"Ground Revision" 🎨@peter_hoffmeister • • • Site-specific installation @dyckmanfarmhouse Cracks from the pavement that covers a local school parking lot that back in 1903 was discovered to be a Slave Burial Ground, since disrespectfully disturbed and abandoned. Now it's covered in asphalt, as Hoffmeinster interprets the very grounds texture of a composition notebooks and milk cartons that plays on the inosence of school and it's complicit role in historical story telling. 💭cur. @gabrield3 https://www.instagram.com/p/B7bvGRLl6OO/?igshid=1gffn7tawtjp6

A map of upper Manhattan, showing notable land grants of old, drawn in 1879. The diagonal line to the left is the Harlem Line, which stretched from around 74th Street on the east side to 130th Street on the west side. This was established by Governor Richard Nicholls in 1666 as the dividing line between New-York and Harlem (which the British tried in vain to rename to Lancaster). Montayne’s point recalls Dr. Jean de la Montagne, who settled here in 1637 and served as the first physician in the Dutch colony. The watercourse that flowed through his property was known as Montayne’s Rivulet; part of it still flows from a spring in #CentralPark. Before the Dutch settled in Harlem, Montayne’s point was the site of a Lenape village called Rechwanis, the “point between creeks” (it was abandoned by 1669). The land just to the north was known to the Dutch as Otter-spoor, “otter’s tracks,” which indicates that this area was a good place to hunt and trade furs. The original lots of Harlem Village can be seen north of Great Barent (Randall’s) Island, stretching from the Harlem River at 125th Street to about 117th Street and Lexington Avenue (the route of the old Church lane can still be seen today, reflected in irregular building lots). Near the head of these lots is Mount Morris, dubbed Slang Bergh, “snake hill,” which was the site of a series of skirmishes during the #AmericanRevolution. Just to the north of here was a low-lying farm known as Zegendaal, “peaceful valley.” The high ground was sparsely populated through the 18th Century, with only a few large manor houses, such as the #MorrisJumelMansion, built in 1765 and commanding a view of the valley below. The largest landowner in northern Manhattan was Jan Dyckman, who settled in the area in 1666. His descendants lived in #Inwood for many years, giving the #DyckmanFarmhouse (built c. 1785) to the city in 1915 to be restored and serve as a #museum. The Lenape had a village at the tip of Manhattan called Shorakapok, “the sitting place." This was supposedly the site of the infamous purchase of #Manhattan by Peter Minuit in 1626 #NYC #Harlem #UpperManhattan #map #realestate #history #NYChistory #DiscoveringNYC via ✨ @padgram ✨(http://dl.padgram.com) https://www.instagram.com/p/BY-bl4hA85t/

Thank you so fucking much to everyone that came out to the closing of my exhibit at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum last night. It was great catching up with friends, and meeting some new fans of my work. Shout out to my new biggest fan, the one woman who doesn't even have a cell phone, let alone a computer, so would not see this post. Had a lovely conversation with her about photography, and the emotions behind em, and might be collaborating with her soon on some cool shit. #instagramuptown #dyckmanfarmhouse #inwood #washingtonheights #washheights #uptown #newyork #nyc #newyorkcity #gallery #exhibit #art #photography http://ift.tt/2nPhgLK
