A blessing for your weekend: May there be a respite, a pause, a space between two important things. A place to say, “I am not the Christ and I need him.” May you learn something new and also, perhaps, very old that you didn’t know before today. May you rest your eyes today or rest your hands or your mind, whichever needs it most. May you know you have done what you could and can’t do what you can’t. May you praise God for watermelon and toast with peanut butter, but also for chicken on the grill and s’mores in the evening. May you remember to drink water (go and get some now). May you not feel the days slipping like sand between your fingers, but feel them like bundles of wildflowers held in your arms, sweet, colorful, and blooming, but also sometimes a little scratchy too. May you have time for a bath or a swim or a long shower or a kiddie pool with your littles. May you read a good book. (Ducks have had their day.)⠀ ⠀ It’s a sticky substance, like great wads of gum that will bond you to the street if you’re not careful, preventing you from moving forward.⠀ ⠀ It would be easy to say, “Screw the haters!” or “Ignore all criticism!”⠀ ⠀ That’s the type of rhetoric that helps you build an Instagram account with motivational photos, but it’s not great advice.⠀ ⠀ Not everyone who disagrees with you is a hater. Sometimes they are just someone with a different opinion. ⠀ ⠀ And not all criticism is toxic. Some of it is actually good for you. Some feedback is extremely healthy. How do you tell the difference between the poisons and the vitamins?⠀ ⠀ One way is to ask what it cost someone to give you that feedback.⠀ ⠀ The problem right now is that most criticism doesn’t cost the critic anything. I can leave a 1 star review anonymously on Amazon. There’s no proof I read the book. There’s a “Verified Purchase” label that proves someone bought it, but there’s no way to know if I even opened the book. It only took 42 seconds for me to leave a couple of bile filled sentences and then move on with the rest of my day. ⠀ Criticism that costs nothing is worth nothing. On the other hand, when a friend is brave enough to tell you the truth about something you might need to change, that was expensive for them to do. They risked the friendship and had to do something awkward. That costs them something. Criticism that costs nothing is worth nothing. Treat expensive feedback like it's worth gold because it is.
