Just recently I asked myself an important question. Why do I, a person not usually into angst, continue to romance Solas. It’s not like it’s going to end differently. My Lavellan will always get her heart broken.
The simple answer? It’s worth it. There is a gentleness in how they treat each other that you don’t find in many real-life relationships much less in a video game. It’s soft, quiet, and tender. It’s what love looks like after years with someone you truly care about.
How can that be? Solas isn’t being honest with her. To Solas’ credit, he realizes that. He takes her to Crestwood to tell her the truth. When he realizes he can’t, he breaks it off. Which in and of itself is an act of love.
What he is honest about is his love for Lavellan. He never denies his feelings. A case in point is the aftermath of the first kiss. It would be so easy for Solas to say that he just got caught up in the moment. He doesn’t. He may say that it’s been a long time and that he thinks a relationship isn’t a good idea, but he never denies that he has feelings for her. Even when he breaks it off, he refuses to lie and say she was a casual dalliance or that he doesn’t love her.
For her part, Lavellan never pushes Solas. When he asks for time to think, she grants it. “Take all the time you need.” She understands him. He has trust issues. Getting into a relationship with her would be a big step for him. She may not know what made him that way, but she cares enough to let him decide if a relationship is something he truly wants.  She is willing to wait.
This demonstrates a respect for each other and for their budding relationship. They are honest about their feelings. They are willing to take it slow. They talk about it like adults. They go into it knowing there will be risks.
An underrated aspect of the relationship is the conversations where Solas shares his recollections of things he saw in the Fade. Solas isn’t just randomly pulling stories out of his hat. He is telling Lavellan about the things he saw that meant the most to him. He is opening up to her, trusting that she won’t laugh at him or dismiss him. For her part, she actively listens. It’s a quiet kind of loving and, for me, one of the most intimate things you can do in a relationship.
The balcony scene is another place where this plays out. Solas wants to be with Lavellan. He has come up to the balcony to tell her that. He still has reservations. He wants her but he doesn’t want to hurt her.
Lavellan knows he must be the one to make the choice. Instead of kissing him, she puts her hands behind her back. If he wants this, he will have to kiss her. He balks. She asks him not to go. Many people interpret this as begging. That’s not it. She is telling him, quietly, that if he leaves, she won’t wait any longer. “It would be kinder in the long run but losing you would…” He can’t. He loves her. He decides to take the risk.
There is also a strong spiritual component to their relationship. Solas isn’t attracted by her physical beauty. He is all about the spirit. To him she is wonderful. Someone wise. Someone who thinks before she acts. He calls her beautiful in Crestwood, but I think he is talking about her soul, not what she looks like.
There are many other small moments that give us clues as to what their relationship looks like post balcony scene. Solas attempts to comfort her at the Winter Palace by dancing or taking her in his arms. She reassures him that he can trust her. They hold hands in Crestwood. He calls her “my heart” and it’s clear she is precious to him. His voice when he speaks with her in Crestwood is intimate. It’s a vocal tenor we don’t hear anywhere else. He remonstrates with Sera when she jokes about his relationship with Lavellan.
I find it interesting that even if Lavellan is angry, when Solas finds the broken orb she isn’t fist pumping because he didn’t get what he wanted. She treats him with kindness.
He goes out of his way to tell her what they had was real – or that she was right to be angry. No matter what happened they acknowledge each other’s feelings.
Everything paints a picture of an intensely private, intimate, loving relationship. That’s what I love about it and it’s why I keep coming back for more.

Is the Dragon Age fandom still alive, or are you all romancing another traumatised elf in BG3?
I'm still hung up on Solas...
Maybe I'll make this into a series?

Okay so i know that at this point DA:D is probably never going to come out but I'm not going to stop fantasizing about the universe. They can pry it from my cold, dead, wolf jawbone gripping hands.
What is currently haunting me is the idea of Lavellan; beaten, broken, and missing an arm by the betrayal and abandonment of her Vhenan. Following in his ironic footsteps.
Inquisitor Lavellan, after everything she already had to suffer through, becoming the leader of a Dalish Rebellion uprising against a force of destruction that threatens to destroy the world. (That just so happens to be the man she loves) Uniting the Dalish clans under her banner to save this world from ruin. Just like Solas has done to save his people from the Evanuris.
It would be so painfully poetic.
Andraste uniting all the people of Thedas to fight the oppression of the Tevinter Imperium.
The Inquisition (and her) uniting all the people of Thedas to fight Corypheus.
And then. The Inquisitor. Uniting all the people of Thedas once more, becoming the champion of the dalish rebellion. Fighting to stop the world from being destroyed by Solas. Him having to watch as the cycle repeats itself over and over like it has always done. Only this time, he's the one who stands not with the people, but against them..
Ouch..

Whispers of the Heart
Solas//Lavellan
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Note: This is my first written work but I’m so excited to share it! Enjoy ★彡
Tumblr media
When she woke up, the ghost of his lips haunted her.
For a fleeting moment, Lavellan wondered if what had transpired in the fade was the result of a desire demon, one that had preyed on her innermost thoughts and had conjured such an illusion. She admitted to herself that she might have considered bargaining with such a demon for just a few more moments. However, his voice resonated in her mind, disruputing her reverie.
“We shouldn’t...it isn’t right, not even here,” Solas admonished softly.
“Wake up.”
She felt a blush tinge her cheeks as she reached up to touch her lips, memories flooding back. Yet, warmth mingled with worry, a turbulent mix settling in her stomach. What happens now? His remorse was apparent, but it couldn't change what had occurred. While this wasn't Lavellan's first venture into matters of the heart, it felt as if she were navigating these emotions for the very first time. With her mind and heart racing, a sudden knock echoed at the door.
"Inquisitor! Are you intending to spend the entire day in bed?" Cassandra's voice boomed from beyond the door. "Have you honestly forgotten our plan to journey to the Western Approach today?" Well, shit.
“I’m almost ready Cassandra! I’ll be out in just a moment!” She could hear Cassandra’s groan as she descended down the steps of the chamber. In a rush, she hastily reached for her armor, each piece fitting to her form as if second skin. Lavellan snatched her staff, fingers finding comfort in its familiar grip, as she rushed down the steps of her chambers. Stepping into the halls of Skyhold, she was met with warmth and laughter from her people. She spotted Dorian and Bull in the corner together; from an outsider's perspective it may have seemed as though they were arguing, but Lavellan noticed Bull’s smirk and the glint in Dorian’s eye. Varric was spotted near the fireplace, eating breakfast and telling stories to some of the children. She couldn’t find Cassandra, much to her relief, and decided to start walking towards the front door.
“Hey, Inquisitor! I was just telling these refugees how you killed a high dragon..with only one arrow,” Varric grinned mischievously. Lavellan chuckled at the embellishment, she knew better than to try to correct the writer, doing so would only fuel him to make the story even more exaggerated. “I also saw Cassandra coming from your chambers, I could’ve sworn that I saw smoke coming out of her ears. Know anything about that?”
"Cassandra? Well, you know how she is," she said with a nervous smile, “Anyways, are you still coming to the Western Approach with us?”
“Shit, I forgot to tell you, but there’s some business back in Kirkwall that I have to attend to. So I’ll be gone for the next week or so, but hey! I got Chuckles to fill in for me.” There was a pause. Varric kept talking but Lavellan couldn’t hear anything except her beating heart. She figured that she would have plenty of time to calculate her next move with Solas, but fate had different plans. Before she was able to respond, Bull walked past them both, carrying supplies and weapons for the journey.
“You coming or what Boss? If both of us are late, the Seeker will hang us”. Lavellan hesitated for a moment, torn between her duty as Inquisitor and her feelings for Solas. Bull’s voice broke through her inner turmoil, and she couldn’t help but chuckle at his joke, as it waved through the intensity of her emotions.
“Alright Bull. Lead the way,” she replied, giving Varric a small smile. With each step that she took with Bull towards the entrance of Skyhold, Lavellan couldn’t shake the memories of her encounter with Solas. It was a feeling she would carry, a puzzle to unravel when the time was right; for now, the weight of her duty was her priority. Going down the steps of the courtyard, she sees soldiers mounting their horses, carrying supplies to the carts, and saying their farewells to their loved ones. She spots Cassandra, saddling up her horse and looking around before adding a book into her satchel. Bull walks ahead of Lavellan, adding his supplies to the cart. She stops at the bottom of the steps and breathes in. For the first time since Haven, she felt at peace, and for a moment, a voice in her head says home.
“Sleep well?” Lavellan's heart skipped a beat as she turned to see Solas standing there, a relaxed smile on his face. She had hoped to escape his presence for just a little while longer, yet here he was.
"I suppose that depends on one's definition of 'well,'" she replied cautiously, her guard up, but her curiosity undeniable, “But I won’t deny that it was…nothing I had ever experienced before. On a number of levels.” He laughed, but not in a mocking or a teasing way; it was a laugh that was pure and free. His eyes crinkled at the corners, and his lips curled into a wide, infectious smile. Was his smile always this infectious? Regardless of the coldness of the mountains, it was suddenly very warm. Both of the elves smiled at each other, yet there was a shift in Solas’ demeanor; a barrier that suddenly went up.
“I apologize, I shouldn’t have—”
“Inquisitor Lavellan, if you wouldn't mind, I would like to leave sometime today,” Cassandra interrupted. Lavellan's heart sank at the shattered moment. She turned to face the stern Seeker, who clearly had no patience for any further delay. Solas and Lavellan exchanged a quick, knowing look as they quickly joined the others, leaving the warmth of their brief encounter behind.
As she mounted her horse, the rest of the Inquisition’s people loudly cheered and clapped as the party went forward towards their destination. It was only moments after they had exited the gates when Bull steered his horse towards Lavellan.
“So…you and Solas, huh?”

This is going to be a very, very long fic, but I've been working on it for very long and I'm finally ready to start posting it. Have this piece of my soul and all. Post game Lavellan and Solas, big adventure story, slow burn romance, break up resentment, many characters from the game make appearances. The whole fic is plotted out to the end, but as for length, there's no end in site.
Ship: Solas x f!Lavellan, original character
Characters: Solas, Female Lavellan, Elgar'nan
Additional Tags: Story Arc, Romance, Slow Burn, Adventure & Romance, Lavellan/Solas Angst, long read, Enemies to Lovers, Lovers To Enemies, Exes
Summary: Two years after leaving the Inquisition, and two years after being left behind by Solas for the final time, Sarissa is adjusting to life in her clan in Wycome. She's no longer First of her clan, no longer Inquisitor, no longer Herald of Andraste - and has no idea what that leaves her with. As she's trying to figure this out, the elvhen god Elgar'nan sets his sights on her as the key to reclaiming the world he lost to the Dread Wolf, Fen Harel. Sarissa must team up (very unwillingly) with Solas or risk letting the world fall into ruin again.

My heart,
Burns, with the pain of your withdrawal
Hurts, distrustful and scarred with your betrayal
Bleeds, until there's nothing more, emptied since you went away

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that when it comes to Inky, this is the first time in Solas’ life he’s actually been in love?
I mean the flirting and the great kisses could have more to do with playing whatever version of The Game went on in the court of the Evanuris. I’m guessing flirting and sex were just tools there. Solas is very sexy. I’m sure he was popular. I’m not sure love played a part in anything though.
He’s more than capable of love. He loves Mythal (who is probably using him). He loves his people. But romantic love? I’m not sure he’s ever experienced that before.
He has an easy time with flirting and innuendo but not real feelings.
Whether she is telling him she will protect him anyway she has to or that he doesn’t need to grieve alone he’s always flustered when Inky lets him know that she cares about him. This is not a man used to having the support of a loving partner.
His “ar lath ma, vhenan” really seems to come out of nowhere. In my experience that quick of a declaration is usually made by someone who has never been in love before.
He kisses the Inquisitor differently in Crestwood. Before it’s all bend her back and kiss her passionately. In Crestwood it’s gentle and measured. His eyes are closed. He’s lost in the moment. That’s the kiss of a man in love.
Even in Trespasser he seems to be barely in control of his emotions. He says he wouldn’t wish his fate on an enemy much less someone he “once” cared for - implying those feeling are in the past - but I don’t buy it.
Depending on where you fall on the “did they or didn’t they line” his saying he would not “lay with her under false pretenses” is meant to reassure the Inky that he loved her then, he loves her now and he did not use sex as a tool to manipulate her.
I just get a “this is the first time I’ve ever felt this way” vibe off him in every scene.
Anyway. I would be interested in other people’s thoughts on the matter.

THROUGH TIME : II
Solas x Lavellan
Plot: After Solas breaks her heart the second time during the exalted council. The inquisitor found herself unable to move on. After she stumbles on the remnants of the time magic used in redcliffe. She decides to go back, and see if there's anything she could have done differently that will persuade him not to leave her this time around.
Note: I swear the pacing gets better from here... Or the next chapter.... Dhdbdbsbbsbs
--------------------------------------------------
When Aria opened her eyes the world was gray, a black and white lull as she felt strange yet familiar hands supporting all of her weight. An older elven woman singing an ancient lullaby while rocking her back and forth.
She was back to when she was an infant. Being cradled by her mom at camp Lavellan. She missed her dearly and she found herself relaxing into her arms even more. The stress and burdens of the time she had left behind her growing weary.
With the knowledge she had of her previous life, she did things she wouldn't have back when she was a child. She studied more magic, being drawn to books no one of her age would even be able to comprehend. She did all this in secret of course, afraid that if she does something differently in broad daylight, things would go differently and her hopes of meeting Solas would be crushed.
She laid in hammocks when her basic mage training was done. Staring at the open skies thinking of the breach she had sealed from before. Wondering where, under the same stretch of stars she was looking up from, did the Dread Wolf lie in slumber.
On her open schedules she buried herself, writing on a notebook. Taking note of what she remembers from her previous life. So that she may never forget and make a mistake. Yet in every single page she wrote her mind drifted off to Solas' voice.
"Ar'lath ma vhenan"
It was around this time of her previous life when the clan picked out people to go to the conclave. She had done everything concerning others the same up to this point. There was a fear in her heart that she may not be chosen. She knew she can't have messed up. Yet the gnawing feeling under her toes, the quickening of her heart beat and the beads of sweat that formed on her for head as she paced in her tent was undeniable proof of her anxiousness.
The decision came that afternoon. Her and a handful of other people were sent. And soon she was on her way to the conclave.
"Tell me why we shouldn't kill you now" Cassandra said circling her as she sat on her knees on the cold floor of the cell. She was angry. Aria knew why. Back then when this first happened she was terrified and confused, now she just felt... Relieved. She is talking to her friend again! She can't show that however. So she steeled herself and forced a frown. "The conclave is destroyed, everyone who attended is dead. Except for you"
Aria had wanted to jump in her arms then to be giddy and cry as she encircled her friend in her in an embrace. But she musn't.
"What do you mean everyone's dead?"
She asked, the exact same reaction she had before.
Cassandra snatched her arm and yanked it high. Her expression on of anger.
"Explain, this" She spat.
"I can't"
The rest was history, one she had lived through before.
Soon she was running through the battlements "We must help them" Cassandra says in earnest.
Aria knew who she was referring to. How could she not.
They rounded the corner and there he was. His staff glowing with magic as he kept the demons back. Aria sprung into action. And she noted that if there was but one difference here than her first life, it's that she was undeniably more trained. More prepared... More... Experienced.
There were a lot of demons, and it should be frightening to her. But when she knows that he's here now, how can anything else matter?
The fight was over before she knew it. And she felt his hand over hers, it was firm, the sense of urgency notable. Yet she felt her eyes water at that simply notion. He can't believe he's here now. The warmth of his skin radiating to her arms outweighed the slight sting of the mark that was once again bestowed upon her.
Solas' expression was tight, with the slightest tinge of a frown as he raised her hand towards the rift.
"Quickly, before more come through!"
It took seconds but it felt an eternity till the rift has closed. And she longed for that hand once again.
"What did you do?" She asked looking at him. There's was a tinge of pain in her chest. A prick from a needle dancing around her heart that she can't hug him, can't explain to him what happened. That she has to act out lines she memorized and rehearsed from before.
"I did nothing" Solas smiles and her heart melted "The credit is yours".
His voice, she wanted to hear it more.
"I closed that thing.. How?"
She tried not to let her longing show but ultimately failed when her voice came out unsure, and a little bit sad. It wouldn't be out of place however, not with everything that's going on right now.
"Whatever magic opened that breach in the sky also placed that mark on your hand. I theorized that the mark may be able to close the breach that have opened in the breach's wake. And it seems I was correct"
For a split second Aria lost the facade, and a flash of knowing glided through her eyes. It was gone in an instant. She knew it was him. Knew that he gave Corypheus the orb which led to all of this, though unintentionally. She didn't matter to him at this point of time. Nobody did. But if she does things right, that will surely change.
"Meaning it could close the breach itself"
Cassandra says, voice laced with hope as she neared the group from behind Lavellan.
"Possibly. It seems you hold the key to our salvation" He nods.
And there was something screaming inside her. Something banging in the deepest parts of her mind. Yelling at her to hug him, to just... Hold him and not let him go so he wouldn't leave her.
'Don't leave me, not now'
She remembered herself saying, as if it was recorded in a loop. Wrenching her heart everytime it played.
"Good to know. Here I thought we'd be ass deep in demons forever. Varric Tethras, rouge, storyteller, occasionally unwanted tag along"
'Oh varric, I could just hug you' she thought to herself, and absentmindedly she smiled. Last time she saw him was at the exalted council after he made her a comtese.
"Are you with the chantry or... " She trailed off.
Solas chuckled and it made her heart skip a beat. And she smiled wider, not tempting to look his direction, afraid her resolve of putting distance would falter if she did. Her eyes we're watering no doubt. The warmth of having everyone back after they've all left skyhold took a weight off her chest.
Varric, who was now arguing with Cassandra on why he needs to stay didn't notice the smile. But solas did.
The mage leaned on his staff and eyed Aria with interest. There was something about her, something... Foreign, and powerful... Well above him in his state right now or any three of the other party members combined.
And that look she gave him earlier, it was quick, but there definitely is something strange about this woman who now bears his mark.
He cleared his throat .
"My name is Solas if there are to be any introductions. I am pleased to see you still live"
'Im just pleased to see you' she said to herself. Her mouth opened to say it out loud but she caught herself.
"He means I kept that mark from killing you while you slept"
That slipped her mind. Knowing he was there watching her made her feel warm. Although... She knows it wasn't her, it was the mark he was looking at. He didn't care about her at this point in time.
"You seem to know a great deal about it all"
She wrote this down, she knew when to come in.
"My travels have allowed me to learn much of the fade, much to the experience of any circle mage."
Yes, because you aren't just Solas.
"I came to offer any help I can give"
"That's a commendable attitude" She said.
But it's you knowing you messed up somewhere. Knowing you intended for Corypheus to die but he didn't, and now all of this is happening.
"Only a sensible one. Though it seems sense appears to be in short supply right now. Cassandra," He turns to the seeker "You're prisoner is a mage yet I can hardly imagine any mage capable of holding such power"
She heard his slight emphasis on power and she pales, he can't find out. Not yet. If it means she must perform worse then she will. Paying it no mind and choosing to appear not to notice it she merely followed Cassandra to the forward camp.
This was all dangerous, but she missed the warmth of having people around.
