Root Century As England Take Slender First Innings Lead
2nd Test - India vs England - Day 3 (Lords)
Joe Root stood out on yet another occasion as he single handedly held England's innings together with a stubborn knock of 180 not out in 533 minutes as India's first innings total of 364 was surpassed on the third day of the second cricket Test at Lord's on Saturday.
Tumblr media
Resuming from an overnight 119 for 3 Root and his overnight batting partner Jonny Bairstow (57) initially took a firm grip on the innings to prevent it from crumbling with a stand of 121 for the fourth wicket at which stage India got their much needed breakthrough.
With nine deliveries left before India could take the second new ball, paceman Mohamed Siraj showed that he could strike when it mattered, as he had Bairstow caught in the slip cordon at a time his senior fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami were kept at bay.
Bairstow's dismissal was followed by Sharma moving into the act to account for the next three England wickets claiming Jos Buttler for 23, Moeen Ali for 27 and Sam Curran for a first-ball duck that put him on course for a hat-trick that was not to be.
But Siraj struck again to remove Ollie Robinson for 6 followed by the combination of Jadeja and Pant having Mark Wood back in the pavilion unable to make his ground, run out for 5.
Running out of partners Root with 18 fours to his name saw last man in James Anderson bowled by Shami without scoring as England were all out for 391 taking a 27-run first innings lead that India will have to wipe out on Sunday.
While India's main strike bowler Bumrah went wicketless, Siraj walked back with four scalps under his belt as the best bowler in the innings surpassing Sharma who had three wickets.
Scores: India first innings 364 (KL Rahul 129, Rohit Sharma 83, James Anderson 5 for 62) England first innings 391 (Joe Root 180 not out, Jonny Bairstow 57, Mohammed Siraj 4 for 94, Ishant Sharma 3 for 69)

Jhulan Goswami is set to play her last series ever. She has a legacy that should be celebrated ever so heartily. The series starts tomorrow at 3:30pm IST. Go watch it everyone, it’s the least she deserves. Spread the word.
Meanwhile, here’s an interview that tells us much about her story, and gives an insight into how the Indian society sees women’s sports as well. The impact of her presence and excellence in the sport of cricket for so long is seen in women’s cricket gaining popularity in India and across the globe.
“My grandmother has always supported me since the beginning, when no one else was. She has seen the British rule. There was no freedom back then. After partition a lot of things happened. She always wanted to be free and express things.”

Rain Marrs England's Fight Back - Kholi Out 'Golden Duck'
1st Test - England vs India - Day 2 (Nottingham)
Rain had a big say on day two of the first cricket Test between India and England as only 33.4 overs were possible from the day's quota of 90 at Nottingham, while the tourists reached 125 for 4 from an overnight 21 for no loss.
Tumblr media
For India it can be said it was certainly a bad day as they slumped from what looked like a well secured 97 for no loss with openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul negotiating England's pace trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson until the 38th over when they parted company.
Robinson had the breakthrough when he had Sharma hook a ball into the hands of Sam Curran at fine-leg with his score on 36 made in 107 deliveries with six fours, five minutes short of three hours of occupying the crease.
But the worst was to come for India when the veteran Anderson had Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli dismissed in successive balls to leave them struggling at 104 for 3 and if that was not enough came the run-run of Ajinkya Rahane (7) who could not beat a direct hit from Jonny Bairstow as he retreated to the bowler's end.
For England it was one of those rare occasions to see Kohli out in the first ball he faced that he edged to the wicket keeper Jos Buttler who also held a catch in the previous ball to get rid of Pujara for 4.
With England pressing for more wickets under overcast cloudy skies came bad light that halted play and held up the final session, as well until the proceedings were called off for the day with Rahul unbeaten on 57 with nine fours while facing 151 deliveries.
On the previous day India's pace duo of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah triggered a dramatic England middle order collapse from a safe 138 for 3 to 183 all out on the first day as the two teams commenced a five-match Test series.
Scores
England first innings 183 (Joe Root 64, Jonny Bairstow 29, Sam Curran 27 not out, Jasprit Bumrah 4 for 46, Mohammed Shami 3 for 28) India first innings 125 for 4 (Rohit Sharma 36, KL Rahul 57 not out, James Anderson 2 for 15)

Jimmy Anderson goes past Glenn McGrath to become the most successful pacer in test cricket history. Alastair Cook, earlier, went past Kumar Sangakkara’s tally to become test cricket’s leading run scorer among all the left-handed batsmen.
England beats India by 4-1 in the test series.
