No One Reads Joseph Hergesheimer (1880-1954). But anyone else reading his Java Head today because of the story in this Granta piece by Christian Lorentzen?:
Hergesheimer’s third book, The Three Black Pennys, was the first original American novel that Knopf, whose initial specialty was bringing out translations of European works of modernism, published, in 1917. Into the 1920s, he was their bestseller, until his fortunes waned with the rest of the Exquisites. During the Depression, encomia to industrialists and contempt for the canaille were less in demand, and the style of the day turned in the direction of Hemingway. (Kazin remarks that Hergesheimer and Wylie inverted Hemingway’s aphorism, ‘Prose is architecture, not interior decoration.’) Clifton Fadiman later remarked that Hergesheimer’s novels were ‘deficient in mere brain-power’, but in 1962, when asked which American novels he cherished, Samuel Beckett said: ‘one of the best I ever read was Hergesheimer’s Java Head ’. Hergesheimer published his last book of fiction in 1934.
Also, from wikipedia: 'A 1922 poll of critics in Literary Digest voted Hergesheimer the "most important American writer" working at the time.'
[Side note about Literary Digest and their bad polling in the 1936 presidential race: "The poll's total inaccuracy completely ruined the magazine's reputation, and it ultimately ceased publication in 1938."]

Elton John, "Dirty Little Girl"
I was watching the televised Gershwin Prize (formally, The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song) presentation ceremony from Constitution Hall recently, in which Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin's songwriting were honored.
A number of luminaries performed, including last year's honoree, Joni Mitchell, along with Brandi Carlisle and, oddly enough, Metallica. Many encomia regarding Elton's music and Bernie's words were offered along with inspiring stories of how their songs propelled the performers along the path to their own creative self-realization.
Which is all well and good, but, you know, there's some stanky-ass music in the ElBer catalogue. And not good stanky-ass. I don't just mean bad songs, but songs that are straight-up offensive.
"Island Girl" is, perhaps, the most obvious example, with Elton, one of the whitest men ever to reach his rarefied levels of fame in the music industry, singing in a mock patois about a Jamaican man trying to convince a streetwalker to go back to JA.
But, turning to, perhaps, the archetypal Elton John album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, we find all sorts of unpleasantness. For example, another song about a sex worker ("Sweet Painted Lady") and a song ("All the Girls Love Alice") about a murdered teenage lesbian that treats the tragic subject respectfully, right? Well, only if one considers "It's like acting in a movie when you got the wrong part" and "And what do you expect from a sixteen year old yo-yo?" to be respectful or sensitive.
But the winner, from the same side of the GYBR LP as "Sweet…" and "Alice," has to be "Dirty Little Girl. Over a dirty Stones-ian groove, Elton sings this lovely chorus:
I'm gonna tell the world you're a dirty little girl Someone grab that bitch by the ears Rub her down, scrub her back, and turn her inside out 'Cause I bet hasn't had a bath in a year.
Surprisingly, or not at all, no-one covered this gem as part of the Gershwin Prize tribute.
There's a great single album buried in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road's two discs, once one prunes the filler ("Jamaica Jerk-Off"—yet another chance for Elton to explore his Black Jamaican side) and the clunky ("Candle in the Wind," a song that really didn't need to be written about either Marilyn Monroe or Lady Diana Spencer) tunes.
As we ask ourselves precisely wtf was wrong with Bernie Taupin, here's a palate cleanser:

Happiest of happy birthdays!!
It's a @loquaciousquark birthday!! Time to embarrass her with glowing encomia!
I am so absurdly lucky to have been your friend for, what, the past decade? Through various fandoms, multiplayer games, the magic of Movie Night, improvised musicals that almost make sense, escaping from rooms, and of course some pretty fantastic real-life adventures in Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Washington over the years (I can't believe we've hung out in six different states so far??), it's been just an endless sequence of wonderful, wonderful memories.
I'm blown away that we both wound up in professorships and I am constantly awed and inspired by you as an educator and as a scientist. Your determination to do what's right for your students again and again and again is so great to see, and your pedagogy and presentations are *chef's kiss*. If I ever decided on a wild career swing, I know who I'd want to be teaching my courses.
You're such an exceptional storyteller, and that goes for your gorgeous fic and your spectacular art as well as just our daily chats about whatever's been going on in your life. Hearing about the ins and outs of your workday have no right being so entertaining, how dare!!
And now we get to have adventures in other worlds as well! I adore Seda and Ruth and what they bring to our D&D games! Infinitely excited that you've gotten to know some of my closest friends from grad school through that as well - it's always a gamble mixing friend groups, but every time you all interact it just warms my heart. Thank you for always bringing the energy and thoughtfulness to our games - you elevate everyone's level of play and make it fun.
So excited for what the next decade will bring... and the next... and the next.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I think there's gotta be a word for when the genre's best exponent is a satire. Like panegyrics and encomia are usually pretty bad, but In Praise of Hair and In Praise of Baldness are technically and aesthetically better because they are satirical and that frees them from the confines of... uh whatever the rest of this thought is you see where this is going right? Okay then I'm done here, tldr I need a word and I don't have it.

Ante todo, la crítica no es necesariamente censura en el sentido ordinario, la crítica también encomia y aplaude, más aún, explica el encomio y enriquece el disfrute.

I'll tell you why I've always more or less apolitically liked Cornel West—or if not "always" then at least since the year before I entered graduate school, a summer spent browsing through the mammoth Cornel West Reader, one of the only serious books for sale in the downtown Barnes and Noble in Harrisburg PA in 2005. Unlike so many European and American intellectuals who discovered that philosophy was over or had never even started and then went on to find completely annoying ways of continuing to write post-philosophy, West literally stopped. Whether as a Pragmatist, a Marxist, or a Christian, he knew there was no point writing treatises, so he didn't write them anymore. I don't know if he "cares about [me]," as he claims in his presidential announcement video, but he certainly goes and talks to everybody: Tucker, Rogan, etc., I even saw him on Laura Ingraham once. And in his infectiously enthusiastic way has seemed to praise literature over philosophy: just see his encomia to Chekhov or (somewhat more ridiculously) his explanation to Anderson Cooper of "the blues line from our Irish brother." I see his decision to run for president in 2023 instead of commenting like a public intellectual as closely related to my decision to write a 500-page novel instead of producing literary criticism in 2023. And it's good, even just aesthetically, to see with both West and RFK Jr. this kind of energy returning to the left side of American politics, an earthy libertarian-communitarian spirit of Thoreau or Hurston in place of the airless neoliberalism of the Obama-Clinton wing or the wearily Scandinavia-envying socialism of the Bernie moment.

Register why don't you!
This course is about style, how we analyze it, how we cultivate it. It is about digging into sentences—clauses, phrases, words, and punctuation—to see how even the smallest units of writing can persuade. Ultimately, our goal in this course is to expand our stylistic repertoires. We’ll accomplish this goal in a number of different ways. We’ll begin with some grammar review, not to ensure "correctness" (a word whose meaning and effects we will closely examine), but rather to understand the way sentences work. Far from being the stuffy domain of reactionary pedants, grammar is historically related to practices of magic (hence the etymological relation between "grammar" and "glamor"). As is appropriate for magicians, we will learn an esoteric language—figures and tropes such as parataxis, hypotaxis, syntaxis, diacope, epistrophe, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, and many more. We’ll also look at the history of style, whose status as a key rhetorical practice dates (in the west) to Aristotle’s Rhetoric. But we’ll spend most of our time looking at your writing, trying on different styles through practices of imitation and parody. We’ll also try some practical genres (e.g., cover letters and personal statements) and some impractical ones (e.g., diatribes and encomia). In addition, we’ll learn Lanham’s paramedic method for reducing the "lard factor" in academic prose. Students should expect to write, analyze, revise, and write again.

Paul O'Grady is a reminder that the very best people are always dog lovers
Tumblr media
Paul O’Grady was clearly an inspirational figure, a trailblazer for important causes, a taboo-breaking entertainer, and an altogether decent person. He stood up against prejudice, he brought gender issues into the mainstream and, not least, projected warmth, humour and generosity. But in all the encomia following his death this week, one thing in particular touched […]

Salmo 74.

THIS NEWSLETTER COMPRISES ESSENTIAL AND INTERESTING SCIENCE UPDATES FOR INSTRUCTION AND EDIFICATION OF ALL SCIENCE LIFE, EVERY BEING THUS DRAWN FORWARD IN SCIENCE AND UNITED IN THE HEAT OF COMMON SCIENCE, ACTIVATING SELF AND OTHERS IN THE CAREFUL JOB OF SCIENCE EYES, NOTICING ALL FORMS AND SOMETIMES INHABITING THEM. -- TRUE SCIENCE VISION
READ ON:::: FOR LATEST SCIENCE AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION:
It's pretty easy to forget how much of a wild west the late 2000s and early 2010s were for indie games. The separation we have from this epoch has seen the chaff decomposed and rendered inert for the prosperity of a chosen few. What we are left with is arguably the best of the best, but only by the standards of the day and of the now.
In time, those works which dared to do the oblique and the unique resurface as internet weirdos, myself included, try to find and claim some dustcaked artefact as a harbinger of great things to come, of tremendous unseen influence. For me it's Geograph Seal, for others it might be Ultra Resort Keroncuel or Otocky, perhaps Ryan Trecartin's feature-length video I-Be Area or Ingrid de Kok's poems collected in Terrestrial Things. It might not even need to be something we think is intrinsically good. Our encomia need only point at these figureheads and say 'this did it first, this did it best, this did what we love but look how neglected it is and was and shall always be'. In reality this praise often amounts to little more than a celebration of a trivia nugget which will no doubt be unsheathed whenever it is most apt and most pedantic.
The reason I bring all this up is so I can now be that asshole and laud FJORDS for being so forward thinking in the miasma of Obama-era indie gaming.
IT IS OK!!! SCIENCE PRACTITIONER!!! ☻ IT IS OK ☻
The game-breakery of Baba Is You is clearly on display in FJORDS, although without the same player-authoritative wanton illogic seen in Arvi Teikari's work. This seemingly stiff platformer effectively pushes the player to a wall where they're forced to close out of the game or interact with its in-universe terminal. The commands available are sparse and obtuse. TRAVEL is a fast travel with two locations, the starting Pizza Place and right outside the Pizza Place. SET allows the player to toggle on and off certain aspects of the world with some options being inscrutable. SETting WATERFALLS to F is intuitive, but at no point has the player encountered a BOMB, or a GHOST, or MAGIC, or an ESCALATOR.
So maybe you change the settings of some of these just to see what will happen and proceed apace. ESCALATORs litter the landscape now. WATERFALLs have run dry. Grapple your way up and
W̶͍͊̄͋͘͝A̴̧͓̭̫͚̲̎̈̇̏̄̂R̸͚̹̦̠̻̗̋̎͛̉P̶͉̻̩̱̆̈͋ ̶̧̮̗̯̤͆̀̀͂̃̈͐ you are levitating in a miasma of desaturated blues and browns, deconstructed sprites surround your bubble, stay calm and find your place and
G̴̤̈́O̵͓͋ ̴̨̋Ā̷̻N̵̟̒Y̷̪͒W̷͖̓H̷͉̀E̶͙̓R̵̭̿E̵͈̿ ̷̥́Ẃ̷̨I̶͚͌T̴̨̑H̸̼̄ ̶͍͆S̷̥̈́C̵̺̈́I̴͕͆E̴̝͝N̶̥̈C̷͕͐E̵̛͕
What follows with this revelation is that the water hazards and ferries and blocks are mere suggestions of where the player can go. With DOORS, water is a non-truth. With MAGIC, ascension does not depend on a ceiling. With WARP, the world is ripe for exploitation and exploration.
U KNO WUT I LUV ☻
P I Z Z A ☻
And with enough faffing about you come across another pixel person and get teleported back to the start. And you do it some more. Maybe you fall into an endless hell abyss where you who are not you ceaselessly spews the letter K as a plea of self-destruction.
In time your exploration of the world suggests…
THE WORLD, BEING IN REALITY SEVERAL WORLDS, AND UNITED ONLY TENUOUSLY, THE PRACTITIONER OF SCIENCE INHABITS ALWAYS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SEVERAL, AND IS SEVERAL AND MANY.
The self has been lost in dead ends with no escape, logical ends for a journey in the quest to explore and deliver pizza. Or maybe it hasn't, maybe these aren't you, maybe they are just signifiers of progress.
U KNO WUT I LUV ☻
P I Z Z A A A A A A A A A A A ☻
This is only half the story, however, and if anything this self-made ruleset isn't even the most interesting aspect of FJORDS.
This is a SHARECART1000 game. A brief flicker of an idea with minimal documentation online, with no explicit creator, with a bizarre purpose. SHARECART titles all use the exact same savefile, meaning your progress in FJORDS affects your save for Michael Brough's POST-FUTURE VAGABOND, for Theta Games' A Colored Topology, Andy Sum's ap drive, Damian Sommer's YOUAREABOUNTYHUNTER. Your play order of these titles thus affords you a wholly different experience to everyone else. FJORDS is not limited to how it can be broken in-game, but across games. The SHARECART1000 idea is the hypothetical notion of blockchain gaming a decade before your mom asked you what a bitcoin was. It's a crossplay not for one game across platforms, but for one platform across games. And like those blockchain games from the beginning of the 2020s, a lot of those SHARECART1000 titles are effectively lost to time.
For as much as I love Michael Brough's work, I might never get to play POST-FUTURE VAGABOND. I can't even get some of the still-online titles to work with FJORDS. There is this incredible idea of an indie landscape that is non-accessible to me and will probably never be accessible again since it withered on the vine.
What else are we missing out on?
IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF TERMINAL WORLDS DISSOLUTION
IT IS THE EXPRESS RESPONSIBILITY OF ANY SCIENCE PRACTITIONER TO MAKE IMMEDIATE AND TIMELY REPAIR TO THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES
As a queer historian, my research has operated at the far periphery of a history that society sought to erase entirely. What is available is largely circumstantial, or self-referential, or operates on assumptions, or makes up a truth where one is absent. It is a pain in my heart. Of course information must inevitably be destroyed in an increasingly unstable world and universe. Nothing will survive the passage of time.
And yet, you and I and all of us should take the time to exhume those forgotten soldiers, to look at our past with reverie and curiosity.
Look for the weird, the esoteric, the obscure, the forgotten, the misconstrued, the auxiliary.
Dig deeper.
Write about it.
Share it.

Boa tardinha, mods. Vai ser um prazer ajudar!
ALÔ, TAG. BORA ACORDAR?
Ficaram curiosos? Não esqueçam de conferir a central!
