenue by 2019?
You want some of that, right? Just like 2 million other companies.
Here’s some ads to help you get more likes on Instagram:
Photo ads
Use these to tell your story and showcase your products using compelling images.
Parachute Home used these to promote a 60-night trial of their bedding, using a Shop Now call-to-action.
Their beautiful stuff aimed at 18-54 year-olds, for their core customer profile. The result? A 3.7 times return on spend. With a click-through rate 2 times that of ads on other platforms.
Video ads
As we now know, Instagram users are crazeeee about videos.
Videos were posted 4 times more than photos in 2017, compared to 2016.
Seems you should do the same.
OGX, a global hair care brand, created a video campaign around ‘Rock What You’ve Got”. This featured women celebrating their diverse hair textures and styles, targeted to millennial women.
This reached an impressive 61 percent of the target audience in the US. The same in Canada, UK, Germany, and Australia combined.
Video ads can be up to 60 seconds, but OGX shows a solid video doesn’t need to be long, as theirs was only 15 seconds.
Carousel ads
These let users swipe through a series of images or videos, with a call-to-action button connecting them directly to your website. Use more creative freedom to tell a longer story.

She created and published a series of carousel ads for her workout app, Sweat: Kayla Itsines Fitness.

This article will help you find those influencers.
Influencer marketing is big business.
Why?
Because it’s too expensive to build your own audience.
It’s far more efficient to find someone influential who already has a big enough audience that also happens to be your target audience.
When I started out with my other company, RazorSocial, I made a list of the top 100 social media influencers and built relationships with them.
The result was a massive increase in traffic (1,000,000 unique visitors in year 3) and I built my own influence.
I understand the challenge of finding the right influencers because I’ve been through it myself.
In this article, I’ll walk you through strategies and tools for finding real influencers in your niche.
So let’s get right to it!
What is influencer marketing
This is how I see it:
Influencer marketing is a form of relationship building that is based on an exchange of value.
They provide you with something of value and you give nothing in return… ha, ha!!!
That’s not how it works.
You develop a mutually beneficial relationship with the people who can help create visibility for your brand/product/service (or your clients) among relevant audiences.
If they see value in what you do they are more likely to share with their audience.
But:
You need to think about how you can create value for them.
Promote their content
Provide testimonials they can use in their marketing
Buy their books
Guest post on their site
Pass leads to them that you can’t service with your business
Look:
Here’s a way of adding value. Give them a case study to write about. For example, Brian Dean is a very influential SEO guy who promotes his audience following his tactics:
This offers a lot of value to them and to you.
By focusing on a small list of specific influential people who are a good fit for your business, you’ll get the benefit of exposure to a targeted audience that you couldn’t have reached on your own.
I love the following quote from Mark Schaefer:

Why is influencer marketing becoming more effective than traditional paid advertising?
First of all, more and more people are using ad blockers to fight off intrusive advertisements.
….Plus, they’ll trust recommendations from influencers they follow and trust more than any ad when they make a decision to buy a product.
According to a Twitter study, nearly 40% of their users say they’ve made a purchase as a direct result of a Tweet from an influencer.
So many brands are investing in influencer marketing, but does it really pay off?
The ROI from influencer marketing is stronger than you may think. On average, businesses generate $6.50 for every $1 invested in influencer marketing.
If these stats convinced you to start your own influencer marketing campaign, the first thing you’ll need to do is find the right influencers to work with.
Who are your influencers?
Influencers are people (bloggers, industry thought leaders, analysts, journalists, etc.)
But influential websites could also be on your target list.
For example:
An influencer could be a person that has access to an audience you need to get access to, and their audience pays attention to what they say.
A website could rank for a lot of the top keywords you want to rank for, so they are influential because they are taking the audience away from you.
What level of influencers are there?
There are different “levels of hierarchy” when it comes to influencers. Depending on their level of influence, they will make a different impact when they share your content or promote your brand.
You’ll find many articles online that break down the influencer hierarchy, but a lot of them just make things seem more complicated than they are.
Here’s how I categorize influencers:
Citizen influencer
When someone mentions my brand or talks about a topic that’s closely related to my business on social media – I take notice!
These people may not have a very large audience, but they could still be influential and even help me engage an audience more effectively than a power influencer.
They typically have up to 10,000 followers and solid engagement rates. They may not help you reach masses, but they can definitely drive their audience to action.
A citizen influencer could be one of your social media followers, a niche blogger who’s just starting to build an audience, an industry pro who’s well-connected on social, etc.
Power Influencer
They typically have a large audience and can reach a lot more people than citizen influencers, providing more exposure for your brand.
However….
….as the size of the audience grows, the engagement usually drops. So it’s important to find power influencers that have not only good reach but also an engaged audience.
It may be a bit more difficult to get their attention through social media channels only, so make sure to prepare your outreach emails, personalize them, and try to build a one on one relationship with them.
Power influencers are getting emails from people like you daily, so you need to find a way to stand out!
Celebrity Influencer
These are the people with a large-scale reach and they can be a good option if your goal is to create buzz and awareness around your brand.
But even if they are a good fit for your brand, it may not be worth reaching out to them directly.
The only way you can build a relationship with celebrity influencers is meeting them face to face at events, or getting access to them through a power influencer you’ve previously built a relationship with.
10 Ways to Find Influencers
Here’a quick summary:
Now let’s get into details.
1. Set up a monitoring tool to track competitors’ mentions
When we built OutreachPlus, I created a project in Brand24 (a monitoring tool) to track all our competitors’ mentions.
I then hired someone to create a list of all the people and websites that were mentioning our competitors.
I wanted to have a list of the influencers that were talking about competing products because they should be talking about our product as well.
The influencers needed to meet the following criteria:
Regularly talking about a topic that was relevant to our business.
A large engaged social following and/or a website domain authority (DA) of at least 40.  DA is a score given to a website on a scale of 1-100 and it’s a good indicator of website authority.  This metric is created and maintained by Moz.
These may or may not be the biggest influencers on the planet, but they are still influential and can make an impact on our business.
They may write about our products or services, share our content, recommend our solution and/or become a customer.
2. Find one influencer and follow the trail
If you find one key influencer in your industry it’s not that difficult to find more.
Pete O’Connor runs a software startup called BulletHq. They provide a free accounting solution for small businesses. You get a complete solution for free and then you can buy add-ons as your business grows.
Pete wanted to find influencers to help promote his tool, and his approach was following the trail.
He found a couple of key influencers and then analyzed their accounts to see who they were interacting with on a regular basis.
Influencers chat with influencers.
And…
… He produced a great list that he used for outreach.
Here’s another example:
Jeff Bullas is a friend of mine and also one of the key influencers in social media.
By using a tool called Twitonomy I can see who Jeff mentions the most in his tweets:
I know every account listed above because they are all key influencers.  They are either influencers in social media, digital marketing, or entrepreneurship.
It’s not difficult to find influencers by following a trail.
3. Invest in an influencer identification tool
Finding the right influencers is key if you want influencer marketing to work for you.
There are some good tools that can help you find influencers who are relevant to your business and have the right level of reach, social influence, and overall authority.
Check out GroupHigh.
This tool has a huge database of blogs that you can search through to find the bloggers that would be the best fit for your campaign.
Like with any other search engine, the key to getting the most relevant results is determining the right keywords to use for search.
For example:
I’ve been working with a local tourism board recently to find a group of influential travel bloggers and invite them to come to Ireland for a travel blogging event. I used GroupHigh to find them.
The search terms I used for this campaign were ‘travel blogger’ and ‘travel writers,’ and the tool returned some pretty good results.
I then filtered the results to only see the blogs that have a Domain Authority greater than 50.
The tool has many other filters available so you can narrow down your list of influencers by location, social accounts available, MozRank, tactics they use (sponsored posts, guest post), and more.
Another great tool that you can use to find influencers is BuzzSumo. You can use it to search for influencers based on a topic or a keyword. When you run your search, you’ll get a list of influencers with their Twitter handles and bios.
Here’s a preview of the list I got when I performed a search for “content marketing.”
Now I can assess the level of authority for each influencer by looking at the number of followers they have, the engagement rate, as well as their domain and page authority.
Another useful piece of functionality that can help you further filter your search is “view links shared.” You can see what content they share most and from which domains.
All this information will help you determine how relevant the influencers are to your brand or a specific outreach campaign you’re planning.
Traackr is also another useful tool for finding influencers.  It has a great search facility for identifying influencers and I love the relationship funnel which helps track your engagement with the influencers.
4. Search on Google
When we started OutreachPlus, we used SEMRush to do a full analysis of our competitors and all the keywords they were ranking for.
We then used those keywords to see who else is ranking for them in Google.
These are the potential influencers.
For example, when I searched for ‘email marketing outreach’ I came across this article:
HubSpot has a Domain Authority of 89 and they write about digital marketing.
They are an influencer. You see, influencers are both people and websites.
Now, how do I get HubSpot to write about me?
Well, maybe I do some amazing outreach like the one that worked for Bryan Harris.
HubSpot wrote an article about this and said it was the best outreach email they ever got:
  So Brian got to write an article and also got featured in an article.

Searching through Google can help you find influencers, but it can also be a great source of inspiration for effectively reaching out to those influencers.
5. Spend time on social
When you spend time on social media, you can start identifying key influencers in your industry.
For example, people create lists on Twitter and add influencers to those lists.  This can be a ready-made source of influencers.
For example:
Here’s a list of Irish Journalists on Twitter:
One way to find relevant lists is searching for a top influencer in your industry. On an influencer’s Twitter profile, click on “Lists” and you’ll see a) the lists they follow, and b) Twitter lists they’ve been added to by others.
Going through the Twitter lists your top influencers belong to is one of the quickest ways to find new influencers to follow and reach out to.
There’s also a good old “stalking tactic” that you can use to find influencers. It may sound creepy, but let’s be honest, we’re all doing it.
The reason being – it’s quite simple to do so! You find a couple of big-name influencers, you “stalk” them (their social profiles) and see who they chat with on a regular basis. This will lead you to other influencers!
These conversations could be happening on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook etc.
You can also find influencers by looking at your social following to find out if there are any influential people sharing your content.
AgoraPulse is a social media management tool that lets you filter your audience and see who among your followers has the biggest audience and engages with your content the most. These are the people you should add to your influencer list/s.
Another way to find relevant influencers on social media is using hashtags related to your topic.
For example, you can type in your hashtag in the Twitter search bar and you’ll get a timeline of tweets for that particular hashtag. Go through the list of tweets and find influencers that are a good fit for your brand.

6. Ask Influencers
This may sound too simple to be a point in the article, but people are not doing this enough.
Reach out to an influencer you already have a relationship with and tell them you want to get to know other people in the industry. Ask them to give you the names of 2 people that they think are worth following.
Then reach out to those people and tell them their buddy recommended that you followed them and ask for 2 more people.
Before you know it you’ll have a list of influencers.
But that’s not all that happened. You also interacted with these influencers in a nice way. You are starting to build a relationship with them.

For the interaction from the example above, your score would have gone up by 1 point on the temperature gauge.
7. Find Influencers sharing relevant content
We’ve already mentioned BuzzSumo and how you can use it to find influencers. It’s an awesome tool, so I’m going to show you another way you can use it to find influencers.
“It’s easy to underestimate the human side of influencer relationships. Begin by joining their audience–it’s simple and inexpensive to offer your support for an influencer’s content. BuzzSumo is ideal for this type of organic influencer outreach. Once you’ve identified influencers, you can see their newest content as soon as it’s published, which makes it easy to share, like and comment on influencers’ posts. Because there is so much content available online today, influencer relationships and collaboration are more important than ever before. When writing a blog post or working on a project, it can seem simpler to work alone–no pesky email strands to follow up on! But, that’s a short-sighted view. Including others in the creation process not only strengthens the content, it increases the distribution as well because people who contribute to a piece of content are much more likely to share it. 
I guess we could say, “Create alone; distribute alone. Create together; distribute together.” 
I’m making it my goal this year to never work alone.

If you perform content research in BuzzSumo, you’ll be able to see who shared every piece of content the tool returns for your query.
For example, I’ve searched for “influencer marketing tips” and the tool quickly showed the most popular articles for that keyword. I clicked on ‘view sharers’ next to one of the articles and got a list of people who shared it, along with their audience size, engagement rates, and DA and PA.
I can now go through the list and find influencers that are sharing relevant content. These are the people who are likely to be interested in the kind of content I’m producing.
8. Find good backlinks for top related content
Search through Google and find the top articles related to keywords you want to rank for. Get the URLs of those articles and run them through Ahrefs Site Explorer tool.
You can then find the top backlinks for that particular piece of content and pick out only relevant high authority domains.
Here’s how to locate referring domains in Ahrefs:
Site Explorer > Enter article URL > Overview > Backlink profile > Referring domains
These authoritative referring domains are your influencers! By using this tactic you’ll probably find some link building opportunities that you haven’t discovered before.
9. Attend industry events
What about industry events? Who are all the speakers and sponsors? What are the names that consistently appear? They are the influencers in your industry.
Attending events can be a great way of connecting with influencers. However, when meeting with an influencer face to face, things can get awkward if they have no idea who you are.
If they are top influencers they’re going to be super busy and may not give you the time of the day.
Most influencers I know personally are actually very approachable, but you need to do a bit of work prior to the event to make sure your name rings a bell.
This means taking action in the online world (consume their content, comment on their work, share their articles on social, mention them in your tweets, etc.) before meeting them at an event.
10. Track results from shared links
Imagine if you had a database of email subscribers. You are running a promotion and you ask your subscribers to share.
If they share and something happens (e.g. a sale) they get rewarded.
So you make a list of people that generated sales for you.
They may or may not have large followings, but they are generating sales for your business which makes them influential.
You can use your email marketing automation tool to generate trackable links or use a custom tool such as ClickMeter.
The good thing about ClickMeter is that it will track the clicks on the personalized links, but it will also track everything right through to a conversion (if there is one).
