Die 50 Ultimativen Halloween Specials:

Themen-Folgen gibt es von Fernsehserien immer wieder, doch in Zeiten von Krisen, kürzeren Seasons und immer weniger Network-TV werden sie immer seltener. Während Horror-Serien und Events uns immer wieder gerne präsentiert werden (siehe etwa das diesjährige Huluween-Event), gehen uns die guten alten Fest-Folgen in Serien zunehmend aus, doch keine Panik, es gibt immer noch genug Klassiker aus denen man auswählen kann.

Hier meine Liste der 50 Ultimativen Halloween-Specials, mit denen man die Stunden bis Allerheiligen herunterzählen kann. Und ja, Platz 1 ist geschummelt und ja, Horror-Specials kommen nicht auf diese Liste, sondern tatsächlich nur Folgen, in denen Halloween auch wirklich thematisiert wird, weil die Ereignisse an Halloween spielen und entsprechend Horror und Kostümparties angesagt sind!

50. Phineas and Ferb: Season 4, Episode 19: Drusselsteinoween (2013)

„Phineas and Ferb“ hat mehrere Halloween-Episoden zu bieten, doch diese entführt uns nach Drusselstein, wo Vanessa eine Halloween-Party gibt, während ihr Vater (wieder einmal) Familiengeheimnisse/Traumata mit Perrys Hilfe aufarbeitet.

49. The Spectacular Spider-Man: Season 1, Episode 9: The Uncertain Principle (2008)

Inhaltlich war „The Spectacular Spider-Man“ ehrlich gesagt die beste Spider-Man-Animations-Serie, auch wenn der Animationsstil ein Kind seiner Zeit war und ein paar canonische Freiheiten sie in der Liebe der meisten Leute hinter den 90er-Jahre-Serie, die ein Gesamtkunstwerk war, zurück stehen lassen. Die Halloween-Episode beweist aber warum die Skripts in dieser Serie bis heute als ganz besonders gelten: Spidey clasht an Halloween mit dem Grünen Kobold (wem auch sonst?) und Tombstone, während eine neue Gefahr aus dem Weltall schon am Horizont lauert.

48. Young Justice: Season 1, Episode 18: Secrets (2011)

Früher bevor die Serie eingestellt, wiederbelebt, und uns hier zu Lande daraufhin bis auf weitereres für immer vorenthalten wurde, war „Young Justice“ die perfekte Animationsserie um das DC-Universum kennenzulernen und hier beschäftigen wir uns mit der magischeren Seite diseses Kosmos. Eigentlich wollten Artemis und Zatanna nur eine Mädels-Nacht zu Halloween genießen, doch leider ändert der mysteriöse Harm alles.

47. The Simpsons: Season 27, Episode 4: Halloween of Horror (2015)

Nach Jahren immer schlechter werdenden „Treehouse of Horror“-Episoden hatten die Simpson zum ersten Mal eine unabhängige im Canon stattfindende Halloween-Episode gemacht, und diese war um so vieles besser als das, was sie uns ansonsten zuletzt zu diesem Thema vorgesetz hatten, und wäre alleine deswegen bemerkenswet, aber da sie auch das erste Mal Halloween im Canon-Setting behandelt ist sie doppelt bemerkenswert, da zur Abwechslung mal wieder frische Ideen mit dabei waren.

46. Alf: Season 2, Episode 6: Some Enchanted Evening (1987)

Was machen ungewöhnlich aussehende Wesen an Halloween? Richtig, sie freuen sich darüber, dass sie endlich unter Menschen gehen dürfen, genau wie der Haus-Außerirdische der Familie Tanner in dieser Folge von „Alf“, in der sich der gute Gordon als wahrer Partyknaller erweist. Zu Schade, dass nicht immer Halloween sein kann…

35-45. The Simpsons: Season 3-12: Treehouse of Horror II-XI (1991-2000)

In Staffel 2 begannen „Die Simpsons“ ihre alljährige Halloween-Tradition der „Treehouse of Horror“-Anthologie-Folgen, in denen ursprünglich Bart und andere in seinem Baumhaus Gruselgeschichten ausgetauscht haben. Diese Rahmenhandlung verschwand bald aus der Serie, doch die jährliche Halloween-Folge mit dem Muster von mehreren Kurzgeschichten, die außerhalb des Canons stattfinden, und aneinander gereiht werden und oft Parodien auf bekannte Storymuster darstellen, blieb bis heute erhalten. Wie im Fall der Serie selbst, nahm auch die Qualität der Halloween Specials im Laufe der Jahre ab, doch die goldenen Jahre bleiben nach wie vor empfehlenswert. Für diese Liste habe ich Treehouse II bis XI ausgewählt, weil die meisten Klassiker in diesen Folgen zu finden sind.

34. That 70s Show:  Season 3, Episode 4: Too Old to Trick or Treat, Too Young to Die (2001)

Die zweite Halloween-Episode aus den „Wilden 70ern“ ist abgedrehter und wilder als die erste vergleichsweise Standart-Halloween-Folge. Hier gibt es mehr Referenzen und mehr Verrücktheiten und Spaß macht es allemal Fez als Frunkenfutter-Lookalike vom Dach fallen zu sehen.

33. Brooklyn Nine Nine: Season 1, Episode 6: Halloween (2013)

Schon in der 1. Staffel begründet „Brooklyn 99“ seine Tradition des jährlichen Halloween-Coups, während dem die Polizisten einmal die Verbrecher sind und etwas stehlen müssen um zu beweisen, dass sie besser als ihre Kollegen sind. Spätere Halloween-Folgen der Serie werden zunehmend komplexer, doch die erste ist vielleicht die gelungenste, weil sie zwar clever ist, aber noch nicht angeberisch clever versuchen muss alles, was zuvor geschehen ist, zu übertrumpfen, sondern einefach nur Spaß machen darf.

32. The Big Bang Theory: Season 6, Episode 5: The Holographic Excitation (2012)

Diese mittlere Halloween-Episode aus der „Big Bang Theory“ stammt aus der goldenen Zeit, in der die Serie Nerdtum und Beziehungsitcom zu vereinen verstand und das Beste aus den weiblichen und den männlichen Hauptfiguren herauszuholen verstand. Außerdem kann man hier Howard und Bernadette als Papa Schlumpf und Schlumpfine bewundern, genauso wie eine Tardis im Comicbuchladen und Sheldons Vorstellung von einem Kompromiss in Paar-Kostümfragen miterleben.

31. Modern Family: Season 6: Episode 6: Halloween 3: Awesome Land (2014)

Halloween wird in „Modern Family“ alle zwei Jahre gefeiert und ist Claires Lieblingsfeiertag, doch nachdem sie die Nachbarschaft traumatisiert hat (und ihrem Mann vor zwei Jahren das Fürchten gelehrt hat), muss sie hier das Ruder abgeben, was ihr gar nicht liegt, allen anderen, allen voran den Zusehern aber durchaus gewaltigen Spaß macht, umso mehr nachdem ihr Ehrgeiz geweckt wird. Plus der Waldo-Witz aus dieser Episode gehört zu den absurdesten aber auch besten Gags der ganzen Serie.

30. Community: Season 4, Episode 2: Paranormal Parentage (2013)

Gewisse Fankreise mögen über Staffel 4 schimpfen, doch das bedeutet nicht, dass man sie nicht mögen kann. In ihrer vierten Halloween-Episode gerät die Lerngruppe in ein wahrhaftiges Geister-Haus nachdem Pierce das Haus seines Vaters geerbt hat und umfunktioniert um den anderen eine Lektion zu erteilen, was besser als gedacht funktioniert, weil er selbst dabei ebenfalls etwas lernt. Typisch „Community“ also, mit einer ordentlichen Portion Halloween gleich dazu.

29. Friends: Season 8: Episode 6: The One with the Halloween Party (2001)

Die einzige Halloween-Episode der Serie ist ein ganz großer Klassiker, nicht nur deswegen aber auch weil sich Catwoman und Supergirl in dieser Episode zum ersten Mal treffen, was nicht nur Phoebe verwirrt. Relativ spät im Leben der Serie ist „The One with the Halloween Party“ trotzdem ein Highlight, das sich keiner entgehen lassen sollte.

28. How I met your Mother: Season 1: Episode 6: Slutty Pumpkin (2005)

Mit der ersten Halloween-Folge von „How I met your Mother“ begann der steile Aufstieg der Serie zu dem Kult als der sie heute gilt, als Ted Robin und den Zusehern zum ersten Mal die Geschichte um die geheimnisvolle Kürbisschlampe zum Besten gibt und uns erklärt warum er immer als Wahlkarte auf die selbe Party geht. Ein Must-See unter den Halloween-Specials aller Jahrzehnte.

27. How I met your Mother: Season 7, Episode 8: The Slutty Pumpkin Returns (2011)

Und sechs Staffeln später bekommt der Zuseher die geheimnisvolle Kürbisschlampe endlich zu sehen und zwar in Form von Katie Holmes, was wohl keiner erwartet hätte. Nein, sie ist natürlich nicht die Mutter, aber das hat im Grunde ja auch niemand jemals erwartet, denn in dieser Folge geht es nicht darum die Richtige zu finden, sondern endlich bereit zu sein eine Wunschvorstellung loszulassen, die man vor Jahren einmal verpasst hat und daher niemals vergessen konnte.

26. Community: Season 3, Episode 5: Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps (2011)

Wenn Britta ihre Psychologie-Kenntnisse anwendet, dann ist es an der Zeit zu fliehen, doch in dieser Halloween-Folge weiß nur Jeff, dass sie auf der Suche nach dem Pyschopathen in ihrer Lerngruppe ist, indem sie alle Gruselgeschichten zu Halloween erzählen lässt. Wer auf verstörende Einblicke in die Psyche seiner Lieblingscharaktere steht, der wird mit dieser Folge reich bedient, so viel ist sicher.

25. Two and Half Men Season 3, Episode 6: Hi Mr. Horned One (2005)

Wieder einmal hat sich Charlie Harper mit der falschen Frau eingelassen, doch da es sich um eine Halloween-Episode handelt, sind die Konsequenzen etwas anderer Natur als sonst. Ob echt oder nicht wird unklar gelassen und ausgerechnet Evelyn rettet am Ende den Tag in dieser vermutlich witzigsten Folge der Serie.

24. The Munsters: Season 1, Episode 1: Monster Masquerade (1964)

Ja, die erste Folge von den „Munsters“ war passenderweise eine Halloween-Episode, was das Kennenlernen dieser besonderen Familie erleichtert hat, da sie sich ja zu Halloween nicht besonders von normalen Menschen unterscheiden. Wahre Werte werden hier in einer Episode entdeckt, in der man sich schnell zu fragen beginnt was eigentlich genau ein Monster ausmacht und was eben nicht.

23. WandaVision: Episode 6: All-New Halloween Spooktacular! (2021)

In dieser Halloween-Episode erreicht Wandas Sitcom-Welt die Zeiten von „Malcolm in the Middle“ und wir sehen zum ersten Mal die Comic-Akuraten-Looks der gesamten Wanda-Vision-Familie. Inklusive Bruder Pietro, der anders ist als Wanda ihn in Erinnerung hat. Obwohl wir mit dem X-Men-Crossover offenbar getrollt wurden (aber bis mir das Gegenteil bewiesen wurde, hat es trotzdem stattgefunden!), mindert das nicht die Freude an dieser ganz speziellen auf andere Weise als für Halloween-Folgen üblich gruseligen Episode.

22. Riverdale: Season 4, Episode 4: Halloween (2019)

Obwohl es recht viele Horror-gethemten Folgen in „Riverdale“ gab, die den Zusehern wie Halloween-Folgen vorgekommen sind, gab es nur zwei „richige“ Halloween-Folgen. Die erste von ihnen spielt in der 4. Staffel und lässt Betty Freitag 13. nacherleben, während Jughead lebendig begraben wird und Archie ein Superheldenkostüm tragen darf, und Toni ernsthaft beginnt in Frage zu stellen auf was sie sich da eigenltich genau eingelassen hat, als sie sich auf Cheryl eingelassen hat (siehe Jasons Leiche als Dinnergast, Julian, und Nana Roses Geschichten).

21. Glee: Season 2, Episode 5: The Rocky Horror Glee Show (2011)

Will Schuesters fehlgeleiteter Versuch „The Rocky Horror“-Show als Musical im zweiten Jahr des Glee-Clubs zu inszenrieren hat uns dieses Highlight der „Glee“-Geschichte beschert, indem John Stamos mit Motorad auf die Bühne fährt, Emma ganz neue Seiten an sich entdeckt, und Körperbewusstsein und Selbstbewusstsein das große zentrale Thema sind, das alle Handlungsstränge zusammenhält.

20. Monk: Season 4, Episode 2: Mr. Monk goes Home again (2005)

Halloween bringt für Adrian Monk gestohlene Halloween-Süßigkeiten mit sich (was auch sonst?), in einer rührenden Episode, die Herzen bricht, als die beiden Monk-Brüder auf eine Wiedervereinigung mit ihrem Vater hoffen, zu der es aber natürlich nicht kommt.

19. Castle: Season 2, Episode 6: Vampire Weekened (2009)

Richard Castle muss sich in dieser ersten Halloween-Episode der Krimi-Serie einem Vampirfetisch stellen, der mehr als nur einen Mord nach sich zieht, zugleich seinen eigenen Halloween-Ball planen und erinnert die Zuseher in diesem frühen Highlight der Serie schmerzhaft an das viel zu frühe Ende von Nathan Fillons vorhergehenden Serie „Firefly.“

18. E. R. : Season 3, Episode 5: Ghosts (1996)

„E.R.“ hatte mehrere Halloween-Episode, doch in dieser ersten erfahren wir alles über den tatsächlichen Geist, der im County General spukt, während Doug und Carol echten Horror erleben als sie Außendienst in schlechter Gegend in einem auseinanderfallenden Ärztemobil schieben müssen.

17. Lucifer: Season 2, Episode 6: Monster (2016)

In der Halloween-Episode von „Lucifer“ geht Maze mit Trixie auf Süßigkeiten-Tour, während ihre Eltern einen Mordfall untersuchen und Lucifer zu sehr unter seinen jünsten Taten leidet um sich zu konzentrieren. In dieser Folge geht es darum die Masken, die man trägt, abzulegen und dazu passend ist das auch die Folge, in der Lucifer Linda sein wahres Gesicht zeigt, was die Natur der Serie für immer verändern sollte.

16. Charmed:Season 3, Episode 4: All Halliwell’s Eve (2000)

In dieser Zeitreise-Episode verschlägt es die Mächtigen Drei in die Vergangenheit, wo sie den Ursprüngen von Halloween, Traditionen, und der Magie auf den Grund gehen müssen um unwissentlich ihre eigene Familie zu retten. Außerdem verkleidet sich Cole in dieser Folge für die Kostümparty als Engel, was ihr einen Extra-Pluspunkt einbringt.

15. Once Upon a Time: Season 7, Episode 4: Beauty (2017)

Die einzige offizielle Halloween-Episode der Serie gehört zur letzten Staffel, in der ja bekanntlich alles anders ist, weil ein neuer Fluch alte und neue Charaktere ereilt hat. Während Halloween das Familiendrama in der Gegenwart verstärkt, efahren wir in den Flashbacks und dem Herzstück der Episode was eigentlich mit Belle passiert ist und wie Rumpels Happy-End aussehen könnte.

14. DC‘s Legends of Tomorrow: Season 3, Episode 4: Phone Home (2017)

In der Halloween-Episode der Serie wird alles auf die 80er gestellt, als Ray aus der Zeitlinie gelöscht wird, nachdem er sich als Kind mit einem Baby-Dominator angefreundet hat. Die E.T.-Hommage gehört zu den Highlights der 3. Staffel und spricht das breite Publikum genauso an wie Hardcore Legends-Fans und ist daher Pflichtprogramm für alle.

13. The Flash: Season 6, Episode 4: There will be Blood (2019)

Diese Halloween-Episode aus dem Arrowverse legt ihren Schwerpunkt auf Neo-Showrunner-Eric Wallaces Vorliebe für Horror und setzt daher stark auf den Bloodwork-Handlungsstrang, der wenn wir ehrlich sind durchaus ganz gut zu Halloween passt. Wenn nicht viel mehr, so ist diese Folge wenigstens Beweis dafür, dass nicht alles unter Eric Wallace schlecht war, zumindest zu Beginn seiner Herrschaft noch nicht.

12. American Horror Story: Asylum: Episode 2: Tricks and Treats (2012)

Passend zum Halloween-Thema stellt die zweite Folge der zweiten Staffel einen Exorzimus in den Mittelpunkt der Handlung, während Bloody Face sich durch Gegenwart und Vergangenheit slasht und ein Fluchtversuch unternommen wird.

11. The Vampire Diaries: Season 1, Episode 7: Haunted (2009)

In „The Vampire Diaries“ gibt es mehrere Halloween-Folgen, doch nicht alle davon spielen zu Halloween. Diese tut es auf jeden Fall, und die Halloween-Party, auf der es drunter und drüber geht, ist ein wichtiger Wendepunkt in der Handlung der gesamten Serie (Matt wird noch in der letzten Staffel über alles, was hier geschieht, jammern).

10. Angel:  Season 5, Episode 5: Life of the Party (2003)

Lornes geniale Idee sich den Schlaf entfernen zu lassen führt dazu, dass alles, was er sagt, wahr ist. Und ja, es gab diesen Plot schon mal mit Willow in der 4. Staffel von Mutterserie „Buffy“ ein paar Jahre zuvor, aber die Folge ist trotzdem gut, wird hier doch einmal eine dunklere Seite von Lorne offenbart, plus wieviele Serien würden sich trauen jemanden wortwörtlich sein Revier markieren zu lassen? Ja, genau - man kann mit dieser Folge also durchaus seinen Spaß haben.

9. Stranger Things: Season 2, Episode 2: Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak (2017)

„Stranger Things“ ist natürlich eine Horror-Serie, aber es gibt trotzdem eine Extra-Halloween-Folge in der zweiten Staffel, an der sich die Nerds als Ghostbusters verkleiden (mit dem Hindernis, dass niemand Winston sein will) und die legendäre Halloween-Party der älteren Kids stattfindet, die das Liebesleben sämtlicher Beteiligter für immer auf den Kopf gestellt hat. Ach ja, und natürlich gibt es auch Monster in Hawkins, denn immerhin ist es „Stranger Things“.

8. Supernatural Season 14, Episode 4:: Mint Condition (2018)

Ein spätes Highlight von „Supernatural“ ist die zweite Halloween-Episode, die ganze zehn Jahre nach der esten ausgestrahlt wurde und vielleicht die letzte wirklich gute Einzelepisode der Serie ist. Dean fiktive Lieblings-Horror-Filmreihe steht hier im Mittelpunkt und so verbeugt sich SPN ironisch vor „Halloween“ (der Franchise, nicht dem Fest), wenn Dean seinen Lieblingsslasher-Killer bekämpfen darf.

6+7. American Horror Story : Season 1, Episode 4+5:  Halloween 1+2 (2011)

Halloween ist die einzige Nacht des Jahres in der die Geister den Murder House Grund verlassen können, daher hat sich die Serie entschieden dieser Nacht gleich einen Zweiteiler zu widmen, der zu den ganz großen Highlight der sowieso überragenden 1. Staffel von „American Horror Story“ zählt.

5. Supernatural: Season 4, Episode 7:  It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester (2008)

Wie die meisten Horror-Serien hatte „Supernatural“ nur wenige Halloween-Folgen. Wenn die Serie nicht 15 Jahre gelaufen wäre, wäre die aus den vierten vermutlich die einzige geblieben. Und warum auch nicht? Hexen die Samhain persönlich heraufbeschwören und so die Apokalypse einen Schritt näher bringen haben es durchaus in sich und bleiben der Welt auch gerne in guter Erinnerung.

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4, Episode 4:Fear, Itself (1999)

Was passiert wenn eine Studentenverbindung eine Halloween-Party schmeißt und dafür unabsichtlich einen echten Dämon heraufbeschwört? Buffy und der Rest der Scooby Gang stolpern mitten hinein und werden mit ihren größten (teilweise sehr aufschlussreichen) Ängsten konfrontiert, bevor Buffy den Dämon einfach … nun, das ist ein Spoiler, nicht wahr? Pluspunkt gibt es für Anyas „gruseliges“ Kostüm und Giles mit der Kettensäge.

3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 2, Episode 6: Halloween (1997)

Der ganz große Klassiker unter den Halloween-Episoden ist die erste (von drei) Folge aus „Buffy the Vampire Slayer“. Ein chaosanbetender Magier stiftet Unruhe in Sunnydale, als er an Halloween, dem Tag an dem das Übernatürliche eigentlich frei macht, die Menschen in das, als was sie sich verkleidet haben, verwandelt. Was weniger schlimm wäre, wenn Buffy sich nicht um Angel zu beeindrucken wie ein adeliges Mädchen aus seiner Zeit verkleidet hätte.

2. Community: Season 2, Episode 6: Epidemiology (2010)

Und alle Jahre wieder sollte man sich die zweite Halloween-Episode von „Community“ ansehen, in der eine Halloween-Party auf dem Greendale Community College zu einem Zombieseuchen-Ausbruch führt (ja wirklich), zu Abba gekämpft und gebissen wird, und das Nerdtum von Troy am Ende den Tag rettet. Eine Pflichtepisode für alle!

1.  Hocus Pocus (1993)

Wie angekündigt ist Platz 1 geschummelt, weil es sich um einen Film und keine Serienfolge handelt, aber trotzdem, wenn wir von Klassikern sprechen muss „Hocus Pocus“ erwähnt werden. Dieser Film spielt tatsächlich zu Halloween (auch wenn er im Sommer in die Kinos kam), denn nur an diesem Tag können die drei Hexenschwestern zurückkehren, die mit Witz, Musik, und ein wenig Grausamkeit ganze Generationen das Fürchten und das Lachen gelernt haben: Winnie, Sarah und Mary sind die Sanderson-Schwestern, die 300 Jahre nach ihrer Hinrichtung in die USA des späten 20. Jahhrunders zurückkehren und einen Weg suchen unsterblich zu werden. Teil 2 streamt seit letztem Jahr auf Disney+ (und wird am morgigen Donnerstag als Free-TV-Premiere am Disney Channel zu sehen sein), und Teil 3 ist geplant. Dreißig Jahre später ist aus diesem kleinen feinen Film eine echte Franchise geworden. Wer hätte das damals gedacht?

Well, there you go. It's weird how Season 4 more or less dominates the top 5, as do the specials as only one was not one. That wouldn't be odd if Mission Marvel and SBTY were not the odd ones out there, not mention both parts of Where's Perry together.

. I think I just got “better” at this given how many 30 plus sin tallies for 11 minute eps we got in Season 4. I've always done these in about the same way but whatever, I've given up trying to make sense of how these turn out. So there you go, all the sin tallies. Have fun with all this data. At some point I may post stuff reeated to this, looking at my top 20 to see how many sins my faves tend to get (for one, the 3 highest counts go to my top 3 of Season 4). Maybe someday.
