what do you think of the tkachuk vs mcdavid "face of the nhl" debate?
since people magazine called tkachuk the "face of the nhl" butthurt hockey men are saying that will never be true because mcdavid is the face of the nhl. the way i see it, mcdavid might be the best player but he has the personality of beige wallpaper and tkachuk might be a rat but seems to have a fun personality
also, who do you think the nhl should market more to be the "face"? boring but the best players in the world (mcdavid, crosby, mckinnon etc) or talented fun personality guys (tkachuk, pasta, zegres etc)
I see it the same as you do.
No one can deny that McDavid is currently and will continue to be the best NHL forward - it is something every single person who gets into the world of ice hockey and consequently even the world of the NHL grasps and accepts as a fact.
However, just as you have said Connor has a personality of beige wallpaper (I love that term so much by the way). You see it every single time he is asked to do any sort of promotional content during the All-Star Week, before the season shooting, or during it. The outcome of that is always something you can hardly sell to his fans, who are die-hard supporters of the cult of "McJesus" - even those people oftentimes consider it as unwatchable - so now imagine what would people, who have no idea what NHL is, say if McDavid really was the face and his content would be the one, with which would the league be trying to expand its fanbase.
It's not that I blame him for being socially awkward, everyone has a different sort of personality and not everyone is born as a social butterfly with an undeniable charm, but the NHL and those fans who passionately defend his "face of the league" title need to realize that being the best player and the most marketable player thus the face of the league are two completely different roles and McDavid can play only the first one. Just like Crosby.
Simultaneously, you have to take into consideration that they are looking for primarily an American face of the league - that's market where they are competing with other big and more known leagues like NFL, NBA, and so on, you don't need that much promotion in Canada where it is a national sport or in Europe where you could definitely find many more fans but where you have the huge disadvantage of the time difference so you will never have thousands of Europeans watching the games at 2 AM when they have to go to work the next day. If you use a Canadian or European player as the face of the league, it won't register as big of a success as you would love to. This is the USA we are talking about, the most ridiculously patriotic country I know, they want an American face or else they won't support it.
That's why the league is pushing guys like Matthew Tkachuk or Auston Matthews (or at times even Zegras) because they are both players with actual talent but also a big marketability aspect and mainly with American passports.
Naturally, there are players who would be even bigger internet sensations if they were American - look at David Pastrnak, that man has been born a showman and a great player on top of that, he would absolutely kill the face of the league game if he wasn't from the Czech Republic and so would Mitch Marner if he wasn't Canadian, hell even Brad Marchand has an elite personality or Jaromir Jagr if he once again wasn't Czech. To this day Jagr is the most beloved player from the big guys (Gretzky, Lemieux, Ovechkin...) because he was and still is a f*cking comedian on top of being an ice hockey legend.

Out of the characters in knb who do you think is most likely to actually make it into the NBA and have a good career?
Aomine, Kagami, Kise and possibly Nebuya. I feel like whilst Midorima will remain pro, he's the first to quit to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. Akashi and Kuroko have talent but with their height? We have to be realistic and Akashi will have to take over the company someday. I don't see Murasakibara actually passionate enough to go to the NBA, and Himuro to continue his pattern of just not making the cut by an inch. The other three of the GOM? Kagami, Kise and Aomine still are tall enough to get by and all three have exceptional talent so I can see them making it. Though Kise because of his modelling career will be that one athlete who works themselves into becoming a genuine star with talk shows and trying out acting. I feel like considering Kotaro also skates, that he actually will pursue a career in skating instead of basketball. Kiyoshi's knee injury will likely prevent him from reaching the NBA heights, but also that Hanamiya's dirty playing style will someday catch up to him and kill his career. I personally do like to believe in karma, so... Whilst Mibuchi is a brilliant player, I don't see him going to the States to pursue a further career and will remain as part of the Japanese basketball elite. He just seems like one of those people who's content to live and die on the soil they were born on. Nebuya is a different case. With his physique and passion I can definitely see him having NBA potential, but unless Akashi actually helps him improve his skillset which Kiyoshi had pointed out was a bit weak, I don't see him making it very far however.

Steph Curry and the GOAT Debate.
Tumblr media
Okay I was somewhat loopy writing this essay and it really got away from me so im warning you now this essay is really long and might not be coherent when I wake up tomorrow but fuck it.
"Greatness" is a concept that is often brought up in basketball conversation. Often nebulous and rarely defined, quantifying a player's greatness (and measuring it against others) is a frequent talking point amongst basketball fans and sports media (in some cases to a nauseating degree)
It seems like every year, at some point, the talking heads of sports media like Stephen A Smith, Nick Wright, Colin Cowherd, Shannon Sharpe, and of course, Skip Bayless, eventually run out of things to talk about on their sports talk shows and podcast and default to "ol' reliable": talking ad nausem about where certain players belong in "the GOAT debate". If you go to youtube right now and search "GOAT Debate" you will find HUNDREDS of thinkpieces, video essays, rants, and arguments about who is the greatest basketball player of all time.
The conversation about one's GOAT status includes all the usual suspects. LeBron. Jordan. Kobe. Kareem. These guys are your unequivocals. If you ask anybody who they think the Greatest of All Time is, you can make a safe bet that it will be one of these four. On the fringes of those picks are guys that have a legitimate argument for GOAT status, but said legitimacy is questioned more often than not. Bird, Magic, Tim Duncan and Shaq are common names in this category.
Another bafflingly common name in this category is the subject of this essay. Steph Curry. For years, I have seen sports media talking heads and basketball twitter alike question if Steph's name should be uttered in the same breath as guys like LeBron, Jordan or Kobe. Not that people don't sing his praises. He's the greatest shooter of all time. The greatest Point Guard in NBA history (or at least in a coin flip against Magic Johnson for 1a and 1b). A first ballot hall of famer, a generational talent, the greatest player in GSW history and the beating heart of one of the greatest basketball dynasties in the last 20 years.
So despite all this (justifiable) glazing, why do these same people question Steph's place in the GOAT conversation? What more does he have to do to break into that upper echelon of "unquestionable GOAT contender?"
In my opinion? I don't think there is any. After the Paris Olympics, you'd be delusional not to put him on the same tier as other unequivocal GOAT conteders like MJ, Kobe or Bron.
In my mind, "greatness" is defined by three things. Accolades, Talent and Story. And Steph excels in all three categories.
As far as accolades go, his resume speaks for itself. Four time NBA Champ. Two time league MVP, NBA Finals MVP, Inaugural Western Conference Finals MVP, two time scoring champion, ten time all star, and after the Paris Olympics, you can add "Olympic Gold Medalist" to that list.
When it comes to talent, Steph Curry is generational. The NBA has had hundreds of great shooters in its storied history, but as far as Steph goes, I can give you about 3700 reasons why Steph Curry is unquestionably the greatest shooter in NBA history. The Golden State Warriors built a dynasty off of Steph's uncanny ability to be a threat as soon as he crosses half court. Most shooters have a preferred style of shooting, but Steph could get you a bucket any which way. Spot up. Off the dribble. In the corner. Top of the key. From 30, 40 and 50 feet from the basket, floaters down the lane. Double and triple contested. Not to mention his amazing handles and his elite off-ball movement that makes him a nightmare for other point guards to deal with.
He's also unquestionably impacted the basketball landscape. Throughout every era of NBA history, certain styles emerge and define those eras, typically influenced by the most dominant teams and players of that time. During the 60s and 70s, the league was dominated by big men like Wilt, Bill Russell and Kareem. The 80s and 90s favored the midrange game thanks to guys like Magic, Bird and Jordan. The early 2000s was an era dominated by iso play and hard defense thanks to guys like Kobe, LeBron, Shaq and Tim Duncan. The style that came to define the mid 2010s onward? A backcourt-focused style characterized by run and gun offense, spacing the floor and perimeter shooting. The primary influence for this style of basketball was unquestionably the Golden State Warriors, who built a dynasty around one of the greatest backcourts in NBA History: The Splash Brothers.
Now, what about story? Why is this important to quantifying one's greatness? What is it about Steph's story that should firmly cement him as a GOAT Contender? Every GOAT conversation has a level of subjectivity. You don't call a player great because you put their stats into a math equation to determine how many greatness points they have in comparison to other players. You call them great because of the moments attached to those statistics and accolades. Steph Curry's greatness isn't quantified by the amount of points he scored in a given game. His greatness is quantified how amazing it is to see him sink a heavily contested shot like he's in an open gym. How it feels to watch Curry close a double digit point deficit in the blink of an eye. Curry's greatness is cemented by the fact that if I say "They do have a time out, decide not to use it. Curry, way downtown..." the majority of y'all will hear the rest of Mike Breen's Double Bang Call in their head.
So, with all of this in mind, I think you'd have to be fucking delusional to question if Steph Curry belongs in the GOAT Conversation. His GOAT Status is more than cemented. Especially after winning olympic gold. From his accolades to his talent and impact to his story, his argument for GOAT Contender can more than stand up to the likes of LeBron, MJ and Kobe.
TL;DR: Steph Curry deserves to be in the GOAT Conversation and it's really weird that despite having one of the greatest careers in Basketball that people are still hesitant to call him a GOAT Contender.

I still think that CC is Roty and she Def deserves it but ppl consistently downplay AR doubles doubles. Like tbh it's impressive to me that she gets so many rebounds especially since she's only like 6'4-6'3 and she's often battling much bigger bigs. Like I really do have to give her props cuz she do be WORKING. Like I think CC is 1 and AR is 2. And it's not exactly neck to neck but I also don't think CC is like MILES ahead of her. I think she's like above AR but it's not like omg there's absolutely NO competition cuz like auntie nae said, AR Is making a statement for ROTY. I feel like ppl underestimated AR and overhyped CC yknow talking like she gonna be the best player in the league blah blah the fever r gonna win. Like I knew that fever we still gonna lose but like they would at least make it the playoffs. So I feel like that's why alot of ppl say AR shld win Roty cuz she's far exceeding expectation whereas CC is coming 'short' of the insane expectations her delusional fans out on her. And unfortunately I feel like her fans have impacted her ability to win ROTY. Like I still think she shld win and she probs will but I do see where other ppl r coming from. Other ppl who I think shld be in the conversation ( NOT WIN but conversation) is aaliyah Edwards and Jacy Sheldon and rickea Jackson cuz they r really impressing me but that's just cuz this draft class really is elite but they're lucky to not have the insane expectations that CC has.
"i feel like that's why alot of ppl say AR shld win Roty cuz she's far exceeding expectation whereas CC is coming 'short' of the insane expectations her delusional fans out on her."
100% at this part. i kinda understand why people tend to downplay her rebounds because you don't see alot of double-double talk in NBA spaces. but she's a generation rebounder and that shouldn't be downplayed
idrk about jacy she's improving but idk about being in the conversation. cam brink defo would've still been in the convo if she wasn't injured and kamilla cardoso would too (btw it was stupid that tspoon took her out of their last game cause if they had left her in she would've won)
rickea i think will get rotm one of these days. she would've been in the convo right now had curt not been weird and limited her mins at the start of the season. very very talented and has a great offensive bag i love her game
aaliyah has been performing a step down from what she was before but i think she's still great and her ceiling is still super high. i wish she played more! but their coach is worse than christie so
this draft class is super special cause any of the names i mentioned would've been roty in any other year

I saw a clip of someone asking a men's pro basketball player if he thought women's pro basketball players could play in the men's NBA. And he said no. But not purely bc of height/str etc. He was like. The ones that would be good enough. They would need to be playing with men [and access to men's sports resources] from a young age, not just making an instant transition as adults. And I thought that that was a nice acknowledgement of the reality which is like. Beyond the realities of physicality and talent, there is also the realities of access and environment and resources.
It was nice to see that guy have that nuanced take of. Yeah no shit if you gave these elite people the same opportunities all their lives they would be able to compete at a way higher level.

Victor Wembanyama: The New Era of Basketball’s Next Superstar
Victor Wembanyama is no ordinary basketball player. Standing at 7-foot-4 with the agility, skill set, and versatility of a guard, the French phenom has taken the basketball world by storm. At just 20 years old, Wembanyama is not only redefining the center position but also changing the way we think about the future of basketball. Often compared to legends like Kevin Durant and Hakeem Olajuwon, Wembanyama’s unique combination of height, athleticism, and skill makes him one of the most highly anticipated prospects in recent NBA history.
Early Life and Rise to Stardom
Victor Wembanyama was born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France, into a family of athletes. His mother, a former basketball player and coach, introduced him to the sport at a young age, while his father excelled in track and field, particularly in high jump. This athletic lineage provided Wembanyama with the physical tools and early training that would set him apart.
Wembanyama’s height was always an advantage, but it was his combination of size and guard-like skills that made him stand out. While most players of his stature were encouraged to stick to the paint, Wembanyama was developing handles, shooting from beyond the arc, and moving with the fluidity of a guard. His unique style quickly caught the attention of basketball scouts and coaches in France, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already regarded as a once-in-a-generation talent.
At just 15 years old, Wembanyama joined the Nanterre 92 basketball club, one of France’s top professional teams, and began competing against seasoned professionals. Even at this young age, he demonstrated an advanced understanding of the game and showcased flashes of the brilliance that would soon make him a global sensation.
A New Breed of Big Man
What sets Wembanyama apart from other top prospects is his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor in ways that are rarely seen from a player his size. At 7-foot-4, he is a towering presence in the paint, capable of blocking shots and altering opponents’ game plans with his rim protection. However, what makes him truly special is his ability to handle the ball, shoot from deep, and make plays like a guard.
Offense: A Nightmare Matchup
Wembanyama is a nightmare for defenders. His combination of length, shooting ability, and agility allows him to score from anywhere on the court. Whether he’s pulling up for a three-pointer, driving to the basket, or posting up smaller defenders, Wembanyama can do it all. His footwork is polished, his shooting mechanics are smooth, and his ball-handling skills are rare for a player of his size.
Wembanyama’s offensive versatility makes him almost impossible to guard. Defenders are often too slow to stay with him on the perimeter, and if they try to close out, he can drive past them with ease. In the post, his length allows him to shoot over most defenders with little resistance. It’s this all-around offensive game that has led to comparisons with Kevin Durant, one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers.
Defense: A Dominant Force
On the defensive end, Wembanyama is equally impactful. His 8-foot wingspan makes him an elite shot-blocker, and his timing and instincts are exceptional for a player his age. Wembanyama not only protects the rim but also has the lateral quickness to switch onto smaller players and guard multiple positions, a rare trait for a big man.
This defensive versatility makes him a game-changer. He can disrupt passing lanes, alter shots at the rim, and make it difficult for opponents to execute their offense. His ability to guard on the perimeter, in addition to his rim protection, gives teams a defensive weapon that is both unique and valuable in the modern NBA, where switching and versatility are key.
NBA Buzz: The Most Anticipated Prospect Since LeBron James
By the time Wembanyama was 18, the buzz surrounding him had reached a fever pitch. Scouts and analysts were calling him the best NBA prospect since LeBron James, and his games were drawing the attention of basketball fans worldwide. His standout performance in exhibition games against the NBA G League Ignite in 2022 only further solidified his status as the consensus №1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
In those games, Wembanyama put on a show, scoring 37 points in one contest and 36 points in another, while also blocking multiple shots and hitting threes with ease. His performances against other top prospects, including Scoot Henderson, left no doubt that he was ready for the next level.
The San Antonio Spurs: A Perfect Fit
In the 2023 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs won the lottery and selected Wembanyama with the №1 overall pick. For Wembanyama, it was a dream come true, as the Spurs are known for their international player development, particularly with big men. Under the guidance of legendary coach Gregg Popovich, Wembanyama is in an ideal environment to reach his full potential.
The Spurs have a history of developing international stars, with Hall of Famers like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker — the latter of whom is a fellow Frenchman and has been a mentor to Wembanyama. With the Spurs’ culture of excellence and player development, Wembanyama is in the perfect place to grow and thrive in the NBA.
The Impact on Basketball
Victor Wembanyama is more than just an exciting prospect — he represents the future of basketball. His skill set as a 7-foot-4 player who can shoot, dribble, pass, and defend multiple positions is the embodiment of the direction the game is heading. The modern NBA values versatility, positionless basketball, and big men who can stretch the floor. Wembanyama’s arrival signals a new era, where traditional positions become less relevant, and players with his combination of size and skill redefine what’s possible on the court.
He is poised to not only dominate the league but also inspire a new generation of players who will aim to emulate his unique style. Just as players like Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo have influenced the evolution of the game, Wembanyama’s impact will be felt for years to come.
Victor Wembanyama is a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and his journey from a young prodigy in France to the №1 pick in the NBA Draft is only the beginning. His ability to change the game with his skill, size, and versatility makes him one of the most exciting players to watch, and he has the potential to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
As he begins his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, the basketball world will be watching closely. Wembanyama isn’t just the future — he’s the present, and his arrival marks the beginning of a new era in basketball.
