Script - Draft 8

I originally intended to have narration throughout the entirety of my film. I've written many drafts of what that narration would sound like and this is the most recent version:

DRAFT 8 – Schism

This was the first moment that I met my grandparents.

This is what I imagined they looked like, based on a combination of my mother's face, my aunt's bone structure, traditional clothing, every old Russian man I've seen in the movies and the fact that I know they have a penchant for driving old farm trucks.

When Moscow Patriarch Nikon reformed the Russian Orthodox Church in 1650 he created a division within the religious in Russia. The group that remained faithful to the original church is still known as The Old Believers.

After centuries of persecution the Old Believers left Russia in 1935 to protect their faith. China was closest, and they fled by foot across the frozen Amur River into the safety of life in another country.

In 1950 the community decided to move again. This time they crossed the ocean to Ponta Grossa, Brazil. My mother was born there, into this community, amongst the heat, the horses, and the houses on stilts.

Soon they pushed onwards and upwards to the USA. Oregon was a place for the family to settle and grow, but the western culture was invasive and in the minds of the Old Believers it threatened their beliefs and traditions.

In order to preserve the children’s faith the family relocated again in 1974 to Northern Canada and cleared new land for crops, livestock and a life of religious solitude. My mom finished growing up in that northern wilderness, but she was always somewhere between Brazilian and American, Russian and Canadian.

When she left the faith she lost an entire family.

  Cleaving-apart

  I know these travellers, but I am not one of them. Their history is my own, but I am as erased from their story as they are distant from mine.

Ultimately we only exist as the residuals of a single schism in our time and history.
