Earl Cameron (1917 - 2020) was the Bermudian born actor whose move to England in 1939 would later lead him to become one of the first black performers to break into the British mainstream. Earl's breakout role in the 1951 film noir POOL OF LONDON was profound not just because he co-starred a time with the black leading man was virtually nonexistent on British screens but his character was also involved in an interracial romance (the first in British cinema history) between a white woman, played by Susan Shaw. • Unfortunately, Earl would often be overlooked and have to take much smaller roles, like Bond's chauffeur in THUNDERBALL, as British directors would look to African-American actors like Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis, and Brock Peters to fill in the leading roles. • Earl also had a very robust career on television with roles on DANGER MAN, THE PRISONER, even finding his way onto the DOCTOR WHO in 1966. In his story, 'The Tenth Planet' Earl portrayed the first black astronaut ever onscreen (his suit was famously repurposed for the bounty hunter Bossk in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK). • After almost 40 years of work on stage and screen Cameron later gave up acting in the late 70s and moved to The Solomon Islands with his family, running an ice cream shop called Mr. B-Kool. After his wife passed away in 1994 Earl returned to England and begin acting again even finding work well into his 80s and 90s in small roles with THE INTERPRETER, THE QUEEN, and INCEPTION. #RestInPictures #EarlCameron #RIP https://www.instagram.com/p/CCloVWCFkDg/?igshid=1wsihyjge5sy

@equalitygroupglobal by 👏🏾#BlackHistoryMonth is the perfect time to reflect upon and acknowledge Earl Cameron - a 101-year-old British actor who became one of the first black actors to take up a starring role in a British film & is most known for his part in a 1951 film, Pool of London. “No doubt about it. Unless it was specified that this was a part for a black actor, they would never consider a black actor for the part. And they would never consider changing a white part to a black part. So that was my problem. I got mostly small parts, and that was extremely frustrating – not just for me but for other black actors. We had a very hard time getting worthwhile roles.” - recalls Cameron in his interview with @theguardian. ✊🏿As a nation we have progressed and you can see more diverse talent appearing on the screen, however, there is still so much more that needs to be done towards eradicating prejudice and bringing equal opportunities to all. Earl Cameron, CBE is a Bermudian actor. Along with Cy Grant, he is known as one of the first black actors to break the "colour bar" in the United Kingdom. With his appearance in 1951's Pool of London, Cameron becomes the first black actor to take up a starring role in a British film. According to Screenonline, "Earl Cameron brought a breath of fresh air to the British film industry's stuffy depictions of race relations. Often cast as a sensitive outsider, Cameron gave his characters a grace and moral authority that often surpassed the films' compromised liberal agendas."He also had repeated appearances on many British science fiction programmes of the 1960s, including Doctor Who, The Prisoner, and The Andromeda Breakthrough. His next major film role following his work in Pool of London was in the 1955 film Simba. In this drama about the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, Cameron played the role of Peter Karanja, a doctor trying to reconcile his admiration for Western civilisation with his Kikuyu heritage. That same year Cameron played the Mau Mau general Jeroge in Safari. From the 1950s to the present day, Cameron has had major parts in many films, including: The Heart Within (1957), in which he played a character Victor Conway in a crime movie again set in the London docklands; and Sapphire (1959) in which he played Dr Robbins, the brother of a murdered girl; and The Message (1976) – the story of the Prophet Muhammad. Cameron has had roles in a wide range of TV shows but one of his earliest major roles was a starring part in the BBC 1960 TV drama The Dark Man, in which he played a West Indian cab driver in the UK. The show examined the reactions and prejudices he faced in his work. In 1956 he had a smaller part in another BBC drama exploring racism in the workplace, A Man From The Sun, in which he appeared as community leader Joseph Brent, the cast also featuring Errol John, Cy Grant, Colin Douglas and Nadia Cattouse. #EarlCameron #islandpeeps #Bermuda (at Bermuda)
