Le monastère surmontait les étendues glacées et turquoises du lac. Il était clos pour hivernage et les neiges ne laissaient parfois apparaître que le haut des grandes portes. Le couvent paraissait vide car il n'était pas habité par les humains, descendus dans la vallée pour prier au chaud, le temps que le soleil du printemps leur permette de moins frissonner dans leurs cellules. Mais il n’en était rien : des murmures le parcouraient et chevauchaient les vents au travers des drapeaux de prières reliés par des lignes célestes ; rouge, jaune, blanc, vert et bleu, ils bruissaient dans les bises qui frayaient dans les hauteurs. 

Et l'arbre était là, avec ses écorces aux allures de peaux ridées par l’age et ses frondaisons portant des drapeaux de prières et des écharpes honorifiques bouddhistes. Le mien était noué à une branche à portée de main. Orange avec des liserés rouges et d'autres jaunes, mon katha dodelinait doucement dans le vent, sous l’œil des Lhas dans les montagnes.

Le monastère était parcouru aussi par de êtres de chair et de sang, dans le secret de la nuit. Car il fallait compter sur les animaux qui le visitaient à la disparition du jour : autour des bâtisses, apparaissaient au petit matin des trace multiples de coussinets de martres et de petit renards, de rongeurs et de corbeaux. Cette multitude empêchait de dénombrer les visiteurs qui foulaient le sol blanc de leurs pattes lestes, dans le bruissement de la neige.

Les vastes étendues blanches entouraient le lac et traversaient aussi les villages. Sans que nous le sachions, les animaux étaient alors bien proches de nos visages endormis...
