"Varkari can refer to an individual or group who undertakes a pilgrimage to the temple of Lord Vithoba or Vitthala in the town of Pandharpur in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Lord Vithoba himself, and the pilgrimage to Pandharpur can, in many respects, be considered the most important, popular deity and pilgrimage in Maharashtra. Indeed, in some manner, the pilgrimage itself defines the idea of Maharashtra as a distinct region as pilgrim processions from the different cities and towns converge on this sacred center."

A few days back, 10 indebted farmers from Hingoli district in Maharashtra made a unique but strange plea to the Chief Minister. They were willing to put their body organs to auction so as to pay back loans to the nationalised banks from the money so raised. They offered to sell their body organs, and in fact had a 'rate card' ready - Rs 90,000 for liver, Rs 75,000 for a kidney and Rs 25,000 for an eye. While this strange offer did create a ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly, it was all forgotten after a few days. The tragedy being that anything that depicts agrarian distress is brushed away rather easily.

To desire something deeply is to will it, and to will is to achieve. If they want to become a great artist, build a bigger pyramid, explain the movements of the planets, they devote their life to that, and usually succeed. Wherever you find great success in life, it is fueled by the intense unification of desires.

But the most successful people of all are the rare men and women like Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Teresa of Avila who have but one desire. All lesser desires have been consumed in the great fire of love for God.
