some photos i took from emerson college’s encampment for palestine. most of these were taken only a few hours before the boston PD attacked hundreds of protestors and brutally arrested 118 students, most of whom were poc, jewish, and/or queer.
anyone who spent any amount of time in the encampment will tell you just how much it brought us all together—there was always food, music, arts and crafts, and hundreds of messages of support written in chalk.
after the BPD was done brutalising us for peacefully protesting, they power washed down the walls of the encampment—all of these messages are gone. theyre trying to erase what happened, but they’ll never truly be able to. everyone saw, and everyone will remember.

My home town is destroying a homeless encampment and refusing to give any of the displaced people any resources or other options
I find this incredibly inhumane, and if you do, please flood their homeless reporting site with how you feel(it allowes you to submit anonymously)
I can't describe how angry this makes me please help me do something about it

The majority of people arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) while clearing a pro-Palestinian encampment at George Washington University (GWU) were not students, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said on Thursday.
Police began clearing the encampment at GWU in the early Wednesday morning hours after nearly two weeks of protesters occupying the campus. The MPD arrested 33 individuals, 11 of which were students at the institution, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith told FOX 5 Washington D.C. on Thursday.
“As we continued to watch [the encampment] we saw an escalation in some of the activity … and when we realized we had enough intelligence, information, to move in to clear the encampment, we made that decision,” Smith said.
MPD Deputy Director of Communications Paris Lewbel confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that “11 of the arrestees identified themselves as George Washington University students.” A spokesperson for the university gave the DCNF a different figure, saying that just six of those arrested were current students. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was set to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability on Wednesday, but it was canceled after the MPD cleared the encampment.
MPD would treat future pro-Palestinian protests as it would “any other protest or demonstration” by ensuring they are “protecting those who choose to exercise their 1st Amendment right,” Smith said.
Other universities have also reported outside individuals participating in pro-Palestinian protests.

The anti-war protest encampment at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on May 1st, 2024. At the same time, some protesters were continuing to talk with school officials regarding their demands. Shortly after 10pm the school sent out a message that an initial agreement had been reached. Tents were removed on May 2nd. This is the second encampment at the university following the police clearing and arresting 9 protesters last week. Among the protesters demands are that the school “divest from all companies complicit in war crimes and human rights violations.

April 19 — Columbia University students continue their “Gaza solidarity encampment” on the main lawn of the New York City campus, defying a heavy police crackdown, with 122 arrested. The action, coordinated by various student organizations, including Columbia University Apartheid Divest, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, and Columbia Jewish Voice for Peace, has persisted for over 48 hours.
Inspired by the Columbia students’ actions, students at the University of North Carolina and Miami University in Ohio have staged their own encampments in solidarity. National Students for Justice in Palestine issued a “call to action” for students nationwide to “seize the university and force the administration to divest, for the people of Gaza.” A large crowd has also taken to the streets outside Columbia University in support of the encampment.

By Kassy Akiva
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A Jewish university student needed a police escort to enter the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s anti-Israel encampment on Friday.
Shabbos Kestenbaum, a student at Harvard Divinity School, spoke at a pro-Israel rally across the street from the encampment hosted by the Israeli American Council before deciding to cross the street and enter the encampment.
Kestenbaum walked up to the encampment and was denied entry by a keffiyeh-wearing man blocking the perimeter of the protest. Police eventually agreed to escort him into the encampment, according to video taken by The Daily Wire.
“I want to let all of you know that you’re not going to intimidate Jewish people,” he told the campers. “You can hide behind your masks as long as you want, we will not be scared.”

“All of you should be ashamed of yourselves,” he added. “This is the state of being Jewish in America, I need police to exercise my First Amendment right.”
Kestenbaum is a student at Harvard University, but spoke at the MIT counter-demonstration in support of Jewish students there.

I'm at the student intifada encampment at my university and someone came up to me like "hey do you like pokemon" so I said yeah and she sits down next to me and says "so are you familiar with the concept of the rapture"
She explained to me that the human soul and the holy spirit are like charmander and charizard and that sometimes you need to trust that immortal soul inside you because it's part of you even if you never reach a high enough "level" to truly connect with it
Then she opened a little foil packet of pokemon cards, shuffled through it for a second, and handed me a holographic murkrow card and a tulip she had tucked into her bag
I love random encounters. Hope you're having a great day artemis
