October 20th, 2023 - SDVX EG, Groove Coaster, Project DIVA, DaR, PIU PHOENIX, DDR A3
THE TRUE DAY OF RECKONING HAS ARRIVED, NOW IT'S REALLY TIME FOR MOTL5 GAMING!!! but first, isn't this card the absolute coolest??? i got it while checking into the event, slapped a crude drawing of my fursona onto it, and now i'm geared up n ready to destroy!!!
Tumblr media
so i went to waffle house for the very first time with my family to eat breakfast (very good experience btw, i already miss the chocolate waffles), then we set off to spend the whole day at the mall and GUESS WHO I FOUND FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
Tumblr media
IT'S BOMBER IN REAL!!! IN THE FLESH!!! WITH HIS ICONIC LACH TOWEL!!! AND HE KICKED MY ASS AT SDVX!!! (but he gave me haruka e-amuse pass to compensate :])
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
always wanted to meet him in person and the dream had become REAL, SUPER COOL EXPERIENCE!!!
also random tangent but while we were playing sdvx, it turned out the PIU Phoenix kit was installed overnight and was being played while we were playing?? just last night it was XX... but i guess now i'd finally get a taste of the new system for the first time!
since all the dance game cabs (except DaR) were occupied for tourneys, i decided to warm up with the alternative... the busted old unused cabs! gc is so broken whyyy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus: HAPPY FAMILY feat. moca and uli!!! (the tiny kohammy is mine)
Tumblr media
but now, after all those exhilarating meetings and fun times, it's time for the real deal, my personal action moment of the event... it was TOURNEY TIME!! STARTING WITH PIU PHOENIX!!! warmups were simple, trying out the new songs and getting used to the pads,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then, it was the real deal vs MajinnTy in a waterfall-style bracket... and after almost getting wrecked with the top-right arrow dropping continuously... i managed to beat him 2-1 and took 2nd place in the pool!!! but since it's waterfall format (i didn't realize this until later), i got thrown into the redemption pool with everyone else and wouldn't get to play until later... but in retrospect that was STILL such an impressive victory.
Tumblr media
so once the redemption pool started, i got put up against EMCAT, who had been slowly upgrading from level 2 up to here. it was a weird match, but i hypothetically managed to 2-0 in my set, getting this sick 985k on beat of the war! but once again, it wasn't enough to beat the acc gods in the pool, PacRob and Ty, and i ended up 3rd out of 6 in the bracket, which left me a little dejected to see i wouldn't have my dark horse moment in my first tourney... but in retrospect i worked against the odds and managed to do really well!!! such a nice showing personally, and i'm excited to train some more and try again some other time! (also the 2nd image is from the commentary that my friend watched when i was up which is why i mentioned the dark horse moment, forever alone...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but NOW!!! IT WAS TIME FOR THE 2ND AND LAST TOURNEY OF MINE FOR THE NIGHT, THE ONE THAT WOULD SEAL MY POTENTIAL OVERALL LEGACY, THE DDR A3 TOURNAMENT!!! unlike the previous PIU tourney, this was a round robin format where all 4 players got to play against each other once in a best-of-three set. and after a set between two others in my pool, i was up for some back-to-back sets, starting with LUBANAHHHH
having warmed up already with pump, i decided to pick long train runnin' challenge for my warmup to confuse the commentators, but then the REAL action began. our first song was lubanah's pick, New York Evolved (Type A) DSP-13 (fucked up), which i dominated solely thanks to MA! and then when it was my pick, i PFC'ed Yoidore Shirazu ESP-13 on-stream once again, taking the set 2-0!!
Tumblr media
next up was against KINDLADY/Zaphine, where we both went in without warmup and played Xepher CSP-15 (Zaphine's pick) and Mess With My Emotions ESP-12 (my pick), and i took the set 2-0 again!! except with such a close call on Mess With My Emotions...
Tumblr media
and finally in my pool, i played against MisterGuy in both Step Machine ESP-14 (my pick) and Healing Vision (Angelic Mix) ESP-13 (MisterGuy's pick), where i would just barely win Step Machine by 2 points (even got clipped on the Ohio DDR channel), and then PFC Healing Vision to claim my 2nd in-tourney PFC, taking the set once again 2-0 and advancing to level 9 with a perfect performance!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
level 9 came and i was put up against SnowStorm/SIM, thejurok, and gabbyjay, which would be where my demise would come... only before a bunch of cab crashes! no scores for most of these unfortunately, but i was bested 0-2 by SnowStorm on Revolutionary Addict ESP-13 and PARANOiA Revolution DSP-14 (my MA wasn't quite up to par on either songs, probably exhaustion from only eating before my pump tourney...)
for my set against jurok though, i won my first pick; roppongi EVOLVED Ver.D ESP-15, even despite forgetting to disable my sudden+ before the speedup!!! i forgot what his pick was, but i lost it and lost the tiebreaker too, MAX 300 DSP-12, in order to lose the set 1-2...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then lastly, the final and most ultimate set... the one against longtime Black Flag Academy admin and potential rival, GABBYJAY!!! this set was super funny because we both won each other's picks (he won Bang Pad(Werk Mix) ESP-13, i won osaka EVOLVED (TYPE1) DSP-13), and for the tiebreaker we got New Gravity CSP-14...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and after such an intense battle not shown on stream due to the sheer intensity and vulgarity (actually the stream was what was causing the cab to crash repeatedly), we finished the song and looked at each others' scores to see the results, and...
...by two points. i got a PFC up from a 988k, on-stream, not having seen the chart before, and yet i fell short by such a tight margin, losing the set once again 1-2...
Tumblr media
but overall, super satisfying performance from both ends (and super funny reaction)!!! i loved this experience even if i didn't advance twice (which is fine, level 9 was more of a victory lap anyways LOL i was just a silly little teen playing against intimidating adults). but that did indeed conclude my tournament run at the mistaketh on the laketh, so until next time! thanks all who tuned in and cheered me on in chat, the support was so nice to read back at the hotel! but there's still 2 more days of the event to enjoy, so let's enjoy 'em!

A Detroit Pizza Crawl
Last week I noticed three consecutive days without pizza tours on my schedule, so I decided to hop on a plan and jump over to Detroit, Michigan. Maybe you’ve heard of this place; it used to be THE automotive capitol of the U.S. but then hit some road bumps and is currently experiencing some major reconstructive surgery. But I didn’t go there to see the sights (although I DID hit the Motown Museum), I went there to eat the pizza. For those who grew up in the area, Detroit’s pizza is just regular old pizza. But for everyone else, pizza in Detroit is unique enough to be its own genre. I’ll get to that in a bit, but let’s start at the beginning of my short-but-tasty trip.
Tumblr media
Caprara Bakery 13498 Northline Rd Southgate, MI 48195
This place was recommended to me by Zane Hunt, one half of the Hunt brother duo that owns Via 313 in Austin, TX. They’re from this area and have some childhood favorites they hit every time they’re back in town. This was my first stop off the plane and it was a fun one. It’s a bakery, not a pizzeria. The history of pizza is rooted in bakeries and many still serve room-temperature slices to accompany your loaves and Italian groceries.
Tumblr media
This is Crystal and she’s suuuuuuper nice. She immediately knew who I was talking about when I mentioned the Hunt brothers and let me snap this pic as a “Hello!” Very sweet start to the trip!
I poked around the shelves but didn’t see any products that were terribly exciting, but it’s good to know there’s a place to get imported tomatoes and pasta if that’s what you’re into. The main event is definitely the bakery. All the breads looked decent, just like the old school bakeries in NYC and Hoboken.
Tumblr media
This is bakery pizza. It’s similar to grandma pizza and Sicilian pizza, but not nearly as sturdy. It’s sort of an afterthought, using leftover dough with other ingredients that are sold in the store. It’s baked in a pan and served at room temperature. The underside was extremely pale, but it wasn’t raw. I liked the tight CSR (cheese-to-sauce ratio) but didn’t love that the basic slice has pepperoni on it. I guess this is Michigan. Overall, this was a really fun stop but not essential to the Detroit pizza experience.
Tumblr media
Frank’s Italian American Food 3144 Biddle Ave Wyandotte, MI 48192
My next stop was another recommendation from Zane Hunt. He told me this would be the last meal on earth for him and his brother Brandon. It’s a casual Italian American restaurant (aptly named restaurant) like the ones I grew up with, but their pizza is more Midwestern. The crust is thick enough to support the ample cheese and a cooked tomato sauce. What really stuck out me here was the quality pepperoni. The staff told me this isn’t a recent switch to follow the current trend of cup-and-char pepperoni, it’s the same old stuff they’ve always used.
The pizza looks pretty standard and I was not expecting to have the same feelings toward it that the brothers Hunt foster, but I did have to hold myself back from eating a second slice. It’s funny, sometimes the pizza that isn’t technically perfect and event is exactly what you want.
Tumblr media
Frank’s is an old restaurant, run by the same family since 1952. The young server I spoke with seemed to know a lot about the history. It turned out her aunt is the current family member in charge of the place. The customers are also long-timers. I ran into a guy named Danny who was taking a couple small pies on his motorcycle all the way to Grand Rapids, about 2.5 hours away.
Tumblr media
Buddy’s Rendezvous 17125 Conant St. Detroit, MI 48212
I’m ditching the chronological reporting style for a thematic one now that we’ve taken off the edge. I always start a trip with pizzerias that are not the main attractions for the city. When I went to Phoenix, AZ a few years ago I waited until Day 2 to hit Pizzeria Bianco. Buddy’s was the first stop on my second day, but it was the most recommended pizzeria in town. This is the official birthplace of Detroit style pan pizza. The place was just a bar in 1944 but added pizza in 1946.
Using the kind of steel pans that were manufactured for the auto industry, Buddy’s started making Sicilian pizzas. Since the pans are deeper than standard Sicilian pizza pans, the dough proofs in the pan with a more angular shape. In addition, the toppings can spread all the way to the edge of the pie, leaving behind no rim to hold. Instead, the perimeter gets a deliciously charred cheese border. Sauce is usually applied above the cheese, which is why some call this style Detroit Red Top.
Tumblr media
The pizza here is great. It might have even been my favorite of the entire trip. Up until now, the only Detroit style I’d had was Pi-Squared in Hendersonville, NC, Emmy Squared in Brooklyn, the related Emily in Manhattan, and a reheated Buddy’s pizza shipped to Brooklyn for a taste test (plus a few competition pizzas I judged). This has always been thought of as the benchmark and I can honestly say the description is accurate.
I visited the original location, which isn’t in the nicest neighborhood. They even have a parking lot attendant on duty all day to make sure nobody steals your car. What service! There are at least ten additional locations but I didn’t have time to check any of them out. I have a feeling this location will be on my hit list every time I go back to Detroit. Great pizza!
Tumblr media
Cloverleaf 24443 Gratiot Ave Eastpointe, MI 48021
In New York pizza terms, this is the Totonno’s to Buddys’ Lombardi’s. Does that make any sense? Gus Guerra founded Cloverleaf in 1953, but he’s the guy who brought pizza to Buddy’s in 1946. Here’s where my analogy gets a little thin. Antonio Pero was a pizza maker at Lombardi’s but the jury’s still out on whether or not he was responsible for bringing pizza there in the first place. Guerra is almost certainly the root of the Detroit pan pizza ... well, actually his wife gets the real credit.
I heard the story from Jack Guerra, son of Gus. As he explained to me, Gus was born in San Marino, Italy (up in the north). Jack’s mother was born in the U.S., but her mother was from Sicily. Jack’s grandmother would make traditional Sicilian sfincione, a type of focaccia covered with crushed tomato, caramelized onion, and breadcrumbs. It was this recipe that became the Detroit pan pizza after Gus noticed that the thick rectangular pans used by the auto industry would work well for the dish. On top of the square shape of Detroit pan pizza, its other central characteristic is the use of Brick cheese, which forms a charred border around the pizza’s edge. Gus told me that Brick cheese was popular in the Hamtramck neighborhood of Detroit, a Polish enclave located near Buddy’s. It became a staple on Detroit pan pizzas because it was available nearby.
Tumblr media
When Gus left Buddy’s in 1953, he opened a new shop in the neighborhood now called Eastpointe. Gus’s kids run their own locations and the company has even started franchising. I only went to the original location so can’t speak for the others. But this place is great, although more stylized than the other spots.
Tumblr media
Gus’s son Jack and daughter Marie run the operation now and they were incredibly kind to spend time with me on my visit and answer questions they’ve probably gotten a thousand times before. No book or article can possibly replace the experience of hearing these stories in person.
Tumblr media
Loui’s Pizza 23141 Dequindre Rd Hazel Park, MI 48030
Speaking of stories, here’s yet another link in the chain of Detroit style pan pizza. Loui Tourtois opened the place in 1977 after making pizza at Buddy’s for years. He was taught by Gus Guerra, so absolutely part of the original lineage. His pizzeria is the most iconic and cozy feeling in town, with chianti bottles covering the walls and ceilings. Seriously, there are thousands of these things everywhere. But the decor isn’t nearly as interesting as the pizza.
Tumblr media
This was my first taste of actual Detroit pan pizza. Like Buddy’s and Cloverleaf, it’s rectangular and has a border of burnt cheese. The biggest difference is that this beast is more dense than its compatriots. It felt heavier in both the hand and the stomach. I didn’t dislike this, but after tasting the others I can easily say it wasn’t my favorite. The one way Loui’s DOES win is in ambiance. It’s an old school dark room with wood paneling and stained glass -- all the things I look for in a classic midwestern pizza joint. It had a vibe like Marie’s in Chicago, only much messier. Loui’s has empty chianti bottles hanging all over the place. It feels really special in there.
Tumblr media
Detroit Style Pizza Company 28630 Harper Ave. Saint Clair Shores, MI 48081
Shawn Randazzo is a world champion pizza maker whose pizza I have had the pleasure of judging several times over the past decade. His specialty is the Detroit style pan pizza and that makes perfect sense knowing that he ran a Cloverleaf location for over 15 years. After leaving Cloverleaf, he opened a couple pizzerias and focused on exporting this style of pizza to the rest of the world. Now he consults for pizzerias and even sells the equipment and ingredients required to make it.
Tumblr media
One of the locations has transformed into a shipping center but the spot I hit is still a living, breathing pizzeria. It’s more of a take-out spot than it is a dine-in restaurant, so our pie hit the table in a box. We didn’t let it sit before popping the top and digging in. I have to tell you this pie had the most perfectly charred cheese along the perimeter. Really special. What’s really cool here is that they apply the sauce AFTER the bake. WHOA! I didn’t see that at the other spots, but suppose it’s possible since I didn’t have my head in the kitchen like I did at DSP.
Tumblr media
Mani Osteria 341 E Liberty St Ann Arbor, MI 48104
This wasn’t a long trip, but I saved some time for a quick jump over to Ann Arbor to see some friends and OF COURSE they wanted to meet up for pizza. That’s cool, because several people had recommended this place to me. Mani is a typical classed-up pizza joint serving neo-Neapolitan pizza from a wood-burning oven. That means that the crust is more sturdy than a typical Neapolitan pizza even though it has a lot of the same visual features. The bake is a bit longer and the flour used for the dough is often stronger than the typical low protein variety.
Tumblr media
The midwest usually treats pizza like a junk food but this kind of place is more of a dining experience. They use cloth napkins and have a fancy looking wood fired oven.  The pizza has blisters the way more standard Neapolitan pizzas do. I get why so many people told me to check this place out, but can’t say the pizza was exceptional in the universe of pizza.
Tumblr media
Amico’s Pizza 28422 Joy Rd Livonia, MI 48150
This place is special. It was recommended to me by my friend / pizza tour guide Joe Garreffa. Joe worked here when he was in high school so it holds a special place in his heart. It’s a family owned business that has been around for decades, although it moved into this strip mall a few years ago. They make both round and square pies, with their square looking more like a Sicilian than it does a standard Detroit style pan pizza.
Tumblr media
I had a similar feeling about this pizza that I had about the places recommended to me by the Hunt brothers. This is a total neighborhood joint. Joe’s connection to the family and their pizza keep him coming back and I think that is absolutely beautiful. Even he flinched a bit when I showed him this picture of a pie topped with canned mushrooms, but that doesn’t take away from the feeling he gets when he stops by for a pie. Sam Sifton wrote about the pizza cognition theory in Ed Levine’s book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven and I believe Amico’s to be the perfect example. The pizza you grow up eating defines the very word itself. The owners of Amico’s might not realize the incredible power they have that came from sticking around.
Tumblr media
Supino 2457 Russell St Detroit, MI 48207
The goal of my trip to Detroit was pretty clear: to understand Detroit’s indigenous pizza style. That means I ate a ton of thick, rectangular pizza with charred cheese edges topped with cooked red sauce. I would have been perfectly happy sticking to pizzerias that fit this description, especially because I ate quite a bit of it in the 2.5 days I spent in town. But people kept offering suggestions and I found it hard to ignore all the voices imploring me to give Supino a try. So at the end of a very long day of pizza eating, which included the drive to and from Ann Arbor (plus some more pizzerias I’ll post about later), I decided to end the night with one final stop.
Tumblr media
Supino is another neo-Neapolitan pizzeria, slightly less upscale than Mani in Ann Arbor but more elevated in its pizza. The crust is thinner at the edge but lightly charred like all good high-temp pies should be. The ingredients on top were well proportioned and every slice had a nice balance of flavor and consistency. I don’t think I liked this as much as everybody who told me to check it out, but that might have something to do with the fact that I had crammed about a dozen pizzerias into a seriously short trip and this was the final major stop. Even so, I found the pizza to be a worthy alternative to the thick pan pies I got to know over the two days prior.
Detroit clearly has a serous pizza scene happening right now, but I think it’s safe to say the real action is with the old school variation introduced by Gus Guerra in the 1940s. THANK YOU GUS!

Method Man & Redman Team Up To Remix Gang Starr’s “Bad Name”
One of the Best Yet (2019), marks the seventh and final album by legendary, hip-hop duo DJ Premier and Guru. The album featuring unreleased and posthumous vocals from the Boston-bred emcee and brand new production by the iconic DJ Premier released in Nov. of last year but is continuously seeing growth on all DSPs thanks to the devotion of hip-hop purists around the world.
The album’s leadoff single “Family and Loyalty” featuring J. Cole has garnered a lot of attention from fans of the late lyricists as well as newfound of the genre. The track even received its own emotional visuals featuring both the “MIDDLE CHILD” rapper and the Jazzmatazz series curator. Now, it looks like Method Man and Redman are continuing to bridge the gap with their own remix of Gang Starr’s highly-popularized album cut entitled, “Bad Name.”
Redman kicks off the track introducing himself and longtime rap affiliate, Method Man, before Guru’s introduction verse. After an intense turntable performance by none other than DJ Premier himself, Redman dominates the Edo G/LL Cool J sampled instrumental proclaiming his longevity in the game and knowledge of the culture that has saved the lives of many. Method Man follows up the “Da Rockwilder” rapper praising the soul of the Gang Starr frontman and questioning the heart of today’s coveted rap personalities.
Check out Gang Starr’s “Bad Name (Remix) featuring Method Man and Redman in the link provided below and rest in power to one of the greatest to ever pick up a mic in Keith Edward Elam, AKA Guru.

Brainworx is proud to announce availability of bx_console N, bolstering bx_console — its accurate and highly-successful channel strip model of Brainworx Founder/CEO Dirk Ulrich’s personal Neve® VXS™ large-format analog mixing console (currently used in the Brainworx Studio in Leverkusen, Germany, having hitherto been heard on countless records as it made its way through different studios around the world) with patent-pending TMT (Tolerance Modeling Technology) that delivers 72 unique channels reproducing the analog characteristics of the original console — with new features worthy of a new name, as of October 4…
As an eagerly-awaited update to the highly-successful, TMT-based bx_console, bx_console N now arrives hot on the heels of bx_console G and bx_console E, Brainworx’s two newest console plugins. Packed with new features, bx_console N takes the concept several stages further, featuring a new THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) knob that adds saturation to the signal, simulating levels of pleasing distortion feasibly found when overdriving a real-world analog console in addition to bringing definition to sounds. Still better, the RANDOM CHANNEL function randomly assigns a TMT channel to either one instance or all instances of bx_console N in a session, so users can easily introduce analog nonlinearities from channel variation into their mix — just like when working with a real-world analog console!
But building upon the trailblazing groundwork laid by bx_console is only part of the latest and greatest Brainworx breakthrough; by retaining the same superb feature set as the original plugin, plus points in its favour form an even lengthier list, starting with accurately capturing that iconic sound of Brainworx Founder/CEO Dirk Ulrich’s personal Neve® VXS™ large-format analog mixing console. Creatively, Brainworx’s patent-pending TMT takes into account the real-world variation between hardware components in a channel strip. Such variations, when combined across a mixing console, are a key component behind the warmth, depth, and width associated with analog gear. Get this, though: TMT measures a ‘golden unit’ channel from the hardware — in this case, a rare 72-channel Neve® VXS™ analog console, using the component values within and their specified tolerances to create an algorithm that simulates the same variation found in a brand-new console rolling off the factory floor.
Furthermore, in bx_console N, that TMT gives rise to 72 unique channels reproducing the analog characteristics of the original console. Combined with an extremely low CPU (Central Processing Unit) load, this effectively enables users to create a virtual 72-channel console in their DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). Wisely, the TMT section also allows selection between ANALOG and DIGITAL modes on stereo instances — ANALOG mode uses two, stepped channels on L/R, lending a pleasingly imperfect stereo image that is wider and warmer, while DIGITAL clones the channel on L/R, lending a ‘digitally perfect’ stereo image (though TMT channel characteristics still individually apply).
Additional features of note in the plugin include: punchy L/C (limiter/compressor) with adjustable REL2 (second release) time to prevent pumping, sidechain HPF (high pass filter), and MIX knob; GATE/EXP (expander) with external sidechaining; forgiving EQ filters that can be placed before, after, or within the dynamics sidechain; mid/side monitoring; and a virtual noise floor that simulates inherent noise in original hardware (that, of course, can be switched off).
Who better to champion bx_console N, then, than Brainworx Founder/CEO Dirk Ulrich himself? “When we modeled the console, we found out that there are about 150 components in the schematics for where the parts have tolerances, and we were able to capture these tolerances in a realistic way, so you get 72 different channels in the plugin,” he begins, before concluding thus: “There are some channel strip emulations out there already, but they never captured the most important thing, which is when you mix on a real console, every channel sounds a little bit different. That’s very important when you mix stereo channels, because the left and right play-out of the two channels is never exactly the same, giving you some phasing issues — in a positive way. This, I believe, is what people mean when they say, ‘An analog mix sounds bigger and wider.’ This is exactly what we’ve captured in this plugin.”
bx_console N is available for purchase — as an AAX Native & DSP-, AU-, VST2-, and VST3-supporting plugin for Mac OS X (10.8 through 10.12), Windows (7 through 10), and Pro Tools 10.3.10 (or higher) — exclusively from Plugin Alliance for an introductory promo price of $179.00 USD through to October 31, 2017, rising to $299.00 USD thereafter. (Owners of the original bx_console can upgrade to bx_console N for $29.00 USD while owners of bx_console who purchased bx_console E or bx_console G in August or September 2017 can upgrade to bx_console N for free.)

Sound BlasterX G6 External Sound Card Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When putting together a new system, we all want the best possible computer we can afford. However, there are always corners that can be cut to save a few bucks, especially when you’re on a tight budget. Usually, the corners cut are non-core components. With the increased quality in on-board audio on motherboards, most people don’t take much consideration into buying a sound card. I was very much one of these people, until last year, when we reviewed both the Sound Blaster AE-5 and the G5 external sound card. After testing both of those sound cards, I had a much different opinion of both add-in and external sound cards. So, when Sound Blaster asked us to check out their new G6 external sound card, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. The Sound Blaster G6 is the predecessor to the very popular G5 we reviewed last year. The G5 ended up being my favorite thing I reviewed in 2018, even more so than the AE-5 add-in sound card. The Sound BlasterX G6 is an attempt to improve on an already great product. The G6 even won an Innovation Award at CES 2019. The Sound BlasterX G6 is a 32bit 384kHz capable DAC that delivers a DNR of up to 130dB. But will it make that much of a difference over the 24-bit/192kHz, 120dB USB DAC of the G5? We put the G5 and G6 through the same real world testing. So, was there actually a difference? Specifications Weight 144 g Interface/Power USB 2.0, USB Bus Powered DAC Dynamic Range: 130dB (A-weighted), THD+N: ~0.0002%, Sampling Rate (DSP Playback): PCM 16/24/32-bit / 44.1, 48.0, 88.2, 96.0kHz, Sampling Rate (Direct Mode Playback): PCM 16/24/32-bit / 44.1, 48.0, 88.2, 96.0, 176.4, 192.0, 352.8, 384.0 kHz, DoP 24-bit / 176.4 , 352.4 kHz ADC Dynamic Range: 114dB (A-weighted), THD+N: 0.0006%, Sampling Rate (Mic-in): 16/24/32-bit / 44.1, 48.0, 88.2, 96.0, 176.4, 192.0 kHz, Sampling Rate (Line-in, Optical-In): 16/24/32-bit / 44.1, 48.0, 88.2, 96.0, 176.4, 192.0 kHz, Output Impedance: 1 Ω, Supported Headphone Impedance: 16 - 600 Ω, High Gain: 150 - 600 Ω (+14dB), Low Gain: 16 - 149 Ω (+0dB) Audio Technology SB-Axx1™ Connectivity Options (Main) 1 x ⅛″ Line In/mini TOSLINK In Combo Jack, 1 x ⅛″ Line Out/mini TOSLINK Out Combo Jack, 1 x ⅛″ Headphone/Headset Jack, 1 x ⅛″ Ext. There are also pictures of every device the G6 is compatible with. The back of the box also lists several of the main features of the Sound Blaster G6, as well as minimum system requirements.   The Sound Blaster G6 comes set in a felt covered, plastic tray, much like the G5 was packed. The Sound Blaster G6. The Sound Blaster G6 comes packed with a user manual, warranty information and a declaration of conformity on radio equipment. There is also a thank you note from Creative Labs which is a nice touch. The last two things in the box are a micro usb cable for power and date, as well as a hybrid optical and 3.5 mm cable. One end plugs into the SPDIF port on you motherboard or TV, for example., The other side plugs into the back of the sound card. A Closer Look at the Sound BlasterX G6
Tumblr media
The Sound BlasterX G6 is an external sound card and the predecessor to the very popular and successful G5. The Sound Blaster G6 is very compact. In fact, it’s almost the same exact size as its older brother, the G5. The G6 measures 111 x70 x 24 mm and weights only 144 grams. The G6 uses the same SB-Axx1 as the G5. However, there are a few major differences. The signal to noise ratio has increased 10dB on the G6 up to 130 dB. The audio fidelity has also increased from 24-bit/192 Hz on the G5 to 32-bit/384 Hz on the G6. The Sound BlasterX G6 brings together a virtual 7.1 32-bit/384 Hz, 130 dB HD Gaming DAC with an External USB Sound Card featuring Sound Blasters amazing Xamp Headphone technology. Sound Blasters Xamp technology is one of its best features. With Xamp, the Sound Blaster G6 amplifies each audio channel on your headphones individually. So both your left and right ear cup get the benefit of a 600Ω amplifier. Like the G5, the G6 features virtual 7.1 surround sound, game-voice volume balancing and Scout Mode. Also, the Sound Blaster G6 features Dolby Digital decoding which the G5 did not. The Sound BlasterX G6 also supports hi-res PCM and DoP audio formats. Aesthetically, the Sound BlasterX G6 is nearly identical to the G5 we did a review on last year. However, there are a few key differences between the two sound cards. The first and most glaring difference is the color. Where the Sound BlasterX G5 is black, the G6 is more of a gray color. Behind the volume control knob, the light is blueish white on the G6 where on the G5, it was red. Sound Blaster has added RGB lighting to the G6 in the form of the Sound BlasterX logo located in the center of the top of the G6. The RGB lighting can be customized through the Sound Blaster Connect software. The only other main difference aesthetically between the G5 and the G6 is the lack of the USB pass through on the rear of the Sound Blaster G6. In just about every review we do, if we can take something apart, we do. So like the G5, we did a complete tear down of the G6. This will let us see what components the use inside the external sound cards. To do this, you must peel back the four corners of the rubber pad on the bottom. Peeling off the entire rubber padding isn't recommended, as it may not go back on. Side note, the bit needed is a triangle bit found in the I Fix It tool kit. The Sound BlasterX G6 uses the SB-Axx1 audio processor from Creative. The SB-Axx1 is a highly advanced audio processor that greatly improves the audio experience of your computer, tablet, smartphone or whatever it's hooked up to. Its the same audio processor used is the G5, as well as Creatives line up of Axx Bluetooth wireless speakers, such as the SBX 20 and SBX 10.   On the right side of the Sound Blaster G6 are two buttons and a switch. To the left, we have the Scout Mode button first. Scout mode lets you hear your enemies’ footsteps in game. It can also be paired with the Scout Radar app on both Android and IOS. The next button is the SBX button. This allows you to scroll between three preset profiles on the G6. To the far right, there is a gain control switch that goes between low and high gain. The low setting goes between 32Ω-150Ω and the high setting goes between 150Ω-600Ω. There is a very noticeable difference between high and low gain. Further down the right side are three lights, a mic and headphone icon and the Dolby Audio logo. These three lights represent the SBX profiles. These profiles can be changed in the Sound Blaster Connect software. The logo on the top of the Sound Blaster X G6 is RGB back lit and as mentioned earlier, can be customized in the Sound Blaster Connect software. Its a nice added touch from the red static light on the G5 and the RGB lighting is far from over done on the G6. On the front, there is are two 3.5 mm ports. One for headphones and the other for a mic. There is a volume knob that also doubles as a mute button. The Lighting behind the knob is static and can not be changed in the software. The rear of the G6 has a micro USB port for power and data. There are also two 3.5 mm ports. One is the Line/Optical In, the other is the Line/Optical Out. You do no need to use these ports. The Sound Blaster G6 only required the Micro USB port to be used.
Tumblr media
Sound Blaster Connect Software When I buy hardware or peripherals, I tend to look for plug and play products. It seems most things these days come with not just drivers, but also software. The Sound BlasterX G6 can be used as plug and play. However, it is also supported by one of the better pieces of software I’ve used recently. The Sound Blaster Connect software allows you completely customize your audio experience, in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
When you first open the Sound Blaster Connect software, you’ll start on your Dashboard. Here, you can turn on and off the different feature of the Sound Blaster G6. These features include the BlasterX Acoustic Engine, Scout Mode, Dolby Digital Surround Sound, Filters, Voice Morph and the lighting. There also 18 preset profiles for listening experiences such as gaming, movies and music. There are also several presets for different games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite and many more. A full list of preset profiles is listed below; Adventure and Action Call of Duty Series Counter-Strike Global Offensive Default Dota 2 Driving Simulation Effects Off First Person Shooter League of Legends Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain Movie Music Project Cars Real Time Strategy Rocket League Stadium The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt The next section under the Dashboard is the Sound section. You can also customize your listening experience using the Sound Blaster Acoustic Engine. There are 5 customization options in the Acoustic Engine. The first is the surround option. This allows you to set how wide you surround sound is. The range is from normal to ultra wide. Next is the Crystalizer which has a range from zero to 100. Next option is the Bass, also with a range of zero to 100. Both the Crystalizer and Bass have toggle switches as well. Nest is the Smart Volume option and last is the Dialog + option. Smart volume intelligently minimizes abrupt volume changes by adjusting the loudness of your audio play back automatically. The Dialog Plus option enhances voice is both music and movies for a clearer vocal range.
Tumblr media
Next is the Equalizer where you can customize your listening experience on each of the profiles on the dashboard. There are sliders on the bottom of the equalizer for both bass and treble. The equalizer allows you to adjust a range of different frequencies. Simply use the mouse to either click on different spots through the range of frequencies, or draw a line for the sound to hit different frequencies. As you listen, you can simply click on any given spot and slide up or down to adjust that frequency.
Tumblr media
Scout mode is the next section in the Sound Blaster Connect software. It is also one of my favorite features of any Sound Blaster sound card I've used over the last couple years. Say you're playing any first-person shooter. With Scout Mode enabled, you're able to hear the foot steps of your enemies, from the direction they are coming from. The closer they get the louder they get. There is also a companion app for IOS and Android call the Scout Radar. This will show your enemies as a blip on the radar right on your phone or tablet. Now if they could make that for in-laws.
Tumblr media
The next menu under the sound option is the Dolby section. The Sound BlasterX G6, unlike the G5, has Dolby Digital Surround Sound. In this section, you can set the surround sound to Full, Normal, or Night modes. Its also a slider, so you can make small adjustments in between each setting.
Tumblr media
There are several filters that can be applied to the Sound BlasterX G6, four to be exact. The first is Fast Roll Off - Minimum Phase. The second is Slow Roll Off - Minimum Phase. The last two are Fast Roll Off - Linear Phase and Slow Roll Off - Linear Phase.
Tumblr media
The Sound BlasterX G6 added RGB Lighting, something the G5 didn't have. Just the X on the top of the sound card has RGB lighting, Its subtle, but looks good. The Lighting menu allows you to set different profiles to the lighting, There are Solo, which is simply a static color. The other three are Pulsate, Music Reactive and Cycle. This does not change the lighting behind the knob. The last section on the main menu is the Setup section. Here you can configure the output mode to either direct or to have some kind of effect, You can set your head phones to stereo mode, 5.1 or 7.1 virtual surround sound. In the Setup, you can also adjust the levels of the different input and outputs of the Sound BlasterX G6. The Sound Blaster Connect software also allows you to set up different kinds of speakers that you may connect through the Sound Blaster G6. You can set the different levels for the mic volume and mic monitoring volume. There is also a voice morph feature that is fun to mess around with. Overall, there are a ton of customization options in the Sound Blaster Connect Software. Benchmarking and Subjective Testing To test the Sound BlasterX G6, we ran the Right Mark Audio Analyzer. This is the program we use to test the on-board audio in our motherboard review. We compared The G6 to not only the G5 but also to the onboard audio on the Z390 Aorus Pro. RightMark will give you an idea of how the audio compares on paper. To test with Rightmark, you must first plug into both the rear headphone jack and the rear mic jack using a double-ended 3.5 mm jack cable. This creates an audio loop to test the internal audio performance of the onboard audio.
Tumblr media
The Sound BlasterX G6 is compatible with your PC, PS4. XBOX ONE and Nintendo Switch. However, there are other, more unique ways the G6 can be used. Personally, my favorite way to use the Sound BlasterX G6 is an amplifier for my cell phone. It just requires a USB pot and two 3.5 mm auxiliary cables. Or one aux cable and a pair of head phones. You can power the G6 using the USB port in my Jeep. Then, run one aux cable to the aux port in the car and the other to the cell phone. This gave me countless hours of use with the G6. A couple hours a day for weeks. I listened to podcasts, books and music of all kinds. You can also run the G6 off of a power bank. There aren’t too many situations I could see this being necessary, but it is possible. Maybe being on the beach all day? For the most part, audio reviews are very subjective. We can run all the audio benchmarks we want, but what sounds good to me, may not sound good to you. For all of my audio reviews, I have a set sampling of music and movies I used while testing headphones, earbuds, sound cards and the like. The games I play do vary since as new games come out, there are better games for testing audio. Generally, its first or third person shooters I use to test audio though.  I always listen to the Eagles Hotel California. Reason for picking this song is it’s the song I listened to on Sennheiser’s $55,000 Orpheus headphones at CES a few years ago. However, I do listen to a wide array of music, and my testing reflects that. I always test any audio hardware with rap songs with excessive amounts of bass, This is to see if there will be any distortion on either the headphones or sepakers I'm using at the time of the review. Most recently, I've also added a 7.1 surround sound test as well. The test includes several different clips and does a great job testing surround sound system. You can test it out here: https://youtu.be/Jb4GolexHac For the last several years now, I’ve used the Fnatic Duel gaming headset on my PC. It’s an amazing headset and completely modular. Its private label for Fnatic and made by AIAIAI and part of their TMA-2s ecosystem. It is hands down, the best gaming headset I’ve ever used. However, with it modular, I have it set u p as a pair of headphones, with no in-line or boom mic attached. I’d dare to say they may be one of the best pairs of headphones I’ve ever owned. I even chose the Duel over my Sennheiser headphones for several reasons. The fact the Duel can be customized is a great feature, they are very comfortable and if you can believe it, sound better than the Sennheisers I was using, the HD 598 special edition. When testing the Rightmark Audio analyzer to test the quality of the sound put out by the Sound Blaster G6. There are 8-bit, 16-bit and 24-bit tests with in Rightmark. Generally, we run the 16 and 24-bit tests in a motherboard review For the G5, we did the same. However, for the G6, we included a 32-bit test as well.   For both the G6 and G5, we did both 16 and 24-bit testing on all frequencies. These frequencies are 44.1 Hz, 48 Hz, 88 Hz, 96 Hz, 176 Hz, 192 Hz, 352 Hz and 384 Hz. We also added results from the Z390 Pro review, just to compare the external sound cards to on-board audio. It was no surprise the both the G5 and G6 did better than the on-board audio. What was a surprise to me was how much better the G6 was than the G5 in our Rightmark testing, especially on the 24-bit testing. On the first 16-bit test, the G5 was slightly above the G6. So, I had expected this to continue throughout testing. However, after that, the G6 began to inch its way further and further ahead of the G5. On the 24-bit testing, the G6 steadily beat out the G5 on all frequencies. Where I was really surprised by the Sound BlasterX G6 was in the subjective testing. I honestly didn't expect the slight increase in specifications from the G5 would make that much of a difference. I did all my basic testing I do on all audio products, with a couple of additions. I watched the same movies with both the G5 and G6, I listened to the same songs, even played some of the same games. But since the review of the G5 was published, the G5 had lived in my car and was used as an in-line amp for my cell phone, the Lg Q7+. It's not the best phone, but it has decent sound quality and a built-in amplifier. Since this is where most of my experience with the G5 was, I used the Sound BlasterX G6 in the same way, in my car. The G6 has essentially been with me at all times since receiving it a couple of months ago. I always watch the same movie when testing audio. That movie is Black Hawk Down. It’s great for testing both 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. It also won the Oscar for best sound mixing in 2002. As for games, or games, I play a mix of several different games. This time around was Assassins Creed Odyssey, Far Cry 5, GTA V and Battlefield V. The Sound Blaster G6 works great for gaming. Especially with Scout Mode enabled in a competitive shooter like Battlefield V or a stealth game like Assassins Creed Odyssey. The benefit of hearing footsteps from the direction they're coming in is a great advantage to have. The last place I tested the Sound BlasterX G6 is in my car, as an in-line amp for my cell phone, connected through the auxiliary port.I listened to everything from movies and TV shows to music and podcasts. I used the Sound Blaster G6 in my car to and from work everyday, 4 or 5 days a week. My car had Infinity speakers, so they already sound good. The G5 made them sound even better. However, the G6 makes my car sound like it has sub woofers in the trunk. Sub woofers with zero distortion. I do know the G6 is compatible with the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. However, I own none of these, so I couldn't test it personally. Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Tumblr media
I couldn't be happier with the overall performance of the Sound BlasterX G6. The sound it produces is clean, clear and crisp, with no distortion. I honestly did not expect it to be as good as it was. I just didn't see too much room for improvement with in this price range. However, Creative Labs proved me wrong. They showed me again that there are plenty of benefits to a sound card over on-board audio. Especially when talking about an external card such as the G6. First off, the portability is great. The Sound Blaster G6 is compact and fits in your pocket. The G6 is extremely versatile and can be used for much more than just your PC. Since it has the plug and play feature, the G6 can be used anywhere. You can plug it into the wall using a USB adapter and just use it for your phone or tablet. If you watch a lot of movies or TV on your phone as I do, the addition of Dolby Surround Sound is a great feature to utilize on the Sound Blaster G6. The simulated 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound works great and can give you a cinema-like listening experience on your cell phone.
Tumblr media
Music sounds amazing through the Sound BlasterX G6. The highs a crystal clear, crisp and clean. The lows are deep with no distortion. No matter what kind of music you prefer, the G6 is perfect to make you music sound even better. The G6 has replaced the G5 and found a semi-permanent home in my car as an in-line amp for my phone. Its hard for me to explain in words how much the Sound Blaster G6 has improved the sound quality in my car. Its really night and day and something you have to hear to understand. But even with all that, the Sound Blaster G6 is really made with gaming in mind. The Scout Mode feature is proof enough of that fact. Scout mode is great, especially for online, competitive shooters such as Battlefield V or the newest fad, Apex Legends. With Scout Mode enables, you can hear your enemies footsteps from the direction they car coming from. This gives you a competitive advantage in many games. The companion app even allows you to see your enemies as a blip on a radar, right on your cell phone. This is a really cool feature and it works rather well. Even better than I had expected. Just download the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Overall, I was very impressed with the improvements the Sound BlasterX G6 made of the G5. The fact I can throw it in my pocket and bring it anywhere is a huge plus. I love the AE-5, but I love the fact the G6 can be swapped from my PC to my laptop to my car or even to my phone. So, the portability of the G6 is a huge plus for me. So even if you own the Sound Blaster AE-5 or another PCIe sound card, the Sound Blaster G6 is still a great product to pick up. Now, what if you already own the G5? Should you run out and buy the G6? Maybe not. The addition of the Dolby Surround sound and the slightly increased specs are not enough of a reason to dump the G5. The Sound Blaster G5 is still a great sound card. Unless you have to have that RGB lighting. However, if you're in the market for a new sound card, external or internal, I highly recommend the Sound BlasterX G6 from Creative Labs. In fact, I couldn't recommend it more. At the time of this review, you can get the Sound Blaster G6 on Amazon for $146.24, slightly cheaper than the $149.99 MSRP and a bit higher that the $99.99 the G5 will run you. I do the added features such as Dolby Surround Sound is well worth the extra money. That's if you don't already own the G5. I would have liked to see the USB pass-through included on the G6, but that's just nit picking. The Sound BlasterX G6 is just an amazing sound card. There's not much more I can say than that.   Read the full article
