- feel like they both really need time to get comfortable with people but when they do, their bond becomes inseparable (X)

- also Umbreon and Espeon are counterparts of each other, both from the same gen, Kris and Jan being the guitarists of the band (yes that is the same thing in this case) and they're both so mysterious on their own way

Nace as Leafeon

"When you see Leafeon asleep in a patch of sunshine, you’ll know it is using photosynthesis to produce clean air."

- photosynthesis as a metaphor that he's capable (and essential) to help his friends when they're in need (Bojan's panic attack)

Poke Moms

There are, according to the Pokemon wiki Bulbapedia, eleven characters in the Pokemon universe expressed across multiple games who all have the exact same name. If you include a regional variant of the name, you get that number up to twelve.

That name is ‘Mom.’

Or Mum, in Galar

The player character’s mother is usually, but not always, called ‘Mom’, by the game, and doesn’t offer you any kind of way to dig into her full name. This is perfectly reasonable as a way to handle a character in the game who the player will interact with momentarily, but also serves some utility in the space. Note that not all the player characters’ mothers are named Mom, since there’s Grace from X and Y, and Johanna, from Diamond and Pearl. And Platinum I suppose, thank you for the clarification Fox.

Mom (Hey You, Pikachu!)

Now, you may make the mistake I made, but this isn’t Let’s Go, Pikachu‘s mom, this is the mom from the N64 social game, Hey You, Pikachu. That game was for showing off the N64’s microphone that let you speak directly to the Pikachu. Like, with your voice!

In a game where the primary point of the game was wandering around away from home, talking to your Pikachu it stands to reason that you weren’t going to bother developing your home-staying Mom-type a lot, and that’s why she’s down here at the bottom. Fundamentally she just says some stuff to set up the game and moves you on to the next stage of things. Still, she gets special credit for her extremely 1960s Space Girl hair.

Mom (Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Now this is the Let’s Go Pikachu version. She’s the same basic character as Pokemon Red & Blue’s Mom, and has the same paucity of material. No distaste, no dislike, but because she’s just filling in space and that game was stripped down from the generations of game around it, she isn’t much of anything.

Mom (Hoenn)

While on the one hand, Hoenn Mom gives one of the most valuable things in the history of the game (running shoes), Hoenn Mom is also somewhat underdeveloped. Also, it says something about the kind of game that her husband, Norman, gets a name, and he’s not just Dad, but your Mom doesn’t get one. Real feminism L in the Hoenn region.

(And you can complain he gets that because he’s a Gym Leader, but surely your Mom’s job is Mom.)

Mom (Johto)

The mother of Ethan, Kris, and no, wait, I’ve been informed that it’s actually Lyra now. I have to assume that means Ethan transitioned or something. She’s the mother from Pokemon Gold, Silver, their heart-and-soul remakes, and Crystal. This mom is a perfectly nice lady, and one of the first examples of a Mom With A Life. If you won matches in these games, Mom might spend some time at the store using some of the money you sent home, and blow that money on cool things. She was also a convenience option – you could trust her with some of your money after each match, and she’d spend that on treats for you, but also that money she was holding, you couldn’t lose in Pokemon battles.

In the Pokemon Adventures manga, though, this Mom gets something else to do – she kinda runs a day-care centre in her house for Pokemon. This also gives her a different visual representation that has a slightly better version of this hair style.

Mom (Black 2 and White 2)

We’re ranking from the least-best to best-best, but that means that unfortunately, the Black 2 and White 2 mom has to be enter a competition where she’s standing alongside her much cuter Black and White alternative.

Still, she is a Mom with something super interesting to her, at least if you follow the manga in Pokemon Adventures; this Mom is a former Team Plasma Grunt! She even got a narrative explaining why she became a member of Team Plasma: She was radicalised from her time working in a PokeCentre, and seeing all the ways that Pokemon got hurt thanks to human intervention drove her to a project of mass divestment in human-Pokemon relationships.

Which.

That seems a bit of a jump.

What’s even wilder is she stepped back from that and just became a suburbanite mom.

Mom (Black and White)

While Mom in Black and White is not nearly as deeply explained, with a backstory, she didn’t join the war on pet neglect on the side of neglect, so I’m a little more inclined to like her.

Mom (Alola)

Formerly of Kanto, Mom (Alola Forme) is a character with a quiet tragedy to her. As a newcomer to the islands of Alola, she spends time integrating and trying to learn the culture. You get to see her partaking in things like celebrations and going to the store, and she is mindful of not just you, her child, but also the children in your orbit. Also, she never got to go on a Pokemon Adventure like you do, and she wants to.

Now I know this isn’t a lot, but it’s more than some of these ladies have! And she has her own special battle with her own special Meowth! That’s not no effort!

There’s an unfairness to all of this, of course. After all, all the most recent games have had more storage, more room for mechanical information and more people working on a wider product capable of more stuff and that means that any given Mom is going to have more opportunities to do more stuff, and therefore, the best Moms are going to be the ones from the later entries in the game franchise, right? Isn’t that being unfair and biasing the tier list towards the later-entry moms?

Mom (Kanto)

Anyway, let’s go back to the start.

In Red and Blue and Yellow, you get your first Mom. She was a utility point — she’d heal your Pokemon if you showed up in her town, because Pallet Town lacked a PokeCentre. Beyond that, she shooed you on to your first Pokemon encounter, meeting Professor Oak, and all that jazz.

On the one hand, she ranks very low; the character isn’t very important, she doesn’t do much and she isn’t very cute (though of course, they’re all perfectly cute). Left alone, she would be at the bottom of the list. But, this character is the model for Delia Ketchum, who exists thanks to being the third translation of this character, and is vital to the Hanamusa ship, about which I’ve already written.

Mom (Paldea)

In Scarlet and Violet we’re introduced to this Mom. She does things I think are really good – she leaves the house, she goes on little trips and she meets up with you. She even teaches you how to cook, and you may think, hey, hey, hang on, no she doesn’t, teaching you how to make sandwiches counts.

‘Oh Sandwiches aren’t cooking,’ listen to you. You fool. You buffoon. Is it sustenance? Is it your mother giving you instruction on how to safely navigate both feeding yourself and reproduction? Then it is cooking! She has taught you an invaluable lesson about how to make a sandwich and in the process, also frees you from the tyranny of the daycare system for breeding.

Mom here had a chance at the crown but the problem is, in the English translation, she’s a Galar expat, so a Mum, but she has assimilated into this other culture and is using the intolerable Americanism Mom.

Mum (Galar)

Finally, we have the best one because she’s a Mum, not a Moawom.

Now, you might look at this lineup and ask yourself: Hey, isn’t this just mostly you choosing which moms are the hottest or easiest to make jokes about?’ And I would respond to that with:

SPEAKING OF POKEMON!!! (Grinning)

So Lyra’s first pokemon was NOT Roar the Cyndaquil like most other protagonists. Her first pokemon was actually Ombre the Eevee, a gift from Bill on her 14th birthday (he did the same for Kris). Ombre was her only other friend growing up outside of Ethan. She’s a bit more rambunctious, jolly even, than other Espeon you’d know, and often jumps on Lyra when she wants to play. But she’s also very protective of Lyra, probably the most protective of her team.

Roar the Cyndaquil, whom was a gift from Elm, on the other hand was very shy and quiet… he often hid behind her leg and even got scared of Ombre initially. He’s grown out of his shell but even now he’s just a bit timid.

The first pokemon she properly caught was Rocky the Phanpy, whom was kind of caught on accident? She stepped on her foot the wrong way, took a spill, and Rocky was kind of in the way. She accidentally got hit by a pokeball. It was on pure accident but neither parties seemed to mind, Rocky especially was pretty relaxed about it. And it didn’t take long for her to start wanting to carry Lyra around on her back.

Sprout the Hoppip was next, whom also kind of . Attached herself to her. One day she just kind of saw a flock of these passing by her eye and one landed on her hat. She’s probably the most docile of her pokemon. More often than not Lyra’s often sent running after her because she gets picked up by the wind and doesn’t really fight against if. But despite this she’s such a sweetie

Flan the Mareep was caught sort of because he was a dream pokemon for her. When Lyra set out on her journey to find herself she knew she wanted a Mareep since the very beginning. She saw one him . Just . Like. Collapsed into his fur, petting and cooing over him and everything. And Flan was the only one she set out on her journey to catch. Flan’s a bit of a brat, a bit sassy, is picky with his food, and especially starts (play) fights with Ombre. But just because he’s the smuggest sheep around doesn’t mean he isn’t just as protective of his teammates.

Drizzle the Wooper was a bit of a pest initially actually. Like Sprout, she too kind of latched herself onto Lyra. But like Lyra never really realized she was attached to her until later on down the line when she finds Sprout eating her food. Lyra thought it was really cute though, cooing over her and just giving her more food even though Drizzle was . Already stealing hers. Despite being a bit empty headed though, as most of her kind is, Drizzle is quite naughty. Often getting her head stuck in boxes and splashing Lyra with water. Although it’s never malicious. She’s just a bad Wooper. She’s also best friends with Rocky.

Datamine today, but other than OG Valerie getting an EX at Pokemas day, I dunno if there's anything else you're interested in.

There's SS Piers and SS Roxie, Ryuki is finally scoutable. For Eevee day, there's Penny, Eevee Kid NPC from Galar, and Elaine. Variety Eevee is getting a rerun alongside new Eevee variety units of Elio and Selene, High Score Fire event is gonna be at November. The banner for high score is SS Morty and SS May.

Eevee eggmons are interesting, they all have the field effect corresponding to their types, but I think they're all tech. Which means F2P Dark Zone and Ice Zone.

Grid expansion is OG Leaf, Champion Iris, and OG Grimsley. OG Leaf can finally buff crit with her trainer move! But I haven't looked at the other two. There's also SS Diantha and Anabel rerun.

There's also a new type of banner called Mix scout. It's described in the producer letter as a banner that can carry over the scout points but only with paid gems.

Lastly, Kalos VA is getting a rerun, there'll be upcoming chapter about the mysterious stone. Pokemas day's master fair rerun is Champion Serena, buddy moves got their names revised.

Yeah it’s kind of a bummer of a month overall, but I’m not too upset by it. Roxie kinda rules, that kit is great and I kinda want it for Eevee Kris purposes. Penny I haven’t looked over but I’m definitely getting her because Paldea fan. The Valerie EX is my everything. Leaf got Crit Squad so it’s over. Champion Iris kinda got supremely fucked over, this is a terrible expansion. Glad they slightly buffed Grimsley but not enough to make him matter.

The Eevee eggs sound cool but only if Tech. Support eggmon with field effect is Bad. Selene and Elio finally got alts but this sure didn’t work in my favor, hoping for a better Espeon down the line. Elaine…kinda infuriated me. I hate Let’s Go, I think it’s the worst game by functionality, just absolutely miserable to experience, and wanted it to get nothing. Now that door’s open, so fuck me I guess. Couldn’t just stick with the good modern games, we had to backpedal into crap. Wonderful. Watch the kit be good so I’ll feel compelled to pull.

But nowhere near as mad as Mix Scout. Oh, paid gems but you can only pull a limited number of times? So we might not even hit pity unless we were pulling ahead of time. Wretched mechanic. I hope whoever made this dies one thousand deaths. And they had the fucking audacity to make it a Red alt. Disgusting.

Still reading up. More thoughts eventually. But yeah this month is super disappointing to me. Hopefully we’re back on Hisui next month.

DR POKÉMON TEAMS

Kris!

1. Honedge/Aegislash: This is a reference to Kris's love of blades, and their knightly form in Dark Worlds. It is also a reference to their father's team in an alternate universe, and the Honedge that Chara has in Pokémon Undertale. I like to think it changes forms between worlds, becoming stronger and fully evolved in Dark Worlds so it's shield can be used to protect Kris and the people they care about.

2. Espeon☆/Umbreon☆: This Pokémon changes form depending on which world it's in at the time. It is a reference to Frisk's Eevee and to Kris's neutral-looking face. Its green colouration as shiny Espeon matches Kris in the Light World. The blue in shiny Umbreon matches their Dark World form. A lot of people consider Espeon's shiny to be ugly or weird; it resembles an alien, much in the way monsters in Hometown tend to think Kris is a freak, and how they stand out as the only Human. While Espeon is associated with sunlight and the day time, Umbreon is associated with moonlight and the night time.

3. Ralts: The same gender-neutral Pokémon shared by Chara and Frisk that can change into two different forms. For Kris, I imagine it evolves into a Gallade to reference Kris's knight-like appearance in the Dark World. As Gallade, this Pokémon fights fiercely to protect people it cares about. It would probably be one of Kris's most-used Pokémon, and would probably stay outside of its Pokéball in the Dark World to assist Kris with protecting their friends. I also like to think Gallade would look like its shiny form in the Dark World, since Gallade's shiny is blue...like Kris.

4. Applin/Flapple: A reference not only to Kris's apple-scented shampoo, but also their affinity for pie...which they apparently eat entirely in one sitting...It's a good thing Kris's childhood Applin didn't evolve into an Appletun! I think Kris was probably disappointed by that, though. Don't eat your Pokémon, Kris!! Applin's Dark World evolution, Flapple, is part dragon type, a nod to the typical "knight and dragon" dynamic. Kris is the knight, and Flapple is the dragon!

5. Gengar: A reference to Chara's Gastly, this Pokémon is associated with mischief, pranks, and hiding in the shadows. It likes to hide in dark places, and is sometimes said to be able to travel to other worlds or come from another world. It is also said to come out at night to "steal the lives of those who become lost in the mountains". It also has red eyes like Kris.

6. Alakazam: This Pokémon is not only a reference to Frisk's Abra and the need for sleep (which Kris apparently does in class quite often, accoding to Alphys), this is also a call-back to Kris researching the occult with Catti and being seemingly interested in the concept of performing magic (given their online search history), possibly in the hopes of becoming more monster-like such as the rest of their family.

As for Kris's Legendary and Mythical...let's complete what we've got going with Susie and Ralsei!

Kyogre: Kyogre is one of three ancient Pokémon, one that I imagine would be part of the Pokémon Deltarune's prophecy of the Three Heroes. It's blue like Kris and works in opposition to Susie's Groudon, but can also work with it to bring balance rather than destruction. Kyogre's water typing can reference fountains, roaring, and a sea of darkness splitting the earth and enveloping the world. It is said to sleep at the bottom of the sea.

Deoxys: This Pokémon is humanoid and comes from outer space. Its alien theming goes with Kris's Espeon, but also touches on Kris's alienation from the Monsters of Hometown (being the only Human we know of who lives there). Deoxys' ability to change forms could reference Kris's SOUL changing forms in various chapters. The stone in Deoxys' chest, which is what controls its whole body, could reference the Human SOUL in Kris's chest that controls them.

ok heres my hot take on wrestler-pokemon teams... for the best friends.

there are 1,012 pokemon that exist nowadays so the sky is the limit and you can choose whatever fits your agenda. which is what i did. i picked pokemon that fit my agenda. if you dont like my agenda thats fine. you should tell people your personal pokemon agenda by forming teams of your own.

i think its important that neither chuck nor trent have "competitive" teams with optimal pokemon, but they probably have moves/items/very specific gimmick setups that could catch someone off guard (akin to the legendary world champion pachirisu moment).

swadloon is cute and grumpy (and im biased because its one of my favorites). karrablast looks like it'd run around yelling "murder" but also karrablasts have a unique evolution dynamic with shelmets which i gave to trent. its important that i dont think they would ever trade those two, ever. i also dont think they'd even know they'd evolve from it. crobat evolves from high friendship with a golbat which is so cute especially because its such a mean lookin' thing. lillipup is just walter straight up. heracross is a friendly fighting bug, i didnt really have much heart in this choice (now that i think about it, i would swap it out with something more reminiscent of swamp monster maybe) pignite is self explanatory, but also i needed/wanted to give him a starter pokemon and not just a whole bunch of small cute weak things.

trent:

shelmet, see above. raboot is just a cool and chill looking pokemon that looks like it exercises a lot, without being one of the more obvious workout pokemon types like machamp or w/e. then we have three dogs (boltund, arcanine, granbull) because he loves dogs. the idea of trent also just having a basic ass diglett makes me laugh. no deep explanation there. he just inexplicably has a diglett

orange:

i think 100% that orange has an espurr that is constantly just staring and creeping everyone out so they give it a pair of sunglasses to wear so they wouldn't see that. dunsparce is just because i think itd be funny if he had a tsuchinoko. emolga would be something he's had since the fire ant days. gloom because it looks like that. marshadow wouldnt specifically belong to him so much as it would be this legendary mythical pokemon that hides in his shadow that people rarely ever see (but i also think marshadows' thing with their fighting spirit matches with orange's temperment). i begrudgingly added snorlax, which seems like too much of an obvious choice. maybe a komala would work too. whatever. maybe infernape would work for orange too, but i have a personal bias against infernape. i do think he could use some sort of trickster jokester pokemon, maybe i'd replace dunsparce with one of those...

kris:

most of these were recommended/suggested to me and i agreed with them. two aliens because of course, but also: i still miss the alien gimmick. a luxio because last we saw her she had blue in her hair. a ponyta because its cool and tough and cute. vaporeons rule. and i really like the new farigiraf from the latest pokemon.

i also think the entire stable should also share custody over a shroomish, just because i think itd be funny:

How I interpret the core series multiverse

Something I've been thinking over since, around the BDSP/PLA release cycle, is how many timelines exist in the Pokemon multiverse? Well, I think I've come up with about six different timelines, including the timeline Masters takes place in. If you'll all indulge me for a moment or two, I'll lay out the multiverse as I see it:

Nothing more complicated here than putting the third versions together, because, let's face it, these WERE the canon versions back in the day! I want to make particular note of Platinum, as I believe Cyrus's actions at the Spear Pillar not only created two entirely different universes, but completely rewrote their histories, given that Dialga's power over time includes future AND past.

Being the Palkia-influenced universe, you'll find several connections to Palkia's Water-typing, mainly in Kyogre, Lugia, and Lunala. Aside from that, these are mostly the opposite versions to the Diamond timeline. Once again, Scarlet is constant between the two, which of course I'll explain.

These games are largely alternate universes to the Diamond timeline, some of which haven't even been announced yet, so I guess I have to explain that.

As Mega Evolution was originally stated to be recently discovered in Kalos, that flies in the face of Let's Go Pikachu and Omega Ruby, which prominently feature Mega Evolution prior to the Kalos games, so I grouped them into a timeline together. Speaking of Let's Go, we can safely assume a version of the Johto story occurs three years after that.

Brilliant Diamond is grouped here mostly for its inclusion of the Fairy-type, but I'm willing to bet that when Unova gets remade, Cynthia will reference Dialga in Black, but Palkia in White. And Kalos remakes will most likely retconning the Fairy-type as a long-known commodity.

Ultra Sun is explicitly an alternate Sun, and is the whole reason this and the Alpha timeline are a thing in the first place.

The reason I put Scarlet in both the Diamond and Pearl timelines is because of the possibility that AI Sada travelling to the ancient past causing a butterfly effect that would cause Violet's events to play out instead of Scarlet's.

I won't bore you all by repeating the same logic behind the Omega timeline, just swap out the opposite versions other than Scarlet.

Masters is somewhat less rigid with its timeline than the ones I've pieced together, but at least there's no need to fret over a Kanto title. Still, I'm going with FireRed just because Red picked Charmander.

I put SoulSilver AND Crystal, not because I believe they're both canon, but because Kris exists, and so I'm assigning her the Suicune sidequest. As for SoulSilver over HeartGold, Ethan seems to have caught Lugia, but not Ho-oh, so I think that settles that.

Similarly, I'm inclined to count Omega Ruby as the canon game because Steven's mindscape features the Groudon mural, and also Brendan as Norman's son has Latios, which would only be the case in Omega Ruby. However, I believe the Masters Hoenn story follows Emerald more closely, as if you look at the team admins' mindscapes, then Tabitha's is the mouth of Mt. Chimney, and Matt's is the remodeled submarine, both roles that Emerald assigned the two teams.

Platinum is explicitly canon to Masters, as Cheryl namedrops the Distortion World, with Cyrus even having both dragons before Dialga abandons him for Lucas.

Hilbert, portrayed as the canon BW1 protagonist, has his base unit's sync move as "The True Razor Shell," and N comes into the game with Zekrom as his base pair, so Black is almost certainly the canon version. Also, Nate recognizes Black Kyurem when Ghetsis tries to make Kyurem absorb Zekrom, so Black 2 almost certainly happened.

There are effectively zero indications of X or Y being the canon version. Lysandre doesn't even count since he wasn't believed to have survived Geosenge Town! That being said, most of Calem and Serena's Pokemon use the Dex entries from X, so until one version or another is confirmed, I'm rolling with X solely on that.

The Ultra games were confirmed since launch, but until Nebby makes an appearance, we won't know for sure whether it's Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon.

Gloria has Zacian, Hop has Zamazenta. Sword is canon, case closed.

Scarlet seems to be canon, based on Nemona wearing the Naranja Academy uniform, but I'd like to see the protags and Arven get added first before making a judgement call. Hoopa shenanigans, and all that.

So out of the natural infinity of multiverse theory, there are at least six timelines in the Pokemon core series multiverse. I mean, technically, there are ten bad timelines where the villains actually win, but those don't make for good worldbuilding (or, multiverse building. Building a multiverse, doesn't get nerdier than that...).

Suzu is Lyra and Silver’s only child, but is very close with her cousin, Quincy, considering her to be an older sister of sorts. She’s also very close with the Goldman boys, Logan and Noah. She travels with both of them, and Quincy sometimes accompanies them as a chaperone.
