Welcome to The Aureum
Tumblr media
Hi! I'm a newer software dev, but with a long history with programming (thanks to this accursed site in 2014 and my desire to join robotics) I also happen to love writing and art, and have a lot of OCs. I always struggled with keeping them organized and finding a software that works for me.
Enter, The Aureum!
What is The Aureum?
The Aureum is a work in progress web based app made with electron that I am working on so that I can organize my characters in a bit of a different way. A lot of elements and planned features take inspiration from the fandom community wiki, mixed with some of my other favorite world building websites that just ended up not being a good fit for me.
I made this blog so I can easily keep track of my development progress on this, and maybe make some cool new friends in the process.
What does it do?
Currently? Very little, other than make characters with information.
However, I'm currently working on a number of features, one of my most ideal features being project organization. This would allow me (and other users ofc) to sort their OCs and locations BY the project. Maybe you're a writer working on a few different series/stories at the same time, and you need some way to seperate them. Maybe your a game dev, visual novel creator, etc and you just want to have some way to store all of your story and character information in one place.
I also have some more fun and 'unique' features that are being worked on, like an automatic reference sheet generator, which prints out some of your characters information like name, age, height, weight, body type, and some of your preselected colors.
Another favorite feature I'm working on are the personality sliders! In the characters page there are sliders that you can edit to have a little more of a 'fun' view of how your characters act. Here are some screenshots of the layout from within Figma!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Currently, I'm setting up the data storage structure so that we can input all of this character information and still be able to create a project after to put the character in. But while I'm still working out the kinks, here's a list of the main planned features that will be implemented before i send it out to friends to alpha test!
Features
Multiple Projects/ Worlds
Entirely locally hosted, no internet connection required
Personality sliders
Character sheet generator
Timeline feature per project/world
Ability to link to sources and citations
Relationship linking between characters (Similar to fandom wiki setups)
The Aurei - The golden ones, your favorite OC's flagged so that you can access them faster, especially if you have favorites from multiple projects.
Random generation features, for things like art prompts and writing prompts.
Ideas for future releases
D20, d6, etc dice roller
Fake social media screenshot generator similar to twinote or photonote
Additional timeline just on a character by character basis
Ability to sort OCs by tag - by gender, species, location, etc.
Dark mode (maybe custom color palettes for later that users can upload/customize via css)
and more!
Okay but when will it be done?
Truthfully, who knows? I'm solo deving this software for fun, while working a full time job on top of my normal small game projects I make. It might be functional in a few months, or it might take a few years. Ultimately, I have no timeline for this project, and I want to be up front right out of the gate. Once i get a stablle build with the main character and project features implemented and organized, I'll send it off to friends to alpha test, and if all goes well for a few weeks, then I'll post the alpha build for others to use.
Why are you doing this?
the short answer is just because i want to. The longer answer is because, while I love using things like notion, obsidian, metos, worldanvil, etc. I find that there's always one or two things missing from each of them that I'd personally like to have. A lot of these softwares/websites are created with specific things in mind, like note taking, etc. But for me, I make games, i do art, i write stories, and I'm a DND Dungeon Master, so not all of those softwares will work for my every project.
I wanted to make something that would work for everyone, for all of their creative needs.
Also a mini note, to anyone who comes back and sees this or is curious, this project *will* be free on release to the public and likely hosted on itch.io. There are currently NO plans for an online sync or any only features, as that is not within my devstack or technical abilities at this time.

Node package Manager
Native to nodejs installation is npm itself. Its is very robust and get's the job done. But there is a better option. I would not say limitations of native npm is overcome by pnpm and its predecessor yarn. There are added features to npm and not necessarily limitations. I was using yarn until last month when I run into a codebase the was configured with pnpm. I have since used it for any project I have developed. To install pnpm you can visit their documentation, my prefered way is to use powershell or chocolately. Now chocolately or choco is an option when installing nodejs, if you did not install it then use the powershell command.
Visit pnpm and install using your preferred method.
Powershell command - Invoke-WebRequest https://get.pnpm.io/install.ps1 -UseBasicParsing | Invoke-Expression
Chocolately command - choco install pnpm
If you have to install a package manager then get chocolately or sccop. These will allow you to run an upgrade command when there is an update

Design Breakdown
I think the simplest breakdown of the design is three panels: nav panel, main panel & support panel. Each panel will be its own Vue component and an item in a flex container.
The nav panel will house the the main navigation. For the most part, it’ll be static except for adding/removing pinned boards. The support panel will be mainly for any kind of quick edit functions. The main panel will be well, the main panel. It’ll contain the image collection, the board collection, the image detail views and board collection.

The npm advantage
As a developer you need all the api's that are available so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. There is no point in that, npm allows you to reuse code that someone has made into a lib-utility. I call it a lib utility because it's normally a full set of programming api that enables you to achieve a purpose by making you harness the source code that actually makes your life easy. Infact under the hood react itself is a lib-utility but it's seen as a framework altogether. Most JavaScript frameworks leverage the npm system or reusing code. Frameworks like react, svelte, angular, vue.js, solidJS and quik.
Building cross-platform Apps with Electron and React
Above are most frameworks that are mainstream, I did not include nextjs, nuxtjs and preact because are a subset of mainstream frameworks. React was made as a single page application to solve a problem of server roundtrips which had performance issues. In the same way Electron was developed so that web developers that sometimes get a one of desktop application project don't have to go learn another programming language.
Npm package managers
There used to be a package manager called npm which was the native package manager and its very good. Since everyone is on the mission to solve problem, there has been an introduction of yarn and pnpm which is the latest. Pnpm came out in 2022 and its awesome, I will not go into the improvements made in yarn and pnpm but I will say node package manager(npm) is the tooling you need to use to install all you npm into your projects. After you install NodeJS, the base tool you need to develop JavaScript, It has prebuilt api's that allows you to access the filesystem, scientific and arithmetic base and console tools. These modules will be added by default in any node project along with the ones you would like to use.

Beast 0.12.0-beta.1
Long time no see.
It's been a while since the last #Beast release, mainly because we have a lot of code migrations going on, some of which caused severe regressions. Here are the tarball and Debian package:
https://beast.testbit.org/pub/testing/beast-0.12.0-beta.1.tar.xz
https://beast.testbit.org/pub/deb/beast_0.12.0~beta.1+20.gac2f0b3_amd64.deb
At this point, we hope the code is reasonably stabelized so we can produce a final 0.12.0. The beta.1 release is here for people to poke into an prove us wrong. So please give the tarball or pre-built Debian package a shot and file any regressions in the issue tracker: https://github.com/tim-janik/beast/issues/
This release removes the #Rapicorn dependency as well as the runtime dependency on CPython. To achieve that, a number of utilities from Rapicorn had to be integrated, which has made the code base a fair bit larger:
639 files changed, 75204 insertions(+), 44290 deletions(-)
Most notably, this is the first release that installs the new ebeast UI. Tracks, piano rolls and dB meters are already displayed, but not much beyond that as it's still in pre-alpha stage. However it's a good showcase for our future UI direction, you can start it and take a quick look with:
/opt/beast-0-12/bin/ebeast # replace '/opt' with your build prefix
Beast 0.12.0-beta.1
* EBEAST: development of a new user interface based on Electronjs has
started and the first (pre-alpha) bits are shipped and installed
with this release under $prefix/beast-0-12/bin/ebeast.
* EBEAST: added About, Tracks with dB meters, Parts with thumbnails.
* EBEAST: added Play controls, Piano roll, color picker palette.
* Upgrade to Electron-1.8, Vue-2.5, Chrome-59.0, V8-5.9, Node-8.2.
* Added internal integrity tests.
* Added various documentation improvements.
* Fixed memory corruption crash, #25. [stw]
* Fixed FluidSynth test on Bionic, #42. [stw]
* Fixed crash when adding mixer bus during playback. [stw]
* Merged and enhanced the new Beast IDL layer AIDA.
* Introduced asynchronous Events to replace signals.
* Removed all C procedures, migrated method calls to Aida IDL.
* Removed large chunks of old and outdated code.
* Integrated required utilities from Rapicorn.
* Removed Rapicorn as build and runtime dependency.
* Removed Python runtime dependency.
* Work around apport reporting assertion tests.
* Handle UTF-8 mixed with Latin-1 gracefully.
* Renamed Demos/, Effects/, etc resource directories.
* Added shared memory allocator with external bookkeeping (without
boundary tags). Communicate dB meter levels and other values via
shared memory between DSP engine and UI code.
* Continued migration of C structs to C++ classes.
* Adjusted remote reference GC for Beast work loads.
* Added ANSI colors to logging output for non-dumb terminals.
* Reduced libbse.so size down to 14% by splitting debug syms.
* Clarified licensing, Beast is released under LGPL-2.1+.
* Adapted code to depend on and make use of C++14.
* Fixed code to compile cleanly with g++-7.2.

Dull Grey emotional story due to unfold onto Linux
Tumblr media
Dull Grey visual novel game about growing up is due to get a port for Linux with Windows PC. Thanks to details from developer Provodnik Games. Having just released on Steam. Provodnik Games have released its interactive drama Dull Grey on Windows PC. Which is an award winning visual novel about growing up. This can now take on a whole new audience of story game fans. But we do have formal confirmation that a Linux build is in the works as well.
Yeah, I have such plans. Need to make a research first, but, I think Linux support will be available before the end of this year.
This statement is outlined in the Discussions post. Provodnik Games also reached out via email explaining that plans are in the works. However, Dull Grey is written for HTML5 and then put into a standalone application with help of ElectronJS. Which explains the research aspect. However, what's impressive. The game is already doing very well on consoles (Xbox One and PS4). So I'm hoping for a solid part on Linux as well.
Dull Grey - Steam Launch Trailer
youtube
Inspired by the visual style of early 20th Century Soviet art. The story works of Russia's finest storytellers. Dull Grey lets players experience the emotional story of a mother and son. Also the concept of free will and the search for happiness in a bleak retro futuristic world. All controlled by the robotic Progress program. Players will be making the same choice again and again. Should the son become a lamplighter or a tallyman? All through an unusual binary choice mechanic that leads to an unexpected multitude of endings. There is also secret content to discover. Dull Grey is a dramatic visual novel like no other. Since the design is to experience the game through multiple playthroughs. Can players lead the son to happiness and see his story unfold in full colour? Roman Vlasov, co-founder of Provodnik Games said: "The release on consoles was an unexpected and exciting adventure. Now we feel that our game is coming to the store where it really belongs. We can't wait for Steam players to get to know Dull Grey. And we hope that the game will resonate in their hearts." Dull Grey visual novel game about growing up releases on Windows PC. Due to arrive on Linux before the end of the year. Available on Steam, priced $4.99 USD, £3.99, €3.99, 175 руб.
