Drug Abuse in Guelph

An important message that I believe that the City of Guelph and the University of Guelph should promote and focus on is the major issue of drug abuse.  Drug abuse is a very prevalent issue in Guelph, yet I haven’t seen much being done or said about it.  I have found many news articles (linked below) that revolved around drug issues in Guelph. Guelph has issues specifically with cocaine, crystal meth, as well as prescription drugs (opioids).  Drug abuse and addiction are extremely harmful for the user it is as well very painful for the friends and family of the user.  Many people overdose and die off from these drugs, this is especially true now with the rise of the fentanyl crisis.  People also end up ruining their lives because of drugs, going from stable and healthy lifestyles to being unemployed and out on the street. High amounts of drug abuse and addiction are also very problematic for the community, as it leads to higher crime rates and a general feeling of fear and anxiety.  Drug addicts are often involved in crimes such as break-and-enters, and shoplifting and other forms of theft to support their drug habits.  All of these issues could be prevented if people weren’t addicted to drugs and abusing them.  So, what can be done to help prevent people from starting to use drugs or helping people quit them?  This is a very difficult question to answer and it requires many steps, but I believe that an easy and effective place to start is through anti-drug messages in street art and graffiti.  Street art has more power and influence than most people realize.

I believe that there are a few ways to go about doing anti-drug street art and graffiti in Guelph, as well as some obstacles to overcome so that the message can be successfully and effectively conveyed in an appropriate manner.  The biggest obstacle is that we want to send the message without using an overly negative, graphic, and intense pieces of art.  While graphic and intense pieces of street art and graffiti may cause someone to think twice before doing a drug for the first time, it does not look good on the community.  This art may cause people to feel even more unsafe in their own communities.

I believe for anti-drug street art and graffiti to be effective and permissible it should be subtle and simple.  I will provide examples of what I mean below.

I find that all of these are perfect examples of what could be done in Guelph to raise awareness for the issue.  Furthermore, I believe street art that displays the name and possibly the address of rehab centers could help persuade addicts to start rehab and turn their lives around for the better.  Street art similar to these pieces should be placed in downtown Guelph, as well as in other places in the city that are known for high levels of drug abuse and addiction to help combat the issue.

Je suis Venus

So we’re staying in Great Barrington in the Berkshires this weekend. Just went to the local farmers market and got some treats for lunch. Though the caramelized onion and gruyere hand pie did not make it as far as the car, we still have plenty of local fruit, cheese, and bread. Before lunch I decided to have a shower, where I got to spend a few quiet moments gazing into the full-length mirror at my naked body. This is a big deal only because I’ve been struggling with the 20 pounds I’ve gained in the past 6 months from the chemo drugs themselves and from being deconditioned after the brain surgery, paralysis, and resulting weeks in rehab in the beginning of the year.

I confess that I struggle with the same body image issues that plague many women in our times. Bad enough to have terminal cancer but do also gain 20 pounds? Talk about unfair! Which is worse, the cancer of the weight? Seriously, on some days this question can be very real. But this morning, gazing at myself in the mirror I was surprised to find that instead of feeling anxious about my body, my too big breasts and too curvy belly, I was instead stuck with a vision of the Venus of Willendorf, 5 inches of feminine power sculpted in clay in another lifetime. She’s one of a handful of tiny female figurings made by people in what is now Austria ~22,000 years ago. It is theorized that she represents fertility or universal womanhood, and that a her features are exaggerated as a result. All I can tell you is that I felt an “ah-ha!” moment, connecting my image in the mirror to this tiny statue from long, long, ago. I recognized me in her, and her in me. Even if super idealized, I find the idealization of luscious curves beautiful, especially if the curves are far, far more generous than our current standards of beauty. So today I join the family of Venuses that have gone before. My curves are beautiful, luscious, and worthy of acceptance, even celebration. I love this connection to the past. I breath in our collective anxieties about our bodies and breathe out a compassionate connection to all women of all times, ages, and sizes. I vow to dwell in this feeling of acceptance. Je suis Venus!

A city man who was found with a gun, cocaine and other contraband in his home last January was sentenced to a year in jail Wednesday after pleading out in Berkshire Superior Court. The plea hearing for Austyn M. Lanphear, 22, had to be rescheduled from its original Dec. 31 date after Lanphear failed to appear for the 9 a.m. event, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant.

On Wednesday, Lanphear, who had been taken into custody in the meantime, told Judge Daniel Ford he had transportation issues that prevented him from getting to court that day.

On Jan. 10, 2018, members of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force were staking out Lanphear’s home after obtaining search warrants for his him, his home and car, on suspicion he was using his home to distribute drugs.

Police waited until Lanphear left his home to take him into custody, out of concern he may have weapons inside. He left about 9:30 p.m. and was soon pulled over by police.

Inside the home, police found about 12.7 grams of cocaine, a loaded .45 caliber handgun, some other rounds of ammunition, three 30-milligram oxycodone pills and other evidence including a digital scale and other dealer paraphernalia.
