Duvet Day

It's one of the joys of parenthood, when a child is poorly.

Obviously I would never wish you sickness. Rude health is my preferred default for you, even with all the noise and stomping and mess that that means. But you are human and that means that once in a while, no matter how many vitamins I force-feed you, some microbe or another is going to have its way with your immune system.

There's nothing joyful about snotty noses of course, or the constant request for help wiping them from a kid who is definitely old enough to do it herself. Similarly the coughing and spluttering that is far too regularly felt on my face rather than on said child's own hand like civilised people do. The grizzling, the grumbling, the too-easy-tears and the demands for "just one more episode" of whatever godawful show you're obsessed with, the one with the terrible accents that makes me want to claw my own ears off. None of that is joyful.

No, the joy comes from the excuse to haul a duvet onto the sofa and spend all day underneath it, housework and chores and work ignored and forgotten. The joy of eating whatever we both fancy, nutritional content be damned, with absolutely not one shred of guilt.

And best of all, the real joy, is the feeling of you snuggling into me for comfort, needing that closeness, ideas of being "too old for cuddles" or it being "so embarrassing, Mum" completely discarded. Instead that loving contact is suddely required; necessary; wanted.

And so I snuggle on the sofa, giving you what you need, for as long as you need it. This is what I was made for. I have cuddles for days, little one, and they're all yours.
