Bringing swag to Star Wars Celebration!

Star Wars Celebration has an awesome tradition of people making their own swag and trading it with one another. They make patches, pins, badges, stickers, trading cards.... Poker chips are the hippest new thing this edition! Some folks get even more creative and make keychains, bags, crayons... I’ve even seen someone who will be bringing some mugs, and remember the little girl that gave death star plans to people cosplaying Leia? She’ll be handing out dice to all the Han Solo’s this year! 

On Facebook you can join the Swag Crew to see what awesome stuff folks have made over the past months! There are over 2000 different pieces coming to Chicago! Swag is meant to be given freely, you can’t charge for it, but some folks will trade for it. (For example, a patch for a patch.) (If you consider that most patches costs like 3 dollars or so to make, you understand why folks don’t just hand them out to every random people they pass at the con.) 

Personally, I love Star Wars fanart, and I’ve commissioned a lot of awesome arts of @pandacapuccino over the past years - I’ll be bringing some prints with me to hand out! (With panda’s approval, of course!) Some of them are trading card sized, but I also have some postcard-sized. @nataly-leyton also drew me a lovely Reyux piece last week, and I really hope the mailman will be in time with delivering the art. (I’m afraid they’ll be late though... they said they would deliver it Wednesday or earlier, but I need it delivered earlier. It’s gonna be tight... *heavy breathing* Send good vibes so it arrives in time for me to bring it along!)

I have commissioned so much awesome fanart over the years that it was tough to select which pieces to print, but hopefully I’ll go to other SWC’s in the future where I can bring new arts to! 

At a certain point I even played with printing some nsfw Phux fanart panda drew me in the past, but then I thought “Let’s not get you kicked from the con for handing out nsfw Phux fanart. They’re probably going to find you weird enough as it is.” 

Many fans will be handing out trading cards that are also a way of telling people about their costuming groups, like the 501st or Rebel Legion or Mandolorean Mercs or such. I am not in a costume club, but would love to come out of the closet with fanfiction. Fans still don’t talk much about the fact they write it or read it. I wish to change that by handing out artworks that are inspired by AU’s and fanfiction. I hope that maybe in the future, more folks will follow my lead and hand out awesome artworks by some of the insanely talented fanartists we have in our fandom! (But always ask for permission first, of course!)

I would like to share the artworks here that I’ll be carrying on me. :-) And also sharing the links to the works that inspired them. 

This will be postcard-sized - inspired by the fic “Dreamers” (teen rating) - “When young Ben Solo dreams of a girl who is able to calm his anxious dreams, he does not believe her to be real - until she asks for his help. In order to find her, he will need his family's assistance. But are they ready for the truth that these two young Force-users will be able to unravel together?”

This will be trading card sized - inspired by “The Chase” (mature rating) - “Kylo wants Rey by his side. In order to achieve this, he will travel the galaxy, begging for her to join him. Rey isn't willing to forgive him so easily though.” 

This will be trading card sized - inspired by “The Only Exception” (mature but unfinished, unfortunately!) - a psychiatric ward AU where Kylo and Rey meet each other in the ward and become unlikely allies in their recovery. 

This will be trading card sized - inspired by “Breathe” - my current Reyux AU, mature rating -  “Hux finds Rey in the company of two corpses on the broken remains of the Supremacy: Snoke's and Kylo's. He would be a fool to fight her, and an even bigger fool if he didn't try to harness her powers for himself. With words as sweet as honey and a truce she can't refuse, he is able to lure her to his side. However, he soon realizes that she is untrained and traumatized by what she has been through. As the brand-new Supreme Leader of the First Order, he shouldn't bother with her, but his curiosity is hard to tame, and her kind nature kindles an affection he's never felt before.”

This will be postcard sized - also inspired by the fic mentioned above, “Breathe”. This amazing art is by nataly-leyton and not shared on Tumblr yet (until now!) It was too pretty to *not* bring along!

If you want some swag, I hope you run into me! I will give some swag to anyone who asks for it - but how much you get kind of depends on how much I got left for that day! And trading swag? Hell yeah! Bring on the trades. Feel free to send me private messages if you wanna meet up somewhere during SWC - I’ll just let you know when I’m at SWC where I am at a certain point and you could come and look for me and my swag then.

Sunday #12 - Life in the tag was pretty much dominated by more leaks and reviews of the Last Jedi novelization that’s coming pretty soon. There’s also some theorizing that one of the deleted scenes from the DVD could feature Kylo, and in the best case even Reylo. (Dare I dream for such a treat?)

But there are some great projects coming up for the community as well! Reylo week got announced! @reylo-week-2018 is the blog you’ll want to follow for that, and here’s the post where they posted the themes. Keep April 23d to 29th marked in your calendars! (Oh Gods I’ll be running overtime keeping the artblog and edits-blog up to date... It will be hell.) 

Not just that, but if you’re an artist, the @reylo-comic-anthology is collecting submissions before April 27th. Personally, when I read the announcement I really wanted to contribute as well - but I haven’t drawn in years and it’s so bad... it would be embarrassing - yet at the same time I really love group projects like that one.

If anyone has a project that they want to spotlight, like the reylo week or the anthology, let me know. I try to go through the Reylo tag as often as I can, but I don’t see 100 percent of what is posted. It might be that I miss things. If it’s for the entire community, just drop me a line and I’ll see if I can feature it in my weekly recap.

Following some previews from the book “hotshot”, we learn that baby Ben was already struggling with nightmares as a two-year-old. As if that isn’t heartbreaking enough, @jjsnrk drew beautiful Han/Kylo art inspired by it. 

@om-nom-berries wrote a beautiful Reylo comic a long while back, and it’s also something she now distributes online in a handy PDF - I totally suggest downloading it and reading it! I’ve also ordered her other little comic “Rey Days” and can’t wait for it to arrive sometime in the next two weeks. 

@kiddohah‘s art is gorgeous, and she drew a period piece of Rey and Kylo dancing in these beautiful outfits - totally worth checking out! 

@afterblossom has been drawing some AU-scenes from the Last Jedi - and they’re all pretty heartbreaking - for more angst, check out her latest here. 

I love me some good Kylo fanart - this week, my fav fanart is definitely by @biancasiercke - her use of colors is sublime and the strength and emotion it conveys is tugging at my heart. It’s so good!
