Week 5 | Mediating Performance

What is mediating performance?

Mediating Performance? Through the use of skilled communication and negotiation strategies, an unbiased third party helps disputing parties resolve conflict through the structured, interactive process of mediation. This is what it means by mediation. 

-Reflection-

Taking into context the aspect of performance, my interpretation on what mediating performance means is the execution of a performance that involves multiple parties working together at the same time. Working in a team of people in a professional or official manner, communication between the parties involved plays an important role in order for the performance to be a success. Hence, mediation is needed here.

A sample work from Sir Fauzi’s previous work; Satu Hari: Penang, is shown during this week’s lecture, to give us an idea on how these kinds of performances are done; from planning to executing the performance, when working together with a professional team.

In week 5, the topic that was talked about was regarding mediating performance. Today we will looked back and see the show and how the process about mediating performance.

Here are my few recaps and interpretation.

W5 Lecture - MEDIATING PERFORMANCE

Mediating Performance

This week was a short lecture. We learned the definition of mediating performance and also got to see Sir Fauzi's own works called Satu Hari: Penang, showing the behind-the-scenes of what goes on and the process for such performances.

Definition of Mediation:

A structured, interactive process.

An impartial third party assists disputing parties in resolving conflict.

This is done through the use of specialized communication and negotiation techniques.

Collaborative work.

An artistic audio visual poetry of George Town.

It is in conjunction with DA+C Festival 2011.

A visual mapping for Suffolk House: bustling street scenes, traditional trades and heritage architecture within George Town.

The energy of the tradition burst onto Suffolk House facade to conjure a sense of familiarity yet with a new spin.

Traditional music inspired beats are juxtaposed with image composite of the old and new to create an unmistakably Penang flavour.

I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of creating these types of performances and the thought processes involved. Delving into the behind-the-scenes aspects was both enlightening and enjoyable as we get to see how the polished final version came to be. Understanding how individual shots are meticulously edited and integrated into these performances shed light on the craftsmanship behind them. the level which I aspire to achieve in my works.

Week 3 | Scene

The topic of our lecture this week is about “scenes”. The material shared to understand this topic better is Sir Fauzi’s past commissioned work, an experimental video about the Thaipusam ceremony in Batu Caves.

My Thoughts? While the celebration is known for its colorful presence, the overall video output is in black and white. The narrative of the shots in this video seems to emphasize on the emotions of the people celebrating Thaipusam, as seen with the lack of dialogues and hues which allows viewers to concentrate fully on these elements. Without oversaturation or a mix of too many colors, us viewers are able to focus on the other details that were being portrayed throughout the video, and get a grasp on the established mood and sentiments. Composition wise, the people are the main subject matter. Not to forget the emotions that make up the atmosphere being portrayed, establishing the initial mood. I believe that these scenes succeed in capturing the raw feelings and emotions of the people praying during the celebration in a simple yet sophisticated manner. Implementing the use of audio and sound effects to bring the shots to life plays a crucial role as the use of proper audio will affect the storytelling of the clips and scenes. I can simplify that in order to get a scene that captivates people, one must consider various details especially during post-production. Color grading and lighting, scene composition and visuals, sound effects, music and audio are the key elements that you will need to keep in mind at all times.

W3 Lecture - MEDIA COMMUNICATION 3

Media Communication 3 - Scene

The topic for week 3 is about scenes, with a particular focus on Sir Fauzi's past works in relation to it. We were introduced to this concept through his experience rather than given a theoretical explanation.

The featured work is Thaipusam (2011) by EFOZY, where he was commissioned by the British Council Arts Malaysia to shoot an experimental video about Thaipusam ceremony in Batu Caves.

The creative direction was to focus on the emotion of the prayers

This A/V clips had been screening in various international festivals

gained popularity for its uniqueness of style

possible the only black & white video of the colorful Thaipusam during that era

The main reflection I got after diving into Sir Fauzi's Thaipusam work was the contrast between the vibrant use of color seen during the festival and his artistic choice of purposely creating a black and white video. This enhanced the emotions of the people seen in the video and showed more vulnerability of the prayers, in my opinion. The absence of color allows for a heightened focus on the interplay of light and shadow, emphasizing the contours of faces and the subtleties of expression, thus again, the focus shifts entirely onto the raw emotions and spiritual connection of the people.

Kick off to the New Year 2022. Glad to be back to Multimedia University (MMU), this time as a part time lecturer and this remarked my 5th university since I’ve joined the education fields in 2016.
