Something from my day... an RS-25 engine hot fire test @nasastennis Space Center in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. I don’t typically post photos from my work life on my feed, but every once in awhile I experience something so mind-bending that I just have to share. What you are seeing here is a legacy engine from the @NASA space shuttle, undergoing a qualifying test for a future flight on the Space Launch System rocket which will power the Orion spacecraft on a mission to the dark side of the Moon. There will be 4 of these engines powering that rocket — unbelievable power! What this pic doesn’t show is the reverberation of the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen caused as it pours out from the test stand, the audible tree-filled Deep South landscape, the intense heat and sweat and the weary effect it produces, and the amazing roar—so loud to hear that even mandatory earplugs barely muffle the sound.
