Spent the day working on my driveshaft. One of the universal joints had a scratchy feeling bearing cap. When we took it off, it was very dry inside with a little dirt and rust. They were not greasable, so I went to the local Napa Auto Parts and snagged two new U-joints.
In the end, it took almost 10 hours of me and my dad trying to re-figure-out how to do proper pressing and accounting for mistakes.

This BMW X5 came to us with an annoying complaint: whenever the vehicle accelerated, it would be accompanied by a clunky/shuddering noise. A bit of diagnosis showed us that the driveshaft center shaft bearing and the flex disc were ruined. What is a center shaft bearing? The driveshaft of a rear-wheel or a four-wheel drive is a precision-balanced component that supplies power from the transmission to the rear wheels. The two sections of the driveshaft are connected by a center support bearing, which is a metal bracket with a solid-rubber machined bearing on the inside. The bearing is designed to keep both parts of the driveshaft in place and reduce harmonic vibration as the vehicle accelerates/decelerates. What is a flex disc? A flex disc is a vibration dampener that acts as the buffer between the transmission's output shaft and the driveshaft leading back to the car's differential. A lot of European brands use flex discs across all models instead of the U joints favoured by Japanese cars. . . . . #bmwx5 #bmw #rearwheeldrive #4x4 #suv #flexdisc #driveshaft #bearing #germangarage #germancars #fixingcars #onecaratatime #autoshop #autorepair #mechanic #dealeralternative #manandmachine #justkeepdriving (at Man & Machine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfGsP-KvcJE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When Do You Replace The Center Support Bearing Of Your Car?
A center support bearing is mostly used in heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and other rear-drive vehicles. It is a drivetrain bearing whose main purpose is to serve as a support handle for the drive shaft and metal shaft. It goes along the underside of the vehicle and transfers power from the vehicle’s transmission to the rear differential transferring the energy to the wheels. The central support bearing serves as a crucial link between the transmission and the rear differential, facilitating the connection. Positioned within the central support bearing is the drive shaft, which benefits from its presence by gaining a degree of flexibility. This arrangement effectively mitigates excessive strain on the various components of the driveline.
