I wasn't super-impressed by Gundam SEED. I basically just watched it to learn where that Destiny Gundam my wife got me came from. But when I saw this Live Concert version of the Zaku Warrior I just had to have it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't actually go to the Gundam Base in Japan to get this... I just bought it off P-Bandai last year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just a recolor of the Zaku Warrior - so those are the instructions that are in the box. There's also a single sheet detailing the changes with an updated color and marking guide.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course I had to paint the Lacus/Meer pilot figure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original Zaku Warrior instructions have a painting guide for Lunamaria Hawke - but this seated pilot is clearly not her. So I had to actually look up the scene from the anime to get the colors right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course the seated pilot is just getting entombed within the kit, never to be seen again... So I'm not sure why I feel the need to even paint him at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a really hard time deciding how to panel-line this kit...
None of my panel-line markers looked right on the pink. I tried mixing up some magenta panel-liner of my own, but I wasn't happy with how that looked either. Ultimately I just went with the brown pour-type Gundam Marker and I think it looks pretty decent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I painted the monoeye with a metallic blue DSPIAE marker.
Tumblr media
The kit comes with a small sheet of waterslide decals and some foil stickers. The shield spikes are supposed to be yellow, and there's supposed to be a yellow starburst pattern behind them... But that's all done with foil stickers. And I didn't want to do that.
Tumblr media
I picked up some SIMP waterslide decals. In addition to the same decals included with the kit there were some yellow starburst decals for the shield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was still nothing for the shield spikes though, so I had to prime and paint them. And since I didn't have any white primer they didn't turn out quite the color I wanted.
Tumblr media
I used a lot of Mr. Mark Softer on this kit.
The right shoulder is curved just enough that the decal had a hard time laying flat and needed several applications of Mr. Mark Softer.
And the shield has a lot of surface details that the decals struggled with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The posing options are a little limited for this kit... It's basically just acting as a prop in a stage show. While I could certainly do some sort of dramatic battle pose - it wouldn't really make sense.
Still - the kit looks fantastic for what it is.
I'm thrilled to have this thing up on my shelf. It was a fun build that looks truly unique.

As a bit of a detour before getting to Barbatos I have another p-bandai exclusive kit, the HGUC GM Spartan! I finished this back in June using Dspiae's paint markers for the little metallic details all over the kit and Tamiya's Acrylic X-7 Red for the leg verniers, waist plate and grenades on the side-skirt & X-11 Chrome Silver behind the visor to make it pop. After that it's just a few decals from Delpi, panel lining it and some spray can top coat to finish it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick and simple, a nice break before moving on to the mountain of work that would be hand painting a master grade. High grade's are my grade of preference at the moment because of that, easy builds that give you (with lack of perfect color separation) the opportunity to reinterpret details and customize them in your own way over a weekend or two. Next time for sure I'll have the Master Grade Barbatos done along with a few extras to go with it. I hope you enjoy! ✌🏼

sanding nubs with expensive sanding sticks: grating, exhausting, dehumanizing. withers away at your soul filing nubs with a $6 dspiae glass file: liberating, empowering, does it all for you. maybe ends up a little less clean unless you follow up with a bit of sanding but you can use the time you saved to apply waterslide decals. win/win

Product Review: Meng DSPIAE Precison Pointed Tweezers
Ok so a pair of tweezers is a pair of tweezers right? Well not always, as modellers we often find the need to use them during our projects such as for manoeuvring small parts like PE about or placing/removing paint masks and often we accumulate several pairs often each with a different purpose in mind, for example I prefer reverse grip for PE work and soldering or small flat tips for decal work for example.
So it was a couple of weeks ago now but I recently added a new set to my armoury. It was during a visit to a new bricks and mortar model shop called Rif-Raf Models in Dundee, which is where I live. In fact this new shop has been set up by a member of the club I am also member of (IPMS Dundee) and if that's not good enough well it's about 500 mtrs from my home!
So I had popped in as I was on the hunt for some RAF Hemp coloured paint for a build I have coming up soon and I spied these sitting in one of the cabinets. Well I looked at the little red box and thought, I don't really have any really pointed tweezers so they got bought too.
Now I know the packaging isn't what's important but it I do have to give a shout out to the quality of the packing materials, the outer card is of good thickness and quality, is well printed and the foam insert inside is suitably dense and holds the super shiny tweezers very snug.
Now as you can see the packaging warns that these tweezers are very sharp, how sharp you ask, well certainly sharp enough to draw blood if your not paying attention as I have already found out in the few small bench sessions I have had since their purchase.
There's a small silicone tip cover which is to help protect the tweezers from accidental damage when not in use I assume, but I would probably recommend keeping the box and storing them in it after all these are not a cheap set of tweezers and it would be a crying shame to damage the tips in storage. The tip protector does do a great job of preventing you from stabbing yourself on the extremely pointy end of these tweezers.
The tips themselves are super sharp, precision ground and line up perfectly with one another, of course this is to be expected however it never ceases to amaze me how poorly this can be done on cheaper sets of tweezers.
You don't need a great deal of force to operate the tweezers either, the action is satisfyingly soft in the hand yet I have always felt confident in the grip strength on the actual parts your holding themselves. The tips are also nicely tapered so you shouldn't have any difficulty using them in confined spaces like model aircraft cockpits for example.
My only criticism of these tweezers would probably be the almost mirror finish to the steel, whilst this is definitely aesthetically pleasing and not posing an issue if you're wearing Latex or Nitrile gloves whilst you build as I normally do, I did find it quite slippery in my fingers without gloves, especially if I had recently taken my gloves off and my hands were a bit sweaty.
In conclusion I think the Meng DSPIAE Precision Pointed Tweezers are a high quality piece of kit that I am very happy to have added to my bench. Whilst some may think they're a bit on the pricey side, they are still probably cheaper than Tweezerman sets for example which are probably more at home plucking eyebrows than poking about model kits, so you really shouldn't be put off by the price, especially as if you look after those tips I can see them continuing to serve for years to come.

[8-9-2021] Not an MG but I've been sitting on this RG Unicorn Gundam since its initial release (2017). I have other RG Unicorns but never touched them. Figured now's as good a time as any to build one to pair with my RG Sinanju. I also recently got the DSPIAE ST-A 3.0 Nippers in the mail a little bit ago. I've been mainly using either the USA Gundam Store 2.0 Nippers or the GodHand SPN-120 Nippers so this would be an opportune time to test the DSPIAE's~ #RealGrade #RG #RX0 #UnicornGundam #BanagherLinks #MobileSuitGundam #UniversalCentury #DSPIAE #Gunpla #Plamo #ModelKits #GunplaBuilder #GunplaCollector #ItsAnAddiction #ThisIsWhyImBroke https://www.instagram.com/p/CSYh1QErBx0/?utm_medium=tumblr

[Let's build a gunpla !]

Bootleg gunpla!
I saw this kit making the rounds on BlueSky and I had to check it out...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ordered this thing off AliExpress for about $10 with free shipping, and this is how it arrived. No box - just wrapped in air cushioning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this is obviously an imitation Freedom Gundam from Gundam SEED.
The instruction booklet wasn't great. I guess I assume they basically copied Bandai's instructions as well as the kit... But the print quality was pretty bad. It looked like a bad photocopy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole kit was molded from a weird, soft, almost-slippery ABS - which meant I couldn't use my favorite panel-liners. And the mold-quality wasn't great. There was some flash here and there... Some sinks... The fit was a little off all over the place - sometimes tight, sometimes loose. And the plastic just felt weird. The whole kit felt very similar to the polycap runner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, in the chest, you can see that the color separation isn't great. It's all the same bits and pieces you'd have in the Bandai kit, but they're actually molded in fewer colors. So we get several bits in the same shade of pink and there's no contrast between parts.
Tumblr media
Speaking of color separation... The kit comes with a sheet of foil stickers, but they're printed in the original colors. There's a bunch of blue and red striping to add to this pink kit. So I didn't use any of these stickers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't want to use the foil stickers so I painted the eyes and cameras with my DSPIAE markers. I think it turned out pretty well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flow-type Gundam Marker panel-liners I typically use aren't safe for ABS, so I had to try something different. I had a couple brush-tip panel-liners that I haven't really used before... They didn't work great on this plastic. I panel-lined some of the more-obvious bits... But just kind of gave up by the time I got to the wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This kit included what is basically one of Bandai's runnerless stands - except it came on a runner. And it's absolutely fantastic that they included a stand, because this kit will absolutely not stand up on its own. Everything is too weird and loose.
Tumblr media
This kit also came with a nice-looking sheet of waterslide decals. They looked so nice, in fact, that it felt like a waste to use them on this kit. So I didn't.
Tumblr media
So, I don't want to be too harsh here... It's a bootleg kit and I knew that when I bought it. I was absolutely not expecting Bandai quality. But I was still pretty surprised at how bad this kit was.
Not really even any of the specific components... But just the quality of the plastic itself was so bad. It really makes me realize how nice Bandai's kits are.
Tumblr media
Despite all my complaints - it still looks pretty good up on the shelf.
It was a quick, easy build. And given its price I certainly don't regret the time or effort I put into it. But I really just kind of want to build a real Bandai Freedom Gundam now.
