Hypatia.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sculpture by: Odoardo Tabacchi; depicting Hypatia moments before his death. 1874
Tabacchi’s masterpiece is a poignant and emotive tribute to the brilliant female classical mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, Hypatia of Alexandria (circa 350/370 - 415 AD), who was head of the Neoplatonic School of Alexandria.
Relatively little has survived of Hypatia’s work. However, she is understood to have written many collaborative works with her father Theon Alexandricus, and is credited with revising Ptolemy’s Almagest.
Hypatia died as a result of being caught in a feud between the Roman governor of Alexandria, Orestes, and Cyril, the zealous rabble-rousing Bishop of Alexandria.
Regarding her as a Pagan confident of Orestes, a Christian mob set upon the mathematician as she walked through the streets of the city.
They dragged her to a church and stoned her to death with tiles, before flaying her, mutilating her body, and burning her limbs.
Reciting her murder, the Christian church historian Socrates Scholasticus concluded: "Surely nothing can be farther from the spirit of Christianity than the allowance of massacres, fights, and transactions of that sort” (Historia Ecclesiastica). Her murder was viewed by her contemporaries as an abomination, and has subsequently been seen as marking the death of Classical civilisation.
Tabacchi’s marble captures the moment before Hypatia’s agonising death.
Tied to a post with a titular plaque inscribed with her name, Hypatia confronts her gruesome fate with shocked, open-mouthed expression, but intense, piercing, gaze. Stripped of her clothing and bound to a stake, Tabacchi’s statue embodies the appalling indignity of the scholar’s death. It is a reminder of the fate of intellectuals in history who have found themselves at odds with brutish ideology, and, viewed through a modern lense, is, perhaps, a symbol of the oppression of womankind, embodied in Hypatia, who was a rare example of a high ranking and renowned female public figure in antiquity.
I hope a museum bought it.

Josefa de Ayala e Cabrera (1630-1684) - The Penitent Magdalene Comforted by Angels by Pau NG
Josefa de Ayala e Cabrera (1630-1684) - The Penitent Magdalene Comforted by Angels
Josefa de Ayala e Cabrera, known as Josefa de Óbidos, was one of the most celebrated Portuguese artists of the 17th century, famed as a painter of still lifes and religious subjects, as well as being an accomplished engraver. The daughter of Portuguese painter Baltazar Gomes Figueira and his Spanish wife, Catarina de Ayala y Cabrera, Josefa was born in Seville. Her family returned to Portugal and was settled in Óbidos by 1634. Though she entered religious training at the Augustinian convent of Santa Ana in Coimbra, she ultimately decided not to take vows and by 1653 had returned to Óbidos. Josefa never married and, most remarkable for the time, lived as an independent woman earning her own living from her paintings which were mostly commissioned by convents and monasteries.
This painting on copper is a relatively late work by the artist and one which beautifully expresses her piety and the deep sense of mysticism that pervades much of her oeuvre. The Magdalene is depicted at the very moment of her conversion. Still attired in rich satin robes, she has swooned in ecstasy before a vision of heaven in the form of musical angels set against swirling clouds, while two kneeling angels tenderly support her. In the foreground can be seen her usual attributes: the ointment jar, a skull and a scourge, to which the artist has carefully added the detail of dried blood. It seems certain that Josefa knew works by Francisco de Zurbarán (indeed several of his panel paintings were included in inventories of her father’s, uncle’s and sister’s properties) and his influence can be seen here in the luminous touches of white and cream, and in the facial types and textiles.

'All the heads are full of personal force and character, especially the woman's with heavy brilliant hair and glittering white skin, like hard smooth snow against the sunlight, the delicious thirst and subtle ravin of sensual hunger for blood visibly enkindled in every line of the sweet fierce features.' albert sublet
selene
1880, oil on canvas
When Albert Aublet exhibited Séléné (later known as The New Moon), at the Salon of 1879, the work was accompanied by a poem written by his friend, Charles Grandmougin (translated from the French):
Barely hatched, the silver stars are trembling,
At the foot of the golden mountains the lake becomes obscure,
And, through thin pink clouds, she is sailing,
The blonde Séléné is awaking into the azure;
Like a rounded arch, she is floating and rising,
Slowly stretching her beautiful rejuvenated body,
Eyes closed, and savoring at the heart of the infinity,
All the delights from the night and the dreaming.

- Blog 2 Street art is not the most common form of art in Japan. Even works created by famous artists are quickly taken down once discovered. However, this Astro Boy graffiti has existed in Japan for over a decade. The tribute to Osamu Tezuka’s iconic robo-wonder could be seen on the bridge below the JR tracks near Shibuya’s Tower Records. Astro Boy, as one of the most recognizable anime characters in Japan, has his concepts and images deeply engraved in people's hearts. "Astro Boy" is a science fiction manga created by Japanese manga artist Osamu Tezuka and serialized in the "Shonen" manga published by "Kobunsha" from 1952 to 1968. In an era where technology coexists with humanity, he is a perfect robot and strives to become more human-like. "Astro Boy" almost caused a sensation throughout Japan when it was released. This brave, intelligent with over 100,000 horsepower, capable of doing anything little robot was almost loved by everyone. His fame grew larger and even gained success in overseas promotion. Since the French artist Invader painted him under a subway station, Astro Boy has become a habit for Japanese people to see him every day when they commute, and they all believe that Astro Boy is protecting them every time they see him. The same type of work as the one before Invader was auctioned off for 1.22 million US dollars at Sotheby's. Therefore, this work of the same series has also received a lot of attention. The fame of the artist and Astro Boy himself has made this work extra famous. Therefore, this work has become a famous attraction in Tokyo Shibuya.
