Il suo nome era già sulla bocca di tutti in Jugoslavia. Un talento assoluto, forse unico. Di lui si raccontavano cose incredibili. Della sua ossessione di diventare il più forte di tutti. Dei suoi allenamenti maniacali fin da ragazzino quando prima di andare a scuola arrivava nella piccola palestra di Sebenico che una compiacente donna delle pulizie gli apriva alle 6 di mattina e lui schierava sul parquet una serie di seggiole tra le quali andava in slalom prima di andare al tiro. Tutte le mattine che Dio mandava in terra. Poi a casa, una doccia e poi di nuovo a scuola. Drazen è un genio. Lo percepisci in ogni allenamento, nei movimenti che fa, nella visione del gioco, in quell’allucinante capacità di trovare il canestro da posizioni impossibili malgrado la pressione degli avversari.Lo ammirano tutti e tutti lo rispettano. Anche se in questa Nazionale ci sono giocatori come Dalipagic o Radovanovic molto più anziani ed esperti di lui e addirittura suo fratello Aza (di 5 anni più grande) si capisce subito che il suo carisma è qualcosa di speciale. Mi ha preso in simpatia. Dice che lo faccio ridere e che riesco a non farlo pensare sempre al basket. Beh, se questo è vero non oso pensare a come era prima che arrivassi io. To fully understand what's happening right now, you have to understand that Palestine has been going through an ethnic cleansing since 1948.

But let's start simpler than that. What exactly is ethnic cleansing? There are several definitions that vary very slightly, but they all agree on one thing: it's a crime against humanity and punishable under international law. However, for Palestinians, no justice was ever served.

The Hutchinson encyclopedia defines ethnic cleansing as expulsion by force in order to homogenise the ethnically mixed population of a particular region or territory. The purpose of expulsion is to cause the evacuation of as many residences as possible, by all means at the expeller’s disposal, including non-violent ones.

This definition is accepted by the US state department, whose expects add that part of the essence of ethnic cleansing includes the eradication by all means necessary of a regions history. Sound familiar? The UN employs a similar definition, linking a state/regime's desire for to impose ethnic rule on a mixed area with the use of acts of expulsion and other violent means.

(To understand ethnic cleansing from a more detailed, scholarly standpoint, the work of Drazen Petrovic is recommended, who exposes the close connection between politicians and the army in the perpetration of the crime.)

Wikipedia can be turned to to reflect the most popular definition, due to the fact that it can be edited/added to by anyone. It says: "At the most general level, ethnic cleansing can be understood as the forced expulsion of an ‘undesirable’ population from a given territory as a result of religious or ethnic discrimination, political, strategic or ideological considerations, or a combination of these."

So what happened in 1948? The Nabka ("Catastrophe") is the Palestinian word for the ethnic cleansing that occured when Israeli settlers systematically uprooted almost a million Palestinians from their native homes.

On the evening of the 10th of March 1948, military orders were dispatched to units on the ground to prepare for the systematic expulsion of the Palestinians from large areas of the country. Methods outlined to forcefully evict people included: large-scale intimidation; laying siege to and bombarding villages and population centres; setting fire to homes, properties and goods; expulsion; demolition; and, finally, planting mines among the rubble to prevent any of the expelled inhabitants from returning. Each unit had it's own list of villages and neighborhoods as targets.

This was called Plan D (Dalet in Hebrew), and was the fourth and final version of the plans that outlined what the Zionists had in store for Palestine and its native population. Previous schemes delt only obscurely with how they would deal with so many Palestinians living in the land that the settlers wanted as their own, however this one spelt it out clearly and unambiguously: the Palestinians had to go.

The aim of the plan was the destruction of both the rural and urban areas of Palestine. They succeeded. After six months, 800 000 people had been violently uprooted, 531 villages destroyed, and 11 urban neighborhoods emptied. Very few Palestinians were ever able to return.

Many atrocities and war crimes were committed during this time, including the poisoning of the water supply into Acre with typhoid, numerous cases of rape and dozens of massacres the Jews perpetuated.

This is the most formative event in the modern history Palestine, and it has ever since been systematically denied and erased from the global public memory. It's still today not recognised as an historical fact, let alone acknowledged as a crime that needs to be confronted politically as well as morally.

This is still happening today. We are watching live on our phones the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people, that's a direct continuation from what began in 1948. Il “nostro” Europeo. Così chiamavamo tra di noi la competizione continentale che stava per iniziare nel giugno del 1989 a Zagabria. E non ci riferivamo solo al fatto che si sarebbero giocati a casa nostra. Era il “nostro” Europeo perché semplicemente nessuno di noi contemplava la possibilità di farsi sfuggire la vittoria. Era passato meno di un anno dall’argento di Seul ma in realtà sembrava molto, molto più tempo. In quei 9 mesi molti di noi avevano fatto il salto più importante, difficile e decisivo: quello di passare da grandi promesse a essere atleti “veri”, finiti e completi. E soprattutto il passaggio, ancora più complesso, da ragazzi a uomini. Passaggio che nella vita, come nello sport, arriva solo quando scatta il momento della “assunzione di responsabilità”.Ebbene, quello è stato il MOMENTO. Quella è stata la competizione della svolta. Dentro di noi, nelle settimane di ritiro prima dell’inizio degli Europei, ci eravamo assunti, dal primo all’ultimo, la responsabilità di vincere quell’edizione. Io avevo 25 anni, Zarko e Jure 23, Dino 22, Vlade e Toni 21.Praticamente giovani ma al tempo stesso consci che il primo grande momento della verità era arrivato.

Il Mozart dei canestri, come lo chiamavano tutti, una leggenda nel basket degli anni Ottanta e Novanta… Drazen Petrovic nacque a Sebenico, in quella che oggi è la Croazia,  il 22 ottobre 1964 e passò la sua infanzia all’ombra del fratello maggiore Aleksandar che inizialmente sembrava il vero campione in famiglia e che solo quindicenne era conosciuto in tutto il paese per le sue doti nel basket. Ma il più giovane dei Petrovic, nato con una malformazione alle anche che gli aveva causato un’andatura irregolare, era ossessionato dal basket e a Sebenico, come fratello minore di Aza, aveva le chiavi della palestra e ogni giorno andava a tirare a canestro prima alle 6 del mattino, e dopo scuola fino a sera, sempre da solo. Drazen così sviluppò caratteristiche uniche, da individualista puro, che riuscivano comunque a inserirsi all’interno di una squadra, sapeva muoversi come voleva, aveva il controllo della palla, dei meccanismi di tiro rapidi e altamente precisi, anche dalla distanza, e sapeva fornire assist ai compagni, spesso in modo acrobatico e spettacolare. Inoltre nel suo stile influì molto la scuola croata, che ancora oggi non prevede una vera e propria specializzazione di ruolo, ma insegna a tutti a giocare in ogni posizione. Petrovic iniziò a ottenere le prime vittorie con la Nazionale jugoslava, dove formò il gruppo più forte e nella storia sportiva del paese, che vinse due Europei, un Mondiale e due medaglie olimpiche, una di argento e una di bronzo. La Jugoslavia degli anni Ottanta fu la squadra che mise più in difficoltà gli Stati Uniti, e proprio quelle difficoltà contribuirono alla formazione del leggendario Dream Team  per le Olimpiadi di Barcellona del 1992. Nel 1984 Petrovic si trasferì a Zagabria per giocare con il Cibona, dove con Aza formò una delle coppie più forti nella storia del basket locale, con medie di oltre 40 punti a partita e in molti ricordano quando ne segnò 112 all’Olimpija Ljubljana nel campionato jugoslavo. A Zagabria la squadra vinse tra le altre cose due Coppe Campioni e Drazen divenne famoso in tutto il basket europeo. Con i quattro milioni di dollari con cui il Real Madrid lo ingaggiò nel 1988 il giovane atleta fu a tutti gli effetti il giocatore più pagato e ammirato in Europa, oltre ad essere il primo a guidare una Porsche in Croazia, all’epoca ancora parte della Jugoslavia. Ma a Madrid Drazen rimase solo un anno, perché dopo gli Europei vinti in casa nel 1989 decise di affermarsi anche in NBA, imprese mai riuscita a un giocatore europeo, però a Portland non iniziò bene, infatti l’allenatore dell’epoca non lo teneva in considerazione e si trovò peraltro in squadra con cinque giocatori nel suo stesso ruolo, tutti esperti e di altissimo livello, come Danny Ainge e Clyde Drexler. Nel 1990 Petrovic fu scambiato con i New Jersey Nets, dove diventò uno dei migliori tiratori da tre punti di tutto il campionato e nel primo turno dei playoff del 1993 segnò 40 punti ai Cleveland Cavaliers, stabilendo il record individuale di marcatura ai playoff nella storia dei Nets. I Nets vennero poi eliminati dal Cleveland in quel turno, e nel giugno 1993 Petrovic tornò in Europa per giocare una partita di qualificazione agli Europei della Croazia contro la Polonia. Dopo che la Croazia vinse la partita, che si giocò a Breslavia, e la squadra nel pomeriggio del 7 giugno andò a Francoforte per tornare in aereo a Zagabria, ma Petrovic decise di tornare in macchina con la fidanzata  e un’amica. Arrivati nei pressi di Monaco, la fidanzata di Drazen,  alla guida di una Golf, non vide un rallentamento che si trovò davanti subito dopo un dosso e, a causa della pioggia, finì addosso a un camion a velocità elevata. Petrovic dormiva, ma non aveva le cinture allacciate  e, dopo il loro arrivo sul luogo dell’accaduto, gli infermieri provarono a rianimarlo ma le ferite erano troppo gravi e non sopravisse. Alla notizia della morte di Drazen i compagni di squadra, i tifosi e la Croazia rimasero completamente spiazzati. Dopo le prime stagioni di Petrovic in NBA tanti giocatore europei sono riusciti ad affermarsi nel basket americano, come il croato Toni Kukoc, che  divenne uno dei membri dei famosi Chicago Bulls di Michael Jordan, con cui vinse tre titoli, e il tedesco Dirk Nowitzki, che per risultati e è considerato il miglior giocatore europeo nella storia del campionato, infatti giocò a Dallas per ventuno anni, vincendo da protagonista il titolo del 2011.
