"Teruko Tawaki Doesn't Smile!"

Summary - Eden notices how few and far-in-between Teruko’s smiles are. So, she takes on the mission to put a smile on Teruko’s face!

Eden stared at Teruko during breakfast. She had a shadow cast over her face, and an almost sinister smile on her face. Eden had noticed how Teruko was often just… there. Sort of dissatisfied. She was never exactly overjoyed about something. Well, it was difficult to be happy about much in their situation, but even then, Teruko’s moments of mild satisfaction are few and far inbetween. So Eden decided that today was the day that she made Teruko Tawaki smile ear to ear.

Teruko just walked into the cafeteria that morning, being one of the last people there. Teruko was always rather late, due to how long it took for her to untangle her hair.

“Good morning Teruko!” Eden greeted, though that sinister look was still on her face. Teruko seemed to notice such an expression. Her eyebrows raised a bit but she seemed to opt to ignore it. She walked in and sat down at the table. “...Morning.” She replied offhandedly.

Eden sat down next to Teruko. And Eden could barely wait to tell Teruko what she had to say. “I have a surprise for you!~” Eden said with a giddy expression. Teruko’s eyebrows raised at that. “Oh?” She said in response. She then realized what Eden’s previously sinister expression meant. “What are you planning–” “I made you a special breakfast!” Eden called out over Teruko, seemingly waiting for Teruko to say something.

“A… special breakfast?” Teruko repeated in a confused tone. Alright. Not the reaction Eden was looking for, but she was getting there.

“Mhm! Usually only one person cooks every morning, and we all take turns. But I decided that because of everything you’ve been doing to help during the… uh…” Eden’s expression soured, “Trials.” She stated. “I decided that you deserve a special treat! Does that sound good?” She explained, her happy expression returning. “I… guess.” Teruko muttered. “That’s oddly generous of you. So you made this breakfast just for me?” She questioned. “Mhm! Let me go get it!” Eden called out before rushing into the kitchen. She returned with a plate, and on it was a clearly lovingly made cinnamon roll. “Does anyone know about this ‘gift’ for me?” Teruko questioned. She crossed her arms and looked at Eden as she put the plate in front of Teruko. Teruko looked suspicious of it more than anything.

“Hu knows! She helped me make it. I’m not the best at working with cinnamon.” Eden stated.

“How do I know this isn’t poisoned?” Teruko asked. “Oh! Right…” Eden murmured, her expression souring. “Okay. I don’t blame you for being suspicious. Here: why don’t we share it?” She stated and reached over to grab two forks before handing one to Teruko and keeping one for herself. Teruko saw Eden’s determinated gaze. Teruko knew Eden wouldn't stop until she accepted her gift, so she might as well. She sighed.

“Fine.” She said begrudgingly before taking the fork. “But you have to go first.” She added. Eden smiled and giggled.

“Okay! I don’t mind.” She agreed before sticking the fork into the cinnamon roll and took a bite. Teruko then followed. Teruko seemed… content. Teruko would probably never admit it, but Eden made her feel relatively safe. But Teruko couldn’t trust anything, not even her own feelings. And, with Teruko’s luck, caring about Eden would only hurt both of them more than help.

“Thanks Eden.” Teruko said half-heartedly. “I have to go.” She stated before standing up and setting the fork down onto the plate with the hardly-eaten cinnamon roll. Eden frowned as Teruko left. Eden had failed her mission to make Teruko smile. But since when did Eden ever give up? She smiled with a new found determination. She’ll get her next time.

Teruko was minding her own business walking down a long hallway. She was just planning on going by the gym. She was typically trying to avoid people.

“Hey Teruko!” Eden called out suddenly as she appeared suddenly appeared beside Teruko. “Gah!” Teruko called out, slightly startled. “Tch- don’t sneak up on me like that.” Teruko scolded mildly. Eden giggled lightly. “Ah! My bad. I’ll be more careful next time.” Eden replied. Teruko sighed. “Well, do you need something?” Teruko murmured and put her hands on her hips. “I was hoping that you could come with me to a picnic!” Eden called out. “...What?” Teruko muttered in response. “You know, a picnic! In the relaxation room. It’s a really peaceful place. And we would really like you to be there.” Eden explained. “We…?” Teruko repeated and put a hand onto her chin. “Oh yeah- Whit, Hu, and Nico are there too.” Eden stated and put her hands behind her back, smiling. Teruko slightly grimaced. “I’ll pass.” Teruko mumbled before turning away from Eden. Eden seem startled by that answer.

“That’s okay Teruko, you don’t have to come with us. But you never know, you might have fun! And we need five people to play the games we brought! I’m sure you’ll love the games.” Eden tried to convince Teruko while also trying to keep Teruko’s attention. “And why was I your first option? Shouldn’t you go ask Rose, J, or Veronika. Hell, I bet even Ace would love that.” Teruko stated and began walking away, her voice sour. “But we really like your company, Teruko!” Eden called out, letting Teruko walk away. But then, just as Eden said those words, Teruko stopped in her tracks. Eden noticed this, and took the chance to speak. “You’re our friend, Teruko. We want to spend time with you and be nice to you. You… just have to let us.” Eden explained and smiled at Teruko. Teruko had her back to Eden, so she couldn’t see how Teruko was reacting. But she got an answer eventually. “...Fine.” Teruko said in a sigh. “I’ll go with you to this ‘picnic’. Just… Don’t take it the wrong way.” She stated and turned to look at Eden, whose face lit up with joy. “Yay!” Eden called out excitedly. “And if I even get a little uncomfortable then I’m going to leave without a second thought, alright?” Teruko added. “Of course! I’m not here to make you do anything. Now come on, Hu, Whit, and Nico are probably already there!” Eden said excitedly before reaching out and taking Teruko’s hand. This seemed to catch Teruko off guard. Eden’s hand was rather soft. She must’ve been moisturizing frequently or something.

Eventually, the two made it to the Relaxation Room. Eden slammed the door open, bursting in excitedly. “Hey! Sorry we’re late.” Eden said and happily waved. Whit, Hu, and Nico were both in the Relaxation Room, sitting on a white and red plaid blanket. There was a basket there as well, in it was a few sandwiches made, probably courtesy of Hu and Nico. There was also a stack of board games there as well.

“Heya.” Whit said and waved. “H-Hi.” Nico stuttered out and waved, though they were smiling.

“There is no need to apologize. We just finished setting up.” Hu stated. “Hi…” Teruko mumbled as she followed behind Eden as the two of them approached the rest of the group.

“Wow! So Eden actually was able to convince you to come?” Whit asked. “Tch… I guess.” Teruko said in response before sitting down with the rest of the group, as well as Eden. “N-Now that you’re both here, l-let’s play Uno!” Nico suggested excitedly as they reached over and placed the deck in front of the group.

“Oooo I love Uno!” Whit agreed. “Uno? Seriously? That’s ridiculous.” Teruko stated. “Hey, do you wanna deal the cards?” Eden asked and showed the deck to Teruko. Teruko paused.

“Sure.” She stated before taking the cards from Eden.

The group began to play the game. Nico was in first, being very good at the game. Teruko was a little competitive when it came to the game and was in second. Eden was in third, but just barely. Whit was in fourth only because Hu was letting him win. He had a lot of trouble focusing on a strategy for the game, and Hu decided to just let him stay ahead of her.

“Wow! You’re pretty good at this game, Teruko.” Eden commented. “This game is pretty simple.” Teruko stated, though she was indeed being quite a try-hard.

“Y-You just have to find a strategy.” Nico added. The group continued chatting. They were overall really enjoying this. Teruko had a face of determination as she played the game.

“One second, Teruko, can you play my turns for me for a second? I’m gonna go to the bathroom.” Eden stated and stood up, dusting herself off a bit.

“Sure.” Teruko agreed before taking Eden’s hand of cards. “Be right back!~” Eden said before she left. She then went to the door in which they had entered and left. This left Teruko alone with Nico, Hu, and Whit.

“You know, Teruko,” Hu began speaking, “We are very glad that you’re enjoying this. Eden was very set on making this comfortable for you.” She said as she placed a card into the pile.

“She… was?” Teruko replied, mildly confused.

“Yeah dude. Eden planned this whole thing for you. Did she not tell you?” Whit added. Teruko’s eyes went slightly wide as she furrowed her brow. “What?” She called out, clearly rather surprised.

“Y-Yeah, she did.” Nico added. “Hey, plus two.” They added before putting a plus two down, giving Teruko two more cards. “Indeed. Eden is very invested in making you feel cared for. It’s very sweet of her.” Hu said. “But– But why would she…?” Teruko searched for the right words but couldn’t find them. She didn’t get an answer, and soon Eden returned. “Hey! Did I miss anything?” Eden asked and entered the room again before plopping back down at the picnic blanket, getting her cards back.

“Not much.” Whit said with a shrug. Teruko was staring down blankly at her cards. “I need to leave.” She stated, putting the cards down before standing up. “Huh– Teruko! We just got here.” Eden said. She noticed how Teruko didn’t even look back at her before going to the exit and walking out. “One second.” Eden stated offhandedly to the group, her smile turning into a look of determination. She went after Teruko, following her out of the room.

Teruko didn’t really want to leave. She was just… so afraid of making bonds. Of caring for people only for them to leave her. She didn’t deserve their kindness at all. Once Teruko left the room, she didn’t actually walk away. She got a few steps away before feeling a voice in the back of her head tell her to turn back and go back to the group. But she didn’t. Teruko heard the door open behind her, and she quickly looked to see who it was. It was Eden.

“Teruko, you left so suddenly… Are you alright?” Eden asked.

“Why are you doing this?!” Teruko suddenly snapped and turned to face Eden. “...Huh?” Eden muttered in response. “Why are you trying so hard to be nice to me?” She questioned, now walking towards Eden. “I am not a good person. I don’t deserve your kindness. It’s that simple.” Teruko stated such things like they were facts that everyone knew.

“W-What?!” Eden replied, startled. “But of course you deserve kindness! You’re my friend. You haven’t done anything despicable. You deserve kindness just as much as I do. If anyone tells you any different, then they’re wrong.” She stated. Teruko was surprised by the amount of firmness that Eden had with her about this.

“...Stop it!” Teruko suddenly said and put her hands in her hair for a moment. “Just stop it!” She repeated. “I will never stop reaching out for you. I will never stop offering you my kindness. I promise.” Eden said firmly, though tears were in Eden’s eyes. Clearly Teruko yelling was making her very nervous. Once Eden learned how to not cry in intense situations it would be over for everyone.

Teruko and Eden shared a long, long gaze. “I don’t want to care about you just so that you can leave me.” She muttered. Eden sharply inhaled at such a tragic statement. She pulled Teruko into a hug. “Even if I’m not physically here. I’ll always be there for you. I’ll always be rooting for you. No matter where you are and no matter where I am.” Eden said, holding Teruko close. Teruko went slightly stiff as Eden hugged her.

“...Thanks, Eden.” Teruko muttered, her voice was quiet and trembling, and yet her voice was full of some kind of hope.

Eventually, the two separated.

“I apologize if I was being… uhm- Aggressive towards you. You really didn’t deserve that.” Teruko said and began playing with the hair in her ponytail a bit. “I guess that I… Have trouble accepting kindness.” Teruko began. And then she began to smile. It cracked at her lips. It wasn’t a grin, but it certainly was a real smile. She felt some kind of relief as she spoke to Eden. “I guess… I appreciate you not giving up on me.” She said, “And, you know, even though I wasn’t smiling, you really did make me happy.” She stated and looked Eden in the eyes. Eden’s expression slowly shifted. And she began to smile brightly.
