We took our Carol trip!

December 10, 2023, my good friend Sarah and I piled in my small Kia and made the 1 hr 40 min trip from Indianapolis, IN to see Cincinnati and Chevoit, Ohio shooting locations from 2015's "Carol." It's the only winter movie that matters to me. Here are some of the key locations we visited.

Shillito Center and art deco exteriors in Cincinnati.

Shillito Center was a department store with art deco features including the beautiful clock pictured above. This was the exterior of Frankenberg's in the film. The Shillito's department store has closed but the beautiful building has been turned into luxury loft apartments!

The other buildings of note were the Bell Telephone Company's "Cincinnati Bell" building--my friend noticed that the decorative border on the building is comprised of a stone pattern of old rotary telephones! The exterior of the now-Hilton Cincinnati is another Carol shooting site, which doubled as New York City's Drake hotel.

This is the exquisite Hilton Cincinnati at Netherland Plaza. As you can see, the art deco influence is strong and the rooms are gorgeous and grand. We were hungry and wanted to have lunch but the only available menu was the Dickens breakfast buffet, priced at a formidable $89! So we enjoyed a drink and a bowl of peanuts at the bar. A quartet of professional singers in Victorian costumes sang Christmas Carols beautifully in the background. The bartender was dressed like they used to dress, in a beautiful tailored slacks, shirt, and vest uniform. He did not work at the Hilton in 2014-2015 but was delighted by our quest. The entryway to the hotel is known as the "Hall of Mirrors," inspired by Versailles.

This is the stone bathroom structure at Eden Park, which was the setting for the Christmas tree farm impromptu photography session. My friend watched Carol to prepare (she called it "fun homework") and I prepared by finding a tam o shanter hat at a thrift store. My parents had the scarf, blonde fur coat, faux fur hat, as part of their repository of items from doing over 25 years of community theater together. The rest of my clothing items are a regular part of my wardrobe. I vacillate between eras but I love 40s, 50s, and 60s best of all. I also think it's likely they filmed the scene of Therese and Richard on bicycle going through a park at Eden Park as well, but can't be totally sure.

Finally, Maury's Tiny Cove Restaurant in Chevoit, Cincinnati is the setting of the first lunch between Carol and Therese. The booth they used for shooting has been preserved and I reserved it ahead of time, although surrounding booths also have pictures from filming hanging over them. It's been long enough that the server didn't know much about the film but told us that a group of excited college students ate there once and requested the same meal Carol and Therese ordered in the movie. I had lasagna as we had not eaten much all day, and a Santa Cosmopolitan from their holiday menu. The food was wonderful and it was obvious a lot of people are regulars. We noted that there are glass windows over the booths now, unlike in the movie, probably added during the height of Covid.

Bonus, but a disappointment:

Carol & Rindy's beautiful house at Grandin Rd has been completely re-done and now looks nothing like in the movie:

And, "that's that"! A truly special and memorable experience.

We talked about the movie some and Sarah asked me which character was the best fit for my personality. Hands down, Abby. I was wide-eyed Therese once, never glam enough for Carol, but Abby will tell you the truth and not blush from it. My hero!

Postcards from Snagglepuss

Meanwhile, somewhere in Beautiful Downtown Cincinnati ...

It can be pretty frustrating trying to park a motorhome downtown in some major city, and not get dumb looks in the process. Especially when you're celebrities in animated form just cruising the countryside--or, in the current circumstances, heading off to the Easter Parade in Gatlinburg, to be led by the Cattanooga Cats even!

Yet, for some reason, you wonder why Longfellow, of all writers, chose to call Cincinnati "the Queen City of the West" back in the day when it rivalled Chicago as a major hog market and processor, in its turn explaining how Procter and Gamble (I assume you know much about them) came to be quite the influence even before sponsoring those midday "washboard weepers" on radio and television ... as in turning waste fat from the hog butchering into soap, candles, lard and also creating Crisco shortening.

But this time around ... it's in a Cincinnati chili parlour somewhere between Fountain Square, long the heart of the Queen City, and Eden Park, just to the east of downtown. And along with my own company--including Huckleberry Hound, Crazy Claws, The King and Sheena and Ruff and Reddy--off to Gatlinburg, in their own way.

For it turns out that the likes of Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Magilla Gorilla, The Banana Splits and the Hair Bear Bunch even, were in the same Cincinnati chili joint. (And need I explain what Cincinnati chili is: It's a chili made without beans, but with a richer spice blend, served atop spaghetti and itself topped with shredded Cheddar cheese.)

Hopefully the moist towelettes were in abundance, even if one of the guests had to bring them along. And were they surprised when our presence got to be noticed, even ordering some Cincinnati chili ourselves.

"I sometimes wonder myself," Huck remarked, "how many here in this here old Cincinnati mistake Cincinnati chili parlours for cheap spaghetti palaces." Which was bound to have Quick Draw McGraw, who probably knows chili in the more Texan manner, steamed up when he remarked "NOW HOLD ON THAR!! How exactly does serving this on spaghetti make this chili when I happen to know what chili is, to begin with?!"

To which it was explained that such was the Cincinnati manner.

"CINCINNATI?!!" exclaimed Quick Draw. "It seems I must have taken a wrong turn at Keokuk ... wherever that is!" To which Babalooie was quick to rejoinder, "I admit taking a liking to this Queekstraw fellow, even if the chili here lacks beans and is served on spaghetti!"

"Which has me pretty surprised there," Hair Bear was quick in adding at the sight, adding that he might try making some such on occasion during the mating season road trip of his madcap trio this summer, "probably in northern Wisconsin, Snag," he explained. "We sort of wonder ourselves if the bears up that way can resist our legendary charms in the sexual arena!"

"How could I have guessed?" sighed I.

"And what must those Cattanooga Cats be thinking," Magilla Gorilla chimed in, "about us being on our way already via Cincinnati?"

In a nearby parking lot, where The Banana Splits parked their school bus rebuild, The CoolBus, that quartet couldn't resist signing the odd autograph or posing for the odd selfie, even with a couple of containers of takeout chili ("for fixing some Chili Cheese Coneys on the road," Bingo was quick to explain, "en route to no less than Gatlinburg!").

Whence a call came on the mobile. Country from the Cattanooga Cats was on the virtual line.

"Snag?"

"Yes, Country?"

"Rather glad you could assist with the Easter Parade in Gatlinburg."

"I just hope the proverbial wrench hasn't been thrown into the plans."

"Would that it were ... but even then, trying to keep an Easter parade low-key, like we're trying to do, may not be that easy. So when you and your party get set up in Gatlinburg, we can meet in our apartment above Cattanooga Klatsche and work the whole out so that such is a surprise."

Yet how can you imagine keeping an Easter Parade in the Queen Mother of Tourist Traps low-key?

So, @randombtsprincessa tagged me in her Tulip Tagged Games, so here we go!

1. Three Current Ships:

1st- Sesshomaru x Sango (Inuyasha): Non-canon as all hell, but I loved this ship back in the day. My daughter has discovered anime, and I'm doing a rewatch of Inuyasha with her and rediscovered the love. Thankfully, people produce fics for this pairing.

2nd- Killi x Tauriel or Killiel (The Hobbit movies): I've been a fan of this pairing from the very moment they shared the movie screen together, and I still am now. The Hobbit was in DESPERATE need of female characters as there were zero in the book, and so Tauriel is a movie only character and their romance is movie verse only. I love the gender flip dynamics on this one. There's an age gap, she's the older one because she's an elf and he's a dwarf. There's a height difference, she's the taller one because, again, she's an elf and he's a dwarf. There is the badass and damsel dynamic, but she's the badass and he's the damsel in distress.

3. Siuan x Morraine (The Wheel of Time): I'll be upfront, I do NOT like the books, but I enjoy the TV series. This pairing has everything, longing, secrecy, tragedy, redemption, sexy hotness, and the fact that they were made for each other. This is a WLW pairing, and I am an unabashed femslasher. I guess I will take this time to bemoan the fact that great WLW pairings get next to no love in fandom while MLM pairings are panted after with an intensity that borders on the desperate. As a queer woman I say this: Tis not fair.

2. First Ship:

Kazami x Sui (NP by Banana Yoshimoto): As a bisexual girl growing up in a time where gay and lesbian representation was few and far between, there was even less about bisexuality. NP was a novel about a young Japanese woman named Kazami Kano who was struggling with, among other things like translating a short story that seems to result in the suicide of everyone who tries to translate it, the notion that she might be bisexual and that she might be attracted to and want to date a woman named Sui. This was the first time I REALLY shipped a pairing, that I invested beyond the norm in a couple. I was just so happy to see this depiction of emerging bisexuality in a young woman, that I gobbled it up. I still own this book, and every now and then, I will reread it.

I just rewatched The Old Guard on Netflix with Charlize Theron. Can't wait for the sequel to come out this year!

5. Currently Reading:

The Ghosts of Eden Park by Karen Abbot: It's a gossipy true crime/history book about bootleggers, murder and Prohibition in 1920's Cincinnati, Ohio. What can I say? Crime is always classier when it's in the 1920's.

6. Currently Watching:

I just finished, as in yesterday, season 1 of Surreal Estate on Hulu. It's a SciFi network show about a fictional real estate agency that specializes in selling haunted houses. It's not a Ghost Hunter style show, it's a regular horror/comedy show. It's really fun and everyone should watch it. Season 2 will be released sometime this year.

7. Currently Consuming:

I just ate 3 pieces of Godiva chocolate that I got for Valentine's Day and drank a passion fruit La Croix.

8. Currently Craving:

Like any good Jew on a cold and windy day, I am craving shakshuka. Which are yolky eggs cooked in tomatoes, with peppers, garlic, other spices, and at least in my family, served over rice.

On Today’s Episode Of Cincinnati’s Most Wanted: The Notorious Nuttle Gang

Few motorists rumbling through the I-71 valley east of town give a thought to the long-lost lair of the notorious Nuttle Gang. For a good portion of the 1880s, however, travelers through that area at the base of Mount Adams lived in fear of the brigands. Alvin F. Harlow, in his “The Serene Cincinnatians,” sums up the legend:

“For several years in the 1880s a band of thugs, the Nuttle gang, harbored in an old railway tunnel, running from Deer Creek under Avondale, which had been years in building and was finally abandoned. A policeman chased one of the ruffians to the mouth of the tunnel one day, but dared not enter it. Not until some of them were caught outside their lair was the band broken up.”

The tunnel in which the Nuttle Gang sheltered from police interference was constructed during a pre-Civil War initiative to run a railroad line from downtown Cincinnati to Dayton. A significant portion of this tunnel was completed, from approximately Elsinore Place to just beyond Eden Park Drive. The line was never completed and the whole project forgotten after other railroads found cheaper routes into the city.

Abandoned tunnels are almost a cliché among outlaw gangs, but the Deer Creek cavern provided superb security for the local ruffians. It was capacious enough to store oodles of boodle, and any invaders peering into the subterranean darkness would be silhouetted against the bright opening, making easy targets. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [27 July 1932]:

“In this era the most notorious of several group of local rowdies was the Deer Creek bunch, known as the Nuttle Gang. They made Dublin Street, or “Turn Back Avenue,” their hangout, but operated over a considerably wider area. Breweries sending wagon loads of beer to Walnut Hills put on an extra keg or two for the Nuttle Gang, nor did the drivers interfere when they took their toll. Wayfarers suffered at their hands and for several years they terrorized that neighborhood.”

One of the Nuttles – Dan, one of the family who gave the gang its name – complained that people blamed every petty crime or disturbance near Gilbert Avenue on the Nuttle Gang, identifying every bum or petty crook collared in that part of town as a member of the group. It cheapened the prestige of the gang, Dan huffed.

Ironically, for a gang that gained such a sordid reputation, the ringleaders – James “Cock” Nuttle and William “Billy” Nuttle – were sons of a policemen killed in the line of duty. The modus operandi of the Nuttles involved swarming a victim, making identification and apprehension difficult. When the gang beat up a grocer who refused to give them liquor on credit in 1879, police filled most of the cells in the Hammond Street station with James Flannery, John Smith, Patrick “Shad” Nuttle, Dan Nuttle, Tom Haydon, Billy Nuttle, Thomas Nuttle, Pat Frasey and Bridget (Yes, a woman.) Flannery.

The next year, according to the Cincinnati Gazette [3 March 1880], one of the Nuttles used the old railroad tunnel to escape from the police. Shad Nuttle and William Burke robbed a butcher on Gilbert Avenue and his cries brought two police officers, whistles blowing, onto the scene. Burke was captured quickly.

“Officer Butler chased Nuttle into the old tunnel at the upper end of Deer Creek, where he hid himself. A watch was placed at the mouth of the tunnel, and Nuttle will be arrested when he concludes to come out. Two of Nuttles brothers were sentenced to the penitentiary Saturday. Another Nuttle is in the Work House.”

The Nuttles’ domain extended so far as to create friction with a West End gang led by Buck Mullaney. After one scrap, Red Morris of the West End boys challenged Billy McGee of the Nuttles to a shotgun duel. Although both gangs showed up south of Covington for the showdown, the challenge devolved into a general free-for-all with numerous injuries. They were a rough bunch. In 1882, Billy Nuttle won a barroom brawl but was later sued by Allen Combs, who lost the tussle. Combs claimed Nuttle caused $2,100 in damages by biting off the end of his nose.

In addition to lawless mayhem, the Nuttles had a legitimate side hustle around election time. The local Democratic Party hired the thugs to maintain order (meaning to chase off any Republican voters) at a couple of East End polling sites. The chaotic and bloody 1884 election inspired a Congressional investigation that highlighted the Nuttles’ strong-arm tactics.

The beginning of the end for the Nuttles came, not from police arrests, but from internal dissension. In 1887, James “Cock” Nuttle was shot and killed by James “Jaydice” Kennedy after an argument about a woman. Even in death, Cock Nuttle caused trouble. As an undertaker’s wagon hauled his body home from Good Samaritan Hospital, the vehicle tumbled down a twenty-foot embankment near some railroad tracks. Nuttle’s coffin shattered and his body was thrown onto the ground. The coroner, called to the scene, ruled that the corpse was intact enough for burial.

In 1894, Billy Nuttle died from pneumonia in the city hospital and his obituary included the dreadful fates of a half-dozen Nuttle Gang members: “Dickety” Quinn succumbed to delirium tremens, “Yap” Skelly shot by the cops, Charley Keegan broke his neck falling from a train, Cocky Smith killed by a rival, George Fay a hunted fugitive, Dan Flannagan jailed in St. Louis.

Once the Nuttles were gone, the Deer Creek Valley was designated as the Hunt Street Dump, Hunt Street being the former name of Reading Road. By the early 1900s, the valley had been completely filled in with tons of garbage and refuse. The retired dump was graded and converted into a playground with six baseball fields. The old railroad tunnel slumbered under the detritus.

In 1951, the city looked into using the buried railroad tunnel as an air-raid shelter, but those plans led nowhere. A decade later, construction for I-71 burrowed through the old tunnel and brought back memories. Si Cornell, in the Cincinnati Post [22 March 1966], revived some of the old tales:

“I-71 construction workers who uncovered the pre-Civil War railway tunnel near Eden Park’s entrance have reported finding old beer bottles (particularly from the Bellevue Brewery) in the rubble. This isn’t particularly surprising. Maybe 80 years ago, when the Deer Creek Commons was an odiferous dump, the ‘Deer Creek Gang’ hung out in the tunnel, through which no train ever ran. Favorite stunt of these notorious loafers was to steal whatever possible from any brewery wagon that ventured anywhere near. This liquid loot was lugged into the tunnel for the gang’s consumption. Wonder is that the construction workers aren’t finding whole kegs, not mere bottles.”
