The talent shortage is a problem that entrepreneurs and managers often bring to the public's attention. More and more of them have turned to importing foreign workers to cover their talent shortage.

The list of industries where employers are facing a shortage of staff seems to grow by the day. In the conditions in which there are no interested people, Romanians preferring to go to Western countries for higher earnings, the solution came from outside the borders, especially from Asian countries.

In June of this year, 84,936 foreign employees were officially employed in Romania, coming from 178 countries, which is almost double compared to the number in 2019.

According to the data centralized by the Labor Inspectorate, which refers only to the situation in the private sector, it appears that more than 80% of the foreigners who work in Romania come from 20 states, most of them coming from outside the European Union, in especially from Asia.

Turkey

On the first place in the list of foreigners who are employed in Romania are those from Turkey, with a total of 10,184 in the middle of this year, i.e., more than double compared to the same period of 2019. Almost half of them work in construction, 22 .2% in commerce and 14.5% in industry.

Nepal

In the last four years, the number of Nepalese who obtained work visas in Romania has increased six times. 22.6% of them are employed in the hospitality industry, 20.7% in the manufacturing industry and almost 10% in construction.

The Republic of Moldova

Also in the last four years, the number of Moldovans increased almost 2.5 times. Most of them work in construction (30.9%), transport (15.7%) and hospitality (13.5%).

Top industries hiring foreign workers:

Construction: more than 7000 foreign employees were working in the construction of residential and non-residential buildings by the end of 2021.

Restaurants: in the restaurants and coffee shops sectors there were more than 3000 employees from different countries.

Transport: in this sector, almost 2000 foreign workers were registered, especially in the transportation of goods.

Food production: 1200 people from outside Romania and the EU were working in the production of food, baked goods and cakes in 2021.

Call-center: with more and more e-commerce platforms gaining traction during the pandemic, call-centers in Romania have hired almost 2000 foreign employees in the past years, especially from the Asian countries, where workers have a good command of English language.

Retail and shoes production: in this industry, almost 1000 foreign workers have been hired and more are expected to arrive, as consumers are slowly returning to brick and mortar shops.

Romanian farms are hiring personnel from Asia Also in this field, foreign workers were called upon, most of them coming from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. They only must learn a few words in Romanian, enough to complete basic tasks around animals in the farm.
