What memory would your OC rather just forget?

I think he'd wish he could forget that he was given to the church as a baby. Not necessarily because he wants to reunite or even know his birth parents, he doesn't. But it's a constant reminder that he, quite literally, doesn't belong there. That he was given away as if he was a tool or some material good. It's just a lot to carry around with you.

What is your OC's fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?

Fear of failure. Something that has only recently made itself evident to him (and me lol). In a way, he's a people pleaser. He doesn't want to disappoint those around him. He fears the ripple of consequences that might stem from his domino falling first, and doesn't want to be the person responsible for a larger collapse, so he sort of keeps to his duty as a cog, despite how he might not align with the objective.

How far is your OC willing to go to get what they want?

I would say... not very. He's lazy, certainly, but he's also sheltered, incredibly inexperienced, and lacks the means to get what he wants through pure brute strength, power or smarts. That being said, if the obstacle is something he can overcome, I think he'd be more inclined to actually try.

What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?

I made Kyrie almost as a blank slate so that I could easily adapt him to the circumstances of the story. Because CotS is both interactive and filled with characters I didn't create, he had to be someone who could blend well with all types of people, and not have many "hardstops" so to speak, morally or otherwise. But along the way I've tried to make someone who is an "open template" entertaining, and I think Kyrie's almost lackadaisical unbothered humor emerged from all of ~that~. I didn't go in planning him to be such a huge fucking troll, but I'm glad he has his "thing". In a story with so many strong personalities, it would have been easy to get overtaken by the other cast members.

Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?

"That's abominable." Because it's just so damn funny.

What is your OC's weapon of choice? Have they ever actually used it?

Yes, he has one, and no he doesn't use it. And it's been called into question multiple times in the story, and I still don't think a damn one of them knows the actual truth yet lmao. It's funnier that way. It wouldn't save him from getting murdered, obviously. It would probably just get him murdered faster.

If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?

Absolutely. If he wasn't so hot. Because honestly every time I look at him I just want to punch him in the face so 100% the conversation would go no where and I'd get arrested.

Does your OC have a faceclaim? If so, who?

No he doesn't.

What is the worst thing you have put your OC through story-wise?

I kind of... took his sister. Mean Jade go grr. I have this terrible habit of killing off loving sisters. I leave the bad ones though. Elsera says hi.

How does your OC behave when enraged?

He's one of those awful people who just gets stoic and civil when angry. As Tay said while having the absolute pleasure of being on the other end of it: that's probably worse. He's not been confronted with a situation that would make him exceptionally angry though, i.e. nothing life or death, so maybe that would change.

Does your OC have any illnesses or disorders? How do they handle it?

He doesn't.

What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?

I think it would be loss. Which I guess is a generic answer, since it's pretty typical of human nature not to handle loss well. But I think when you have so very little in your life that is truly meaningful, then you're grasping at straws and have nothing to distract you from your grief. I think in the story currently, he's in a constant state of bracing. Trying to remain outwardly hopeful even though his body is already starting to reject the premise that things will turn out well, and that putting so much mental strength into denying it, degrades his focus in other facets of his life. Outside of the few moments where he's truly and genuinely amused, I do feel he's starting to lose himself under the pressure he would have, otherwise, been able to stand against without hesitation. I can't really imagine him in a place where he has to accept that loss is real, and I don't know how or if he can cope with it when it does.

What is your favorite thing about your OC?

I love what a huge fuckin TROLL he is. Sorry, it's so entertaining to me. It's one of my main reasons for preferring him with ~certain~ members of the cast. Mostly the ones who are ripe for riling up ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Can you do a deep dive/explanation on the newest Rebirth trailer? Because I feel like people are gonna be screeching "alternate timelines/worlds again."

Okay, I have some thoughts. Especially since people seem to have forgotten a few things. Like this isn't the first trailer.

This was in the first trailer, which also revolved around Zack's supposed survival. It also brings up Cloud's fragile mental state. We know he's delusional. We've seen it. Cloud dragging that sword to Midgar in CCR, EC and then being shown at the station with Tifa bringing him out of his zombie state, which the devs have said is canon to Remake.

If Zack's alive and dumped Cloud on Kyrie, and kept his sword, how did Cloud get it and himself to S7? And do people really believe Zack would dump Cloud on a stranger? Or is that something more in line with the pessimistic Cloud who believes eventually everyone will abandon him because he's just "not good enough"?

We're supposed to believe Elmyra is talking to Zack here because we can see her in the BG. She's not talking to him though.

As @enigmaphenomenon pointed out on twitter, nobody talks to Zack. Not in this trailer or any other.

Did we see Kyrie reply to his request? We did not. All we saw was Cloud's body fall on her, much like the black cloaks do when they're shambling around.

As for the key art, that's a metaphorical world being talked about, not a physical one.

And then there's the character intros that some people are taking as confirmation. Since when does SE drop huge spoilers in intros?

Zack being assumed alive is how they've portrayed him the entire time. That's part of the mystery that needs solving for Cloud to be whole. It's the same as calling Cloud a soldier when he isn't, and saying Biggs, Wedge and Jessie are dead when we were shown Biggs alive at the end of Remake.

You can't take that info at face value.

It's like when people said Jill is a sibling to Clive then stfu when it turned out they were suuuuuper wrong 🤣

All we know for sure is Cloud is delusional and believes and sees things that aren't true. He's the unreliable narrator, Sephiroth is the liar and Zack is the mystery.

They've always been shown as those things.

I was wondering if you could clear up, or provide your perspective on the train graveyard flashback(?) we get with child!Aerith playing hide and seek and not being found. Was that something that actually happened or just something the Specters did to mess with her? And if it did happen, why wasn't she found and then how did she get home? Elmyra come looking for her?

I could've sworn I had a post about this, but I can't find it, so I guess not.

We're supposed to believe Aerith was always a "lonely child" who nobody played with. In tkaa that's true, the local kids thought she was creepy and avoided her. That's from Kyrie's pov. However, in ToTP, which is Aerith's pov, we see they did play with her, and also in EC, she was friendly with the leaf house kids, so it could be her overdramatic personality acting like she had "no friends" when the truth is she just didn't confide in anyone because she believed she was too special for them to understand. It's pretty much the same concept as with Sephiroth, only his loneliness stemmed from his superior abilities and the expectations Shinra put on him.

So the train graveyard.

This is battle info for eligor since he's the one orchestrating events.

He goes after vulnerable and emotional people, so tries it on Tifa first, but fails because it redoubles her resolve to get home. Aerith is immature and more susceptible to his tricks. She gets swept away (not far, she's literally just around the corner from where Cloud and Tifa are) and then isolated and put into this mindset of being lost and alone like a child. It never actually happened to her for real as a child. Elmyra was very over protective, and the Turks were always watching her, so the one time she ran away she was rescued very quickly, and that had nothing to do with kids or hide and seek.

It's all just a plot by eligor to kill the people intruding on his domain. Aerith was gonna be his first victim, then he'd isolate Cloud and Tifa and take them out.

Milwaukee 129, Brooklyn 115: Giannis is ballin'. Simple as that. 31-10-10. The Bucks extended their NBA best record to 25-10, seven of eight.

Houston 108, New Orleans 104: James Harden scored 41 points becoming the first NBA player since Oscar Robertson to record at least 35 points and five assists in seven consecutive games. Harden with three consecutive 40-point games.

Washington 130, Charlotte 126: The Wizards without John Wall (season-ending heel surgery) had seven players score in double figures. Kemba Walker scored 47 in a losing cause.

Boston 112, Memphis 103: The Grizzlies blew a 19-point lead. Kyrie Irving 26 points and 13 assists.

Atlanta 111, Cleveland 108: The Hawks have won five out of their last six games. Vince Carter at 41 scored 21 points.

Utah 129, New York 97: The Knicks trailed by as many as 40.

San Antonio 122, Los Angeles Clippers 111: LaMarcus Aldridge 38 points and 7 rebounds. DeMar DeRozan with a 25-13-6 assists game. The Spurs have won five of their last seven games.

Golden State 115, Portland 105: After losing at home to the Blazers two nights ago, Golden State got 32 from Klay Thompson. Damian Lillard scored 40 points for the fifth time this season.

Denver 122, Phoenix 118: The Nuggets Jamal Murray scored 46 points despite an injured right ankle. He buried nine-threes.

Eastern Conference Playoffs First Round (TYTSports)

The first round of the playoffs tips off on Saturday. The playoffs shape up to be really fun this year, with storylines all around. Check out my Eastern Conference First Round series thumbnails and predictions, followed by a TYTSports video featuring me and Jason Rubin.

Celtics (1, +2.7 DIFF) vs Bulls (8, +0.4 DIFF). As I point out in the video below, this is a very strange season in the East. One example is this series, because the Celtics just aren’t as good as a number one seed typically is. Thus, by a measure such as point differential (DIFF), the Celtics are a slight favorite in this series but not by all that much. I pick the Celtics to win in 6, because they do have slightly better talent but, more importantly, they fit together and can synergize. 

Isaiah Thomas is the clear offensive general, with several solid lieutenants at other positions...that all happen to be good on defense, to make up for his short-comings (no pun intended). The Bulls, on the other hand, are a group of talented players that almost look like names drawn from the hat. Jimmy Butler is clearly their best player, but Dwyane Wade replicates a lot of what he does as the second best player, and Rajon Rondo replicates a chunk of what both of them do as (I guess?) the third-best player. It will be fun to watch Rondo, though, in the playoffs and against his original team. But the Celtics should win.

Cavaliers (2, +3.2 DIFF) vs Pacers (7, -0.2 DIFF): More strangeness. The Cavs are the defending champions, and clearly should be the class of the East. For most of the season they were, even as they were clearly pacing themselves. They messed around and let the Celtics, Raptors and Wizards get close, but it still seemed ineviteble the Cavs would take the top seed. This was true even last week, when they blew out the Celtics in what should have been the deciding game. But mixed around all the expectations, the Cavs just started losing. The defense wasn’t good, they couldn’t find a groove together, nothing. LeBron’s, Kyrie Irvings’ and Kevin Love’s fantasy numbers were all solid down the stretch, but they team wasn’t good. 

The Pacers, meanwhile, are one of three EC teams to make the playoffs with a negative DIFF. They have no business making this a competitive series, even though Paul George (and now Lance Stephenson) won’t back down or be intimidated at all by dealing with LeBron. I’m picking the Cavs in five, here, because in my heart I still believe they’ll remember who they are and find their level.

Raptors (3, +4.2 DIFF) vs Bucks (6, -0.2 DIFF): The Raptors actually have the highest DIFF in the Eastern Conference this season, a stat that is often predictive for who has really played the best, more reliable than record. But, be that as it may, they still ended up in the third slot in a really bad year for that. This means that they’d have to face the Cavaliers in the second round (if they make it) instead of the conference finals, and that they’d conceivably have to win two straight series without home court advantage to win the East. A tall task. But with Kyle Lowry healthy again, DeMar DeRozan having stepped up as an impact scorer this season, and trades/development that have them with strong role players and defenders in the middle and on the wing, the Raptors are a formidable squad this season.

The Bucks, for me, are all about the Greek Freak. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a superstar, the most improved player in the league, and incredibly fun to watch. I don’t think he can carry his squad past a very solid Raptors team, but I look forward to watching him try. Raptors in five.

Wizards (4, +1.8 DIFF) vs Hawks (5, -0.9 DIFF): Further illustrating the oddity of the East, ALL THREE of the other series besides the #1 vs #8 feature larger differences in DIFF than the #1 vs #8 match-up. This includes the 4/5 series, which is usually a toss-up, but where the Wizards should be the clearly better team. The Hawks have playoff experience from the last few seasons, but they have worse personnel, have played worse, and outside of that inexplicable two-game winning streak over the Cavs last week they’ve shown nothing to indicate they have any business as a second round team.

The Wizards are streaky, led by explosive backcourt John Wall and Bradley Beal. They’ve played better than the Hawks this season, and are the more fun team to watch. Wizards in five.

    일이 꼬인다는 건 바로 이런 걸 말한다. 지금쯤이면 아방궁을 향해 신나게 돌진하고 있을 시간인데….빌어먹을, 엉뚱한 곳에 끌려오게 되다니. 게다가 이 새끼는 왜 또 여기 있는 거냐고요?????

안 그래도 평소 사이가 안 좋은 안조파 후계자이자 부두목인 요시오가 능글한 표정을 지으며 술잔을 기울이고 있다니….이 무슨 엿 같은 경우가!

  “왜 회장님이 아니라 네놈이 여기 있는 거냐?”

  가키하라는 눈살을 찌푸리며 형님이란 호칭은커녕 늘 그래 왔듯이 말을 까버린다. 대여섯 살 연상이긴 하지만 난 저놈의 부하가 아니니까.

  “그 노친네가 네 애비가 거꾸러지는 걸 꼭 두 눈으로 직접 봐야겠다고 우기는 바람에 양보해드렸다.” “쳇. 회장님은 몸도 불편하신데 그냥 편히 기다리실 것이지.”

  안조파 두목은 과거 현역시절 삼합회와의 항쟁에서 머리에 총상을 입어 아직도 그 후유증으로 평형감각이 틀어져 있다. 그래서 늘 고개를 옆으로 기울이는데, 잘 걷다가도 술 취한 사람모양 비틀거리며 한쪽으로 치우치기 일쑤라 그 옆엔 늘 경호원들이 그림자처럼 따라붙는다. 지금껏 삼합회 특히, 청룡북문이라면 이를 가는 그였지만 조직의 이단자인 자신을 흔쾌히 받아주었다. 뭐, 안조파 정도 되기에 그쪽에서도 여태 함부로 잡아들이지 못했던 거지만.

  “그러게. 그런 몸으론 되려 걸리적거릴 게 뻔한데, 뭐 어쩌겠나? 흐흐흐…..무투파인 네놈과는 죽이 잘 맞았는지 모르지만 노친네의 사고방식은 한물갔어. 이제는 야쿠자도 기업형으로 변하는것만이 살 길이다. 네놈이 요번에 말아먹은 비밀 클럽 같은 건 취미활동 수준이지.” “오~그러셔? 그럼 그 정도는 껌값이겠군. 변상할 필요가 없다니 다행이야. 헤헤헤….”

  일부러 약을 올리는 그 태도에 순간적으로 화가 치민 표정이지만 요시오는 다시금 표정을 푼다. 더욱 편안한 자세를 취하며 감상하듯 위아래를 쭈욱 훑으며. 쩝, 역시 이 외모론 임팩트가 약하려나………

  “네놈의 그 요상한 취미는 이해하기 힘들었는데 이번은 아주 좋군. 솔직히 그 미끈한 몸속에 든 게 미친개라는 건 아직도 반신반의하지만, 뭐 상관없어. 불로불사 같은 꿈같은 소리에 노친네는 홀랑 넘어갔는지 몰라도 난 아냐. 대신 ‘드래곤 애쉬’라면 사정이 다르지.”

  자리에서 일어서더니 바에서 술잔을 하나 꺼내 술을 붓는다.

  “우리 천천히 사업구상이나 해볼까? 자, 이리로 와서 한잔 하시지?”

  가까이 와서는 은근슬쩍 허리를 감싸 안자 그 손길을 매섭게 탁 쳐버렸다.

  ‘……….이게 어디서 친한 척이야? 미친개 취급하며 무시할 땐 언제고.’

  앙숙까진 아니지만 같이 술잔을 기울이고 싶은 상대는 아니다. 더욱이 단둘이는.

  “너무 가까이 아방궁에 접근하면 감시대가 뜰 텐데?” “거기까진 안가. 단지 불꽃놀이를 구경하기에 최적인 장소로 갈 뿐이야. 그게 더 무드있고 좋을 거 같아서.” “무드같은 소리 하고 자빠졌네.”

  씨발. 저놈 주둥아리에서 무드란 말이 나온 건 이 몸의 정조가 불안하다는 거와 같다. 맘에 드는 미형이라면 남녀 안 가리고 따먹는다는 걸 알고 있었지만, 설마 이 몸에까지 군침을 흘릴 줄이야. 그야 이 정도 미모라면 그럴 만도 하지……가 아니랏! 그렇다해도 이따위 싸울 줄도 모르는 자식에게 깔리고 싶은 마음은 추호도 없다. 차라리 렌카짱의 데카이군 3호가 백배 낫지.

  ‘젠장. 역시 내가 직접 가야겠어.’

  일부러 제3국 용병들을 투입하긴 했지만 잔인하기가 이를 데 없는 멕시코 마약 카르텔 놈들은 흥분하면 적이고 아군이고 가리지 않을지도 모른다. 고용주가 없는 자리라면 더욱더. 얌전히 인질로 잡혀있는 건 당최 성미에 안 맞다. 원래부터 자신은 어디로 튈지 모르는 미친개가 아니던가.

  ‘그래. 미친개는 미친개답게 날뛰어야지. 크흐흐……’

  주인도 몰라보는 게 바로 미친개의 특징이다. 하물며 그 아들 새끼 쯤이야.

                정자 안으로 들어서는 세이시로를 맨 처음 맞은 건 바로 렌카다. 팔짱을 낀 채 기둥에 기대 서 있던 그녀는 한쪽 다리를 입구에 척 걸��며 진로를 가로막았다.

  “이게 누구시더라. 요즘 신부들은 방송국 일도 거드나 보지?”

“못 할 것도 없죠.”

  사무적인 어조에도 불구하고 그녀는 재미있다는 듯 웃으며 기다란 손톱으로 그의 돌처럼 탄탄한 가슴팍을 쓱 그어 내린다.

  “역시 예상대로 조각같이 잘생긴 얼굴이네. 후후후….금욕을 지켜야 할 신부 주제에 이렇게 섹시하다는 건 반칙 아닌가?”

  붉은색 치파오 사이로 허벅지까지 드러난 흰 다리와 새빨갛고 뾰족한 하이힐은 보통 남자라면 시선을 빼앗길 만큼 요염했지만 세이시로는 그녀에게 형식적인 미소도 짓지 않은 채 무표정하게 말한다.

  “칭찬은 감사합니다만, 좀 비켜주시죠? 아니면 렌카 박사님의 다리가 부러지고 말 겁니다.”

  예의 바른 어투지만 그 내용은 단호하기 짝이 없다. 그러고 보니 이 남자, 전에 가차 없이 걷어차 날려버린 적이 있다. 조금의 망설임도 없이.

  “이봐, 여성에 대한 매너 따윈 쥐꼬리만큼도 없군. 신부 주제에.” “필요하다면. 앞길을 가로 막는 건 무조건 제거하는 게 제 신조니까요. 남녀노소 불문하고.” “…………..”

  아름답지만 그 안에 생명이 느껴지지 않는 그의 진홍빛 눈에서 전율을 느낀 그녀는 말없이 다리를 내린 채 옆으로 비켜섰다.

  “Thank you for your cooperation.”

  유창한 영어 발음으로 가벼운 목례를 남기며 그녀를 지나쳤다. 좀 더 앞으로 걸어나가며 그는 주위를 쓱 둘러본다. 꽤 넓은 그 정자 안은 중심부의 원형 테이블과 역시 원형 소파처럼 생긴 의자 외엔 별다른 가구가 보이지 않는다. 그 가운데 달리 숨을 곳을 찾지 못한 사람처럼 안절부절못하는 가키하라로 – 그 내면은 바로 스바루군이란 걸 이젠 알고 있지만 – 보이는 형상이 있다.

  “다친 곳은 없습니까?”

  예상 밖의 질문에 스바루는 대답이 궁해졌다. 그가 여기까지 찾아왔다는 건 가키하라를 잡으러 온 걸까? 아니면…… 그를 본 순간 너무 기뻐 심장이 속절없이 두근거렸지만, 그렇다고 스스럼없이 달려갈 형편도 아니지 않은가.

  “아….그다지….다치지는….”

  그의 눈에는 보이지 않을 테지만, 그렇다고 거짓말하기도 뭐해 대충 얼버무리자 어느새 다가왔는지 세이시로가 왼손을 턱 잡았다.

  “앗!!”

  말없이 그 손을 잡은 채 얼굴 가까이 끌어당긴 그는 한결 가라앉은 목소리로 말했다.

  “약 냄새가 ���껴지는군요. 얼굴에도….” “이…이건 어쩌다 보니.”

  재빨리 그 손을 빼내고 싶었지만 세이시로는 놔주지 않는다.

  “…………”

  그런 그를 잠자코 지켜보는 세이시로. 스바루로선 그가 가키하라와 자신의 영혼이 스와핑되었다는 걸 알고 있는지 알 수가 없다. 하지만 알고 있다 하더라도 자신은…..

  “그렇군요. 인사가 늦었지만….” “?”

  세이시로는 장갑을 낀 손으로 꽉 부여잡고 있던 스바루의 붕대 감은 손등에 키스했다.

  “선물 감사합니다, 나의 스바루군.”

  그 말과 행동에 가키하라의 몸을 입고 있는 스바루는 벼락이라도 맞은 듯 펄쩍 뛰었다.

  “놔….놔주십시오! 나는…….당신의 스바루군이 아니에요!”

  그에게서 떨어지고 싶지 않다. 하지만 동시에 가능한 멀리멀리 달아나고 싶다.

그건 전에도 그랬었지만, 지금은 사정이 다르다. 그의 눈앞에 있는 자신은 가키하라의 육체인데다 그 영혼마저 완전한 스메라기 스바루가 아닌 가짜 인격에 불과하니까. 그래도 세이시로는 개의치 않는 표정이다.

  “가키하라도 아니잖습니까? 곧 원래의 모습을 되찾게 될 테니 안심하십시오.” “하지만!!! 방법이 없다면……영영 이 몸으로 살아가야 한다면요??”

  그가 기억하고 있는 맑고 기품있는 스바루의 목소리와 딴판인, 절망감에 가득 찬 걸걸한 목소리가 높아지자 세이시로는 렌카가 있던 방향을 힐끔 쳐다본다. 기둥에 기댄 채 방관하며 담배를 피던 그녀는 그의 시선에 그저 어깨를 으쓱거릴 뿐이다. 이런, 시술자도 별 뾰족한 방법이 없다는 건가? 무책임도 정도껏 하시지.

  “그건, 너무나도 가혹한 일이에요………” “스바루군.”

  다른 손으로 그 어깨를 감싸 쥐며 세이시로는 온화하지만 확고한 어조로 그를 안심시키려 애쓴다.

  “최악의 경우, 전 이대로라도 상관없습니다. 더이상 젊지도, 아름답지 않다 해도 당신이 소중한 건 변함없어요. 제 곁에 있어만 준다면 다른 건 아무래도 좋습니다.” “……..!”

  그의 말은 가히 충격적이었다. 말을 잇지 못하는 스바루를 쳐다보며 그는 더욱 부드러운 미소를 짓는다.

  “떨어져 있는 동안 쭉 당신만을 생각했어요. 처절한 과거를 딛고서라도 우리가 함께 할수만 있다면, 증오가 아닌 사랑으로 맺어진 운명의 사람들이라면…..우리를 가로막을 건 아무것도 없습니다.”

  이를 증명하려는 듯 그의 얼굴이 점점 가까이 내려오자 스바루는 흠칫 놀라며 고개를 돌려 외면해 버렸다. 한술 더 떠, 그에게서 풀려나기 위해 마구 발버둥을 치기 시작한다. 상대의 거센 저항에 세이시로의 표정도 살짝이긴 하지만 굳어졌다.

  “왜 저를 거부하십니까? 싫으신가요?” “그런 건!!! 하지만 나는……..이것 놔요, 제발!!”

  그를 사랑한다. 이 세상 그 무엇보다 소중한 존재, 자신이 살아가야 할 이유. 그저 그의 곁에 있을 수 있다는 것만으로도 만족하며 살 수 있다. 그렇게 쭉 생각해왔었다. 하지만, 이제는…….아니다.

  ‘이상해. 이런 건 내가 아냐………!!’

  스바루는 부정하려는 듯 고개를 힘차게 가로 저었다. 설령 애인이라 해도 빼앗아 버리겠다며 자신만만하게 선포하던 렌카. 그런 그녀가 아까 여성의 섹시함을 드러내며 그를 도발할 때 얼마나 속이 타들어 갔던가. 그의 몸에 함부로 손대는 그녀도 너무 꼴 보기 싫었다. 당장 그만두라는 외침이 턱 끝까지 차오를 정도로. 남을 부러워한 적은 있어도 미워한다는 건…..너무나 이질적인 감정이었다.

  ‘이건 마치 내가………!’

  ‘질투’. 그렇다. 이 이상 적합한 단어가 달리 또 있을까? 렌카에게 질투가 난다. 하지만 가장 질투 나는 건 바로 이 육체, 세이시로의 품에 안겨 달콤한 속삭임을 독점하고 있는 가키하라의 육체다!

  “……..부탁입니다, 놔주세요. 이건 내가 감당해야 할 나의 싸움입니다….”

  그런 자신의 추한 면을 들키고 싶지 않아 더욱 저항하는 스바루의 두 눈에 눈물이 가득 고이기 시작했다.

  “이해해주길 바래요. 당신이…..내가 아닌 다른 사람을 끌어안고…….사랑을 속삭이는 건…..정말이지 너무나도 괴로워요. 지금의 나는 가키하라상의 인격 위에 덧씌워진 가짜 인격. 당신이 원하는 스메라기 스바루는…..그 육신 안에 그대로 남아 있어요. 그러니 그 곁에 있어주세요. 나는….그는 반드시 깨어나 당신에게로 돌아갈 테니…….흑…..”

  가늘게 떨리던 그 목소리는 급기야 울음으로 가득 차 버리고야 말았다.

  “……………..”

  세이시로는 잠시 눈을 감더니 곧 순순히 스바루의 몸을 놔준다.

  “알겠습니다. 그러니 울지 마세요.”

  할 수 있다면 그 눈물을 닦아주고 싶지만 거부당할 게 뻔하다. 어쩔 수 없이 그는 아쉬운 듯 꼭 잡고 있던 손 마저 풀어준다. 자신의 욕망에 앞서 세이시로는 스바루의 고집을 꺾을 수 없다는 걸 절실히 깨달았다. 수동적인 기다림은 자신의 방식이 아니지만, 스바루를 사랑하기에 그를 믿을 수밖에 없다.

  “당신이라면 반드시 해낼 겁니다. 그렇다면 저는 제 방식대로 당신을 되찾기 위해 싸우겠습니다. 약속해 주시겠습니까? 그때가 되면 당신은 제 것이 되어주겠다고. 우리 두 사람이 영원히 함께 행복해지겠다고.”

  주르륵 흘러내리는 눈물 사이로 사랑하는 이의 모습이 흐리게 보인다. 스바루는 소맷자락으로 눈물을 훔치며 고개를 끄덕였다.

  “네. 나도……당신과 행복해지고 싶어요. 이번에야말로…….” “기다리겠습니다. 그리고 믿습니다. 사랑하는 나의 스바루군을.”

  차마 발이 떨어지지 않는지 천천히 몇 걸음 뒤로 물러섰지만, 굳게 결의한 얼굴로 그는 몸을 돌려 밖으로 나가 버렸다. 사라지는 그의 뒷모습에 스바루는 힘없이 의자 위로 몸을 내렸다. 테이블 위로 아직도 떨리는 그 손을 힘주어 ��잡더니 그가 키스했던 손 등 위로 살며시 입술을 갖다 댔다.

  ‘세이시로상……당신을 사랑하고 있어요. 이렇게도 간절히….내 몸과 마음을 다해.’

  아니, 자신의 마음은 이미 오래전부터 그의 것이었다. 그리고 지금에야 깨닫게 되었지만 자신의 육체 또한 그를 원하고 있었다. 다른 누구에게도 양보하거나 빼앗기고 싶지 않은, 오직 자신만이 그의 사랑을 독차지하고 싶은. 부끄럽지만 부끄러워해야 할 그런 감정이 아니다.

  ‘아무리 나이가 들어 늙고 흉하게 변한다 해도…..’

  그게 자신의 몸이라면 얼마든지 그와 행복해질 수 있다고 확신한다.

  ‘세이시로상이 사랑하는 나 자신을 믿는 거야.’

  그 결과 자신이 어떻게 된다 해도 만족할 수 있을 것 같았다.

                  신부의 도착으로 인해 아방궁은 온통 활기로 넘쳐났다. 신랑의 손을 잡고 1층 연회장으로 향하자 이를 촬영하며 방송팀이 신속히 따라 붙는다. 느긋하게 페리에서 내린 쿠도 신부도 고하쿠를 안고 안으로 들어섰다. 최상층을 제외한 나머지 층의 바닥을 시원스레 틔워 내부는 마치 대형 경기장처럼 길쭉한 타원형으로 개조되어 있다. 끝이 보이지 않을 정도로 넓은 그 공간은 이미 사람들로 꽉 들어찼고 군데군데 설치된 대형 액정화면으로 무대에서 벌어지는 각종 볼거리가 중계되고 있다. 입구에서 가까운 N방송국 스텝들을 위해 따로 마련된 자리로 안내되자 고하쿠가 손을 흔들며 외친다.

  “미카엘~!”

  주위는 혼잡했지만 홀 안으로 들어서던 세이시로는 곧바로 알아보고 가까이 다가왔다.

  “늦었군. 자네가 먼저 와있을 줄 알았네만.”

  아무런 소란 없이 무사히 진입한 것은 칭찬할 만하다. 자세한 사정이야 모르지만.

  “최상층에서 스바루군을…….가키하라를 만났습니다.” “뭐? 그런데도 그냥 혼자 내려왔단 말인가?”

  쿠도 신부가 멀뚱거린 눈으로 쳐다보자 세이시로는 싱긋 미소 지어 보였다.

  “자신의 싸움이라며 믿어 달라고 하더군요. 제가 할 수 있는 일은 그저 본체 안에 잠들어 있을 그가 깨어날 때까지 그를 지키는 것이라고. 렌카 박사도 옆에 있었지만 스바루군의 말을 따르기로 했습니다. 제 무력함이 불만스럽긴 하지만.”

  불만은커녕 강제로라도 끌고 오지 않은 게 신기할 따름이었다. 하지만 노신부는 격려하듯 힘차게 세이시로의 어깨를 끌어안으며 잘했다고 칭찬해주었다. 인간인 이상 자신의 무력함을 인정하는 것도 성장엔 꼭 필요한 법이니까.

  “걱정 말게. 분명히 뭔가 방법이 있을 테니 다 함께 찾아보세.” “네. 그에 앞서 먼저 사제관으로 돌아가도 되겠습니까? 스바루군의 육신이 걱정됩니다.”

  그러자 쿠도 신부는 고하쿠와 마주 보더니 한숨을 내쉬며 말했다. 정말이지, 그의 머릿속은 온통 한 가지 생각밖에 없나 보다. 첫 사랑에 흠뻑 빠진 10대 청소년도 아니고.

  “미카엘. 좋은 소식과 나쁜 소식이 있네만, 어느 쪽부터 듣고 싶은가?” “? 편하신 대로 말씀하십시오.” “음…….나쁜 소식은 스메라기상 육신에 봉인했던 가키하라의 영혼이 깨어나 버렸다는 것. 그리고 좋은 소식은 그가 어디로 가든 찾아낼 방법이 있다는 걸세.”

  세이시로는 별다른 표정의 변화 없이 그저 고개만 끄덕인다. 언제고 일어날 일이었고, 육체 정도야 얼마든지 다시 찾아올 자신이 있기에.

  “그렇다면 그의 행방부터 알아봐야겠군요. 부탁드립니다, 신부님.” “알겠네. 저쪽 이동 통신사로부터 장비를 빌려올 테니 여기서 기다리게.” 

  안고 있던 고하쿠를 세이시로에게 넘겨주고는 노신부는 서둘러 인파를 헤치고 홀 밖으로 빠져나갔다. 그가 찾기 쉽도록 문가에 기대어 있자 지나가던 사람들 중 한 노부인이 고하쿠와 세이시로를 번갈아 쳐다보며 호들갑을 떤다.

  “세상에~, 어쩜 이렇게 귀여울 수가!! 아빠도 너무 반듯하게 잘생겼고. 엄마를 기다리니?” “………….?” “아유~ 요 포동포동한 볼 좀 봐. 머리칼도 반짝반짝 너무 예쁘구나. 그래, 꼭 천사 같애!”

  노부인이 머리를 쓰다듬자 고하쿠는 부끄러운 듯 세이시로의 목을 끌어안으며 고개를 파묻는다. 이에 세이시로는 노부인을 향해 천연덕스럽게 미소 짓는다.

  “죄송합니다. 애가 낯을 좀 가려서요.”

  그때 급히 장비와 선을 끌어온 쿠도 신부가 노트북과 함께 테이블 위에 세팅하자마자 얼른 고하쿠를 받아들려고 손을 뻗는다. 옆에서 물끄러미 쳐다보던 노부인은 알겠다는 듯 호호호~하며 소리 내 웃는다.

  “손녀가 정말 사랑스럽네요. 아드님도 아버님 닮아 키도 훤칠한 게 참 미남이구요. 자랑스러우시겠어요.” “자, 손녀를 받으시죠. 아.버.지.” ^_^ “하라부지~!” ^O^ “……엉?”

  이건 또 무슨 소린가? 그는 어안이 벙벙해져 시침을 뚝 떼는 세이시로와 장난기 어린 표정의 고하쿠를 쳐다본다. 자신들 둘이 입고 있는 건 신부복이지만 십자가를 옷 안에 넣어서인지 그 노부인은 혼례식 하객으로 온 가족이라 착각한 게 분명하다.

  “아~예, 당연하죠. 하하하…..” ^^;

  팔자에도 없던 아들(?)과 손녀(??)가 한꺼번에 생긴 그는 노부인을 향해 손을 흔드는 고하쿠를 안은 채 쓴웃음을 지었다. 

  드디어 거행된 혼례식과 더불어 호화로운 저녁 식사가 각 테이블별로 즐비하게 차려졌다. 중국어로 모든 순서가 진행되었기에 이를 전혀 못 알아듣는 일본인 손님들을 배려한 차원이리라.

특히 일반인들보다 허세는 쩌는 반면 인내심은 바닥인 야쿠자들을 위해서랄까.

물론 술과 여흥이 있는 본격적인 피로연은 식이 끝나자마자 바로 펼쳐질 것이다. 때문에 여기저기서 식사로 인해 약간의 웅��거림이 있었지만 개의치 않고 식은 엄숙히 진행되었다.

준비된 음식엔 일체 손대지 않은 채 GPS를 이용해 스바루의 육신을 입은 가키하라를 추적 중인 신부 옆에서 고하쿠는 푸딩을 맛있게 먹고 있다.

  “자, 슈이치로. 아~해.”

  간간이 그에게도 스푼으로 떠먹여주면서.

  “방해 전파 때문인가….정밀도가 영 떨어지는데? 반경 20km내라니.”

  그가 인상을 찌푸리자 세이시로도 그의 노트북 화면을 쳐다보았다. 그의 시력으로는 실제보다 화면 영상이 더 흐려서 영 알아보기 힘들었지만.

  “이 위치라면 일단 육상은 아니군요.” “아쉽게도 현재 상태로는 아방궁 내인지 해상 위인지 확인하기 힘드네. 통신차량이 선착장 부근에서 대기해 있다지만 불꽃놀이 때문에 엄청 인파가 몰려들어 통신량이 장난이 아니라서 말야.” “……….”

  두 사람은 각자 생각에 잠겼다.

  “무슨 생각인지 원. 조직에 쫓기고 있는 신세인데다 본거지도 잃었기에 당분간은 멀리 다른 곳으로 숨어버리지나 않을까 생각했는데. 여긴 출입도 엄격히 통제되는데다 다른 조직 야쿠자들도 잔뜩 모여 있어. 스스로 적진으로 뛰어들 이유는 없을 텐데.” “다른 건 몰라도 렌카 박사 때문이 아닐까요? 원래대로 돌아가지 못한다 해도 시술자만 있다면 또 다른 몸을 구할 수 있을 테죠. 아마 짐작건대 혼자가 아닐 확률이 높습니다.” “혼자가 아니라면, 다른 누구의 도움이 있다는 건가? 이제 안조파에서도 눈 밖에 났을 텐데 대체 누가…..”

  쿠도 신부의 말에도 일리가 있다. 돈이 엄청 많이 들었을 그 비밀 클럽이 완전 쑥대밭이 됐는데 누군들 좋아하겠나. 하지만 스바루가 아니라는 걸 들켰을 때도 뻔뻔스러울 정도로 여유만만이던 가키하라의 태도가 떠오른다.

  “신부님, 그가 왜 하필 중요한 누이의 결혼식을 앞두고 스바루군과 육신을 바꾸었을까요? 그것도 체면상 조직에서 수단 방법을 가리지 않고 잡아갈 걸 뻔히 안다면.” “음……..단순히 즉흥적인 성적 유희에 그치는 게 아니라 치밀하게 준비된 계획일지도 모른다는 건가? 그것도 남의 몸을 빌려서라….가키하라답지는 않네만.” “그 허를 찌르는 것일 수도 있습니다. 그런 경우 보통은 암살이나 테러 등으로 흘러가기 마련인데 전자라면 그의 성격상 직접 거행할 게 분명합니다. 실패하더라도 죄를 덮어쓰고 보복당하는 건 스바루군의 육신이니까요. 고통을 기쁨으로 느끼는 변태라면 그것도 유희의 일부분이라며 즐기겠죠.”

  무시무시한 이야기를 눈도 깜짝하지 않고 태연히 말하는 세이시로의 모습에 쿠도 신부는 등골이 써늘해졌다. 가끔 잊곤 하지만 그는 암살자 사쿠라즈카모리다.

  “후자라면 역시 다른 자들의 도움이 필요한데, 이미 내부에 침투해 있거나 생각지도 못한 곳으로 잠입할 가능성도 있습니다. 둘 다 가능할지도 모르고. 혹시 그의 행적을 거슬러 올라가 볼 수 있을까요?”

  그의 말대로 출발점을 성당으로 해서 역추적하자 노트북 화면에 붉은 선이 여기저기 이어졌다.

  “많이도 돌아다녔구만. 신주쿠 뒷골목에 안조파 회장 사무실…..도쿄만 보트 정박지라. 이상하군. 다른 데는 이해가 가는데 이런 곳엔 왜 들렀지? 지금 여긴 텅 빈 공터라 무기류나 마약을 보관하기도 거리상 너무 애매하고….”

  아방궁 바로 뒤편에 해당하는 그곳은 보트 정박지와도 가까운 곳으로 현재는 허허벌판. 오래전부터 버려지다시피 한 땅으로 한때 별의별 루머도 있었지만. 돌연, 쿠도 신부의 머리를 스치는 생각이 있다.

  “잠깐만. 전에 내가 아방궁이 세워질 때 삼합회가 관련되었다는 루머가 있었다고 말한 거 기억하나?” “네. 그 루머는 사실이었구요.” “이 근처에 얽힌 다른 루머도 생각하는군. 2차 대전 당시 이 부근은 뭍이었는데, 어느 지점에 군수 물자를 수송하는 오래된 지하 터널이 있다는 루머가 떠돈 적도 있었지. 얼마 안 가 유언비어라며 슬며시 사라지고 말았지만.” “지하 터널? 그게 아방궁과 이어져 있기라도 한다는 겁니까?” “추론해볼 가치는 있어. 사실 이 정도 규모의 대형 건축물이 세워��자면 수중지지대가 상당히 든든하지 않으면 안 되지. 그 공사엔 천문학적인 비용이 들걸세. 하지만 이미 돌출된 암반이 있다면 이야기가 다르지. 그냥 그 위에 얹으면 되니까. 우연히 발견한 것일 수도 있지만 아마 건축에 관심이 많은 가키하라라면 가능하다고 보네.” “그렇군요. 이 아래층은 대부분 전력장치와 기계실, 그리고 식재료를 보관하는 대형 창고가 있다고 들었습니다. 그 어딘가에 비밀 출구가 있을 수도 있겠군요.” “그건 내게 맡기게. 하지만 GPS가 거기서 끊긴 게 아니니 그 자신은 해상 수단을 이용해서 근처에 떠 있을게 분명해. 직접 쳐들어오는 게 더 가키하라답지만.” “나름대로 사정이 있을지 모르죠. 결국, 렌카 박사 주위로 스바루군도 가키하라도 모여들게 될 겁니다. 그녀를 주시해서 봐주십시오. 전 바깥에서 다른 선박들을 살펴보고 오겠습니다.” “알겠네. 슬슬 식도 끝나가는군. 그러면 곧바로 떠들썩한 피로연이 시작될 거야. 불꽃놀이가 펼쳐지면 온통 그쪽으로 시선이 몰리겠지. 가키하라가 행동을 개시한다면 바로 그때가 될 거네. 아, 혹시 모르니 이것도 가져가고.”

  리시버를 받아 든 세이시로는 포켓에 넣고는 화장실이나 담배를 피우기 위해 홀 밖으로 나가려는 사람들 틈에 섞여 은밀히 홀을 빠져나갔다.

  “와아~~!!”

  각 테이블별로 하객들이 일어서며 박수를 치자 모두 전광판을 바라보았다. 혼례식의 끝을 알리며 신랑이 신부의 붉은 천을 벗겨 내자 신부의 아름다운 얼굴이 연회장 가득 드러났다.

  “오오~~! 과연 絶世佳人!!!”

  풍성한 검은 머리칼을 틀어 올려 꽃과 각종 보��으로 늘어뜨린 화려한 관이 눈부시다. 그러나 아무리 화려해도 조명 아래서 더욱 찬란하게 빛나는 그녀의 미모에 비할까. 너무나도 화사하지만 되려 그녀의 눈빛은 슬퍼 보인다. 아니, 그것을 넘어 어딘가 존재하지 않는 먼 곳을 바라보는 눈빛이라고 스바루는 생각했다.

마치 레인보우 브릿지에 홀로 남겨진 그때의 자신처럼.

  ‘오루하………’

  마음이 통했는지 그녀는 살짝 뒤돌아보며 보일 듯 말 듯한 미소를 머금으며 눈인사를 한다. 신랑과 신부의 인사에 이어 친지들의 인사가 이어지자 하객들은 함성을 지르며 축하인사를 퍼붓는다. 무대에 연회석이 준비되는 동안 수많은 종업원들이 묘기를 부리듯 일사불란하게 하객들의 테이블 위에 술병과 잔을 갖다 놓기 시작한다. 만면에 미소를 머금은 장대인은 술잔을 손에 들었다.

  “오늘 이렇게 자리해주신 여러 하객들께 감사드리며, 이 젊고 아름다운 부부를 위해 다 같이 축배를 드십시다!! 건배!!” “건배~!!” 

  오루하와 류도 준비된 잔을 서로 나누며 시선을 맞추었다.

  “아름다운 내 사랑, 오늘이 내 생애 가장 기쁜 날이오.” “…………….”

  연이어 온 연회장을 울리는 음악이 연주되면서 무희들의 춤으로 피로연이 시작되었다. 장대인은 스쳐 지나가면서 자기 아들을 노려보더니 뭐라고 차갑게 내뱉었다. 스바루는 그저 고개를 숙였지만 옆에 선 렌카가 대신 통역해주었다.

  “그 말인즉슨, 이제 네놈은 필요 없으니 문제 일으키지 말고 부를 때까지 처박혀 있어.란 거네. 자, 그럼 난 늙은이들한테나 가볼까? 행운을 빌어~!”

  마오 박사와 함께 렌카가 어딘가로 가버리자 덩치 큰 조직원들 두 명이 그를 에워싼다. 스바루는 저항하지 않고 이에 따랐다.

  ‘다시 최상층으로 가는 걸까?’

  계속해서 계단을 올라가는 걸로 봐서 아까까지 갇혀있던 그 누각의 방으로 가는 모양이다. 3층에 이르자 갑자기 나타난 네 명의 남자들이 화분 안에서 소음기를 단 총을 꺼내 들어 가차 없이 쏴버렸다. 경호하던 남자들이 쓰러지자 스바루도 도망가려 했지만, 입이 틀어막힌 채 비어져 있는 작은 방으로 끌려갔다.

  “지금까지 기다리느라 존나 지루해 죽는 줄 알았네. 흐흐흐…….”

  안에서 기다리던 남자는 하얀 붕대로 얼굴과 팔을 감은 후나기파 No.2 스즈키였다. 그가 다른 손으로 붕대를 풀자 안에는 작지만 예리한 칼이 드러났다.

  “기대하라구. 네놈이 그토록 좋아하는 고통을 천천히 맛보며 죽게 해줄 테니.”

  지금 이 연회장 안에는 각 조직별로 가키하라라면 죽이고 싶어 안달인 놈들이 하나둘이 아닐 거다. 그러나 먼저 나는 새가 먹이를 먼저 먹는 법. 앞으로의 기대감에 마취에서 풀리기 시작하는 이 아픔마저 잊을 지경이다.

  [푹! 주욱–] “……..읏….!!”

  고통보다도 타는 ��한 뜨거움이 먼저 느껴졌다. 그리고 차가운 칼이 지나가며 베어진 살가죽 사이로 흘러내리는 뜨거운 피의 흐름. 꼼짝없이 붙들린 사지를 떨며 저항해보지만 역부족이다.

  “어떠냐, 가키하라. 기분 째지지? 내가 그 망할 피라냐들한테 물어뜯긴 횟수만큼 천천히 시간 들여 칼 밥을 놔주마. 어디, 웃어봐! 이 미친 개새끼야.”

  그리고 또 한 번의 뜨거움! 구역질이 나면서 입에서 비릿한 피를 토해내는 스바루는 칼로 그어대고 있는 그 상대가 전에 그 클럽 라운지에서 보았던 자임을 기억해냈다. 

  죽음에 이르는 고통과 공포만이 자신을 되찾는 유일한 길.

  ‘아…….나는 이제 돌아갈 수 있는 건가? 이대로…..세이시로상…에게로….’

  온기를 잃어가는 피부 위로 흘러내리는 피가 너무 끈적하게 역겨워 스바루는 눈을 감아 버렸다.

  어둡고 차가운 공간. 왠지 익숙한 느낌에 눈을 뜨자 눈앞에 보이는 건 바싹 말라붙은 거대한 벚나무 한 그루!! 그리고 그 줄기에 칭칭 감겨 거꾸로 매달려 있는 사람은 바로 다름 아닌 식복을 입은 자신이었다!

  ‘어떻게 된 일이지? 왜 내가 여기에……..?’

  떨리는 손을 뻗어 그 뺨에 가까이 대자 따스한 체온이 느껴진다. 그러자 눈을 뜬 상대와 눈이 마주쳤다. 서로의 눈에 동시에 비치는 초록색과 금색의 눈.

  ‘스바루군……..!’

  멀리서 들리는 세이시로의 목소리에 둘은 동시에 그쪽을 향해 고개를 돌렸다. 그가 자신을 부르고 있다. 아니, 사실은 자신이 아닐지도 모른다. 원래의 스메라기 스바루의 영혼. 그 인격의 소유자를 부르는지도. 가슴 속에선 안타까움이 흘러넘쳤다.

  “서두르지 않으면! 어서, 세이시로상이 너를 부르고 있어.”

  스바루는 매달린 상대를 풀어내기 위해 두 손으로 있는 힘껏 가지를 잡아당겼지만 더욱 단단히 조여들 뿐이다. 그러자 매달려 있는 스바루가 고개를 가로젓는다.

  ‘소용없어. 나는 여기서 풀려날 수 없으니까. 그럴 마음도 없고.’ “무슨 소리야?! 원래의 인격은 너잖아? 나는 그저 복사된 가짜 인격. 가키하라가 죽으면 나도 곧 사라져 버릴지도 몰라. 그러나 넌 살아남아 그에게로 돌아갈 수 있어.” ‘우리는 벚나무에 매인 몸. 우리 둘은 절대로 나누어 지지 않아. 네가 가면 나도 가고 네가 남으면 나도 남게 될 거야.’ “무슨 소릴! 지금 고집부릴 때가 아니잖아?”

  때때로 무모할 정도로 완고하고 고집이 센 점은 스스로 생각해도 기가 막혔다. 마음은 조급했지만 이 집착과 광기로 어지럽게 얽혀 있는 결박은 도저히 혼자의 힘으론 불가능하다. 점점 냉기가 주위를 둘러싸는 가운데 거대한 나무는 눈에 띄게 생기를 잃고 말라비틀어져 간다.

  “세이시로상…….”

  수천 년에 걸쳐 대대로 사쿠라즈카모리가 지켜온 ‘사쿠라’. 과거의 기억 속에 있는 ‘사쿠라’는 눈처럼 흩날리는 핑크빛 꽃잎에 휩싸인 채 엄청난 위용과 신비한 생명력을 내뿜고 있었다. 그런데도 지금 이렇게 고목이 되어 죽어가고 있다니…. 스바루는 눈물을 글썽이며 나무를 어루만졌다. 이 ‘사쿠라’는 바로 사쿠라즈카모리를, 세이시로를 의미하니까.

  “세이시로상….죽지 말아요……사라지지 말아요…..”

  레인보우 브릿지에서의 그 처참한 광경이 떠오르자 걷잡을 수 없이 눈물이 쏟아져 내린다. 심장을 저미는 그 고통과 아픔이 비단 세이시로, 그 혼자만의 것이었을까. 그러자 매달린 스바루에게서도 역시 뜨거운 눈물이 아래로 방울져 떨어진다.

  ‘당신을 사랑해요. 당신이 없는 세계는 내게 아무런 의미도 없어요.’ “당신을 행복하게 해주고 싶어요. 그리고 당신이 날 행복하게 해주길 바래요.” ‘세이시로상…….!!’ “세이시로상!!!”

  둘의 마음이 합해지자 눈물로 젖은 각자의 오른쪽 눈에서 빛이 뿜어져 나왔다.  

  두 명의 스메라기 스바루. 두 개의 황금빛 눈. 

  그 두 개의 빛은 어둠을 뚫고 찬란한 황금빛으로 나무를 감쌌다. 그러자 ‘사쿠라’의 뿌리에서부터 점점 따스한 기운이 그 빛과 함께 차오르더니 바싹 마른 나뭇가지 끝까지 확 퍼져나가기 시작했다. 그러자 놀랍게도 줄기 끝이 부풀어 오르더니 초록색 싹이 돋아나 눈 깜짝할 사이에 만개한 벚나무로 변했다.

  ‘스바루군……..!’

  또다시 그의 목소리가 들린다. 아까보다 훨씬 더 가까이에서. 손을 뻗으면 닿을 정도로 가까운.

바로 귓가에서 속삭이는 것처럼, 끊임없이…….

  “돌아가자, 그에게로……” ‘세이시로상에게로……’

  위를 향해 두 손을 내밀자 꽃으로 가득한 가지들은 부드럽게 하나씩 풀어진다. 결박에서 풀려나 식복 소맷자락 사이로 뻗은 가늘고 하얀 손이 그 손을 맞잡자 두 명의 스바루는 위와 아래서 하나로 합해졌다.

  “스바루군!!”

  눈물에 젖은 속 눈썹 사이로 보이는 건 바로 너무나도 사랑하는 사람.

  “……세이시로상.” “………..!! 나의…….스바루군,이군요.” “네. 약속대로…..돌아왔어요. 당신에게로….”

  길게 숨을 내쉬자 그의 커다란 손이 땀으로 얼룩진 이마를 부드럽게 쓸어내린다. 이에 기분 좋은 미소를 지으며 팔을 뻗어 그의 넓은 등을 감싸 안자 두 사람의 몸이 더욱 밀착되어 안도감과 따스함이 전신을 포근하게 감싸준다. 그러자 세이시로도 그 가느다란 몸을 힘차게 끌어안았다.

  “아아. 당신을 믿고 있었어요.” “당신이 날 부르는 소리가 들렸어요. 아주 멀리서도 또렷하게. 몇 번이나….너무나도 기뻤어요.” 

  귓가에서 들리는 서로의 목소리가 너무나 반갑고, 목덜미에서 느껴지는 체향은 숨 막힐 정도로 자극적이다.

  “스바루군…….”

  아방궁과 바지선들 중간쯤에 홀로 멈춰있던 이 캐빈 크루저(모터 요트)는 척 볼 때도 수상하기 짝이 없었다. 돈 많은 호사가가 그냥 불꽃놀이 구경을 하기 위해 몰고 온 것치곤 다른 구경꾼 선박들에 비해 너무나도 조용했다. 아니나 다를까 총을 든 조직원 두 명이 서성거리는 걸 발견하자 세이시로는 제트 스키 속도를 줄이며 눈에 띄지 않게 접근했다.

운전자를 비롯해 밖에서 보초 서던 조직원들을 쉽게 제압하고 아래 선실로 들어서자 우당탕 시끄러운 소음과 함께 날카로운 비명소리가 터져 나왔다. 재빨리 살펴보니 익숙한 실루엣의 누군가가 바닥에서 몸을 뒤척이며 고통스러워 하고 있다. 실제 엉망으로 얻어터진 사람은 바닥을 기어 다니고 있던 다른 한 명이었지만.

  “몸은 좀 어떻습니까? 약 기운이 아직 남았을 텐데 괴롭지 않나요?” “약……..?”

  그러자 머릿속에서 조각난 기억이 언뜻 스쳐 지나갔다. 술잔을 바꿨음에도 약이 든 술을 마셔버리자 온몸이 달아오르며 괴로웠다. 자신을 덮치려는 상대를 힘껏 때려눕혔지만 곧 쇼크로 쓰러져 버렸다. 마치 금단 현상을 앓는 마약중독자처럼 발버둥 치는 자신을 끌어안고 끊임없이 이름을 불러 준 건 바로 세이시로였다.

  “그 남자는 어디에?” “아아. 결박한 후 화장실 안에 가둬놨습니다.” “구해줘서 고마워요…..” “별말씀을. 억지로 미약을 먹이긴 했지만 되려 이미 흠씬 두들겨 맞은 뒤라 제가 손 봐줄 필요도 없었습니다. 뭐 자업자득이죠. 후후후….”

  근데 미약? 무슨 마약의 일종인가…….?

그 점이 조금 마음에 걸렸지만, 스바루는 그가 내민 생수병을 받아들어 반쯤 남은 물을 천천히 다 마셨다. 아직 열기가 남아있는 입술 위에는 그가 입술로 옮겨준 물기가 남아 있는 것 같아 얼굴이 달아오른다. 원래의 모습을 되찾으면 반드시 그에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다.

지금까지 마음속에만 담아 두었던…….더이상 미뤄서는 안 되는 그 말을.

  “저어……세이시로상.”

“네, 말씀하세요.”

  진홍빛 두 눈이 한없이 상냥하게 자신을 바라보고 있다. 이에 용기를 얻어 스바루는 입술을 열었다. 

  “나는 당신을…..사랑해요. 당신이 믿어줬기에, 계속해서 날 불러줬기에 ��찍한 고통 속에서도 포기하지 않고 내가 나를 찾을 수 있었어요. 다시는 당신과 떨어지고 싶지 않아요.”

  그러자 그는 찬란한 햇살과도 같은 미소와 함께 스바루의 귓가에 대고 녹아내릴 정도로 달콤하게 속삭였다.

  “물론입니다. 너무나도 사랑하는 당신을 절대 놓지 않을 겁니다. 이렇게 힘껏 끌어안은 채 그 입술에 뜨겁게 키스하며 이 생명이 다할 때까지 하나가 되고 싶습니다.”

  열기가 느껴지는 호흡이 귓가에 스쳐 지나가자 넓고 강한 품 안에서 스바루는 짜릿한 쾌감에 몸을 떨었다. 그의 진지하고 뜨거운 사랑 고백이 심장에 직격으로 전해진 듯 거세게 요동친다.

  “아…..나도 세이시로상을 절대로 놓지 않을 거예요.”

  조금 전 환상 속에서 보았던 광경이 머릿속에 떠오른다.

  “…..그렇게 어둠 속에서 외로이 말라 죽어가는 고목처럼 되게 놔두지 않을 거예요. 다시는. 그러니 당신도 내가 사랑하는 당신을 사랑해주세요.” “…………!!”

  뭔가 뜨거운 게 서로 맞닿은 뺨을 타고 흘러내린다. 스바루가 고개를 들자 순간 놀라 두 눈이 커진다.

  ‘…세이시로상이……..?!’

  그가 울고 있다. 그런데도 그 자신은 그것을 느끼지 못하는 것 같다. 그가 눈물을 흘리는 것은 처음 보았다.

소년 시절부터 지금껏, 너무나 괴롭고 슬퍼서 그 앞에서 눈물을 보인 건 오직 자신뿐이었는데….. 상처받기 쉬운 섬세한 마음을 지닌 탓에, 언제나 강한 그 앞에서 질 수밖에 없는 자신이었는데….

  떨리는 손을 들어 스바루는 사랑하는 그 사람의 눈물을 닦아 주었다. 그제서야 자신이 눈물을 흘리고 있다는 걸 깨달은 세이시로. 스바루의 부드러운 손길을 감각적으로 느끼며 그는 눈을 감았다.

  “……잃어버린 기억 속의 저는 사랑받을 가치가 없다고 줄곧 생각해 왔습니다. 제가 주지 못하기에 받을 수도 없노라고. 어둡고 차가운 고목 속에 갇혀 있다는 걸 깨닫긴 했지만 누구에게도 도움을 구할 수 없을 정도로 고독했어요. 오직 한 사람. 당신 곁에 있을 때만이 유일하게 꿈을 꿀 수 있었습니다.” “세이시로상……….”

  두근 두근 두근 두근 두근………

  스바루의 심장이 괴로울 정도로 강하게 요동치고 있다.

  “또다시 당신을 힘들게 할지도 모르지만…그래도 당신이 제 곁에 함께 있어주길 바랍니다.” “당신과 함께 할게요. 우리는 동전의 앞뒤처럼 정반대지만 그렇기에….늘 함께 할 수 있을 테니까.”

  슬픔이 아닌 기쁨의 눈물이 쏟아지려는 걸 필사적으로 참으며 고개를 끄덕였다.

  “몸과 마음을 다해 당신만을 사랑하겠노라 맹세합니다.”

  세이시로는 스바루의 양 손등 위에 정중히 키스했다. 과거 처음 만났을 때 그가 자신의 사냥감이라는 표식을 새기듯이. 하지만 이제 이 맹세의 키스는 절대로 사라지지 않으리라.

  “스바루군, 저와 결혼해주십시오.” “흑…….!!!!”

  그의 프로포즈에 스바루의 색이 다른 두 눈에서 참고 참았던 눈물이 터져 나왔다. 그의 양손은 가늘게 떨리고 있다. 하지만 곧이어 스바루는 그 손가락을 깍지끼며 맞잡아 주었다. 서로의 얽혀진 손가락 사이로 뜨거운 체온이 흐른다. 이미 누구의 체온인지 구별할 수 없을 정도로…….   

  ‘어째서 사람은 좋아하는 감정을 갖는 거죠? 아무 쓸모도 없다면 어째서 좋아하게 되는 건가요?’ ‘그건 외롭기 때문입니다. 좋아한다는 감정만 있으면 ‘꿈’을 꿀 수가 있거든요. ‘꿈’도 없이 살아갈 수 있을 정도로 인간은 강하지 않아요.’

  “네에……기꺼이.”

  ‘하지만 저는 정말 스바루군을 좋아합니다. 스바루군에게 똑같은 감정을 강요할 정도로 어리석진 않지만.’

  아니오. 똑같아요. 나도 당신도……외롭고 약한 그저 한 사람의 인간일 뿐. 그러니 이제는 함께 ‘꿈’을 꿔요. 그럼 우리 두 사람은 이제 외롭지도 약하지도 않을 거예요. 스바루는 다가오는 세이시로의 입술을 이번엔 피하지 않았다. 아니, 기쁘게 그를 맞이하며 서로의 입술을 겹쳐나갔다. 부드러움과 촉촉함……그리고 서로의 내부를 공유하는 그 친밀한 행위를 통해 스바루는 지금 눈앞의 이 사람이 너무나도 사랑스럽다고 느껴졌다.

  귀를 찢을 듯한 폭음에 깜짝 놀라 입술을 떼 냈지만 둘은 곧바로 웃어버렸다. 드디어 오루하의 혼례가 끝나고 불꽃놀이를 비롯한 피로연이 시작된 모양이다. 고개를 들자 침대로 개조된 고급 가죽 매트 위의 선루프를 통해 쏟아져 내리는 각양각색의 불꽃의 향연이 펼쳐졌다. 이와 맞춰 대형 스피커를 통해 퍼져나오는 아름다운 연주와 ���루하의 매혹적인 노랫소리가 불꽃과 함께 밤하늘을 보석처럼 수놓는다.
