SO! @rottenpumpkin13 answered an ask of mine, along with a few others that were similar, and despite having, like, 5 drafts of things I'm working on, ta-da!

Wearily, Cloud made his way to his mentor's apartment, swiped his keycard for access and immediately collapsed on the couch. His clothes gave off the faint smell of smoke, which was somewhat concerning to Genesis because he hadn't given his student any surprise lessons, pop quizzes or assigned homework nor training dealing with things that should lend towards a fire of some sort and thus explain the smell.

That wasn't to say that whatever called for the scent wasn't innocent — or, at least, anything worthy of arrest — but it did make the red haired commander curious. A curious Genesis was an unstoppable Genesis, as many in and out of the company could attest to. Now, Cloud wasn't one for conversation most days and didn't feel up for much of one today, either, but he knew a losing battle before it had even begun.

Mama didn't raise no fool, as the saying goes.

"Thanks for the tip," the tired blond sighed, holding up a few packs of cheap matchbooks. On closer inspection, each one was branded with a differing logo advertising a differing business — and not all of them located in Midgar.

'A collection, perhaps?' Genesis inwardly mused, assuming correctly that they were the reason behind the smoke, yet still wondering where they would factor into the backstory of why. Also, where they came from because as far as he knew, Cloud didn't collect a damn thing but training injuries. Outwardly, however...

"Oh?", Genesis raised a brow, continuing with his rapid fire mental deductions. Thoughts flew by as he went over what wisdom he had imparted to the younger man as of late, which ones would've lead to this and what plausible reason there was for his little dragon deciding to apply it.

"Mhmm," the blond begins again, moving just enough to shove the selection of little indiscriminate fire enablers back into his pocket. "If anyone asks, this--", he gestured to his body half hazardly where, accompanying the odor of smoke, faint traces of soot stood out in various places and the noticeably crumpled, burnt material on his boots, "this is from training earlier today."

Well, now. The need for an alibi? 'Whatever has he been up to?' Something of which they obviously don't need to revisit "establishing proper alibis" for once more, though perhaps a further in-depth lesson... Hmm...

Instead of mentioning any of the ideas continuing to race around within his mind, Genesis merely smiled down at Cloud innocently.

"Did you know, little dragon? I overheard that Angeal has decided to delay purchasing a new PHS once again. The man has no reason, for all he claims to be the sensible one amongst us!"

Cloud grumbled as he let his mentor gesture about in dramatic complaint of his childhood friend and examples of whatever else he was lamenting now. Instead of indulging or even calming the man, he got out his own PHS, typed up a message, put it back away and let himself fully sink into the wondrous grasp of the couch with a tired groan.

Message received. One phone on the course for annihilation.

"...but I digress, my dear!", Genesis chirped loudly, pleased as punch by the completion set in motion for the appointed mission. It always was lovely when he didn't even have to actually do any of the work for his tasks to finish nor have it able to be traced back to him in a way that could be called "legally binding". It gave him more time for further pursuits, intellectual pursuits.

Pursuits such as prodding his adorable little dragon for more details. Yes, that was far more important than giving his best friend another, long overdue, reason to finally let go of that obsolete piece of scrap, once and for all. That man was as stubborn as a behemoth when he set his mind to it. Truly, this was the smarter option; an option that was guaranteed a return on investment.

Settling on the couch by Cloud's head, Genesis began to gently run a hand through his hair in a practiced motion. For how spikey the golden locks appeared — and loathe was he to admit Angeal's Puppy had indeed chosen an appropriate nickname — his hair truly was endearingly soft. It made any action where one could touch it repeatedly an action worth doing again and again. The fact that actions such were easily filed under "touch as a love language" and often calmed his dear student when upset or anxious made it easily one of the more frequent forms of affection given between them.

"So, how has your day gone? Is your other training going well? Classes? Made any new friends, little dragon? Hmm~?"

Cloud groaned louder, a touch of the dramatics to his actions, and received light laughter in response, followed by more pets that soothed any true annoyance away. 'So much for the battle best picked...'
