Cine: Billie & Emma (2018)

Es el primer día de clases en el St. Gerard Catholic School e Isabelle (la debutanta Zara Donato) ya ha causado una mala impresión: además de negarse a cantar en público cuando fue presentada en la escuela, en clase de religión ha contradecido abiertamente a su maestra y tía, la Sra. Castro (Cielo Aquino). El tema era conflictivo: la adolescente vivía con su tía después de ser hallada por su padre besando a una amiga y el tópico era nada menos que "La homosexualidad es un pecado". Añadiendo más elementos a la suspicacia social, la chica suele usar pelo corto y su personalidad es casi masculina.

En el otro extremo se encuentra Emma (Gabby Padilla), una de las mejores alumnas y orgullo de su familia. De novia con el inmaduro y pegajoso Miguel (Ryle Paolo Santiago), la aparición de Isabelle, también conocida como Billie supone toda una revelación: proveniente de Manila, capital filipina, su manera libre a la hora de enfrentar la vida la sorprende e interpela. Obligada a compartir con ella la tarea escolar de "cuidar" un huevo (el objetivo es representar la vida no nata), entre ambas va surgiendo una relación afectuosa cada vez más cálida hasta que se topan con un mazazo del destino (y de su propia inconciencia): ha quedado embarazada de Miguel y su futuro escolar corre serio peligro si la directora del colegio, la Hermana María (Dolly De Leon), se llegase a enterar.

Samantha Lee ejercita, en este relato que transcurre en los noventa, una notable sensibilidad a la hora de retratar dos instantes cruciales en las vidas de dos jovencitas que, en un mundo donde la religión impera, siempre hay lugar para circunstancias que la ponen en discusión.

Ai premi assegnati dalla North Dakota Film Society (#NDFS) la pluripremiata opera prima di Charlotte Wells #Aftersun ha vinto il premio per il miglior film oltre che per il miglior montaggio. Rispetto alle previsioni del mese di settembre, laddove non erano state ancora rese note le linee guida delle campagne degli Oscar (For Your Consideration), cambia qualcosa nella potenziale cinquina per la miglior attrice non protagonista. Sicuramente le scelte strategiche da parte della Universal Pictures di "spostare" prima Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) nella categoria lead actress e poi quella di direzionare Carey Mulligan (She said) tra le supporter (mentre inizialmente era data favorita tra le protagoniste), hanno aperto qui la strada a diverse possibilità. Questo spiegherebbe perché al momento non c'è una vera e propria front-runner anche se Jessie Buckley per Woman Talking è l'unica a confermare la sua posizione nella rosa. Spazio quindi alla risalita di Kerry Condon per Gli Spiriti dell'isola, di Hong Chau per The Whale, ma soprattutto di Janelle Monáe che per Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery ha vinto il National Board of Review e il premio dei critici di Atlanta, e della favorita di Variety Angela Bassett per Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Lo scorso anno 5 performance che ho indicato nelle previsioni di novembre 2021 hanno ottenuto successivamente la nomination all’Oscar, centrando la cinquina!
