Hope To Nope The ‘Design Museum’ in London exhibition ‘Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-18’ is on now and more relevant than ever. The exhibition will examine the political graphic design of the past decade through artefacts ranging from traditional posters and banners to the rise of digital media and social networks that have extended the reach and changed the nature of protest. Political events such as the 2008 financial crash; the Obama presidency; the Arab Spring; the Occupy movement; the Deepwater Horizon oil spill; the Charlie Hebdo attacks; Brexit and Trump will be featured in the show curated by the ‘Design Museum' and ‘Graphic Design&’. The show is divided into three sections: ‘Power’, ‘Protest’ and ‘Personality’ that are unified by a large graphic timeline that will dissect the gallery charting the role of new communication technologies such as social media in global events over the past decade. ‘Power’ will explore how graphic design is used by the establishment to assert national and political authority, and how that iconography can be subverted by activists and opponents. ‘Protest’, the largest part of the exhibition, displays graphic design by activists and demonstrators as well as the role played by graphic design in the channelling of anger and crediting solidarity. Finally, ‘Personality’ examines the graphic representation of leading political figures and the organisations such as ‘Anonymous’ which protects individual identities. ‘Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-2018’ runs at the Design Museum from March 28 - August 12, 2018 #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #hopetonope #designmuseum #graphics #politics #antitrump #movement #powertothepeople #london #edelrodriguez #obama #arabspring #occupy #deepwaterhorizon #charliehebdo #brexit (at Design Museum)

"These people are hiding behind the flag and the idea of patriotism it connotes. They have tried to change the language from 'White Supremacist' to 'White Nationalist,' to further hide behind the flag, and the idea of patriotism, but they are espousing the same views as always. They are taking advantage of what the flag guarantees them—freedom of speech—to further an agenda of hatred." #edelrodriguez #illustration #timemagazine #hateinamerica #lovetrumpshate

Hope To Nope “Banning people from entering the country, based on their religion, is the behaviour of a dictatorship, it’s not what America should ever do. When the Muslim Ban was announced, family members were kept from one another, some inside the airport, and the others waiting outside. I was outraged. This is the kind of thing that the Cuban dictatorship had done to my family, toying with people’s lives, and their emotions. It was cruel and went against everything America had stood for in the past. I had a prior image that I had done of a terrorist with a knife, beheading himself, a comment on ISIS’s level of violence. As a reaction to the Muslim ban, I took the existing terrorist image and pasted Trump’s head on it, along with the beheaded statue on one hand, and the terrorist’s knife on the other. I wanted to compare him to an extremist who had killed the American dream. I posted the image online and it received a big reaction across my various social media feeds. A few days later, Der Spiegel magazine got in touch about creating a possible cover on the Muslim ban. I did a number of sketches but none of them were working for them. They saw the beheading image I had posted a few days earlier on my Twitter account and asked if they could run it on their cover. I made some minor revisions and they went ahead and published it. Before the magazine appeared on the newsstands, people around the globe began downloading the image from their Twitter feed and proceeded to start printing giant posters. The image appeared at multiple protests that night and for weeks to come, and led to many newspaper articles and television coverage.” - Edel Rodriguez, Cuban-born Visual Artist. ‘Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008-2018’ runs at the Design Museum from March 28 - August 12, 2018 #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #hopetonope #designmuseum #graphics #politics #antitrump #movement #powertothepeople #london #edelrodriguez #obama #arabspring #occupy #deepwaterhorizon #charliehebdo #brexit (at Design Museum)

@Regrann from @edelrodriguez - My new cover for TIME magazine, "Hate in America", on newsstands today. Creative Director: D.W. Pine III Editor: Nancy Gibbs Interview in TIME: Behind TIME's 'Hate in America' Cover For the Aug. 28 issue of TIME on hate in America we turned to artist Edel Rodriguez to create a cover to capture the aftermath of the Charlottesville tragedy. With his bold, graphic approach, Rodriguez depicts a protester giving a Nazi salute while draped in an American flag. “These people are hiding behind the flag and the idea of patriotism it connotes. They have tried to change the language from ‘White Supremacist' to 'White Nationalist,' to further hide behind the flag, and the idea of patriotism,” says Rodriguez, a Cuban American artist. “But they are espousing the same views as always.” This is his fourth TIME cover in the past two years, including one depicting the Eiffel Tower’s shadow following the 2015 attacks on Paris, and a two-part series of covers on Trump’s “Meltdown" during the campaign. The last one of that series was named Best Cover of the Year in 2017 by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). “They are taking advantage of what the flag guarantees them—freedom of speech—to further an agenda of hatred,” says Rodriguez, who was recently named one of the Top 50 Creatives by Advertising Age. “It’s very coy, with a wink and a nod, but very dangerous.” Rodriguez has illustrated nine children’s books, two of which he has written. He has also created several stamps for the U.S. Postal Service and has illustrated poster and advertising campaigns for many operas, films, and Broadway shows. His artwork resides in the collections of a variety of institutions, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., as well as in numerous private collections. #edelrodriguez #ercovers - #regrann
