Fat-tailed dunnarts (Sminthopsis crassicaudata) are mouse-sized, nocturnal carnivores, related to quolls, Tasmanian devils, and the extinct Tasmanian tiger (the Dasyuridae family). Their ‘fat tails’, up to 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) long, store energy from the insects, spiders, small frogs, and lizards they eat to help them withstand the extremes of their semi-arid habitat.

Like all marsupials, dunnarts give birth to young at a super early stage of development. They have around seven joeys per litter on average and breed twice a year.

“Almost all of their development happens after birth in the pouch, meaning we can directly observe the joeys as they develop,” explained developmental biologist Laura Cook.

Using 3D scans from micro-computed tomography (microCT), Cook and colleagues did just that and discovered the newborns’ astonishing lack of mineralized bones.

“This was somewhat of a surprise as we know that other marsupial species like kangaroos and tammar wallabies have accelerated development of the forelimb and oral bones with these bones present before or at birth,” Cook and fellow developmental biologist Andrew Pask wrote.

These are the body parts newborn marsupials use the most in their first epic journeys from the birth canal to pouch, but tammar wallabies have a gestation period of at least 25 days and kangaroos over 30.

Dunnarts are born after only 13 days in their mother’s womb, yet they’re still further developed in those important body areas compared to their other parts, such as hindlimbs.

These fierce little marsupials are born with heads almost 50 percent of their total body length. But instead of a spine to support them, the heads are propped up just with swelling of the area that will become the neck part of their spine – something also seen in Tasmanian devils. 

As for how newborn dunnarts move their tiny developing muscles without bony anchors to journey to their mother’s pouch:

“Forelimb movement is mostly controlled by the muscles of the back and shoulders,” Cook told ScienceAlert. 

“When they’re born, dasyurids have these same large muscles, but instead of attaching to bone, they attach to a transient structure made of cartilage known as the shoulder arch. The shoulder arch provides structural support and anchors the muscles used to make the journey to the pouch.”

The dunnart’s lack of bones, however, did not last long.

“Approximately 24 hours after birth, the first bones were visible in the forelimbs and jaw of the dunnart joeys,” Cook and Pask wrote.

Insights into dunnart development can help us understand our own evolutions as they provide an early mammalian comparison point, Cook explained. Marsupials separated from our line of placental mammals at least 160 million years ago.

These findings could also help biologists explore the molecular processes behind skeletal development, something that is much trickier to observe in animals that undergo this development within a womb.

“I’ve been using the information from this developmental study to look at the regions in the dunnart genome that are driving developmental differences in early craniofacial structures between marsupials and placental mammals,” said Cook.

“This analysis gives us a deeper understanding of marsupial development and makes the dunnart a much more powerful laboratory model. We can now start to use this tractable model as we develop novel conservation tools for closely related vulnerable marsupials, such as the Tasmanian devil and the Northern quoll.”

There are 19 species of dunnart in Australia, some are threatened, and many are facing population declines due to increasing fires, agricultural clearing, pesticides impacting their food sources, predation by feral predators like cats, and destruction of their habitat by feral herbivores like cattle and camels.

Like a lot of Australia’s strange and unique animals, dunnarts are found nowhere else in the world.

“Sadly, a third of Australia’s marsupials are currently facing extinction,” said Cook. “We still have so much to learn about marsupial biology, and understanding their life history is an important step in enhancing conservation strategies.”

birthday reflections

For me, birthdays have always been a time of year for two things: 1. To reflect back on the past 12 months and what we’re most grateful for, and 2. An opportunity to spend time with loved ones and celebrate the relationships in our lives.

Since we’re in lockdown, only half of the above is possible today. So here it goes.

The first half of my 32nd year saw me the happiest I’ve been in my adult life. After moving to Melbourne in 2016 and starting over from scratch, years of hard work finally paid off and I felt as though all the pieces of my life were in place. My career, relationships, home and finances were all where I wanted them to be. For the first time in my life, I had a strong sense of purpose and confidence in myself, and the part I play in this world. On top of that, I had two amazing holidays: first to Bali on one of the most relaxing, indulgent and rejuvenating trips I’ve ever been on, then home to Canada for the first time in two years to spend Christmas with family and childhood friends. I entered 2020 feeling balanced and optimistic for the year ahead, oozing with gratitude for the life I was living.

Then in a flash, life as we knew it was thrown upside down when COVID-19 hit.

It’s now been a blurry five months of constantly living and working from home, while trying to adjust to this restrictive way of existing. After successfully flattening the curve during Melbourne's first lockdown, we were given a brief taste of freedom before going back into a second, harsher lockdown last month. We are again bound to our homes and cut off from our friends and loved ones until September, at least.

My husband often tries to put a positive spin on all of this, saying “at least we’re not living through a world war!” - and I agree, the sacrifice of staying home seems pale in comparison to what other generations had to endure.

But I believe what makes ongoing lockdown so difficult - so emotionally taxing - is that we are deprived of the human connections which make us uniquely “human”. The moments and memories we create together give us purpose and feed our souls. Take this away from us, throw in a curfew, mandatory face masks and add in the stress of a global pandemic, it’s no wonder people are struggling.

As an extrovert, I know these in-person connections are what fuel me. They energize me so I can thrive and be my best productive self, enabling me to go back out into the world and pass on energy and light to others. I’m not sure I have a lot of tangible skills to brag about, but I’ve always considered myself a “people person” and truly believe this has not only helped me grow my career into a leadership role, it has also led me to curate a really fulfilling life with deep and meaningful relationships.

So...what does an extroverted, people-person do in lockdown? How do I accept the fact that it’s impossible to know when I’ll be able to see my family and friends across the globe? How do I energize myself without the social connections that I was sure to keep up on weekends to refuel myself for the work week ahead? How do I reignite my passion for life when so much of what brought me joy is out of reach?

Lockdown has been hard on everyone for different reasons, devastating people’s livelihoods, incomes, and even personal safety. Mental health is at an all time low, and as I sit here with my privilege of never having experienced debilitation due to my mental state, the past month since going back into lockdown has challenged me like never before. I’m grappling with constant mood swings, a victim of the “coronacoaster” of emotions that so many of us are trapped on. Some days, I feel great and productive and energized; others, I feel so far from my “normal” self - or, at least what I had grown to recognize as “normal”. My glass has become more empty than full, while uninvited negative thoughts creep their way into my typically cheerful mind. 

I am still learning to be OK with not being OK, while also still mourning the loss of my life that once was. At least a silver lining of all this is that these circumstances have forced us to really talk about our mental health, normalizing anxiety and depression and ultimately providing space for others to feel less alone in their struggles. The conversations I’ve been having with close friends have been more open and honest than ever, as we find solidarity in experiencing the same challenging emotions which this wild year has forced to the surface.

I am confident we can come out of this stronger and more grounded than before. But for now, let’s keep the conversations going. I’ll keep seeking other ways to energize myself, like this very act of sharing my writing. Thanks for reading these birthday reflections - rest assured we’ll be celebrating twice as hard when we’re able to be together again.

The book, entitled Achieving the Paris Climate Agreement, was the culmination of a two-year scientific collaboration with 17 leading scientists at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), two institutes at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the University of Melbourne’s Climate & Energy College.

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5) released October 2018, the Earth must be kept below the dangerous threshold of 1.5°C in global average temperature rise above pre-industrial levels if we are to avoid a worsening of climate-related impacts.

Up until now, it was assumed to be difficult if not impossible to achieve the carbon budget required to stay below 1.5˚C -- equivalent to approximately 320 billion tonnes (Gt) of net carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) above early 2018 levels*.  Humans today release approximately 40 GtCO2 per year, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas.
